- The New Super Mario Bros. series was once a faithful, yet innovative return to 2D Mario. However, with each new entry in the series, the formula became very stale. But what caused this? Let's discuss this in today's video!

It’s kind of ironic how the series went from new to NEW like Scott once said it’s new milk but it’s also expired

Even though U Delux was just a cash grab, the super crown power up broke the internet to the point of increasing Nintendo's actions value when Bowsette was made by the fans, this was one of the best accidents Nintendo ever made.
U deluxe was not a cash grab. it added challenge mode, which has 30+ challenges as well as coin rush and coin battles and i didnt even mention luigi U where they revamped every single star coin. well worth the money
@@definitelynotchairyeah still not worth it at all
@@definitelynotchair Only worth it if you didn't get the original, I'd say.
@@GeorgeDCowley yes basically
@definitelynotchair U deluxe was 100% a cash grab. Only notable thing was toadette, everything else was just... there. No reason to buy it if you already have the original, especially since it has no online. Only worth it if you didn't have the original and this was BEFORE wonder came out. Now that wonder is out there's no point
It’s a crime you didn’t talk about the final boss in the Wii section
It’s not really that impressive though, aside from dramatic music and the whole bowser lava thing. It’s pretty easy to beat.
@@maroonedjacktar1501For me it’s not; I haven’t even beat the game 🥲
Little fact: Apparently, NSMB2 was supposed to be a sequel to the DS game, which is why it plays similarly, has the Mega Mushroom, and is called 2 despite being the third game.
Isn't that kinda obvious
@@mbii7667 yeah. I have never understood why people get confused about this game having the number 2 instead of 3 since it obviously means that it is the second one on the ds
@@haroeneissa790 exactly
When i was younger i didn't know about the existence of the ds new super mario bros so when i saw the commercial for nsmb2 i thought it was a sequel to the wii game
@@mbii7667Get off your high horse
As a guy who had grown up with nsmbw, i say that every nsmb game is fine on it's own because let's be honest they are far from being horrible or bad at all, all of them are still fun to pickup and play , it's like they're the comfort 2D mario games whom don't offer to much originality and they're not meant to be super ambitious but still decent enough to play at least to myself
Yeah. not bad, but they all feel the same in a good way.
Like you said, it's pretty much a "con" ppl that love Mario games can live with, but also if you only ever play 1 you don't miss out on much
@@SplendidNinja true
@Ademhadji653 I would say more so towards DS & Wii cause they were acceptable. Afterwards, they become the samey game with no ambitious.
@@jaretco6423 very true, but my point still holds the newer ones just lack originality that's it other than that they still have content like coin rush, missions.....etc
I’m sorry you grew up on them
Funfact: level 1-1 is the best level to get a mega mushroom in your pockect by simply letting the shroom walk towards the bricks. Once under the bricks, pick the shroom as close to them and voilà, the shroom will go to your pocket since you don't have the space to grow
So you can now use the mega mushroom anywhere you want. It's super OP against Bowser jr and it's fun to use it on the final boss
Wouldn't you Break these bricks while growing ?
@@tarekcat1 nope. The game thinks that you're still small so the bricks don't break.
However, you don't have the space to grow. To not waste the power, it goes to your pocket and remain small
It never occurred to me you could naturally put a mega mushroom in your inventory outside the houses. Wow!
I can understand why Nintendo capitalized on this series. When NSMB DS was released, it was a reboot of the 2D Mario series that everybody didn’t know they needed. It had high rocket sales and the fans just can’t get enough because again, it’s easy to play and it’s FUN. People didn’t really get tired of it even until NSMBU deluxe, you’ll see a decline in sales but still it was selling 10s of millions of copies. That’s the power of MARIO
It’s kinda surreal knowing New Super Mario Bros. U was my first ever platformer and yet many consider it to be the most underwhelming.
It’s kind of just Wii, but HD didn’t do a lot really and also the fact that they tried to make the world map like super Mario world with dinosaur land by combining every single average Mario world into one which is so weird.
@@LAQL31I can understand that. U at its core really is just an alternative version of Wii.
