I love how the townsfolk did to the ancestors what the ancestors did to Agatha, I watched this movie when I was like 7 and never noticed any of this but what I did notice is how bad I felt for Agatha
"Our child is, from the looks of it, having some sort of mental issues that's causing him horrifying hallucinations. Lets scream at him, insult him, allow him to be bullied by the whole town, and regret his birth to his face. He's been right all along? I'm going to choose to ignore that." BECAUSE ANIMATED PARENTS. They're either good, or the absolute worst ever. Legit though, this movie made me cry. So good.
I think Coraline maybe had better animation, but Norman also had great animation, just maybe not as fantastical as Coraline. Coraline's story was kinda cliche and dull though. Kid dont like parents, kid find new people, realize new people = evil, defeat evil, go home and appreciate that parents are not literally trying to kill her anymore. I love that Norman is kinda based on witch trials, and it was mostly accurate to what happened in them. I love that they made it clear that although there are most likely powers out there we don't understand, that doesn't mean we need to fall into fear and superstition. I love love love the writing and storytelling, and I LOVE the characters. Only thing Coraline had going for me was, like I said, the animation. But the characters were not developed well and I didnt really care what happened to anyone, not even really Coraline. But every time someone in Norman got into a dangerous spot I'd be nervous. I also love how they made the big brother be very casually gay at the very end, AND HE WASN'T BURIED! He was a bit of a himbo but they gave him a real heart of gold. Everyone has an arc even if its small...I love it if you can't tell 😂
I can't believe paranormal is the first animated movie with an openly gay character. His line at the end of the movie has always been my favourite part lmao
this movie scared me as a child but now. i absolutely love it. I would always tear up when it gets to Agatha’s backstory. The fact that she was just a little girl having fun. Then to be taken away from her mother I’d just start tearing up. Yes she was a witch but didn’t deserve what happened, Neither did the actual women in the real witch trials
Agreed, and as a neurodivergent kid, it hit me even harder - she was just a little different, and she got punished for it... but then she lashed out against them, and that *also* was a mistake that wouldn't be rectified for centuries. There are so many stories that would have the blame solely rest on the judges, but I really love how Aggie did have blame too, it felt a lot more real. Still, she didn't deserve to be pulled from her family like that; as you said, she was just a little girl. Also, yeah, yikes, those real women who literally weren't witches and were just killed for nothing. I love me some Hocus Pocus, but the way they're portrayed just doesn't reflect the actual witch trials as much as I'd like. ParaNorman is a step up on that front for me.
“Mob mentality” represented by Zombies. People are quick to divide too. Norman’s speech couldn’t stop them which is representative of real life. A lot of times People only listen to “their kind/similar too” over the person they didn’t like/prejudice against. Idk this movie seems really good and I like the message. It has a lot of themes and the ultimate goal is shown well
The town never changed their mentality and attitude to different people. Their ancestors were cruel to Agatha and do the exact thing to Norman. If they still believed in hanging people for being witches or warlocks they’d have hung Norman too. Sad to say.
I mean, they even SAY it! At the town hall when the mob is going towards Norman and the zombies, someone yells that they should hang him and another person says they can't because "it's the 21st century"!
When I was younger I felt so weird about some of the jokes since they are more “ mature” , I quickly got over that being young, and started to really enjoy the jokes and now it’s definitely one of my favorite movies along with Coraline, and Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride . ❤️❤️
definitely known a few of those movies myself, it tends to balance the kid to adult catering ratio better down the middle, kinda like goofy and gritty combo maybe
i liked stop motion animations when i was a kid so my dad installed this movie on a torrent, i watched this, i kinda liked it. the pretty gross semi realistic faces, the animation, everything is just amazing. now im older, i actually get the moral of the story, how its delivered and it made me appreciate the film more than ever.
Me too man "clichés" like witch's curses, haunted Manson, or ancient forests just get me going. What's a good spooky piece of fiction you'd recommend for October?
ngl, I feel like stopmotion movies are kinda forgotten. Coraline and Fantastic Mr. Fox are loved by many, but not a lot of people talk about them. so it's a blessing to see a great youtuber talk about underrated stop motion films.
@@aleisinwndrlen7113 do you mean you haven't heard of Fantastic Mr. Fox? or do you mean people still talk about it a lot, and that my mentioning it was weird?
I'm not sure if this is just something I imagined, but the characters who can see ghosts (Norman, his uncle, Agatha) have faceted irises while everyone else have normal circular irises. Always thought that was cool.
The zombies that killed the poor girl, they get chase and shoot at by the townspeople. They now know how Agatha felt. The town became their legacy that they created. Now Norman lifted the curse and clear Agatha's name, she can finally rest in peace. The zombies can finally go to the afterlife, but they will have to answer for what they have done.
@@AH-is5yg didn't they already answer for it by getting hunted by the townspeople? they suffered as they made their victim suffer, possibly worse because it was in a corrupted version of their own home
The message of paranorman was so important for me as a kid, I was an un-diagnosed autistic girl who didn’t know why she was so different. I felt just like Agatha, and what Norman said to her at the end really changed my outlook on life and how I thought of other people.
When the days are cold And the cards all fold And the saints we see Are all made of gold When your dreams all fail And the ones we hail Are the worst of all And the blood's run stale I wanna hide the truth I wanna shelter you But with the beast inside There's nowhere we can hide No matter what we breed We still are made of greed This is my kingdom come This is my cooooooooooooooooooooooome
