This movie always stood out to me because of how real it feels, maybe if you don't surf or skate lots of the stuff seems a little cliché but IMO all of the characters and the dialogue feel super genuine.
I remember my mom taking me to see this movie when it came out in the theaters. She was laughing louder than anyone else there 😂. At the time I had never seen a movie like it before. I was so amazed how they used an MTV reality tv show format and turned it into a kids movie. That’s what made me love it so much.

It just feels like work of love and that shows in every frame. I cannot express enough how much i love this movie.
Going through a lot last year, and this video about surfs up (& the movie itself) really resonated with me. It seems so simple- just have fun. But growing up, so much turns into needing to be perfect, working hard, no pain no gain. So thank you for this video with the simple reminder to also take a break, and that what matters the most is just being yourself and enjoying the journey. I needed to be reminded of that. :)
my ex partner had never seen surfs up either, and after i showed it to them it became one of their favorite animated movies 😂❤ it just hits so hard and is timeless
I am SO GLAD to see Surfs Up, I loved that a lot of the surfers were played by actual surfers so a lot of their dialogue when they talk about it is so genuine. This movie's got a lot of character and love in it it really is a love letter to surfing.
I love this movie, in Brasil the Dub is FENOMENAL, they even translated some of the names of characters to match their feel to the Portuguese language which made it so amazing. The jokes were also adapted and were sooooo gooooood
The Brazilian dub is incredible too. they did an amazing job adapting soooo much of the dialogue to fit our experiences and mannerisms. Like calling Cody's "city" "Frio de Janeiro" (a pun with Rio's capital, Frio meaning Cold)
the little message at the end of the video nearly made me tear up tbh, it’s nice to be reminded that you don’t constantly need to feel like you have to gain something/ be something when it comes to doing what you love
This is one of my favourite movies from childhood. So many great scenes, great music. 10/10 movie. Also Tank is actually so hilarious. you really have to love him for being so unapologetically unhinged.
The soundtrack slaps and I love this movie so much. Shia lebouf (sorry if I spelt that wrong) did a great job voice acting. Aloha from Hawaii! I love these movies reviews! I hope he does some on studio ghibli!
I've been struggling for a few months, and your speech at 13:20 actually brought me to tears. I have to stop taking things so seriously and try to have more fun, thank you
With how they filmed it using motion tracking, I wonder if the original 3d environment files are still around?! Imagine if they're able to make it a movie you could be part of in VR! propably next to impossible but would be so cool if were actually able to move around in the environment while watching the movie! Awesome video man!
Full disclosure I was Head of Animation at Sony when we made this. It was a real labor of love and I guess it shows. FYI the motion tracking camera rig was leveraged off of our work on "The Polar Express". Never heard the claim from the 2019 Lion King movie, but that's the Hollywood publicity machine at work. I'll leave you with what John Lasseter told me personally, that this was one of the best animated films he had ever seen.
Wow! First of all, thank you and your crew for this amazing film! I love this film! Plus it’s my father’s favorite film! May I ask what would you say was one of the toughest shots in the film to animate?
To this day, this is my favorite animated movie of all time. When I was a kid, I watched it every day in the summer time, and my dad would watch it with me a lot. It made me want to learn how to surf, which I still haven't learned but do plan to. It's such a feel good film to me, one of my comfort watches, and whenever things get stressful, my dad tells me to take it easy and be like Chicken Joe.
This type of video is what youtube has been missing or rather lost, in my opinion. So well composed, with an idea and a wholesome conclusion at the end. This is actually a masterpiece, which can help almost everyone with whatever project/dream they want to achieve. Thank you very much!
We need more animated mockumentaries tbh! Total Drama Island went on for as long as it did (is doing???) for a reason, even if it has become an utter shell of its former self.
Surf’s Up is one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies. I love how it has that documentary theme to it and has the camera man being there with the characters.
Surf's Up has been my all-time favorite animated movie since I first saw it when I was a kid. I have to watch it at least once a year, no other movie raises my spirits like this one
A very nostalgic movie for me, it was the first time I've been to a cinema. My parents somehow got tickets to a pre-premiere screening - and somewhere in the middle the projector malfunctioned and the tape started going backwards. We had to wait like half an hour for this to get fixed but man, was it memorable!
I only watched this movie once as a kid, and I remember finding it boring for some reason, but the scene when Big Z teaches Cody to be patient with making the surf board stuck with me for life. Definitely going to give it a rewatch now that I'm older!
I just discovered your channel, but I have to say, I didn’t know how I needed those words. I’ve seen that movie a bunch of times, but never came it to my mind that I could take that lesson of the movie and reflect it to my own life. You re right, every time I did something and didn’t care how it would turn out, because I had fun in the project itself, I was happy. I must try this more often. Thank you
I wasn't expecting such a heartfelt message to come from you in this video (about Surf's Up, of all things), but I really needed to hear it. Thank you.
I can't wait to watch this movie again after all the info I learned in this video. I watched it with my older boys when they were kids and I plan to watch it with my youngest when he's a little older. I love animated movies, they're honestly better than many live action ones these days.
Man pig I love this movie but I love your commentary. I really needed to hear this. I fell out of my art years ago due to comparing myself to other artists online. Thanks for the kind words man.
What an awesome breakdown of one of my favorite childhood movies, I didn't really know how to break down why I liked it but all of your points make me realize and appreciate more what this movie was about, thanks man and great video
I really loved your breakdown on enjoying the process. It was a healthy reminder for me to enjoy my small time here in this cosmos. To experience my reality and to appreciate others and what makes their stars shine. 11/10 wholesome pig