U deluxe was mine 💀
I think DS was my first but U is the one I mainly remember as a kid.
2 was my first Mario platformer and not even nostalgia bias will the save that game from me
It sucks because I WANT more 2d Mario platformers. Wonder is great. Mario vs Donkey Kong is great.
But the concept is exhausted and I’m sure everyone except me is done with it.
Like the 3d platformers are all different and beloved. Sm64, sunshine, galaxy, 3d world and wonder. Why can’t we have that variation with 2d games?
The first three Mario nes games were beloved because they were all different and weren’t afraid to take new ground. Super mushrooms, fire flowers, turnips, throwing, tanuki leaf.
People who dunk on the New Super mario games dont know the joy of hunting your friends as soon as a level starts, executing them and stealing the glory of completing the level alone, or the humiliating dispair as you plead for them to pop your bubble after you were caught lacking
New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a tough game. Old school tough. So you better bring your butt-stomping A-game, as this will test even the most seasoned platforming veterans.
Some of the World 9 levels, yeah. Other parts of the game: not so much.
Yeah no just some world 9 levels all the levels are so spaced out and empty for 4 players so when you play by yourself it becomes apparent
No it is not.
@@Neo-Metal17 yuh it is
@@levi7126 No this game is not "Old school hard" it's not even "new school hard" it's easy-medium.
While the "new" series went downhill in sales and demand, I find the games in the series mostly improved as it went on. My favorites from the series was the Wii U one as well as Luigi U. I can understand those who say that the games got stale really quick, and I mostly agree...mostly with the graphics and world themes...but if you look at each one objectively, together and apart, it's easy to see how they got better as they went on. I am happy they ended though when they did.
I agree with everything you said here, except for the very last thing. I'm disappointed with Wonder. It's not a bad game, but it's not really challenging.
@@TheRealNintendoKid ok, but Wonder isn't part of the "new" Mario series.
The original NSMB was a return to 2D Mario while adding elements such as Wall Jumps, Triple Jumps, and Ground Pound in the levels.
NSMBW added new power ups, secrets, multiplayer, and more levels.
NSMB2 added.... coins.
NSMBU added.... the same aspects as the Wii version except HD.
NSMBU added the connected world map the acorn suit (which is the best power up in the nsmb series right behind the mega mushroom blue shell and propeller musheoom) and luigi u which is the best nsmb game right behind ds and it had agruably more enjoyable levels and you didn't need multiplayer to have fun and challenge and boost rush mode. And it had a slight change in the plot where instead of peach getting kidnapped the castle gets taken over. You just never played U so you just assume that its just the same as wii. But nsmb2 is underrated but still the most unoriginal and it also had only 4 original soundtracks so yeah it's obviously the worst out of the nsmb games.
@Milesishere484 Never played it!?!?! Buddy, if RUclips can manage to add images to this text, I could easily show you I've played NSMBU AND NSLU.
And yes, connected worlds was clever but the levels weren't all that memorable. It was New Super Mario Bros again for the 4th time and it already got stale. I'll give NSLU a pass because the levels were difficult which made it fun to play through. But don't ever assume I never played a Mario game. Especially NSMBU.
@@captainseg got it but yeah i was just tryna show that it was more then an hd reskin of wii but yeah i agree with it not being that memorable and yeah it was getting kinda stale so you have a point.
@Milesishere484 Actually, Super Mario World started the worlds being connected. As well as Land 2: Six Golden Coins where you can also tackle any worlds you want. So yeah. That doesn't count.
@@jaretco6423ik that.
This was a really fun video to watch. The "New Super Mario Bros" Series has a very special place in my heart. The first game in the series I played was New Super Mario Bros Wii and it was also one of the first video games I ever played. Ever since I played "NSMB Wii", I played every other game in the series. After playing through them all, in the end, my favorite game in the series is a tie between New Super Mario Bros Wii and New Super Mario Bros 2. The nostalgia and memories of these games hit me like a brick. I still play the games in the series and love them all to this very day... I wish this series comes back one day...
This video made my entire day, and it was overall an extremely well done video!!
Keep up the good work SF!!! 👍
I'm rooting for you!
