    Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Reviews, the series where we take a sensible secondhand car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time we have my uncle's 2017 Skoda Rapid Spaceback 1.2 TSI S, which, as a base model, could be the most sensible car ever made. Be prepared for lot of hard plastic, obvious signs of cost cutting, the good old Volkswagen Group coolant reservoir, surprisingly nice driving characteristics, lots of headroom and really not much of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then!

    Enjoyed the review as usual, a refreshing change from the run of the mill new car reviews.

      Thank you ever so much indeed! Glad you enjoyed it. This car is pretty much the epitome of the Sensible Secondhand Reviews series. I think that we have about thirty videos on the playlist now.

    I must say that I do like this Škoda Rapid.
    VAG controls, so going from a Volkswagen or Audi to this will be familiar.
    I also like that has plenty of cargo space with the rear seat up.
    I also agree that this base model shows too much cost-cutting, yet it has features that other budget vehicles might not have!
    A very nice, honest review Joseph!

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад +1

      Yes, other trims are available, fortunately! You are right, lots of familiar Volkswagen and Audi bits in this Skoda. My old Toledo was far more luxurious than this, despite being virtually the same car.

    Excellent review as always Sir, very similar looking to our Fabia Mark 3 estate, styling is very similar and interior is near enough identical.

      Yes, they are rather similar in many respects, even down to the platform, engines and some of the switchgear.

    In a word a sensible Skoda, yes there are more practical cars, however it’s pretty good, looks cool too, thank you Joseph

    Really liked these, it was second on my list when I replaced my forbidden fuelled 308. But the Meriva B just edged it for me on practicality, although dimensions wise outside not too dissimilar. The S spec Rapid Spaceback does seem incredibly mean on spec. However for the vast majority and the target market Skoda were pitching at probably the S spec cars have enough on them to suit the buying public. Another stellar review. It's shame these cars get overlooked by glitzy crossovers that actually offer less space.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад

      Yes, you are absolutely right! The boots on the Toledo and conventional Rapid are absolutely huge, much larger than most crossovers. The SE-L Rapids and Xcellence Toledos were the ones to have in terms of standard equipment. Yes, the Meriva B is a similar size to this. I am glad that you enjoyed the video!

    I do like the styling and the finish of both the 2017 Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra but the interior head and legroom of this Skoda Rapid Spaceback linked together with the comfortable ride and smooth quiet 1.2 FSI would certainly win me over. Practicality has always swayed my buying decisions.
    How did you find the driver's seat Sir ?

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад

      The driver's seat was fine, sir, although the one in my Seat Toledo was better. The rear space in this is extremely good. The 1.0 TSI is definitely a better engine, though.

    Another good if a little bland Skoda. It was strange that the Spaceback and Notchback sold alongside each other and the fact that the Spaceback was better equipped. The 1.4 tsi DSG would definitely be quite nippy aswell. I also have a question, does the Spaceback have more space in the back as its name would suggest?

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад

      Yes, the Toledo was actually better equipped for the price than either of the Rapids due to massive Seat discounts. The Spaceback has more headroom than a Toledo, but the boot is smaller. Legroom is about the same. Make of that what you will....

    I have a 2015 Rapid 1.2 tsi sport Se hatchback and bought it with 21k on the clock in September 2018 ..its now got 42k on the clock. I call it the " Tardis "" as its incredibly spacious for a small/ medium hatchback..value and practicality don't come much better .

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Год назад

      Yes, the normal hatchback ones of these in particular are ridiculously spacious, but these Spacebacks aren't too bad either, to be honest. I don't think my uncle is going to be selling his any time soon!

    I had a SEAT Mii 1.0T Courtesy Car for 3wks. I've also driven Ford's 1.0T in Focus, CMax, Fiesta&KA and Citroëns 1.2. VAG have the 1.0T in the Octavia, Karoq, Ateca,Kamiq etc.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад

      Yes, the Seat Mii has a variant of the 1.0 in the later Rapids and Toledos, although it was only ever the Up that had a turbocharged version of it (in fact two versions), the petrol Mii and Citigo only ever had normally aspirated engines. I have also driven the 1.0 Ecoboom engine in a Mark III Focus Estate, it wasn't actually ever available in the Ka or Ka+. The 1.2 Puretech engine was in the 2015 Peugeot 208 we had on Sensible Secondhand Reviews at the end of last year. That wasn't bad. I have driven the 1.0 TSi in a number of Seats and Skodas myself, of course we owned our Toledo with the 110 bhp version from 2017 to 2020.

