Yes agreed the sheer strength of screws is not what people they are, for example for joist hangers that's why you use specific nails because of there sheer strength, but what do I know
Sir! I think you did a very AWESOME Job! I been trying to get a patio cover now for over 20 years! One day I’ll be blessed!! My dream will be come a reality! Your hands are blessed!
Love that you had your son involved and showed how to do things safely! This is creating amazing memories. My husband got to do the same thing with his grandpa as a kid. When we were dating and we visited his grandparents' house, he pointed out the gazebo in the backyard and excitedly told me he helped his grandpa build it. Your son is going to do that one day!
I love the way you keep the project moving forward with little adjustments here and there. That’s how I do it and your end result looks fantastic. I used to bog down in overthinking every little detail and realized you get to enjoy your work sooner by keeping the process going like you do. Great work brother!
Two thumbs up. I was trying to come up with something for my deck and you’ve given me a lot of ideas. Now, if only ONDURA would sponsor my deck enclosure build...
You did a beautiful job on the Pergola/queen room ..your wife is so very blessed that you know how to do these jobs ..you’re saving so much money.. keep up the good work🥰🥰
Man Tyler I remember helping my father build a screened in porch when I was about your son's age in the 90s. God bless you great that you got him out there with you.
This is a wonderful build I bet your wife loves it . When I was young my Dad was building beams for our ceiling he cut a board and the end dropped off and landed on our chuwawas paw and broke it. It was so sad she screamed and cried for an hour the vet took care of it but I never forgot that. I can see how you love your pets so please be careful. I also think it’s great how you get your son involved you can be proud.
Nothing wrong calling this a joist. Ceiling joist is usually flat, whereas rafters are the angled part of a truss. Most of us watching the video knew what he was talking about.
I wish you would go back and explain how you closed off that gap between your house roof and the part of the patio roof that was built just over the house roof..I watched it several times but I still got lost..beautiful work!
I love how much time, knowledge and patience when you build everything vs. the shoddy work whoever built the original deck and pergola - just shows that quality > quickly done work. :)
Yes! My husband and I are going to roof part of our deck. He wants to do exactly this... not attach to the house. Yay! Going to show him this! And tell your wife I feel her! I'm almost 70 and he still has me climbing ladders, screwing deck boards and holding beams!
I have been trying to come up with an idea for my porch! Bingo !!!!! What a fantastic job you and your family should be proud of the outcome. It is truly awesome !!!!!
Very very well thought out and absolutely beautiful. I have never had a screened in porch envy but I do now LOLOL God's blessings to you and your family.
I’ve been wanting to make this since I bought my house, but I couldn’t wrap my head around how to attach it to the roof. Your method is so simple and makes a ton of sense. How does it do in rain? It looks like the rain might sprinkle a bit under the pergola.
It looks great. My wife wants a screen room. A lot of work. I am just wondering when it is time to put a new roof, it looks like it would be a little difficult. You have several great helpers too.
I am a construction engineer. I would not of built it that way, but it has survived 80 mile/hr winds, so I guess you are the expert here. Great job and I can see why your wife married you--you are the man.
I'm not an engineer, just another diy'er and would not build it this way... The entire roof depends on two 2x6 rafters and the screws holding them to the posts. A better way would be to run 2 2x6 boards over the posts to create a beam. Then, run the rafters over top of the beams. That would spread the load over more of the structure and not depend solely on the screws that connect two of the rafters to the posts. Like you said it survived 80 mph winds. I'm not sure how often it can handle that though. Also, snow load with winds? Again, I'm just a diy'er. The general idea is good but, the implementation would not work where I live.
This is amazing !!! First time viewer and love this so much ! Now I just need to find a DIY Tyler to come to Kansas and build this for me, a Kansas Grandma ! Lol !!
Quick tip. To keep Great Stuff from adhering to the vinyl, you have two options. One is wide painters tape, the other is to spray it with WD-40 before filling the cracks.
great, big stuff can be nasty to clean up. I was looking for another way to close gap against house, but I think the right way would be to cut out siding which I don't want to do.
Just a note, if you screw a small piece that will overlap on the top of the roof double header frame joists that overlaps the side frame joists, makes it easier to hold and align them without a clamp. Nice build!!
We have a back porch we close in with Sun Tuff clear panels for winter. In spring we take them off. I bought 7 screens you use for patio doors. The ones that close with magnetic strips. And are attached with Velcro to the wood. We have 2 screen doors on each end and leave clear panels up because they stop the rain from blowing in. One has a cat door to let our pets in all year.
far out - what an artist - i loved this video :) incredible skills - looks beautiful. we have a pergola but the tropical plants cant stand our cold winter :) blessings from new zealand
I'm in CT and through home Depot I bought armadillo decking and love it. I didn't like tricks or any of the other composite decking. My color is called campfire. Nice job on the porch
I'm not a fan of the beams not being notched into the posts. All of the roof load relies on those headlock screws and NOT the posts. That's also quite a span for 2x6.
@@TimGallant He didn't even use screws designed for the joist hangers, just decking ones. Hopefully it doesn't crush him or his family in a couple years.
Thank you for this beautiful porch. I have immensely enjoyed our evenings together without mosquitoes, and morning coffee in the quiet hours, and afternoon breaks watching the kids play on the world's greatest swing set.... I love it🥰
I built my deck 20 years ago (not attached to the house - no permit required). 5 years ago I built a sunroom on that deck. I asked about getting a permit and the inspector (who was really helpful for past projects) came out to look at it and said he didn't know how to classify it and signed off on the permit anyway (so a permit was probably not required).
I appreciate your attention to detail and how you made sure that everything was precise. Nice work! My only question is why not go with a straight shed roof as opposed to the standalone roof? 🤷♂️ Thank you for sharing. 😎
I live in Central New York State. The no-see-ums are crazy bad this year because of so much rain this summer. I have to close all my windows because they come through the screens!
You know what would look really awesome is some led lighting inside your knee wall and inside your soffit .. you can get a roll cheap you can even make it a light show to music with certain ones .. just an idea lol
That's a great screen patio. Did you tell the wife that spray foam would come off the siding 🤔 because it wodon't. What keeps the mosquitoes from coming in the space between the two roofs.?? (There's no attached dormer there). Also that Onduline company used to be in New England back in the 80's and they went through bankruptcy and changed their name around a bit. The roofing is great as long as you don't have snow or hard freeze. So it would work great down south. I thought it was pretty good stuff but there are a lot up north that dont.
Great idea! My wife and I have had a number of "contractors" out to give an estimate to build a screened in room on our deck, but none have followed up with us. We never thought of not attaching it to the house. This solves our problem. One questions, what is the drive you use for the soffit over the roof and gutters? Looks like a small palm driver?