I love this movie, and it probably is the first kids' movie to feature a gay character, and not just vaguely hint at it, by him mentioning his boyfriend.
You missed the best part of all: At the end of the movie, when Norman's older sister is talking to Chug's older brother and she asks him out to a movie and he replies, "That sounds great Kathy, you know, you're going to love my boyfriend!" and she grows so disappointed lmao
Pararnorman is my favourite move of all time. I personally love the reveal of Mitch being gay It couldn’t be more perfect Also appreciate that he directly states that he has a bf. i also love that it not only points out the reality of how you are treated in school because of being fat our having disability's physical and mental but also about how family react to it in different ways. I also love the vast amounts of hidden humour.
it's the fact I was sobbing and crying before the movie began and we had to leave the theater because of it- a few years later I watched it and I still laugh at how I was sobbing for this beautiful movie
I always thought the moral was more "Don't close yourself up even if you've been hurt before. You gotta let people in. Or else you'll become more alone a hateful" I think Norman was on his way to become like Aggy if it wasn't for Neil !
@@amorfm4071 No no ! She IS justify ! But she had such a big hatred towards the world that she forgot there was poeple who loved her. That's what I mean !
Honestly, I have a pretty big gripe with this movie. I really don’t like how no one, save his sister, apologies to him. Especially his father, he was just mean spirited. And asking if the grandma was sitting in the chair in the end wasn’t enough for me, it was not an “I’m sorry for the things I said and how I treated you.” That said, I think it did have a good premise, and I really do love the animation style. I like listening to other people’s takes to get different perspectives. :)
@@Wonderoddity True, but therein lies the problem, I think. The fact that a parent isn't expected to apologize to their child when they are in the wrong is not okay.
@@WaywardAce420 of course it's not okay. the movie doesn't say it's okay, but it is a reality for many families. I wouldn't hold that against this movie because the point of the movie wasn't 'parents need to be better for their kids' it was 'people kind of suck and make ignorant choices out of fear and also dodge responsibility' and the parents never apologising fits that point, just like how the mob all try to justify themselves at the end.
Fun fact: the movie was adapted from a book and it's exactly the same. I remember when they both came out, I was in 8th grade and had just finished the book when they said the movie was coming out. Exciting stuff.
LAIKA Productions doesn’t get enough praise tbh. When we wanted inclusivity, they GAVE us inclusivity. One of my favorite studios of all time. No cap, everything they touch is gold.
I don’t even think inclusivity was in such a high demand when this movie was produced as it is now. I think they genuinely just did it bc they said “why not”. And they did it in probably the best way, it was a natural thing, Abd the joke wasn’t necessarily that he was gay, but the sister was the one being laughed at
Also many churches knew that witches didn't exist yet used this as a way to scare people into confessing, they understood how ignorant the people where.
8:33 as someone who grew up with parents like these, it makes me feel really good to hear other people who are also parents call out stuff like this, even if it's just in an animated movie. Happy for your kid ❤️
Dude, I can't get over the fact that after the town is saved, dude shuts down Norman's sister advances as soon as he said that he had a boyfriend. Funniest shit ever
It’s funny asf too bc he never actually realised she’s flirting with him, and he brought up his boyfriend so casually. I also like how it wasn’t pandering as Neil never brought it up either
Paranorman was one of my favourite movies as a kid, I remember going and renting it out at blockbusters on Halloween as a kid and getting back from trick or treating and putting this on, good times man you unlocked a memory there!
3:33 anyone else noticed how grandma (in the movie) said her feet are cold which is in my opinion is trying to indicate/foreshadow that she’s dead that whole time? idk if that makes sense but yeah i’ve been thinking about this one
If you want more atmospheric/spooky animation, I really recommend the cartoon network miniseries Over the Garden Wall. It's amazing and Christopher Lloyd plays a crazy woodsman.
Mitch's end line always gets me lol "My boyfriend's a total chick flick nut!" Pretty cool how they had an open, *non* offensively portrayed gay character all the way back in 2012 (where homophobic jokes were pretty common, they could've easily taken that route if they wanted to)
This movie traumatized me when I first watched it, it only fueled my paralyzing fear of the undead. Luckily, I've grown out of that fear since then and can really enjoy the atmosphere in the movie.
I remember laughing out loud when Niel’s brother talks about his boyfriend while my parents were like: “Le Gasp! A gay character in a children’s movie? Think of the children!” And all I could think was like “wait, you think having a Jock be so oblivious to the point of stupidity of not noticing someone flirting with him would have been better than someone who is actually not interested and thus paid no attention to the flirting?
I can't believe you skipped over the part where the dad turn to the side on the couch and says "Hi, mom". That was the funniest shit in the entire movie to me
I love this movie. There’s soo many parts that just have me laughing or chuckling at the humor but the end where Norman confronts the witch also gets me tearing up. It doesn’t pander to the audience and regardless of whether you’re young or older there’s something to enjoy.
I honestly don't even remember anyone being gay in this movie. Was too enraptured with the overall storyline, I guess. It definitely had a good story and subtle hints and mysteries, like Coraline. Another favorite of mine.
At the end of the movie the sister (who was hitting on him the ENTIRE FILM) suggests they see a movie together. He says it sounds great and he bets his boyfriend would love that. So technically him being gray is litterally just a punchline of *these two will never date

