Castle theme in this game is one of the best mario songs. They did not have to go that hard for a mario game. And I'll tell ya. Mario and Luigi was awesome. Fighting for stars with a sibling or someone else is just incredible.
I'll always like this game for bringing back 2D Mario. Between Mario Land 2 and this there were the You Vs Boo levels in SMB Deluxe (kind of, meant for racing through) and the e-reader levels in Super Mario Advance 4, which nobody got to play at the time due to the ridiculous way that Nintendo released them. It's also the first Mario game that I got anywhere around its original release, rather than a port of an older one to Gameboy Color or Gameboy Advance. It's the first 2D mainline game to use 3D models for Mario and enemies, which were first used in Mario Vs Donkey Kong two years previously. I agree that it does look a bit generic, though this hasn't been helped by its sequels using the same artstyle. It worlks well enough for what it is in this game though. As you said a one off would have been fine. The mega mushroom is a bit of a gimmick. The super mushroom in Super Mario 64 DS did the same thing, so I guess they repurposed its mechanic for the mega mushroom here. There's also Challenge Mode, which is accessed by pressing L,R,L,R,X,X,Y,Y on the world map screen in a completed game (worlds 4 and 7 may need to be beaten). With this enabled the screen can't scroll backwards, like SMB1, Lost Levels and Super Mario Land. So I guess that adds some challenge, but I'm not sure how much in practice.
it's so weird seeing NSMBW graphics but the levels being the size of SMB levels 3:37 that's also what it is in MKW, a star but just a teeny tiny bit different
I’d say Mario Land 2 is the most overlooked despite it being part of NSO; it’s never really talked about unlike the 1st Mario Land which is praised for being the first handheld Mario game; And NSMB is praised for being a return to 2D Mario. All the praise Mario Land 2 gets is for introducing Wario, that’s about it.
@@WarioEnthusiast i see a ton of praise for NSMB, at least from the videos i watch and people i talk to. It’s believed it’s the most unique of the New Super entries and even stands out as one of the greats in the Mario franchise. Although i see arguably more praise for NSMB Wii because of the multiplayer.

@@nonsensenimrod NSMB isn't praised really, it's just looked at as slightly better than the other "New" games.