What material did you use for the interior wall?
@@jeromelindsay3144 qqqqqqqqqqqqqqq

you might want to put tape on the siding first,

you sound like an airline pilot. And include every single possible detail of your products and techniques. WOW!
The fact that your wife and son helped must make that build more satisfying and enjoyable

The mosquito barrier was a brilliant idea and looks super nice.
You are outstanding Mr. That is all I can say. And the lady helping is just terrific. Loved your screen in porch.
I really liked how you used corrugation around the railing. Very nice accent touch
...also made great finished soffits ..
I’ve got 20 minutes later to watch this masterful build. Skimmed it and subbed! 💪
Floor = Joist, Roof = Rafter
Looking very nice great job
Also you can get ceiling joists
Ah....I rafter sounds right. Was thinking truss but that is a prefabbed piece. Rafter...I like it! Thanks!
Nothing wrong calling this a joist. Ceiling joist is usually flat, whereas rafters are the angled part of a truss. Most of us watching the video knew what he was talking about.

Louanna you are looking fine
He lucky to have a helper wife! I’m amazed that she did all that in a skirt and flip-flops.
He’s lucky enough to have a wife who is a carpenter in a skirt and flip flops to do half of the work!!
I think a working wife that can drill, climb ladders, hold 2x4s,2x6s and more without fussing is a blessing to her husband.