The hate that New Super Mario Bros. gets is similar to the hate that Illumination, Teen Titans Go and modern Family Guy gets. It's not so much the "you are the worst piece of media I have ever seen" type of hate, but more the "you can do better than that, but you chose the bare minimum and the general public rewards you for it" type of hate.
The reason these games get the bad reputation that they have is more on the fact that they are barely indistinguishable from each other and just lack a sense of identity to get you to revisit them. They're predictable, but they're "safe" since they're just regular 2D Mario games so everyone knows what to expect from them. By the time the Switch came around it would have been expected to get a proper "new" 2D Mario, but instead we got a watered-down port of NSMBU with barely anything changed, making that the final nail to this sub-series' coffin.
Compare this to SMB3, World, 64, Galaxy, Odyssey and even Wonder which are considered fan favourites, and that's in large part to how they actually feel unique from other Mario games, had unpredictability within their gameplay giving large replay value and don't feel like soulless cash grabs. Those games felt like they were made as passion projects by a team of developers who had big imaginations and not some corporate mandate that took the phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" to heart.
AS SOMEONE WHO GREW UP WITH NSMB 1 AND 2 I MISS THIS SEIRIES
New Super Mario Bros. 2 is my favorite game in the NSMB game, I don’t know why. Maybe because I find the collecting coins gimmick to be really fun
I don't know what it is, but I've always loved all of the games... No matter how much they reused, each game had something that made me want to go back to it. I honestly dont know what those things are, though... (Except Luigi U, I love the challenge)
All I really hate personally is going between the handheld and console games because I keep thinking i have the spin jump which results in having to replace my 3DS's top screen
New Super Mario Bros. U was NOT pointless, the whole point of it was to make sure more people had access to it because the Wii U didn’t sell very well.
Do you mean Deluxe?
@@GeorgeDCowley I do mean Deluxe.
It's quite expensive for something they wanted more people to have access to, though
@@h8GW It goes on sale a fair amount of times with other first party games.
You said the spin jump was removed for NSMB2 because it was only in the Wii version to solve a problem that wasn't there anymore and that you'd talk about it later, but I don't remember you bringing it up again
I was alluding to the fact that the level design is more compact in NSMB2, thus there was no need for it because there's less empty space to cover. Sorry for the confusion lol
THANK YOU for listing the themes you used I recognized them but didn’t fully know which one it was, hate when RUclipsrs don’t do that
Wonder is still absolutely a NSMB game. It just has more "new" things, ironically.
Fans: What inspired you to make a handheld New Super Mario Bros. game around the same time as the console one?
Nintendo: Money!
Ironic thing is that the Handheld one was mostly about collecting money
New Super Mario Bros Wii was the very first Game I've ever played it's what began my love for Video Games still to this day I love NSMB Wii and I'll play it whenever I get a chance.
Actually, you can still play as both yellow and blue toad in multiplayer, i tried it, you just need someone to select blue toad first.
just tried this and it didnt work
@@SFproductions1 I could have sworn it worked, the fact that you can't play as both simultaneously when the original version let you is really stupid
So this is what u were workin on for so long

2:00 Nice music sync!
So I wasn't the only one who picked up on it, neat!
I feel like the Ice Flower in NSMBW was added to tie in with Super Mario Galaxy, having it as a fairly recognizable item that players who had yet to play 2D Mario could twig alongside the Fire Flower. It definitely has the feel of a late add-in, but I could be totally wrong.
I've played trough every NSMB game and I have to say: not many game series can use the same level themes, same music, same enemues and get away with it. Solid platformers in their own right but some of the most soulless sequels I've ever played.
As much I kinda love this series, letting it go and making creative 2D Mario games again was the smartest choice on Nintendo's part.
They are ALL creative and they are ALL great games. Every single one, even the ones you hate.
@benmalsky9834 No. Not all of them. New Super Mario Bros games aren't bad. But there not that great. DS gets an pass cause it was " new ". But the ones afterwards aren't that special nor great.
44:39 "because of the removed features I wouldn't be surprised if someone said they preferred the original game over this one."
