Will admit I was bad at explaining the resolution thing. I now know R6 and 1DX mark III are same resolution (and one commentor said the same sensor). I thought the mark III was higher for some reason. I accept the low resolution on that camera due to its speed and durability and have always wished for more resolution in that body. Professionals around me have actually left canon due to their lack of a 40+ megapixel sensor. Everyone has different needs but I know for me and colleagues a lot of clients want that higher resolution.
All due respect, but as a high end pro photog, your perspective is way removed from the world of beginners and students. Your students must be pretty rich indeed to afford a "little $2,500 camera". It's even a big chunk or challenge for many full time working folks to afford or justify. I'm thinking a used 6D which you maligned would likely fit most students' budgets better, considering the additional needs for lenses, etc. And they might even learn the basics of photography better (e.g. composition, exposure triangle, timing a shot) without the distractions of new state of the art electronic assists. These are great tools for the working pro who must deliver results, but crutches for a student who still needs to learn the basics. Nothing wrong with sharing your experience with the R6 but I think the whole "student camera" angle is highly skewed and misleading.
I mentor many college students who are actively deciding between 5D4, R6 and similar bodies. Yes I understand it’s expensive and yes I understand all those factors you put forward but many students in college at photography programs own cameras in this genre/level of quality. I know college students that own Nikon D5’s even. there is about 8 years worth of totally usable cameras for professional use or student use. However if you’re looking at buying a new camera currently I’d never suggest someone buy into a system that is possibly/probably on the way out. You also can still use old used lenses on this camera system via the adaptor like a $400 24-105 or $500 200 2.8 etc. that all being said, it’s my RUclips with my opinions and we are here to gather multiple inputs for people making decisions and mine is just one of them. It’s almost never the case that an “affordable” (in my opinion) full frame body can keep up with the top of the line cameras available in the world, that’s the best reason to suggest it to college students. When I saved up from my retail job to buy a camera in college it was a joke compared to a D3/1D mark IV/1ds mark iii etc. I would have been stoked to have such a similar feature set to the 1dx mark iii for less than half the price.

I see no difference. The Canon EF-RF adaptor works perfectly. I use EF and RF lenses and both work very well. Highly recommend using it with EF lenses!
As a professional coming from the 1DM Mark II with a 20.1 megapixel sensor (and now using the R6) this description isn’t accurate. Only a novice photographer would think that more megapixels means more professional. Sometimes you need less megapixel and more dynamic range and other time you need higher megapixel for cropping. Gear doesn’t make you professional, no matter what camera you own. Consistently getting paid to take professional images & video is what what makes someone professional.

Hi, I’m finally thinking of switching from my 5D3 to the R6 while keeping my ef lenses. I’ve heard some people say the ef lenses actually work better on the R5/R6 than on the 1DX, 5D3. Is this something you’ve experienced?
Yes. 100%. Most notably the 50+85 1.2. But yes. Some lenses will focus even better even compared to more modern cameras. Also 100% no issues with EF glass on RF in general. So don’t feel the need to instantly change that out.

Very good information...thank you. I believe I heard you say that you usually shoot 1DX Mark II and 1DX Mark III...they are both 20mp sensors. Why wouldn't the R6 satisfy your megapixel needs? I believe I heard you say you needed the 45mp R5. What happened? I guess I missed something. I need to watch the video again.
Those are hovering closer to 30. About 26 or something. Which doesn’t seem like a big difference but I’ve always felt they were low too but the speed and high iso outweigh that. Now that being said for journalism and similar these are totally fine. For commercial work, magazine work, etc. I have many clients and colleagues that all want higher resolution. Many friends actually dumped Canon in recent years in favor of Sony and Nikon due to them offering 40+mp cameras. Again everyone’s needs are different and many colleagues would be fine with 20mp. Probably should have clarified this a bit more. Still new to RUclips (edit: I’m wrong. It’s 20mp too. As pointed out in another comment)
I shoot stills exclusively; animals and landscapes in and around Jackson Hole and Yellowstone. After looking at the R5 and R6 I got the R6 for its better low light performance and the "feel" of the images. I love the subtleties of mood that this captures! And I figured there would be an R5s (I didn't expect the R3!) that I'd be lusting after soon. I'm super happy with the R6 and don't feel that It's a step down from the R5, more of a step sideways. I've never had voice recording and don't shoot editorial or sports subjects, so for me, that wasn't a hit. Good review! (Except the sensor thing you caught in your comment.) :)
I definitely did not expect the r3 either. But agree an even higher resolution body will likely be coming. I’m so curious as to what the R1 will have. I’m assuming that will be the global shutter camera and in the short term the R3 is kind of like the A1/A9II direct competition but we will see. I also fear the R1 will have a very hefty price tag so maybe the R3 will be pretty reasonable.
