- In this video we install a motor in our SCX24 competition build! I test three great options from Mofo RC: Torquebeast 050, Torquebeast 030, and the Buzzsaw! These are great brushed motors that offer great performance with very little effort. With no need to swamp mounting plates, these drop straight into the SCX24. The 050 size will require some slight mods to your battery tray on a stock chassis, but that's all. Carbon brushes, metal pinion gears preinstalled, and a proprietary wiring design are some of the key features that make these motors top contenders for a brushed motor swap.

This is the great thing about RUclips. While these videos are over a year old, they’re still completely relevant to people today! I’m new to the scx24 line, so I’ve been watching all your old videos. You have no idea how invaluable you are to the community. Seriously, thank you.
Only the first one hurts, the rest of the scratches are happiness 😁😁👍👍😎
10000 in just two months you're doing pretty damn good I just don't understand why people ain't giving more thumbs up I feel like it's 10,000 people watch there should be ten thousand lights I appreciate what you do
I appreciate that, thank you!
Yeah, brother. I just started an Ugly Chassis build myself. Gonna be a full custom build... most of my rigs are mainly Mofo RC parts. I love his stuff and Nick is a really cool guy. If you have ANY problems, he's willing to take the time to talk to you. That's a rare thing in the world today. Anyway, cool build, Adam.
Agreed! Nick and I talked for a while when I was looking at parts for my sons monster truck build. He’s a great guy and super knowledgeable.
Domt forget how important it is to all of us to know the cost of all these goodies you are putting together.
Good point! I’ll do a cost breakdown in a future video. It would be fun to do a budget comp build and then put them head to head. What do you think?!
@@CapeCrawlers the budget comp vs expensive 100% would be cool. I am doing the same. I have a bronco and jeep going brushless all out metal on one and thinking of doing the brushed in the other, just debating if I need to do the ESC as well which gets the cost up there.
Budget vs high end build throw down would be VERY interesting and cool to see!
@@CapeCrawlers Yes that would be interesting to see if it's worth the cost of some of those upgrades. I've found that stock set up is better at certain tasks and upgrades are better at others. Seems there is always a big compromise either way.
I ordered a Danchee Ridgerock for myself for Christmas, but it was on back order so I kept shoppin. I found an Axial 24 on sale and ordered it before finding out an hour later the Danchee shipped (oops?). Told wife we could return the Danchee, or give it to my son in law, but my wife decided to give it to my daughter( for me to build, and play with?) winning!! I was considering a 2 speed trans, but this has me thinking Buzzsaw will add that versatility, and save a Chanel for 4 wheel steer.
I would have made the same choice out of those motors. I'm loving the Injora Pro 50 it's a great little motor, loads of easy to control torque and enough wheel speed to bump up obstacles!
The pro 50 is a great motor!
Yeah I’m with you the 50 torque beast, well as always appreciate you sharing until next time peace and chicken grease 😁👍😎
Some of the best brushed motors in the business
Cool. Thanks for the look and testing!
Great comparison of some really nice motors!
Good motor choice, great all around performance . Awesome ground up build my friend, you should be proud . I think it's better to build what you want rather than buy an rtr and upgrade it . That rig climbs like a goat 🐐 . Awesome video as always bro!
Thank you! It is a little beast. I took it out on the rocks today and my word it does amazing!
I am filling a Mofo cart while watching, I might get a buzzsaw as well as the TB50. 👍
It’s worth it to have the buzzsaw for the fun factor. It’s always fun to switch it up!
@@CapeCrawlers my sentiment exactly.
Awesome I just ordered the ugly chassis aluminum, I’m gonna keep it brushed I was thinking maybe mofo big black Yep Here watching
Yeah it was, especially the downhill hill
One thing you could try is running the fruited system with a brushed motor. I think you can use the electronics with brushed and get a very nice smooth and slow set up.
I’ve tried that on the gladiator but only for a minute before I did the brushless motor. I’ve got an extra lizard I could try out so maybe I’ll do that!
