Stop "Pushing Your Punches" -- Drive vs Whip

- A common problem that fighters have is they push their punches, and lose that "pop" or "snap" motion. What I've noticed as a striking coach, is how students understand different vocabulary -- this video is intended to explain the biomechanics of striking. If this confuses more than it does answer questions, then completely disregard it and keep training! Let me know in the comments below.

Sir your car is 4 years old. How old are you? And why are you naked?
Shane you should have a weekly show where viewers submit vids of them hitting the bag or mitts and you critique them...p.s I’m down to send in my scrub level vids lmao
That sounds like a great idea i'd do it too
Id be interested as well. I have some recordings of my bag sessions that I would like critiqued. I'd send mine in if this becomes a thing.

False statement
You obviously aren't a Punching Bag. I perceive bias in your anthropomorphic perspective. Have respect for inanimate objects. They don't have a voice to make an articulate defense against their abuse. A punching bag is fated to a life misery. Have mercy on your creations. Frankenstein wasn't the Monster he created. Frankenstein was the monster he created. The Villigers who meant to destroy the monster were more monstrous than Promethios who gave humans the knowledge of Fire. Knowledge is dangerous. Play safe!
I've always felt my punches lacked that sense of timing thanks a lot Shane! Very helpful

Ego is my greatest flaw when it comes to executing proper technique. The moment I put my ego aside and just flow, my true potential starts to show through. Whether it's the bag or a sparring partner, boxing keeps me mentally grounded.
Frick, I feel like this helps me so much lol. Great comment
Damn Shane, that kick at 2:23 was way too fast

I wish I could do thatc

I have this problem and I didn't even realize. Shane, I honestly learn as much if not more from your videos than my kickboxing coach. Thank you.
Your channel really helps me learn of all these little things I wouldn't have learned on just practice. The subtle but important bits that usually get overlooked even my professional instructors.

Would love to see an even greater breakdown of this
That question mark kick was wicked.
The difference between whip and push is the follow-through. It’s easy to practice this by listening to the sound the bag makes when you strike it. A push will make a thud, and a whip punch or any whip movement will make a smack. And to visualize the “whip” is like visualizing your body moves like a wave. Like in dubstep dancing they build their “wave” (for fighting it would be “power”) from their feet and you can see how their body moves like water. A great place to learn how to develop the fundamentals of ALL fighting is from this teacher DK Yoo. He has a lot of videos that explain this wave movement, it’s hard to understand and even learn, but once you try it yourself you feel it. a man once said “feel it! Don’t think” -Bruce Lee
I know this is an old video, but this was exactly what I needed today. I got my first boxing match tonight, and every bit of info I can soak in will make a difference!
How was it?
Thank you for clarifying and demonstrating the differences between these two concepts. STILL my favorite channel.
Shane, you consistently improve the way you convey your knowledge. I've enjoyed learning from you over the past few years.
I've definitely been pushing my punches... thanks Shane!
it's important to have a strong core rotation to transmitt the force generated by the legs.
your videos are already of amazing quality, this just took it up another level. amazing job shane
Dude, you rock. I've been trying to understand this for so long, it took you a minute to explain it...
2:22 what the hell that was fast
Nice snappy question-mark kick man!
I love this video.
No bs no lengthy word salad about the how's and why's just right into showing, what to do.
Bro that ? Kick there at the end was sick af. From now on that's how imma greet people's faces
Do a question mark kick breakdown/video. You have a great technique
never practiced boxing, but i learned this concept in Tae Kwon Do, with the side kick, with side kicks you're forced to whip, then it was easy applyng the same concept and explosivehip rotation to punches.
Yeah I would imagine. Now, I'm no expert, but I always though Tae Kwon Do to be way too high risk/high reward (with a higher risk to reward ratio to my eye), and while you must fear the powerful legs of a TKD disciple, if you can close the gap and grapple, they are crippled, or does it teach hand to hand well enough? I can certainly see how the training would prepare you and help give you proper form and movement though.
@@jkay2853 i see no way those shit martial arts help you in a fight when your opponent wants to kill you straight away

Started boxing 4 months ago and just TODAY realized I was doing this - driving. Great tips, got a lot to work on!
Thank you! This is a clear explanation of a common mistake beginners usually do. I like the sentence at the end: you don't have to look pretty, you have to be effective.
Many people say
Punch must go through the target