For my photojournalism work the R6 has been ideal (especially with the 28-70 f2) now I have to decide if I should I sell the Fuji 50R for the R5 for all my portrait work but for the newspaper work the R6 files are more than enough for myself, great videos btw!
Yes! I love the 28-70 f2 so much. I personally find the files from the R5 to be very impressive though I have little experience with the Fuji 50R. The R5 will obviously be faster etc. both in FPS but also AF and reactivity.
@@BrettCarlsen yeah I think I will borrow the R5 at some point from Canon so I can compare the files but yeah that zoom lens especially on certain assignments is a dream come true
I second that. It’s the first game changer lens for me as I now rarely want my primes. I mean I still do for things but to carry one lens that does so much at f2 and so sharp is amazing for me. It’s a pretty big difference in resolution to me. I edit on a 5K monitor and it’s the first time I can zoom in and have more detail haha.
@@BrettCarlsen Exactly as crazy as that lens is I no longer need to bring three prime lenses and it’s a perfect example of how effective being able to borrow equipment truly is and of course they gave me enough time and I could sample that on real jobs to know that it’s worth the price
Yeah! I completely agree. I’m struggling to sell my EF L primes still haha but it makes the idea digestible. If I only had the R5 and not the mark III’s I’d probably be able to pull the trigger
Thanks for the insight. probably one of the most useful reviews and recommendation for a camera in this price range. I think it's also a good recommendation for students (of photography) like myself who are shopping in this price range.
Thank you! So the electronic is completely silent for one. Also it can fire at 20 frames per second as opposed to 12 FPS of the mechanical. However electronic shutters (this one included) can introduce rolling shutter which can warp or distort fast moving objects. Therefore I have not used it especially due to mechanical being so quiet. I will use it on film/video sets that I photograph on as then I will have complete silence and people should not be moving enough to distort. Hope that helps!
Anything on the market today is a great option honestly. This camera just does EVERYTHING well. So there is no concessions to be made. But seriously if you’re learning there is no bad options out there. Find what fits in your budget and make work non stop. That’s the most important thing. If getting this camera takes you 6 months of saving and the other options take 1 month of saving. Well then save for a month and spend 5 months learning. But I do seriously think this camera can take you through a ton of different things with 0 limitations and that is worth more money
20MP is more than enough... the 1DX MKIII uses the same sensor with the same resolution... I remember the days where people were getting 8MP cameras and were super happy. 20MP is more than enough, plus the file sizes aren't ridiculously large. This camera is more than enough for about 99% of the people out there. Also, the Regular EOS R is an amazing camera as well, sans dual card slot.
They are all amazing. Personally for my clients I need more resolution and many fellow professionals echo that sentiment (why many switched to Nikon D8xx series or A7R series) but I agree for many other professional applications 20 is great.
Great review thanks for the honest review , I've been trying to decide on on upgrading my 5D mk iv . Trying to decide on R5 or R6. They both look like great cameras compared to what I have
I’d agree. I would say the R5 would be a more overall noticeable upgrade as you get the added benefit of additional resolution etc. but both are very impressive and I’d you don’t need more than 20MP then the R6 is incredible too.
@@BrettCarlsen yeah I'm not sure I really need the extra MP. it is a downgrade in MP from the 5D but Its probably less noticable unless I really had to crop in , I really only shoot as hobby and for friends just like taking lots of pictures lol . I like the moveable screen and the AF system looks like a big improvement ... Thanks for the reply
Nice review. Happy using the R6 for now as I transition into mirrorless - much better than the original R. However, still waiting for the high MPIX Canon R.
Glad to hear and I completely agree on 6 vs r I’m excited for that one too. Some may feel it’s over kill but would love to defeat medium format in a R style body
I understand it is not the R5, but calling it a “student camera” is a little bit of an injustice. It is the same sensor as the flagship DSLR, along with the same autofocus as the R5. Minus 8k video and a few other bells and whistles, it is pretty close to pro spec from what i can tell
Great question. I think the R6/R5 are better in virtually every way for photography. I’m personally a big fan of optical viewfinders and I’d still pick the R6 or 5 over my mark 4 (I sold mine to get the 5D4 and didn’t regret it at all). Edit: sold my 5D4 to get the R5**
My bad. Typo. I sold my 5D4 to get the R5 and despite my liking optical viewfinders more than EVF I still heavily prefer the R5/6 to the 5D mark IV. Haha my bad. Get the 6!
thanks Brett im an older photographer got out of the business sold all my old canon stuff and jumping back in was on the fence about this camera but i think you made my mind up thanks again and Tessa is overrated lol.