It was and still is my favorite animated movie. I’m terrified of water, and yet this movie makes me feel a love and passion for surfing despite never having done it. It makes me want to try surfing.
Damn, i kinda needed this video. I've been a perfectionist since my early childhood and I tend to take things super seriously. Its only till now at the age of 24 that I'm open to doing goofy content and enjoy just putting it out regardless of the view count. But it is still something i struggle with, especially socially. I forget how good Surf's Up actually was.
Hard agree. Im honestly livid how little credit this film gets. First mockumentary I ever saw in this style and its incredible. Everything about how it was made and presented is fantastic
surfs up is a underrated gem. I had the dvd as a kid, me and my sisters would always watch it. it so funny and has wholesome moments, one of my favorite movie of all time.
Goddd I loved this movie so much as a kid. Hearing about it now really hits the nostalgia I have for it. And honestly, I need a rewatch because I'm sure ll enjoy it more as an adult that better understands the artfulness and messages you're talking about.
Surfs up is one of my favorite movies and sound tracks. Actually, I'm pretty sure this soundtrack was the foundation for my whole music taste. The happy, chill, surfer pop-punk vibes are the best.
I enjoyed this movie a lot as a kid when I was a kid I never understood the camera thing until I got older but I really love the lessons in this movie I also enjoyed how real the character felt like the way they talked felt so real and I loved that even the CGI still holds up but overall loved this film.
Nice!✨️ I watched it when I was 7 and it was really fun. I also thought the documentary style added to its charm. And the soundtrack, especially this song 'Like the ocean beats the moon to take the tides away, all we need is a little time to chase the blues away...'(not sure of the lyrics)✨️ The surf song, it was so calming and refreshing.
I watched this movie non-stop as a kid! It always resonated with me massively! The vibes are just so overwhelmingly optimistic and having the dude himself as a washed up retired surf god? Um yes please
Watching this makes me respect this movie more. I always enjoyed it, but I thought it was okay at best. Now that I know that it was heavily improvised, the effort that went into making it feel natural, and the respect to the sport shown, I feel this movie is actually a really good experience. Time to add this to my rewatch list
Hey B.P, love your channel and all your reviews on them but I was wondering if you could take a look at Mune: Guardian Of The Moon. (The animation was ahead of it's time tbh) It's a 2014 movie that went heavily overlooked and almost forgotten and I wanna see my childhood movie get the beautiful respect it deserves! And I would love to see my favorite RUclipsr review it! With all love and respect 💕💕💕💞💕💕💕💕 This was one if these movies that just made me unbelievably happy as a child. Glad to see you review on it. 😂❣️
I kind of love the timing of this video and the message of enjoying the process. I am changing industries for my work to something completely different that I love to do, but still have doubts whether I am failing by leaving the other industry, despite it being far too stressful for me. I am now even more sure of changing so thank you for this video, I already liked Surf’s up but now it has just that bit more meaning to me as well!
I absolutely love surfs up, even tho the sequel was just.. no(practically non-existent to me). This movie is one of my all-time favorite childhood movies. One of the reasons is it is just hilarious and well animated. Also, my favorite character when i was a kid was chicken joe, but in more recent years, it has changed to Z