Hey that's me! 🗿
2 confuses me with one design decision. The goal is to get so many coins, but getting 100 still gives you an extra life. And there are 1 up houses. I mean really? Who is that devoid of lives that they need to go to a 1up house in 2?
there is no downfall bc that series is still good
While some may have less then stellar feelings for these games overall these games are fantastic to me personally and to my friends and family. Also a little laughable that while some may say these games are getting stale and repetitive it's a little more then laughable as these games have sold a ton of copies as fans have been there for these games when released. I still remember when buying my copy of New Super Mario Bros.U for the Wii U and the person in front of me was complaining about the game being just another clone of the past game. I commented back to the person "If it's a clone game you're tired of then why are you buying the game too as the person had a a copy in their hand and the cashier was ringing them up" said person quickly shut up after that.
Still think that Mario U slaps only because of that Van Gogh level.
Well, at least New Super Mario Bros didn't pull a Sonic 4 where it attempted to "go back to the classics" and then force a game out on an incomplete/lacking game engine where the first episode was so bad that it ended after only 2 episodes.
Side Note: It would be awesome if there was a game where Sonic and Mario team up together against Eggman and Bowser or some new enemy. It could be called "Super Mario and Sonic: [Include catching subtitle here]". Not the Olympic games.
2:01 love how the jumping syncs with the bahs
I had the first game back when I was using an Action Replay on my DS. I loved having the blue shell power up always in my pocket. I can't believe it only appears in 1
Was this private and now public because for me it says 1 min ago but there are comments 1 day ago
yes it was available for members first
@@SFproductions1 oh ok
The wii and wiiu (deluxe) is my two personal favorite but is so sad that the helicopter suit barley makes it into wiiu as a secret power up but super mario maker 1 and two has that so i could fly my butt of
The ice flower was added because you can only get the penguins suit in certain levels and certain worlds, the ice flower you can get in any world at any time
There is major significant in regards to Super Mario Land 2 being the last original 2d Mario game for 14 years.
Listen I love this series mostly due to the fact I grew up with it and they were my first platformers, but I am so glad we moved on. Wonder is an amazing game, and i seriously hope that 2d mario keeps re-inventing itself as it did for the first time in almost two to three decades
I actually have every game in this series (except the remaster) and I like all of them. Such a shame my Mario U + Luigi U disc doesn’t work for some reason, it’s not even scratched.
I love the OG new Super Mario bros game so many memories
“Daring today aren’t we?”
The mini mushroom is in wii 10:36
This was a great video. New Super Mario Bros use to be so good but over the years they have fell.
I wouldn't say fell but rather it became stale.
They are ALL good!
42:54 "Only Toadette can use that!" WHY'D YOU GIVE IT TO ME THEN? IM LUIGI!!
FACTS
I do hope after Mario Wonder every 2D Mario game will have a lot creativity Wonder was just perfect if you ask me sure the bosses kinda suck but the game had high highs for me to ignore
Agreed.
It's worth noting that the Mario Bros. Advance series (which were remakes) on the GBA introduced 00s kids to 2D platform games and helped spark the demand for the NSMB series.
New super Mario bros is stale but mario wonder is a huge breath of fresh air
New super mario bros for the ds: the tiny mushroom allowed mario to run on water which isnt mentioned and the blue shell could protect mario against the drills in bowsers kingdom. It was basically a super star that lasted forever
your friend laughing at the star coin placement literally made my day
You know, I thought you were gonna make a video about just how new super Mario Bros DS is more original than literally every other game, but this is still a nice video to recap on it.
fun fact, the mushroom houses aren’t luck, they all have rotational patters they use so you can learn them and get every powerful in each house.
23:06 Well, actually, there is a mountain theme, but it's combined with the cloud theme in World 5.
I honestly don’t understand the hatred for the New Super Mario Bros. games online. These games are targeted towards a modern generation of Mario fans and game players, and are designed with casual gamers in mind. On top of that, not everyone owns every Nintendo system, so I respect the decision to make a new game with every new system. These games are fundamentally very good, as with every Mario game really. Also, I STRONGLY disagree with the notion that NSMBU Deluxe is some sort of “cash grab”, its main purpose was to allow people who didn’t own the Wii U (it’s user base was very small compared to the Switch) to experience the game. It paid off to as it’s considered a must-have Switch game. I think that it’s only the saltiness of people who dislike these games, everyone else can appreciate them for being quintessential Mario.