Why do we now need more than 20 megapixels? How did the photography world manage to survive for over a hundred years? People are already saying 30 megapixels isn’t enough, soon they will be saying the same for 40 and 50. People have been taking amazing pictures long before 45 megapixel cameras and will continue to do so.
Well film had pretty high resolution. Probably between 20-30 and that’s 35mm. Many shot medium format and large format for a multitude of reasons but resolution being one of them (myself included). So that’s not entirely true. It depends on your clients. Mine want high res for their output needs. So even a modest crop on 20mp wouldn’t be enough. I agree with what you’re saying and shot with a 6 and 12 megapixel camera for years. However if there is no technical downflaw (crazy grain, slow speed, etc) I don’t have much to complain about a better file/more output options.
Brett you just broke my heart about the R6. I just bought this camera But I’m no where near you skill set not even close but love your work brotha. But I’m still learning a tone in photography have not touch video yet.
@@BrettCarlsen I do coming from a 70D it’s massive difference. What do you recommend for video editing mind I’ve never done any videos work something I can use for small time video usage.

I am disappointed that no one is talking about low light fast action sports(friday night football or basketball in bad gym lighting). I need good quality, low noise photos. Like you said this works for pro or college sports. Those are day time or in perfectly lit gyms. Can you do a review for us low light sport action shooters?
Ugh. I know. I tried. The one game I took it to (I don’t shoot much high school anymore) was a literal hurricane like rain storm and I didn’t want to destroy a borrowed camera. iso etc. I feel I would have no worries. This is NOT based on R6 but on other mirrorless or live view mode tests of canon’s cameras - I find DPAF does quite well in low light. That’s not real world or an opinion I’d rely on. Basketball you have the added benefit of being able to rely on face tracking a bit more than you could in HS football due to helmets etc. the camera is incredible so I’d venture you’d have no issue. If you’re explicitly shooting sports I personally find the OVF 1DX style cameras a bit easier to track sports with. Again that’s personal opinions. Many friends (and myself) have got great stuff with R5 and R6.
@@BrettCarlsen Thank you. I currently use a Canon 1Dx mark 1 and a 5D3. Our gyms are old and suck and I struggle with these two cameras. So many good vibes about the R6, I think i need to give it a shot. If all else fails, it will make a great wildlife and bird camera!
Your files will 100% be better. I can guarantee that. I personally think you’ll have fantastic luck with it in every other way too. But I’d rather under promise when suggesting someone buy a camera haha. My best answer is, if someone told me you have to work full time with R6 bodies for stills. I could without issue. And that’s saying so much for a “budget” full frame body. Personally I bought the r5 for my needs and clients, personally for peak action sports I prefer the 1DX mark III. But again I could replace them all with R6’s and do my job. Aka, you’ll be stoked. But definitely pick up spare batteries. Everyone I know finds they use more than other cameras and I concur. I use 2-3 for an NFL game. Including a lot of pregame etc.
@@BrettCarlsen That is awesome. Thx. I should have mentioned, I shoot with at least f2.8. Also the 50mm and 85mm 1.8 for basketball. Where do you shoot? I cant wait, since there is no sports here until 2021. Now if i can just get my hands on the R6 to play with at these upcoming college games! Be safe out there.
I’ve covered the NFL for about 8 seasons now. Usually do about 15-20 games per season. Normal years I also cover 6-10 D1 NCAAF too. But this year just the NFL and my normal commercial and editorial work. Big apertures help a ton with any focus system. Hope you like the camera! I really think you will. I love my R5 and still in shock I can shoot the NFL with a “5D”.
and the r5 is not to learn photography? the r6 more sensitivity to focus in low light (-6.5 underexposure) than r5, 20 mpx the sensor more sensitive to light and less noise than the r5, there is no perfect camera, with all of them you learn photography.
You can as well. I’ve defended the statement a few times on here. Multiple college students i mentor have asked me about and are shopping for the camera is why I suggested that use. Have also suggested it to professionals

Very welcome! Probably should have explained better.
The 1DX mk III has a 20.1 megapixel sensor, according to Canon's website.
Guess you’re right. Well I stand corrected.
@@BrettCarlsen Hi Brett, sorry I didn't see this until today! And yeah, the R1 will probably cost as much as a car.