This movie showed a love for surfing like no other, im not a surfer, i cant swim, im not even a big fan of surfing, i dont hate it i just dont really care for it!! But this movie makes you feel like you LOVE surfing and you love the waves and the water, its such a natural feeling movie and it makes you genuinely love the characters and their personalities. I damn near cried a few times, this movie is so good bro
This video came at a great time for me, I've been trying to write a book lately, and have been struggling a bit, worrying about it. I'm like a third of the way through and started feeling terrible about how it would turn out. Thanks for reminding me why I started at all.
Bro I love you. Your genuine, not over excited or algorithmic. You just make stuff you find interesting and like. I just want to make sure you know ALOT of people enjoy these type of vids to sit back a escape with for a sec. Much love
this video made me so happy because i love knowing what my favorite critics think of my favorite movies and the fact that you like it fills my soul, this movie is everything i love it so much
This movie is literally my childhood! I used to watch it on my PlayStation 2 so much that my playstation used to glitch out and open the movie menu with no sound, just a silent menu while the characters stared in your soul. The extras menu also used to have a bad surf board mini game where the middle surf board would be the only one Cody could use, and if you picked any color but yellow fall off and it didn't have dialogue it just the same ten minute loop of a stereotypical surf guitar riff. I am so happy this movie is getting the absolute love it deserves. It was so good, the animation and the mockumentary feel is a form of comedy I really love even now as an adult it's one of my favorite genre of movies and it HAS SUCH A GREAT STORY TO IT it's not just a hero learning a lesson! It was such a good message and really impacted but it was so ahead of its time it didn't get the love it deserved. Also GREEN DAY DID THE SOUND TRACK how could you NOT LOVE IT?
Growing up in the 2000s mostly, the tropes were mostly extreme sports, the mean high school girls, and the playstation 2, which everyone liked including me. This movie was very fun and I wondered how they took the time to make it like somebody was in the movie motion capturing the animation, which was cool.
Bro this was such a great vid. I’ve been struggling with finding my reason for playing volleyball too. I’ve been so obsessed with trying to prove that I can compete and that I can play at higher levels and trying to win. I lost sight of how much I loved the game in the first place. “You’re always at your best when you’re having fun.” Well said man.
this movie really is a gem and you can really feel the authenticity that this movie has that is so different to other movies - that's what i love most about it - it feels soo real and that makes it even more magical in a way, and it's also just such a great and relaxing time watching the movie :) i also love the Score of this by mychael danna - so beautiful melodies to it and as a whole how they animated some surf scenes and all is amazing and lets you feel like you are in the wave - and great talking about the message and how you opened up yourself about it, really cool - you can so easily forget to enjoy the ride and this movie has probably the best delivery of this message
So... just listened to this review today, and I haven't seen this movie since it was in theaters. Looking forward to seeing this movie again, and thank you for this review.
as a surfer it makes this movie so much better. like this movie was made by actual surfers and no joke even as a cartoon is in my top five surfing movies of all time.
I just watched this in class for the first time, and I enjoyed it a lot. I desperately researched about this movie after words and I am blown away with the fact that most of this was improvised and the camera system too is cool too. This movie is unique for 2007.
I really enjoy your videos, I seem to always come back to videos I’ve already watched to see if it’s getting the views it deserves. I hope things continue to grow and you continue to enjoy doing this.

