Hey Brett, thanks a LOT. I really got a lot out of your video after opening the box and trying to deal with the complexity of the menu. You communicate without yelling and convey useful information in a helpful and clear way. I appreciate it.
Thank you......switched from 1dx to R6 a few months ago and this helped with some of the settings I didn't know much about. Need another mirrorless and debating between another r6 or getting an r5. Hope you get your Tesla!!!!
I don't want Tesla, I want Canon R5 with all it's best lenses :) I just bought R6(still waiting on it) and I'm grateful to you for making this video, it's very helpful for first setup! I hope you'll get your Tesla soon enough!
New to the R6 and your video was quite helpful but there is so much to learn. Will visit it again later as I have questions that you didn't address. Somewhere I disabled the sound of the shutter and I'd like to change it back to enabled. How do I do that? Thanks!
You TOTALLY need to set up AF method selection to the main dial!! Being able to go back and forth between the modes is much better. I was on a shoot with my R6 and didn't realize I had registered a custom setting before I changed this...I overshot the method I wanted and then had to cycle back around - and had to do it again. haha Great little video I plan to share with friends because I align pretty closely to your setup as well. ....Tesla....
I did end up swapping to that. Now I tap the back button and just turn my dial. Much faster. The original setup was more similar to my 1DX series cameras but the dial is WAAY better! Thanks so much!
Hi Brett! Thanks for your honest review! I would like to ask you a question. In your opinion, as professional photographer, what would you choose out of two cameras, which one would you take over the other - R6 or 1DX II, if you had to? I am not professional (yet), meaning I do not make money from photography yet, but do take photography very seriously and aiming at top level skills as well as the equipment. I shoot landscapes, wildlife and portraits. I am pushing my camera to the limits and feel the need to have much better camera then my simple Canon EOS 70D. I really do need a good AF, ISO, FPS for shooting in a different conditions (animals in dusk and dawn, owls in the dark woods, etc). I do not want to spend money on something that is a little better then my camera is and then spend money again on a better camera, if it makes sense... I do own good collection of EF lenses, including a few portrait, ultra wide, telephoto F2.8 and big telephoto 600mm, so I am set there for a while. 7D II will not work, due to low ISO range; 5D IV - not enough FPS and they say the AF isn’t as good as 1DX II / III, especially with big lenses. 1DX III is not in my budget range. The R5 maybe, but it is similar to the R6 in that regard, except for the MP (for photography perspective only), has lower ISO range and is more expensive then the R6. I figured I could buy an R6, or for a $1000 more I can get used 1DX II in an excellent condition (which, to be honest, attracts me more then the R6). I know the R6 has super cool animal eye AF and other new techs, but 1DX II has better “constant” FPS, that doesn’t decrease with the battery life, like in the R6, has more rugged built and better weather sealing. I do use my camera in different environments (extreme cold, heat, rain, snow, deserts, woods, open fields, etc.). Does the R6 have the edge over 1DX II overall do you think? Thank you ahead! Igor.
Hey Igor. Having used all the cameras in these ranges, I think for what you do the R6 would be a better fit. I think the files will be cleaner from the R6 as it has a newer sensor. In addition to that the animal eye AF is really quite incredible. I’ve used it on a bird feeder one day with my 600+2X and it just amazed me even on hummingbirds. I agree there will be some small advantages in both directions. Build quality would certainly be one for the 1DX mark II. If you stripped everything else away the files should/will look better from the R6 (noise, dynamic range, etc) as it has that newer sensor. That would sway me in that direction personally. But I think you could nit pick and go either way happily. Personally I’d go R6 for what you do and I LOVE optical viewfinder and the 1DX form factor, so I really mean it that I think it’s a better fit. If you can, try one out. It’s really impressive.
@@BrettCarlsen Thank you Brett so much for your quick response and the advice from your perspective! I really appreciate it! Now I need to do some more thinking before I make my final decision. I do agree about newer sensor and the technology in the R6, but that EVF thought... I checked it out in Best Buy and wasn’t too excited about the EVF and the LCD being on... I’ll have to have another look at again. Thank you very much again for your opinion! It’s important for me to hear it from full time busy professional photographer!