@@CapeCrawlers oh that’s cool you should try it and make an Instagram post about it. Or some post about it
Do the B.A.M. with the 24 tooth pinion and race mount, and the 2:12 overdrive worms
Awesome video cool to see how much of a difference these motors have
Thanks for watching! They all definitely have their own personalities and will fill a different need. It’s a great lineup.
Man what a great video as always. What pinion gear are you using with that torque beast 50 motor?
Thank you! I am running the 11t mod 3.
@@CapeCrawlers thanks for the reply, really appreciate it!
Yeah that was a nice climb
Answered all my questions I know what motor I'm going with now Going to be due for one soon keep up the good work Love the videos super informing
Thanks for watching! Which motor are you going with?
@@CapeCrawlers I'm buying 2 of the torque beast 50
What about the mod 5 spur gear. You need that with the torquebeast 50 motor.
I’ve never tried the mod 5 actually
@@CapeCrawlers I purchased that torquebeast motor a month ago. The mofo site said I needed to run the mod 5 gear with it. I’m in the middle of the build right now. I can write you and tell you how it runs if you’d like?
I have 2 PN90's in my rigs and would love to know what you think about them. They often have to be mounted front facing so it can be beneficial for a comp rig, though battery management can be tougher
I’ve heard great things about those but have never seen one in person!
in the process of building an Ugly chassis myself and i am curious to know what youre using for a body mount, both in the rear and the posts up front, im searching everywhere and cant find the info i need. Thanks!
I used a magnet mount up front. Two strong magnets. I bought a deadbolt magnet mount from Amazon and glued it onto the tops of the front chassis rails. The two magnets up front are strong enough to secure the entire body
I have the holmes hobby 50 66t in my comp build just got the injora 1.0 mud terrain mt man I'm I a happy man
I’ve never tried the Holmes but I hear great things about it!
@@CapeCrawlers It's nice not fast but smooth and plenty of punch....but I feel all the silver cans that have same quality guts are the same but who I'm I.. but a garage scientist lol
Do the larger/longer motors besides speed and torque add any additional weight or ballast? Gorgeous rig.
They do add weight, mainly because its just more metal material in the chassis. Because of the positioning, the bigger 050 motors may provide some benefits, but the distribution is skewed a little further back than you would normally want.
what size pinion did it have mod.3 11t ot Mod. 5 8t
Can you help explain what the different options are when choosing the mofo motors I see they sell it as motor only then mod3 , mod 5 , then a platinum mod 3 and platinum mod 5. What’s the difference. What one did you use ? Thanks awesome videos
I will do my best! Platinum motors are the newest ones. I think he improved the internals of the motor for more power and better longevity. Also gave them a new colored case. Mod 3 uses a pinion gear that fits stock transmission gears, so a direct bolt on with no additional mods. Mod 5 uses a different pitch on the pinon gear and meshes with an upgraded spur gear on the transmission. I am using newer motors (some are 2.0, others are 3.0) and mod 3.
Hey Adam I can’t seem to find the video where you are installing motor trans ect. I want to do a build like this and was wondering are you running stock scx24 trans or what are you running in this beast?
I am running the LGRP billet transmission in this one
what do you think are the best all-around big tire?
The swamp king is on top in my opinion
I just bought the scx24 gladiator and have the rcawd portal axles on the way. Plus I have the swamp king tires. Would the buzzsaw motor work with that well or is the torque beast 50 be better overall? I just don’t want to snap a axle lol
It depends on what you like to do. The buzzsaw is surprisingly versatile but doesnt have the low end torque or controllable power delivery that the torque beast does. Neither of them have axle breaking power, so I wouldnt sweat that. Driving style will break axles before the motors do.
