  • West Los Angeles - June 24, 2024: A major cleanup operation is set to take place on Monday at the freeway underpass on Centinela Avenue, focusing on a local homeless encampment. This operation will involve a multi-agency task force including members from the Los Angeles Police Department, the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, Clean Harbors Environmental Inc., the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), and the office of Councilwoman Traci Park.
The operation represents a collaborative effort led by the Department of Public Works, alongside Recreation and Parks and Clean Harbors Environmental Inc., aimed at addressing public health and sanitation concerns. This initiative is part of the City of Los Angeles’ ongoing strategy to manage homelessness effectively and underscores the city’s commitment to resolving significant urban challenges.

I drive by this camp all the time. They clean it out and then the homeless return to it in a week. If you don't find a real solution to these problems they just come back.

It's fascinating looking on Google Street View, where you can see all the captures they've made over time. From the first one in 2008 to 2015 not a single sign of homeless activity. Then slowly they appear, in 2016 a single shopping cart and by 2021 as bad as it is now.

They used to focus on this underpass because it's where former County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl would get on the freeway. Auntie Maxine also keeps a condo on Centinela about a block south.

Now that the ninth circuit has been overruled, we can go back to enforcing basic health and safety rules that keep everyone safe. The poor deserve sidewalks that are free of campers, trash, and debris.

When did it become legal and acceptable to defecate and urinate on public streets and to throw garbage. I remember when littering was a fineable offense. I remember when as tax paying citizens we reserved the right to clean streets. Get rid of the politicians you keep voting for.