You’re very welcome. I agree with that sentiment. Believe me. I love optical viewfinder. Prefer it. I think you can’t go wrong and I seriously mean that.
I once got to ride in a Tesla, it was an amazing experience. That information is not photo related, but its important information I think you should know Brett. Btw just got my R6. Loving it so far. Shooting high school cross country this weekend and hopefully some other team sports once this our local authorities allow more sports. Soccer and baseball are supposed to be gearing up. Keeping them fingers crossed!
I have test drove one once. It makes you immediately want one hahaha. Probably a few years off for me still. You’re going to love it for everything but sports that show faces easily it’s a game changer
I went from Canon AE-1 back in 1983, then Mamiya 645 in the 90's, then Canon 30D, 50D, 60D, 70D in the early 2000's. Then to Canon 6D to Canon R6 and I love it! Now my wife shoots wedding with the 6D, I won't let her touch my R6!! LOL.....

I recommend AUTO 2
Tesla - Thanks for the great! Looks like the R6 mkii AF menu is slightly different. Nevertheless, I got some really good info on the menu system. Cheers.
Great video. So much to go through and glad you focused (no pun intented) on the settings you used rather than everything. I've found having the dual card slot works best for me with images and video recorded to standard card 1, with card 2 just taking a backup of images (mostly do image work).
Nice. Yeah a few friends run backups to another card. One puts a giant card in his second slot and just lets it run even across multiple events which I thought was smart
Tesla dawg, thanks for the video. Very interested in the filming and custom setups so I'll be looking around and through your channel to find those bits tips and tricks. Have a great 2021!
18:00 Wow. NEVER thought of doing that. I'll keep the RATE button to "rating" since I use Lightroom and can select "rated images only" . But to scroll through them with the other dial...Great! Thanks!
I just picked up my new Canon R 6 on 9/11/20! Coming from using the Canon 5D Mark III and back button focus.... does it still make sense to use back button focus on the R6 if I plan on using the AI capabilities? If yes, where do I set that up, use the custom button in the menu? Great video thanks for your knowledge!
I think so! I have a video on my channel for the R5 and it works perfectly for the R6 as well. Great place to start at least but I’ve been using it for everything.
Tesla! 😂 Thanks, nice video! I followed along with my own camera and made some changes based on your settings. Now I'll have to try it out and see how it works for me. 👍
the menu turn the picture on computer and camera, always put on : turn on PC but NOT turn on display. When you shooting portrait mode, it is nicer to have all picture filling the display, rather then turning and using only half of that beautiful screen!
I shoot a lot of realestate interiors and always have the camera set to neutral as if gives a different a totally starting point in your raw processing. The std setting for interiors and high contrast scenes gives you a harder more high contrast image to start with. You can always dial contrast in later it is the same thinking as using C-Log for video.
Well if you shoot RAW none of those settings matter. They only affect jpeg files and the embedded preview you see on the back screen. Adobe Lightroom (or camera raw) processes the file with their own engine regardless of your settings. So I just like to see a higher contrast image on my preview so I know if I’m clipping sooner...even if I might not be but I want it closer to what my final image will look like. Try swapping picture style to black and white and then import a file into lightroom to verify.
I have an R6 a short time and doing tests, photo and video, when it reaches 1" or less appears the message Busy, the memories are of good capacity, the ISO settings off, I did the test in 7D II and does not appear the message, it may be some wrong configuration.
Thanks for the great tips. FYI, Exposure Simulation is best left off when shooting strobes in a studio since the camera will have much smaller apertures in most cases than typical "fill flash" scenarios.
Hi Brett, I stumbled on your video and so glad I did, so helpful. Question on my R6: when you get to Image Stabilizer mode I don't have the IS mode showing as an option, it's only showing me an option for "Digital IS". I guess I wouldn't worry about it but there's a weird abnormal sort of grinding noise coming from my 100 mm Macro lens when the image stabilization is turned on the lens while on this camera. I turned it off and the horrible grinding noise stopped. So the only thing I can think is that the camera has IS turned on and that it is fighting with the IS on my macro lens? But does that mean that I can assume IS is on and working on the camera body? I use my 70-200 a lot and I don't want to have shaky images if I turn IS off my lens. Any thoughts? Is there a number I can call Canon, do they offer online technical support? Thanks so much!!