Thanks so much for the kind words. Means a bunch! It’s an incredible camera.
Great review! Is there an advantage to using the mechanical over electrical shutter? Or is it preference?
Thanks for the review bought the R6 today and already love it!
Sick! I have an AF setup and full settings video you should check out. Amazing camera
@@BrettCarlsen Already did!
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Is it worth the 2300$ as a Hs student I hate working and love working for myself. Is it worth 153h of work.
Or should I go for a DSLR, personally I feel like dalr wont be a thing and my first Camera will be used for a good 3-5 years.
Great, very informative from someone who has actually used the camera in assignments. Thanks
Very welcome!
Thanks for your Great Review R6 video,. Shall I use Canon EF lenses ? And tell me what about picture quality used by EF lenses in R6?
I have used EF lenses on the R5 and R and R6. All work very well. I’d highly suggest them. Picture quality is fantastic.
Thanks for your immediate reply
R6 20 megapixels and Mark 4 is 30 megapixels than how will come picture quality good ?
They are both good. If you want higher resolution the R5 will be the way to go.
Thanks for reply, I want Mark 4 equal range in mirrorless
This was great!
Nice review. Happy using the R6 for now as I transition into mirrorless - much better than the original R. However, still waiting for the high MPIX Canon R.
Glad to hear and I completely agree on 6 vs r
I’m excited for that one too.
How would you mark the R6 compared to the 5Dmark4 for allround use (only photography)? Which one would you pick?
Great question. I think the R6/R5 are better in virtually every way for photography. I’m personally a big fan of optical viewfinders and I’d still pick the R6 or 5 over my mark 4 (I sold mine to get the 5D4 and didn’t regret it at all). Edit: sold my 5D4 to get the R5**
Brett Carlsen Hey Brett, now I’m confused. You sold your 5Dm4 to get an R5 or do i misread your reply?
My bad. Typo. I sold my 5D4 to get the R5 and despite my liking optical viewfinders more than EVF I still heavily prefer the R5/6 to the 5D mark IV.
Haha my bad. Get the 6!
Brett Carlsen thanks!
Brett Carlsen thanks man! Based on which criteria?
thanks Brett im an older photographer got out of the business sold all my old canon stuff and jumping back in was on the fence about this camera but i think you made my mind up thanks again and Tessa is overrated lol.
Very welcome!
Haha they may be. But they are fast and hands free when I’m lazy haha
Nice Review!! Thanks for you insight!
Glad it was helpful! Sorry it wasn’t too fancy
Great video, thanks for sharing
Very welcome!!
Brett you just broke my heart about the R6. I just bought this camera But I’m no where near you skill set not even close but love your work brotha. But I’m still learning a tone in photography have not touch video yet.
I’m a little confused by what you mean. But camera is amazing and you could shoot anything the world with it and learn to be just like me!
@@BrettCarlsen Im bad at writing humor sorry Brett 😂.
Haha no worries!! You’ll love the camera though
@@BrettCarlsen I do coming from a 70D it’s massive difference. What do you recommend for video editing mind I’ve never done any videos work something I can use for small time video usage.
Davinci Resolve is free and very powerful. I don’t use it but it’s very full featured and great. There is a paid version that adds professional features but free is great for most people and to get learning
Great review, don't quite agree with it being a hobbyist or a student camera.
I shoot dog sports in low light and the R6 is great I sold my 1dx mkII ALSO 20mpx so yeah I like it.
Your channel is excellent. You'll be at 10,000 soon! Cheers-
That would be fun! Feels good to see people enjoying the content!
Loved this review! Finally a review that just focused on the still camera side of it and not going on about the video stuff.
Hahaha someone had to do it!
I had a chance to shoot a couple 49er games a while back but no luck getting a pass for a few years now. I have 2 mountain west games coming up to shoot.
That hat is making me hungry for some Music City BBQ!
Peg leg is my jam!
and the r5 is not to learn photography? the r6 more sensitivity to focus in low light (-6.5 underexposure) than r5, 20 mpx the sensor more sensitive to light and less noise than the r5, there is no perfect camera, with all of them you learn photography.
You can also learn on the R5 or rebel or anything. All amazing.
Good video for R6 Review
Thank you
Student camera? At $2,500? That must be for rich students. I am sure you can use it for professional work in my opinion.
You can as well. I’ve defended the statement a few times on here. Multiple college students i mentor have asked me about and are shopping for the camera is why I suggested that use. Have also suggested it to professionals
Great video bud and yes I'm the one who gave this video the 69th like and I have to say one thing. NICE.
😂😂