    Sir, some anoracky VAG group knowledge for you regarding the 1.2 TSI and it’s derivatives:
    Oil filter on top of engine = chain
    Oil filter down below = wet belt

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  9 месяцев назад

      Yes, I just did a video on a Skoda Yeti, which shared some of the same engines, and the later ones have the belt, the earlier ones have the chain, although it is quite confusing... Thank you very much indeed for watching and commenting!

  • @colinhicks4174
    @colinhicks4174 2 года назад

    This model was high on my list for a sensible car for quite a while. Although maybe not an S
    It’s a nice looking car. But cambelts and the DSG gearbox put me off and I bought the Baleno, which has a smaller boot but still good for its size.
    Looking at these, I did note that the Spaceback generally gets higher trim levels than the standard hatch.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад

      Yes, the Toledo gets more equipment, I think. Some people prefer the styling of these, some people prefer the Toledo. The Baleno probably is a very comparable to this. I suppose it depends what you want! The S wouldn't be my first choice either, but my uncle loves it.

    • @colinhicks4174
      @colinhicks4174 2 года назад

      @@lloydvehicleconsulting Yes the Toledo did seem to have more as standard, yours seemed to be very well equipped. No Rapid gets Climate control as standard (apart from the short lived Elegance). So the hatch is cheaper than the Spaceback on the used market.
      Speaking of the used market, have prices risen recently? The last of the Spacebacks are commanding £12k, you used to be able to buy a new one for that (with discount). Prices of some other models I used to follow seem to be up on a year ago, and they are not low mileage examples.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад +1

      @@colinhicks4174 , yes, I am definitely due to do a video on the fact that used car prices have increased significantly in recent months. The Toledo Xcellence was superbly well equipped, if you wanted to get a Rapid/Rapid Spaceback up to that standard, you needed to spend thousands of pounds on options.

  • @Victor-DOOM
    @Victor-DOOM 2 года назад

    I do love the rapid but the other shape I'd have the top spec with auto dsg as I don't talk about manuals or diesels.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад

      Well, the Toledo would be the one to go for has a bit more equipment on the upper trims and was available with an automatic gearbox on the 1.4 TSi and later 1.0 TSi 110 bhp engines.

    • @Victor-DOOM
      @Victor-DOOM 2 года назад

      @@lloydvehicleconsulting yes I like that too but I just like the style of the skoda rapid more than the seat.
      i would have the rapid elegance trim with leather seats but no rear armrest lol
      For now my Mercedes w202 and ital estate is enough for me at the moment anyway.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад

      Yes, the Elegance trim was on the earlier Rapids, later replaced by SE-L. Can't remember if leather/part leather seats were standard now, my Toledo had part leather seats. No reason to get one, though, if you are happy with what you currently have at the moment!

  • @johnedwards3198
    @johnedwards3198 2 года назад

    I'm very surprised/disappointed to see that these are very much available in the market but the hatchback is much rarer with the Toledo (especially Xcellence) even more rare! The Toledo made a very strong case for itself on the used car market before prices went insane!

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад

      Yes, the standard Rapid and Toledo are rarer than the Rapid Spaceback, which has the most conventional shape in comparison with its competitors. Secondhand car prices have indeed increased a fair bit.

      @jasejj 2 года назад

      @@lloydvehicleconsulting I'm not desperate to buy currently and I suspect the situation will settle down, if not out and out crash this time next year. There's a lot of pent up demand that I really can't see being maintained longer term.
      I see the same with houses, prices here in the North East shot up for the first time in a decade earlier in the year but now they're back to refusing to budge.

      Lead in delivery times for popular new cars such as a Ford Focus or a Volkswagen ID.3 are standing at around six to nine months at the moment for factory orders, which is, frankly, a bit crazy.