I know everyone loves Coraline, but I love Paranorman more. I still love Coraline, but this one is so great and underrated.
I know, right?
Likewise, Paranorman definitely deserves tons more love from the fandom!
Same, I always hear about Coraline, but hardly anyone speaks of this movie
Yes me too! I adore Coraline, but Paranorman has so much heart, I love it so much.

this movie scared me as a child but now. i absolutely love it.
I would always tear up when it gets to Agatha’s backstory. The fact that she was just a little girl having fun.
Then to be taken away from her mother I’d just start tearing up. Yes she was a witch but didn’t deserve what happened,
Neither did the actual women in the real witch trials
It has a lot of themes and the ultimate goal is shown well
WOOO GOT A LIKE FROM BPIG 😩🙏🏽🙏🏽been subbed for years and following on insta, gonna celebrate this one
The town never changed their mentality and attitude to different people. Their ancestors were cruel to Agatha and do the exact thing to Norman. If they still believed in hanging people for being witches or warlocks they’d have hung Norman too. Sad to say.

When I was younger I felt so weird about some of the jokes since they are more “ mature” , I quickly got over that being young, and started to really enjoy the jokes and now it’s definitely one of my favorite movies along with Coraline, and Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride . ❤️❤️

i liked stop motion animations when i was a kid so my dad installed this movie on a torrent, i watched this, i kinda liked it. the pretty gross semi realistic faces, the animation, everything is just amazing. now im older, i actually get the moral of the story, how its delivered and it made me appreciate the film more than ever.

I always thought the moral was more "Don't close yourself up even if you've been hurt before. You gotta let people in. Or else you'll become more alone a hateful" I think Norman was on his way to become like Aggy if it wasn't for Neil !
Tbf tho, Aggy was literally murdered. I think she’s justified with the curse.

The fact that he never gets an apology honestly seems more realistic to me. People hate admitting when they’re wrong, especially parents.
@@Wonderoddity True, but therein lies the problem, I think. The fact that a parent isn't expected to apologize to their child when they are in the wrong is not okay.

@@WaywardAce420 Nah parents are human too. They should apologize on occasion.