Shane your videos are amazing, I always learn something new when I come here. Congratulations.
Your vids are great. Technique is everything. Love hearing the nuts and bolts of stuff.
Can you do a breakdown on that question mark kick? Seems like a useful switchup to mix in with the push kick.
It's all in the whip on your anchored foot. You're creating inertia rotating your body which also powers the kick, rather then strength in the kick itself.
Matthew House a regular taekwondo roundhouse kick to the head
True...at the end, who cares about the wheeping or driving when you can knock your opponent out 👍
Brilliant vid you see a lot of beginners pushing punches this breaks it down so simply
It's amazing how in every video , you teach me a lot
i was always taught not to just smack em with my fist amd retract, but to try and punch through the opponent
in tae kwon do i was taught to AIM beyond the opponent, but never to push.
@@arx3516 back 4 years later this makes the most sense, i now mainly use snap punches and only use push punches in certian situations but i agree with what you said you can aim at a target behind and still snap
I listen to street fighter/self defence subliminals instead of learning myself.
A&C Nation subliminals in that case are waste of time, they don’t work that way. You can’t enhance your skills without practicing
Ya gotta spar man. It's how you develop reaction timing
lol sometimes i do that..but sometimes i get my ass up and get active and work on my punch and kick skills and defending skills as well
Robert Baratheon subliminals can increase reaction time too.
A&C Nation do it work doe?
No comments just a load of thumbs up. You know you made a great video when that happens!
Beautiful question mark kick. Super flexible.💪🏻💪🏻 your vids are super motivating since I started training Muay Thai about 6 months ago. I love it, one of the best decisions I ever made.
A lot of power punchers who are pros don't whip like that. Look at GGG power punching the striking pad or the dummy when they were measuring the force of his punches. He is letting his weight follow through into the target for sure. Not pushing but punching through. You can drive a punch and still hit with a sharp impact. Think of a Thai round house, it's more damaging than a snapping style roundhouse but it's follows through the target, or even a hockey slap shot, they follow right through for maximum power. Hitting is hitting why would just punching be unique and the only scenario where follow through creates less force?
oboroshogun good points
i see ur point but u would lose ur defence and balance if u put ur weight in it an ur speed
He definitely didn't snap the punch back when he hit the pineapple at full force. There is a time for both types of punches. But there is no way snapping your punch has more power than letting your weight sit into them with a bit of follow through. Doesn't mean you hit it with your arm bent. You would hit it at virtually the same extension but you drive though and let your body weight carry forward. Still pull your arm back into position but not don't cut the punch short.
That’s just natural athleticism. Many of them do. Like mike mf tyson
Pushing your punch is different than follow through. GGG does not push his punches like that.
This randomly showed up on my RUclips recommendations. I've never been in a fight in my life. I'm about to beat my boss's ass though.
thanks, very good lesson.

Not if you're Conor McGregor :) :)
HAHAHHH dudeeee
2:22 holy shit thats such a unexpected sucker kick. Need to learn that
Prince Naseem did it all the time. He didn't just push, he sprinted into his punches, which is why his power was deadly. What you did at 0:40 is all theory and semantics. In a real fight, many punches will land before they were intended, and therefore look like pushes. Although they don't manifest the same power as they would if they made contact later, these punches still have the power to drop opponents.
I love watching these videos as it helps my technique greatly...even if it's just fitness boxing :)

Notification squad were you at?
how to fight someone who is smaller and faster than you?
Smart Hawk grab them by their head and dash them across the room
zakk 😂😂
Sorry fore bad english but, keep them on a distance with jabs and try to not let hem close and use alot of movement to go sideways if he coms at you with alot of speed the power of your punch wil be harder on his body. What my sensei always tels me is to dance around him a bit to keep him in check.
Use your feet
im 5-5. we dont have any other short guys here so this is what you should look for: getting in is dangerous for me but a have to take that risk if i am to prevail. tall long people must control my distance to neutralize my weapons. pump that jab or push kicks cause if i get in your done. tall guys also have difficulty punching down so i cut angles and change levels with faints. this is where tall man knees are scarry but again, if i stay close like paint, those knees dont pump out with force. this is where ima liver hunter. Tall man control that distance and im in trouble
some advanced stuff. Your technique is killer!!!
Very educational video, thumbs up!
So... Aim for the shins and nads. Oh! And always wear steel cap boots.
Oh yeah man, my kicks with boots devastating, no boots , ehhh better use my shins

I really enjoy your content. Thanks for making great videos. Would you consider making another video about which punches and kicks would be best for a beginner to use training on a heavy bag?
This is a great topic, alot of people dont know or teach the different types of force
Same can be said with knees, elbows, and kicks right?
KEVIN MCGREGOR Straight knees should be driven towards the spine, and rotating knees in the clinh should be "whipped" using your hips.
Elbows from side draw force from whipping the hips and straight or upward elbows are driven into the opponent.
Or maybe im full of shit, thats just the way i see it. hope Shane will give you a definitive answer. I have a couple of amateur Muay thai fights on me and one with pro rules, but i think im not at coaching level so dont take my word for granted.
BlackKorv
Fair enough. I'd say your answer is valid since you've actually competed and not just some keyboard expert.
KEVIN MCGREGOR no
Why is this guy, who never had a professional match, talking about how to punch? 😂😂
weareone Why is this guy talking shit when he doesn’t know anything about Shane? 😂😂
Omg, thank you so much. This entire time I never knew what I was doing wrong.
I really needed this thanks shane
I think it all depends on what body parts you are hitting.
For concussive effect when hitting the head, you may wanna snap, 1. to protect your hand from breaking, 2. a snap with 1-2 inch of displacement (moving the jaw or head) is often enough to rattle the brains., 3. head is a much faster moving target, so you probably don't want to leave yourself open.
For a body/breaking punch, you want to penetrate deeper into the liver or break the ribs, you need to push through the protective muscles to get that displacement. kinda like how shooting a bullet into ballistic gel. That's not to say it's a slower punch then, just as fast as the snap, but more follow through, so your acceleration curve may start later than a snap.
Your videos are helpful and informative.
Paralysis through analysis is genius!