I love new super Mario bros
3:19 I could've sworn that Super Mario World was the one that introduced the Secret Exits that unlock alternate routes on the world map? Like, isn't there a whole jungle area that relies on you using this mechanic to find your way out?
You're probably right I should've researched more 😭
Yeah, the game even tracks how many exits you got.(which inspired a long hunt to obtain all unused exists through glitches, which is conceptually hilarious. I love the videogame community sometimes)
The food level names In New Soup U aren't new at all btw. Straight outta Kirby.
Wow , now this is a big video , you definitely deserve a break after this work !
Hope you enjoyed it!
NSMBWii is by far the greatest 2D mario game untill wonder came out.
Smb3 smb world nsmb ds nslu smb2 are better then nsmbw in almost every single way.
I consider Wonder as a reboot to the New series
Mario DS is the best one and I will not hear otherwise (im nostalgia blind)
Agreed.
Well your def not as nostalgia blind as the people who think wii is the best in the series.
Bro...did we have the same childhood? I mean shoot I called the propeller mushroom a helicopter and of course NSMBWII is my personal favorite due to nostalgia bias like what?
Yoooo
I kinda remember there being a pattern with the panel minigame in wii and 9 out of 10 times we would get all the power ups
The download play was fire like Mario cart DS
When I played New Super Luigi U with my family, my dad absolutely loved Nabbit
36:56 The Year of Luigi also included Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, featuring Luigi’s dreams of multitude and magnitude.
It never fell, they just change styles every "generation" of Mario games. We had the Classical Super Mario generation (1 to World) then New Super (DS to Deluxe), 3D (Land and World) and now we have whatever the Wonder generation will be. I'm not expecting 4 to 5 exact games but more likely just a couple in a new, unique painter's style as it's currently a trend to make new games out of old things. I call these generations because they're all groupable that way.
I wanna see the downfall of New Super Mario Bros. But each time he says new it gets faster.
I will say the final boss in nsmb wii was great.
True
@@SFproductions1 no screw that, it was awesome!!!
I been playing mario since the original ATARI days and since the original NES game. It wasn't my first video game I ever played BUT it was the first game that made me BEG MY PARENTS TO BUY THE NES... before Super Mario Bros, games were just very very casual to me and I never felt the need to own a console. After Mario 64, I lost interest in the Mario series. My last Mario game was the 3DS (the 3d platform and Mario maker series)game... I thought it was a great game honestly but the best Mario ever was SM3 and M64.
4:25 IIRC you can actually stop by letting go of the dash button and pressing the direction opposite to the one you were shell dashing towards. Yeah, you need to account for having room to brake, but it’s possible
great vid bro! i watched the whole way through and it was very entertaining so props to u :D have u ever thought of making videos on the mario and luigi rpgs? i would love to see a video on that
Thanks for the idea!
In NewSuperMarioBrosWii, I completed the game with more than 999 full deaths. Somehow... IDK how I ended up having that issue.
Loved your opinions and take on the franchise. I haven’t really played any 2D Mario games since NSMBU all those years ago and haven’t kept up with the franchise since then, but your video and explanations made it super enjoyable to watch and restored many nostalgic memories I had, having played most of these games as a young kid. I would really love to see a video on you talking about SPMB Wonder, as I don’t know much about the game and just would love to hear your opinions on it 😊
Thanks! I definitely want to make a video on Mario Wonder one day
17:33 agreed the jr fights in nsmbw are GOATED
I remember in high-school or even intermediate school we had mini tournaments for mario vs luigi, good old days
I saw a review of the game that came after the new soup series a couple days ago, and suffice to say it makes this video look like a Stephen Spielberg movie, because while there are some ideas there, there were a lot of things wrong with it. I'm of course talking about Super Mario Bros. Wonder which I'm happy we got, because it laid the groundwork for a new era of 2D Mario that I'm excited for, for once. But the road to get to that point was something of a journey of disconnect between Nintendo and their hardcore audience who're now old and can beat these games blindfolded.
