Hope you are still recovering coach Tom. Thanking 6 years younger you for posting this. We just did lockdown in class so studying up on counters is super helpful 🙌
Like I said there’s a counter that I just barely talked about and all you need to do is just reach underneath the guys butt and do a donkey kick reach through now grab the opposite leg pants push it through so needed a belly or whatever you’re gonna do and you can come right to the top if he pushes off you grab that arm in arm bars here in chokes you’re in rat you’re in every type of position that a good jujitsu guy wants to be in!
I stumbled on one of your videos and I watched half interested thinking it was just another one of millions of instructional videos on you tube. To my surprise, I am very impressed and I am really liking your instructional videos! I am a subscriber to your channel and I think it's a gold mine of awesome techniques and detailed instruction! Thanks for sharing
Turning toward the legs is one of the things Eddie teaches, that as a lock down player, you want your opponent to do. Pump the lock down, sit up and get the under hook (if you don't already have it. if you do, even easier) and then its an easy arm triangle or neck crank. If you don't get the triangle because the arm isn't quite in the correct position, then its a stomp to a sweep to a better position for the arm triangle from the top. Not saying this doesn't work, but it is something to be aware of depending on the level of lock down player you are against, especially if they are 10P trained.
Hi Aaron, both myself and MANY of my coloured belts have trained with 10p students and gyms and I am personally fond of many 10p positions and moves. I agree that 10p guys have good lockdown games and I find this technique if caught has NEVER failed me yet. Sure it gets tougher but if you rep this heaps it will literally destroy even a great lockdown as long as you, as the top player, know their game. Give it a try and see how it treats you, I love half guard top ands bottom and find this an irreplaceable movement. Happy rolling (-: Coach Tom Davey
A very good video and well explained. I love lockdown, it's about 90% of my halfguard game as I study 10th planet alot. Here's the problem I've seen with all lockdown counter videos. People are forgetting the upper body control. Lockdown game is not just the leg entanglement. If someone has double unders or same side overhooks, there's only one way I know of to disentangle the leg. In this video, there's no real upper body control (same as other videos, even the Gracie one), if the person has long arms and good with chokes and you do this, you'll fall into the Apollo choke.
I fundamentally agree that it somewhat presupposes that the half guard player isn't controlling the upper body, which is somewhat unlikely, but in TGA's defense, the first way he shows this technique of pinning the arm should make it very difficult to Apollo out of. Ironically, TGA's preferred method (armpit) seems like it would make it considerably easier to grab an Apollo. But, as usual, jiujitsu is a very chaotic game, and while techniques must be taught in a vacuum for clarity's sake, the real world is much more complex.
@@elenchus Old comment I know, but the Apollo choke is an arm triangle, and needs the arm in. If the arm is in the armpit, then it is impossible to get the Apollo choke, you would have to repummel the underhook.
@@kanucks9 I think you're right. The way I was going after the Apollo is in a similar situation, but when someone tries to Americana my (in this case) left hand, and I get it back out and then hook over the head/neck to an s-grip behind the head. But in my case, this is their right arm that's below my left arm (armpit area), not their left arm, like in the video, so I think I got turned around imagining how I do this.
This is amazing! I drilled it with my dummy and it works! Even took it to a judo club(in judo rules, locking the leg like this breaks the pin. So judo guys are good at holding onto this like an anaconda). And no one could hold me!!! Amazing coach Tom!
when doing this, there is a window of oppurtunity where the bottom berson can s-grip your head and arm after facing his hips then switching to the figure 4 allowing him to tap you with the apollo choke/arm triangle, if the legs do get dismantled and they still have the figure 4 on your head and arm, a butterfly sweep is available with the arm triangle/apollo
At 1:27 when he does a lockdown I don’t know why you guys don’t think that when he pushes you off in the swimming under side he has one legs over your leg and it becomes actually in a knee bar and a compression hold.
yep and a nice neck crank if the guy on top turns his back to you like this video is showing, every move has an answer you just gotta know the answer and be swift/skilled enough to use it.
Nice details thank you. The only bit I disagreed with is that elbow and in the arm pit is better? I’ve been choked in that position May times. I find it much better to be over the arm
One of the big things that I’ve learned from my instructor and then when we actually learned block down from the people that do it all you need to do honestly is reach down right where his legs are underneath his butt and all you do is just do a donkey kick it’ll pop that off grab that legs from underneath and then just come up on top I mean he can’t stop you there’s a lot of different ways to do it this is some good stuff right here for sure but it’s like running 2 miles when you only needed to just do the 50 yard dash to get out of it
From 3:05 on, If I was on bottom, I feel like I would quickly be able to roll on my right shoulder, scoot my right hip out, and then have the leverage to reverse the position. Thoughts?
That is a good viewpoint and possible counter but of course it is all about reps and balance for either party. I am clamping their hips quite tightly to prevent that escape so good luck playing with this one in training! (-: Coach Tom Davey
Sorry for asking. Am I seeing a possible sweep from the bottom on 3:34? That's if the one from the bottom is aware of the move you are doing. Please correct me if I am wrong.
There are always counters and times right there are many possible sweep counters. You may be surprised at the effectiveness of this one (-: Coach Tom Davey
Couldn't he hip bump you and roll on top since you are so far on your left side? I didn't see anything to really stop that. Please let me know if I missed anything. Thanks.
awesome stuff mate, appreciate it! we train under anthony perosh in mackay qld. I went to your website to see where you guys are but couldnt see an address. be fun to train at another machado club!
Great to hear Todd. Anthony Perosh is an Australian BJJ and MMA icon. You are in incredible hands. I get the privilege of seeing Anthony each September at the Will Machado Gathering and he also happens to be a 4th degree blackbelt under my coach Master Professor Carlos Machado! (-: Coach Tom
My academy South Coast BJJ & MMA is in Seaford, South Australia about 40 minutes south of the CBD on the coast. You are always welcome at my gym anytime. We always have interstate and international visitors pop in for a class and a roll! (-: Coach Tom
I wish I’d known earlier today, I got my knee popped a little bit today by somebody getting the lock down on me and then rolling hard to sweep. Onward!
I tried this and my lanky training partner threw a wrench into it by s-gripping around my neck and pulling me backwards, and finally upgrading that to a seat belt (like this 4:30) which needless to say didn't work out well for me :(
Keep trying it. I, myself, am a lanky guy and this is the one that works best on me! As a coach I love this but as a grappler, I hate this. In a good way of course! Never give up trying! (-: Coach Tom
That is possible technically but never happens to me or my guys once you understand the position. Trust me, guys in my academy love backtakes! Good luck! (-: Tom Davey

I was wondering what video they have been watching to escape my lockdowns 🤨😤. It was fun submitting brown and black belts as a blue belt 😅
And, as my Sensei frequently reminds us, "Don't spin out of a lockdown!"

Electric underhook tho
the cam is a little bit shaky, but the video is great.
Good video but your cameraman is terrible
I’m seeing the holes of this tech. I feel this is a muscle and force tech instead of proper trap and flow tech. I say the lockdown still beats this.
that lockdown is not super tight...
Just show the move already. Dont need 10 mins to break a lockdown. Jesus.
Why I hate BJJ people referring to what they do as fighting and being fighters. Ridiculous. A punch ends this situation. It’s wrestling not fighting.