For how long those shocks are on your Cliffhanger, what kind of driveshafts are you running? Seems like the stock ones would drop right out in the front, if those shocks drop the tires any lower. Lol
Stock length gladiator shafts. I try to mount them in a way that they don’t drop to such an extreme degree that they cause issues
@@CapeCrawlers nice. 🤟🏻
this is on the stock esc? no lizard pro?
Curious about this rig vs. the Punisher build. How do they compare?!?! What made you “comp” this set up vs. the LGRP?
It would be a great comparison. I think the comp rig is more capable right now; it is very impressive. However, it is under-powered and outclassed by the furitek system in the Ultra. I started the comp rig before I got my hands on the Ultra24. Otherwise I probably would have just done one. But I also was itching to do a completely custom build, body and all.
@@CapeCrawlers … they are both awesome but the Ultra24 really stands out. I thought it was interesting to hear you say that you wish you’d gone with the 3D printed LGRP axles. Surprised me! Everyone is always trying to go aluminum/metal/brass and I’ve often wondered if the 3D printed would be more weight reduction and give you more control over where you target your weight placement? 🤔 I just finished my Injora buggy (waiting on the lizard ultimate) and thinking about the next project. I really like the “Jeep” body LGRP has too.
So why would you go with the 50 size over the 30 i thought the turn is what made it a slow crawl or not
Turn count yes, but the 50 and 30 number here refers to the actual physical size of the motor. The 30 size is ~90t I believe and just didnt have the juice I was after
@CapeCrawlers ok so the 50 just have more power would you say the size is worth it
I might of missed it in the first video sorry if I did but question on the tires on this rig. You running stock foams? flub? and or vented? Thanks man
In this video I’m running the new Injora comp pins in 55MM. Soft crawler innovations lil nova foams. The wheels are vented, so I didn’t have to vent the tires. I did end up changing the tires though. I felt like I needed more clearance. I’m still experimenting with tires right now but I’m leaning towards the rc4wd scramblers
I’m looking for a quieter motor. Right now I have the furitek chameleon and it’s definitely louder than stock. I do a lot of indoor crawling and want my rig to be quieter. How are these for noise?
They are very quiet, much more so than other brushed upgrades I’ve used.
I think my next build will be a comp crawler!
I highly recommend it!
I have the Reefs 99 waiting for mine
I’m on the fence between the reefs 99 and the 179. The NSDRC looks good too!
What type of weight you recommend for a flex machine? Scx24 gladiator
It depends. My gladiator is 650g but I felt like it was necessary because of the tall chassis from the portal axles. I would focus more on performance rather than weight. Keep experimenting until you feel like you’ve got a well planted and functional setup
@@CapeCrawlers any brand in specific?
@@rampagepr3524 treal makes great, heavy brass parts for down low. Their big brass knuckles are crazy heavy. They also have great hex extensions.
@@CapeCrawlers thank you
Want to try these mofo brushed motors but wondering if I need to invest in a Furitek Lizard PRO as well? Are you using the stock esc?
For brushed motors you don’t need the lizard pro. It’s nice to have that customization option with the furitek app, but you won’t get the same benefits with a brushed system versus brushless. I am running stock electronics on the comp build.
@@CapeCrawlers Do you run steel spur gears or stock also? Stock size or mod.5 if you do use them? Thanks for taking the time to respond all these options on their page make me wonder if I should overspend or not haha
@@cctravis stock spur gears in this one. I have steel gears in some other builds (brushless) but kept the stock ratio.
Are you running foams in those tires?
I’m running soft compound crawler innovations micro foams. They are sooooo soft
Have you ever tried the mofo RC brushless motors?
Yes, I’ve got the SMP in my green deadbolt. It’s an incredible motor!
@@CapeCrawlers just subbed! that’s good to know I was looking at the smp and the nano beast and wasn’t sure what would be best. Are there any other options for a brushless esc other than a lizard pro? There so expensive in Australia.
@@grantchamberlain2508 I think furitek is the only option for the 1/24’s. I may be wrong, but I certainly didn’t see any alternatives when doing my builds. They’ve got the market cornered!