Canon does have tech support. I’d look on Canon website in your country (Canon USA would be mine) I’d be surprised if the in body stabilization affects the lenses. The in body setting may be turning your lens IS on and off. No noise on other canon cameras?
Extremely helpful - thank you! "Signs, signs Everywhere there's signs Blocking up the scenery Breaking my mind Do this, don't do that Can't you read the sign?" --- Tesla 🥳
21:39 - Viewfinder only - interesting fact about these cameras (starting with the EOS R) is that the EVF uses more battery power than the big LCD screen. I had to read it in the manual myself before I believed it because it's counter-intuitive. I have my EOS R and R5 bodies configured so I have to *manually* change from EVF to LCD and back. I don't want the camera doing this for me.
I’ve noticed this too. My problem is the speed at which I grab cameras (I work with 2-3) I can’t waste time switching the display. I tried it for a few shoots and continuously was fumbling with it all day. But that’s good to know as I was definitely feeling like that was true.
@@BrettCarlsen - On the EOS R I used the checker-box-looking button (AF point button) to toggle between LCD and EVF. But now on the EOS R5 I'm using the front DOF button since I'm unable to use the front DOF button the same way I did with the 5D Mk4. I have both EOS R5 bodies set up this way and it works really well to quickly toggle because my finger is already nearby.
That’s smart. I’ve been using that to bring up the crop menu. Shooting NFL with it a bit, often I’m so far away I can save some data by using 1.6x. However this seems like something I’d use more (as you have it).
@@BrettCarlsen To get into the crop modes I use the 'Q' button and crop modes are in the bottom right corner. Since the crop modes are the only thing I need to get to quickly in this menu I press 'Q' and highlight 'FULL' so it's ready to go when I need to make the change. Then all I have to do is press 'Q' and roll the top wheel (closest to the shutter button) one click to the right and I've gone from 'FULL' to '1.6x' mode. When I'm done, I press 'Q' and roll one click to the left and I'm back in 'FULL' mode again. It works great because I can do this just as easily through the viewfinder so I don't even need to take the camera away from my eye to do it. I'm in the process of putting together a video on my EOS R5 experience, I'm about a month later than planned but hope to have it out soon.
Very awesome. I’m always changing white balance and other settings in Q but that setup makes sense. I’m enjoying (as always) how many ways there are to set things up and get to things. Hate when something only has one route to a setting etc.
Really grateful it helped out! Happy to answer any questions if you have any. I don’t own the 6 but the 5 is similar (did an AF settings video for that which translates)
Please compare the r6 to the 1dxiii as they have same sensor and processor so wouldn’t the r6 be like a cheaper way to get sports shooting on a budget ?
It totally would! I don’t believe it’s the exact same sensor. The mark III sensor is very good and a bit higher resolution. The mark III is definitely superior but if you’re learning the R6 is totally capable. I think it’s the best student photography camera I’ve ever seen
I just subscribed to your channel today so you may already have one, but You should do a what’s in your gear bag video, there aren’t a ton of photojournalists on RUclips and it would be pretty cool to see what’s in a photojournalists camera bag.
No worries! It’s subjective. I’ve used it my whole career. Switched in college and couldn’t understand why people used it. But I found it to be much better quite quickly. I have an R5 AF setup video that can be used with the R6 and it is a good back button setup to try
Whenever I turn my r6 off, the screen takes a few seconds to tell me to keep the cap on when turning off the camera and it’s super annoying and I want it gone, I haven’t had a lens on it because I’m waiting for my adapter but I wanna know if it’s just with the cap on. And Tesla
That happens with a lens on too the times I’ve noticed it. (Often I turn cameras off without looking). I too prefer to have less “tips” if you could call this one. Maybe it’s quicker with automatic sensor cleaning turned off (if it’s even on).
