Stop "Pushing Your Punches" -- Drive vs Whip

  • A common problem that fighters have is they push their punches, and lose that "pop" or "snap" motion. What I've noticed as a striking coach, is how students understand different vocabulary -- this video is intended to explain the biomechanics of striking. If this confuses more than it does answer questions, then completely disregard it and keep training! Let me know in the comments below.

      You obviously aren't a Punching Bag. I perceive bias in your anthropomorphic perspective. Have respect for inanimate objects. They don't have a voice to make an articulate defense against their abuse. A punching bag is fated to a life misery. Have mercy on your creations. Frankenstein wasn't the Monster he created. Frankenstein was the monster he created. The Villigers who meant to destroy the monster were more monstrous than Promethios who gave humans the knowledge of Fire. Knowledge is dangerous. Play safe!

    @alirios2241 5 лет назад +21

    The difference between whip and push is the follow-through. It’s easy to practice this by listening to the sound the bag makes when you strike it. A push will make a thud, and a whip punch or any whip movement will make a smack. And to visualize the “whip” is like visualizing your body moves like a wave. Like in dubstep dancing they build their “wave” (for fighting it would be “power”) from their feet and you can see how their body moves like water. A great place to learn how to develop the fundamentals of ALL fighting is from this teacher DK Yoo. He has a lot of videos that explain this wave movement, it’s hard to understand and even learn, but once you try it yourself you feel it. a man once said “feel it! Don’t think” -Bruce Lee

    never practiced boxing, but i learned this concept in Tae Kwon Do, with the side kick, with side kicks you're forced to whip, then it was easy applyng the same concept and explosivehip rotation to punches.

    • @jkay2853
      @jkay2853 4 года назад +1

      Yeah I would imagine. Now, I'm no expert, but I always though Tae Kwon Do to be way too high risk/high reward (with a higher risk to reward ratio to my eye), and while you must fear the powerful legs of a TKD disciple, if you can close the gap and grapple, they are crippled, or does it teach hand to hand well enough? I can certainly see how the training would prepare you and help give you proper form and movement though.

  • @oboroshogun
    @oboroshogun 6 лет назад +56

    A lot of power punchers who are pros don't whip like that. Look at GGG power punching the striking pad or the dummy when they were measuring the force of his punches. He is letting his weight follow through into the target for sure. Not pushing but punching through. You can drive a punch and still hit with a sharp impact. Think of a Thai round house, it's more damaging than a snapping style roundhouse but it's follows through the target, or even a hockey slap shot, they follow right through for maximum power. Hitting is hitting why would just punching be unique and the only scenario where follow through creates less force?

      @oboroshogun 6 лет назад +6

      He definitely didn't snap the punch back when he hit the pineapple at full force. There is a time for both types of punches. But there is no way snapping your punch has more power than letting your weight sit into them with a bit of follow through. Doesn't mean you hit it with your arm bent. You would hit it at virtually the same extension but you drive though and let your body weight carry forward. Still pull your arm back into position but not don't cut the punch short.

    Prince Naseem did it all the time. He didn't just push, he sprinted into his punches, which is why his power was deadly. What you did at 0:40 is all theory and semantics. In a real fight, many punches will land before they were intended, and therefore look like pushes. Although they don't manifest the same power as they would if they made contact later, these punches still have the power to drop opponents.

      Sorry fore bad english but, keep them on a distance with jabs and try to not let hem close and use alot of movement to go sideways if he coms at you with alot of speed the power of your punch wil be harder on his body. What my sensei always tels me is to dance around him a bit to keep him in check.

      im 5-5. we dont have any other short guys here so this is what you should look for: getting in is dangerous for me but a have to take that risk if i am to prevail. tall long people must control my distance to neutralize my weapons. pump that jab or push kicks cause if i get in your done. tall guys also have difficulty punching down so i cut angles and change levels with faints. this is where tall man knees are scarry but again, if i stay close like paint, those knees dont pump out with force. this is where ima liver hunter. Tall man control that distance and im in trouble

    I really enjoy your content. Thanks for making great videos. Would you consider making another video about which punches and kicks would be best for a beginner to use training on a heavy bag?

    Same can be said with knees, elbows, and kicks right?

    • @BlackKorv
      @BlackKorv 6 лет назад +3

      KEVIN MCGREGOR Straight knees should be driven towards the spine, and rotating knees in the clinh should be "whipped" using your hips.
      Elbows from side draw force from whipping the hips and straight or upward elbows are driven into the opponent.
      Or maybe im full of shit, thats just the way i see it. hope Shane will give you a definitive answer. I have a couple of amateur Muay thai fights on me and one with pro rules, but i think im not at coaching level so dont take my word for granted.

      Fair enough. I'd say your answer is valid since you've actually competed and not just some keyboard expert.

    I think it all depends on what body parts you are hitting.
    For concussive effect when hitting the head, you may wanna snap, 1. to protect your hand from breaking, 2. a snap with 1-2 inch of displacement (moving the jaw or head) is often enough to rattle the brains., 3. head is a much faster moving target, so you probably don't want to leave yourself open.
    For a body/breaking punch, you want to penetrate deeper into the liver or break the ribs, you need to push through the protective muscles to get that displacement. kinda like how shooting a bullet into ballistic gel. That's not to say it's a slower punch then, just as fast as the snap, but more follow through, so your acceleration curve may start later than a snap.
