  • The Buffalo Police Department released bodycam footage showing officers opening fire on a man who allegedly shot at officers during a high-speed pursuit on March 29, 2022. Officers approached the suspect about his window tints in a parking lot and found out that his registration was suspended. A high-speed chase began after the driver fled the scene. During the chase, the suspect allegedly shot at officers while driving his vehicle. The chase ended when the driver crashed his vehicle into a billboard pole. Police opened fire on the suspect, who allegedly continued to shoot at officers. The suspect was apprehended and taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for his injuries. An Erie County judge indicted the suspect on 7 felony counts and one misdemeanor. Three officers were injured from gun shot wounds.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Of the three officers who were shot during the pursuit of Kente Bell, 28, this past March, two were hit by friendly fire.
On Wednesday morning, Erie County District Attorney John Flynn provided an update on the charges against Bell, who has been indicted on five counts of first-degree attempted murder. Originally, he was only facing three counts.
During the chase, which spanned numerous busy streets and temporarily crossed into Cheektowaga before returning to Buffalo, numerous shots were fired. Flynn believes at least 14 came from Bell.
DA Flynn reveals new details on high-speed chase, man accused of shooting 3 BPD officers
Of those shots fired, at least one struck a Buffalo police officer. Two other officers were hit by bullets from other officers, they are officers Joseph McCarthy and Christopher Wilson. The DA made it clear that only one of the five counts of attempted murder against Bell pertains to the officer who was allegedly shot by Bell. The friendly fire bullets that struck the other two officers are not counted in those charges.
Although every shot fired by a police officer was legally justified, according to officials, Flynn indicated that some of the officers should have been safer about their weapon use.
“There’s no penal law that articulates common sense, so I can’t charge any Buffalo police officer with a violation of common sense,” Flynn said.

It’s hard to determine what the best course of action would’ve been while dealing with such a dangerous and violent criminal, but no one can afford to fire that many rounds in the general direction of homes and buildings as the probability of hitting a civilian is too high. As a former police officer, that is one of the most reckless displays of gunfire from police I've seen in a while. The crossfire, shooting toward civilian cars, houses, just baffles me. This could have been handled MUCH differently. Just really glad no innocents were harmed.

Man thank you! All these idiots blindly supporting the cops in this incident. That was a nightmare of crossfire with each officer. Plus all the houses that were the backstop while the suspect was driving by. I want to know how many houses, civilian vehicles, civilians themselves and officers were hit with the insane mag dumps going on. No care for anyone they are sworn to "protect" just plain tunnel vision and recklessness. Every shot that was made had a civilian in a car or homes as the backstop. This should not be supported at all. Thank you for pointing this out as a former law enforcement officer. Insane how there is no accountability for police these days. The constitutional cops need to get these types out of the departments.