Did you try switching it to smooth? I didn’t notice a big difference but maybe it’s a bigger difference person to person. That’s a bummer man. I’m definitely a optical viewfinder fan myself
@@BrettCarlsen I have it set on smooth and shooting motocross last night I felt like it was lagging. I've been shoot action sports for 15 yrs and I actually threw away all images from the track last night. I'm gonna have to just be patient with this new body.
I’ve had mixed luck personally in hyper critical things regarding timing. Personally I find myself shooting earlier with the mirrorless as I have 12 FPS and I too feel a little late when I try to keep up. Disclaimer: I hate when people motor drive to find a picture rather than time it properly and I’m totally an optical viewfinder fan.
@@BrettCarlsen Appreciate the feedback on this. Gonna shoot a ton this weekend with it. I went out this evening and shot some street photography and noticed it has issue focusing shooting into the sun. Have you noticed any issue with that? I know I'll get use to the viewfinder eventually.
I agree. Allegedly will perform the exact same as R5 just at 20 megapixels. Seems like a great fit for a ton of people especially those that don’t need resolution or students.
Brett Carlsen Ok watching the video now.. lol.. (thumbs up first THEN watch!)... GREAT tip on switching the Image jump from 10 to locked... then the Rate button to lock... makes a TON of sense for PhotoMechanic ingest!!!
Yeah! I think they added this in approx 1Dx era or so and it makes life very easy. I tag in order so if you get interrupted you can just hop to the last tagged photo and work forward and go back to shooting without losing your place.
I’m not entirely sure. I’d imagine it could possibly shift your timing on when it fires? Maybe. I’ve never used it really so unsure how it accomplishes controlling flicker. Historically if you were to do it manually you slow down or shift your shutter speed to be “in sync” with the flicker
Does anyone know on the R6 and I'm sure the R5 too why the custom menu set is only available in photo mode? (C1,C2,C3) On my Canon 6D I had them set to 24F, 30F, and 60F however I can't figure out how to do it on the R6 the menu only seems to be available in photo mode
Liked the summary a lot, but boy, you don't half whizz through things and also flip between the options without us having a chance to read the accompanying help text?
Hmm. I can’t think of any but possibly it’s in video mode or maybe being in program or something similar limits the menu? Only big shift I’ve seen is when being in video vs photo mode and then heading to settings.
You should use the Electronic Front-Curtain Shutter to avoid the vibration of the mechanical shutter,,,,, so I recommend to you use this mode better than the mechanical one. Explanation here: photographylife.com/what-is-electronic-front-curtain-shutter
I keep it off unless I need it. I agree but I also turn it off on lenses when I don’t need it. No point in IS when you’re at higher shutter speeds which I often am. For video I’d agree, rare artifacts don’t outweigh the obvious advantages there.
I’m sorry I did not. Basically everything would be the same however. With Jpeg you just have to be mindful of your WB and I’d probably go with low noise reduction setting (can always add more in the computer). I generally shoot in the standard or faithful (or neutral?) picture profile when shooting jpeg. On standard I bring the contrast setting down a little bit
@@BrettCarlsen I asked for this because I shoot jpeg and I am getting noise at ISO 3200, f2.8 (f1.8 lens) shutter 1250? What menu setting will help eliminate noise at these settings? I should not be getting noise?
Ah gotcha. Well some noise will happen with any camera at those speeds. But you’d be looking for noise reduction (high iso NR) in the first menus. If you go too high you could lose detail etc. but test and find the sweet spot
@@BrettCarlsen At those speeds then my 5D3 is a better camera. It was set on standard, so maybe I will try low at the next BB game and see what that does. My post NR program makes the face look plastic. Thx
You have to have the newest version of lightroom or photoshop available with the creative cloud subscription. Also Canon’s DPP software (I think that’s the name) which you can download from Canon’s website will open them.
Nice and helpful but it seems that you where in a hurry it was a real fast talking instruktion. Im an swedish older man so the english dont have to be so fast but I get it after 2 times. Great instruktion anyway. Thanks.