So if I had to personally rank each of the New Soup games, it would go New Super Mario Bros. U/Deluxe, New Super Mario Bros. 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. DS, and New Super Luigi. U respectively.
While I admit Super Mario Bros. Wonder is conflicting in a lot of areas, it's not a bad game like some older Mario fans are gaslighting newer fans into believing, because Wonder has something going for it besides pretty animation and a new location, and that something is variety in level types. And I don't just mean the Wonder Flower either. It's kinda like going from looking at a Spruce Tree, to a Christmas Tree.
I'd still go play the Newer Soup games by the Newer Team, because fans are better at making games than even the most talented staff at Nintendo sometimes.
Man, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is so nostalgic for me. My family played it all the time when I was a kid
The mega mushroom was made to one hit bowser in the final level of the game 😁
NSMB DS was my first Mario game and this game is absolutely amazing! But I find it really weird how Nintendo kept making NSMB instead of making a new one, it's been too many years but at least we finally got SMBW
Nabbit is super op
That hidden star coin is hilarious
You can only say "Welcome back to (nostalgic thing)" so many times in a short period of time before it gets stale.
Don't forget that the Super Crown power-up gave the idea for fans to create Bowsette! The fans also made Super Crown versions of enemies too.
i just feel like mario maker turned the nsmb games useless, there is so much more to do in mario maker
First things first. I want to make some correction.
. The whole open world connection started with Super Mario World. They also have alternative exits and if done correctly, you can make it to the final world in less than an hour. Not kidding. Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins kinda has this too, but you can tackle any worlds you want. So yeah. Still nothing we haven't seen before.
. Again. Super Mario World names the world after food. Have been there.
. Actually and you might've heard if this. But Super Mario World does this before. Yoshi debut in that game and he is an power-up in that game. You can take him to any levels ( aside from Ghost & Castle levels ) and there's also different colors of Yoshi to access abilities like Red for shooting 3 fireballs, Blue for flying and Yellow for shockwave.
. The last time we saw the Koopalings before they came back in NSMBWii for being more popular again is Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
. The World 9 trope is similar to Star & Special Worlds in Super Mario World.
Basically New Super Mario Bros. U tries to be like Super Mario World of the NSMB series in terms of it's structure and layout. But failed miserably to what made Super Mario World so great and special to begin with. Same with New Super Mario Bros. Wii being like Super Mario Bros. 3. They just don't get what made the retro games so good.
I'm super happy Wonder got rid of the New Super Mario Bros. syndrome and hopefully the next 2D Mario game does the same with being original and creative, while still having the Mario formulaic we've come to known.
Hey SF,do you know about sonic speed simulator and make a video of the history I would love it!
1:59 the jumping synched with the music
New super Mario bros 2 is my guilty pleasure I’ll admit it
I've never played any of these games before so this vid was really helpful in explaining the differences between them!
i want the other titles to be ported to the Switch in the engine that U and U Deluxe use. Would be cool to have them all on one system in HD.
11:50 It's strange you started with the Penguin suit.
25:35 It also led to a shield for mini mushroom levels.
42:40 That's unfortunate.
Bowser's the final boss of every game, and you don't complain about that.
because all of the bowser bosses are completely different from one another
@@SFproductions1 That's fair, actually. The two I've played start the same, but they do diverge quite quickly.
The modding community for nsmbwii is insane and it makes me love the game so much more, I hope it never dies. It's funny because I learned how to install riivolution on the wii with your tutorial over four years ago, so, I have no one to thank for being able to play nsmbwii mods but you, SF.
Even though super Mario bros wonder is the start of a new 2d Mario, I still want them to go back to the previous formula but make some changes. I wouldn’t mind if we get dlc for nsmbu deluxe, nsmb 3, or a nsm world game. I seriously want them to do that. Maybe if they release a new super Mario all stars containing the original, Wii version, and 3ds version, they could include never before released games.
In my deluxe the penguin suit and propeller mushroom can be obtained before you beat the game and their worth getting also blue baby Yoshi's ability is reused in wonder