So thank you for this video with the simple reminder to also take a break, and that what matters the most is just being yourself and enjoying the journey. I needed to be reminded of that. :)

"Into Yesterday" being my personal favorite track.
my ex partner had never seen surfs up either, and after i showed it to them it became one of their favorite animated movies 😂❤ it just hits so hard and is timeless
you dated a cowboy?
I love this movie not just for nostalgia its genuinely such a funny movie with such a good message
9:40 I haven't seen this movie in YEARS but that scene always stuck with me and made me chuckle. Even funnier now knowing it was all improv! 😂
FRÍO DE JANEIRO!!
Dude surf's up is a hidden gem. Cody's so relatable, the way they made it like a documentary, big z's return and don't get me started on the music! ❤

As a society we all need this to be a thing
Ikr! This would legit be a revolutionary vr game if was made!🥵🙂😅
Full disclosure I was Head of Animation at Sony when we made this.
Great work :)
Total Drama Island went on for as long as it did (is doing???) for a reason, even if it has become an utter shell of its former self.
update: the new seasons are pretty good and feel much more akin to earlier seasons. they did a good job at characterizing 2023 contestants.
@@pillowvibes yeh I heard that as well!
Thank you.
I love when Cody tells Chicken Joe they’re in the finals and Chicken Joe is just like excited about being able to surf more
I'm so glad you enjoyed this movie BionicPig! One of my childhood favorites!

Fun fact, here in Brasil this movie is really beloved, mostly because the dubbing is really good and funny. “Taca a mãe pra ver se quica”
Surfs Up was actually the very first movie I have ever seen. It holds a special place in my heart to this day.
The feeling I felt when I watched this for the first time as a kid.
Watching it again as an adult is sooooo good. Love chicken Joe
I freaking love this show, so underrated. The music alone is so nostalgic!
The message from 12:40 to 14:16 is so wonderful. I've been trying to describe this concept to my creative friends and family for years.
I needed this more than I thought. Thank you for the kind words. You make some of my favorite content.

I desperately needed this message I’m my life rn. Thank you bionic, for sharing this, and may your days be filled with joy as you keep doing what you were created to do ❤️ be yourself
One of my favourite childhood movies

I'm so glad i saw this movie in theaters and that I remembered it and loved it for so long
Surfs up is one of my favorite movies and sound tracks.

Keep doing what you’re doing Bionic. I love your videos. I don’t know what I’d do without them.
This will always be the superior animated penguin film, happy feet could never be this great
I have made penguins my personality because of that era and this movie is by far my favorite one. Live your life guys
this is actually my fav movie till today haha. absolutely in love with the docu style, the interviews somehow gave the movie such a realistic vibe.
With all love and respect 💕💕💕💞💕💕💕💕
This was one if these movies that just made me unbelievably happy as a child.

Also, my favorite character when i was a kid was chicken joe, but in more recent years, it has changed to Z
i refuse to accept surfs up 2 as canon. Its nothing to me

Your speech at the end about enjoying the process hit me very hard today. Thanks, Pig.
12:40 what a powerful message. Thank you. Really spoke to me
Growing up in the 2000s mostly, the tropes were mostly extreme sports, the mean high school girls, and the playstation 2, which everyone liked including me. This movie was very fun and I wondered how they took the time to make it like somebody was in the movie motion capturing the animation, which was cool.
I just watched it since it’s free on RUclips right now, and I gotta say, it was such a great movie with a good lesson to losen up and enjoy life
“Stepped on me? Stepped on me? That guy was dancing on me!”
Going through and analyzing the themes really made me cry, as a lot of it resonates looking at where I am now 😭❤
Thanks for an awesome video 🔥
So... just listened to this review today, and I haven't seen this movie since it was in theaters. Just listening to you talk about its message about chasing passions reminds me of why I got I loved programming in the first place. I've been at my first career programming job for 2 years now and haven't touched my projects at all. It's become a CHORE to code. Yesterday, I started doing C# tutorials again(My original language; my current job uses a proprietary language), and I've been reminded how much I love developing.
Looking forward to seeing this movie again, and thank you for this review.
I came across this video when I was taking life way too seriously. I needed this. Thanks man. You helped me more than you can know.
as a surfer it makes this movie so much better. like this movie was made by actual surfers and no joke even as a cartoon is in my top five surfing movies of all time.
I hope things continue to grow and you continue to enjoy doing this.
im glad pig decided to watch surfs up, i remember in his tier list video he said he had'nt seen it and i was so surprised by that. I knew it'd be the type of movie he'd like so im happy to see he made a vid on it. i didn't know they used that sorta camera technology in the movie, it rlly was ahead of its time.

Listening to you talk about this movie made me think about skateboarding the whole time lol. Their kinda similar while being totally different, but it's something i do that I really enjoy. Learning to skate was a long journey, but learning was so rewarding.
This has and always will be one of my most favorite movies of all time im so glad you actually covered it