Apologies. I try really hard to speak more slowly when making videos, however I still am probably speaking pretty fast. RUclips does allow you to change the playback speed on videos (lower right corner, gear icon) and maybe that would help? Thank you!
Looks like a fantastic camera can't wait to get it. Too bad it is made in the "unreal" world, where we do not me measure distance with human part (feet). i am joking :)

That`s very useful .We measure in feet in the UK too .... at least us oldies still do :)
anti-flicker is not a JPEG setting. If you shoot either indoors or outdoors with arena lighting that filckers at 75hz.
I just got my R6 and I'm having issues setting up my continuous shooting. I didn't see where that was covered.
Thanks for the great tips. FYI, Exposure Simulation is best left off when shooting strobes in a studio since the camera will have much smaller apertures in most cases than typical "fill flash" scenarios.
That makes sense! Good reason to turn it off for sure!!
Hi Brett! I rewatched your video and found the back button focus option I was looking for! Thanks for great info!
I’d look on Canon website in your country (Canon USA would be mine)
I’d be surprised if the in body stabilization affects the lenses. The in body setting may be turning your lens IS on and off. No noise on other canon cameras?
If u have IS on the lens it will first use that before the ibis on the camera.
Tesla!!!!!! Watched it through and through! Keep making amazing content. Also happy teachers day to you. Learnt a lot from you, so thank you 😊
Thanks so much! Happy to hear stuff is helping people learn. Makes it a lot more fun and exciting to record these things.
This guy's as much a professional photographer as Putin is a humanitarian.
Thank you for the constructive comment
will you make a similar video for the Canon R5?
They are pretty similar but I should do that
Extremely helpful - thank you!
"Signs, signs
Everywhere there's signs

Can't you read the sign?"

Thank you so much!!
tesla
Great video! Thank you very much! Very helpful. 👍
So welcome!!
Does most of this guide apply to the R5 as well? Thanks.
Yes! A lot of it overlaps. Maybe some differences here and there but most of them fit!
Thanks man that was helpful. Hope you get your Tesla (Chris)
Really grateful it helped out! Happy to answer any questions if you have any. I don’t own the 6 but the 5 is similar (did an AF settings video for that which translates)
2023 who loves this camera
Please compare the r6 to the 1dxiii as they have same sensor and processor so wouldn’t the r6 be like a cheaper way to get sports shooting on a budget ?
It totally would! I don’t believe it’s the exact same sensor. The mark III sensor is very good and a bit higher resolution. The mark III is definitely superior but if you’re learning the R6 is totally capable. I think it’s the best student photography camera I’ve ever seen
Tesla! ha! Looove your videos! Thank you!!
Great video. Thank you!
Very welcome’
Display 1 is power saving mode 60Hz. Display 2 is 120Hz refresh rate.
Awesome! That makes sense.
Display 1 is useful for shooting stills all day, Display 2 is for shooting video.
I just subscribed to your channel today so you may already have one, but You should do a what’s in your gear bag video, there aren’t a ton of photojournalists on RUclips and it would be pretty cool to see what’s in a photojournalists camera bag.
That would be a great idea! I’m pretty sparse on content on here so I absolutely love suggestions.
Tesla :)
I was wondering about back button focusing- is it better? many people swear by it.
sorry found it.
No worries! It’s subjective. I’ve used it my whole career. Switched in college and couldn’t understand why people used it. But I found it to be much better quite quickly. I have an R5 AF setup video that can be used with the R6 and it is a good back button setup to try
Informative vid. Tesla!
Great video... good in-site into all the settings. Hope to get my Tesla soon!!
Thanks so much! Glad it was helpful
I have lens on mine and the lens cap on, and it still tells me that message
Yeah. Did some digging and seems that currently there is no way to disable it.
@@BrettCarlsen dang that sucks. I appreciate the effort!
It’s for a good reason as you can melt your sensor I’m told haha. But like I said prefer. I like to be able to turn off messages like that too.
just picked up my new Canon R 6 on 06/09/20, Video shoot better than Mark 3,
So yesterday was the first day using the R6 and going from a Mrk III- I hate that viewfinder, I'm so bummed out this morning.
I’ve actually had surprisingly good luck using it with flare/into light sources. But all cameras struggle with that.
15:59 “so you can focus the right way” 😂😂😂
😂😂 glad someone caught it
Small VF screen is designed for those who wear glasses and can’t get close enough to the viewfinder to see the entire frame.
Ahhh. That makes sense!
very helpful
So welcome! Glad you found both videos!
Tesla! Video was very helpful thanks !
You are so welcome!! Glad it was helpful!
Great video man. Thanks! Best of luck on the Tesla!
Thanks so much. Glad it helped out!
Nice overview. Thanks.
Glad it helped!
I think the R6 is the sleeper of the bunch....
Brett Carlsen Tesla.. lol..... what do I win?!?!
Absolutely nothing haha. Someday I’ll have sponsors 😂
Is there any reason not to leave flicker on?
I’m not entirely sure. I’d imagine it could possibly shift your timing on when it fires? Maybe. I’ve never used it really so unsure how it accomplishes controlling flicker. Historically if you were to do it manually you slow down or shift your shutter speed to be “in sync” with the flicker
Great video!
Thank you!!
TESLAAAAA
Tesla... Loved the video!
Thank you so much! Hope it was helpful
Just got my R6 and thanks for overview- we all need a darn Tesla!
Right? I need that plaid hyperdrive mode haha
@@BrettCarlsen that one is winning so hard, ha.
I’ll grab mine and check what I can set.
Liked the summary a lot, but boy, you don't half whizz through things and also flip between the options without us having a chance to read the accompanying help text?
Is there a reason my Canon R6 has way fewer options on the settings menu than yours?
Hmm. I can’t think of any but possibly it’s in video mode or maybe being in program or something similar limits the menu?
Only big shift I’ve seen is when being in video vs photo mode and then heading to settings.
Tesla! Great video - thanks!
Thank you so much!! Hope you love the camera
You should use the Electronic Front-Curtain Shutter to avoid the vibration of the mechanical shutter,,,,, so I recommend to you use this mode better than the mechanical one.

Tesla! Good stuff...just found and subscribed.
Thanks so much! Very open to suggestions on what to make next
Tesla! Hope you get your Tesla soon. You deserve it!
Thanks! I think I need about 100x more subscribers. But that’s the dream right? Haha
Helpful but you glossed over some of the very important things especially customising buttons. Particularly trying to set up back button focus.
Very sorry. You are right. I actually did a separate video about back button AF for the R5/R6 that goes deeply into the topic. Hopefully that helps!
Tesla, thanks very much :) v helpful
So welcome!
At 6:09 you say you turn of the IS? Really? IBIS is one the major new features of the R6/R5. Keep in on bro -- always.
I keep it off unless I need it. I agree but I also turn it off on lenses when I don’t need it. No point in IS when you’re at higher shutter speeds which I often am. For video I’d agree, rare artifacts don’t outweigh the obvious advantages there.
TESLAAAAAAA!!!
I shoot JPEG, so did you do one of these for JPEG users? Thx
Thx
Tesla! Thank you!
Great content as usual!
I've just turned my screen off by mistake, does anyone know how to get it back please as I've now lost my menu.
Read the "Screen/Viewfinder Display" section in the downloadable advanced user guide (page 729 in the current version).
We watch till the end, Tesla! 😂
Hahaha awesome!! Very appreciated!
Daddy Brett
I have an older iMac and I can't open my raw photos.. can anyone help me figure this out please?
You have to have the newest version of lightroom or photoshop available with the creative cloud subscription. Also Canon’s DPP software (I think that’s the name) which you can download from Canon’s website will open them.
@@BrettCarlsen Thank you very much! I got them open.
Yay! Very welcome!
Thank you!
Good luck on getting that Tesla 🤞
Thank you!
thanks - Tesla
Tesla!!
Thanks so much!!

Looks like a fantastic camera can't wait to get it. Too bad it is made in the "unreal" world, where we do not me measure distance with human part (feet). i am joking :)
