One of the things I find most fascinating about this movie is how, even though Rango basically bullshited his cowboy persona from the start he fully becomes it even before meeting Rattlesnake Jake and crossing the road, which fits the theme of our deeds making us who we are rather than what they say about us.
Rango is legit my favourite movie, it has a compelling main character, beautiful animation, western (which I very much like), a story about self discovery and redemption, hilarious humour, and a kind of over the top feeling that I just love. Truly a masterpiece
I definitely remembered the plot details about Rango's freaky dream, about the water shortage, about Beans's weird tic of freezing in place at seemingly random, about Rattlesnake Jake, about urbanizing the town, about the random Mariachi Owls, even before watching this movie.
I re-watch Rango every couple years. It still holds absurdly well today and looks better than most animated films you see. The amount of passion, care and attention for detail in this movie is mesmerizing. From the crew actually acting the scenes, stellar voice cast, from the research on the creatures, on top of those very heavily detailed designs. Rango came out during the boom of "CGI talking animals kids films" but it really stood out for the gritty character designs and more adult themes. It won a bunch of accolades, and well deservedly so.
something that you didn't catch about Rango's Spirit of The West: He was voiced by Timothy Olyphant, who played Sheriff Bullock in the 2004 Western TV show Deadwood. The spirit of the west was Clint Eastwood, an iconic old western actor, and he was voiced by a famous modern western actor.
Two things I just realized: he's a chameleon, and them changing color is his way of not knowing who he is at first and then blending in and forming a persona. Second, he says as long as the sign is up, we got hope, and the sign is shot up, but it's still barely hanging... and they did win at the end! Color me amazed.
Rattlesnake jake is the most memorable villain for me as a kid I just saw him as this unbeatable threat and I wasn't even scared of him just angry that he was so powerful compared to everyone else and it seemed as if he couldn't be beaten
I saw this movie in the drive in when it came out and I never really got it. Now as an adult who has become a fan of spaghetti westerns this movie makes total sense now. It’s a stylized homage to the spaghetti western but also has the awesome little detail that Rango (Jack Sparrow) faces off against Rattlesnake Jake (Davy Jones). Was a real treat hearing Depp and Nighy working together again. On top of that Hans Zimmer is a die hard fan of Ennio Moriccone. So it’s cool hearing Zimmer score a western. I mean, Zimmer uses the Two Mules for Sister Sara theme in Game of Shadows and Man with a Harmonica in Worlds End. Man obviously is a fan.
Correction at 9:57, while Rango does make up the whole being brothers with rattlesnake jake he in fact isn't making stuff up about the spirit of the west. You may remember that the Armadillo gave a detailed description of the SotW to Rango earlier in the movie which to Rango brushed off as them being delusional and in the camp scene Rango then basically recites everything the armadillo said word for word.
I was hoping you'd say something about the religious ceremonial dance they did when they went to get their water. That was one of the best parts. I'm so glad that so many people love this movie!
This movie made me feel seen as an Arizonan, even though they’re in Nevada. The depiction of how brutal living in the desert can be is 10000% accurate. Plus seeing all the of desert life I remember learning about in school at the time made it an even cooler watch
I remember rewatching the movie with the knowledge that it was made by Gore Verbinski, creator of the first 3 pirates films (which I loved) and the Lone Ranger 2013 (which I also loved). I will say, that definitely helped my liking of the film. I liked the film on its own, too, but it also worked as a Gore Verbinski action-adventure.
“Westerns are pretty much a dead medium” maybe at the time this came out but since then we’ve had Magnificent 7, Hateful 8 and Django. All westerns. All bangers.
The height of the era of the Westerns is long, long gone, yes. But the concept of the Western is still very much alive. As long as stories are being told, Westerns will exist.
my dad had this movie downloaded into our family iPad and i’ve watched so many times. it has become my favorite movie ever and even though i didn’t understand a huge chunk of it when i was younger, its message still shine through. i think it’s really important to not “baby-fy” content for children. just cuz something is catered to kids doesn’t mean it shouldn’t have meaningful themes, unconventional visuals, and a storyline that adults can appreciate too. 20/10 amazing and horrendously underrated movie *chef’s kiss* i can go on for days about this movie but i’ll spare everyone the hassle
I rewatched Rango for like the 100th time a few days ago and I'm so happy to see more appreciation to this amazing movie, in a way this even redefined the Western Genre, while most Westerns are about self-redemption this is more about self-identity, and I totally didn't steal that point from another RUclipsr I forgot the name of

I really love the one character that would say super lucid things, but just never really connect it to anything/or just have no one acknowledge what he said
This was my son's favorite movie when he was like 4. It is a great movie. And like you said about the humor, made it very easy for me to enjoy this "children's" movie.
I played a Rango game for the X-Box 360 when I was little, in the game you were playing through make believe stories that Rango made up, like a stolen water train, going through the badlands taking down the Jenkins Brothers, there was even a stealth level where you sneak around a human trailer. Really underated game, have seen no mention of it online, it and the movie pretty much defined a big part of my childhood.
That scene where he crosses to the other side just gets me in my gut every time. The fact that he finds his old “friends” and realizes that he’s nobody anymore, the visuals of him walking across the road, and the background music just mixes together for a scene that gets me everytime. This movie is truly a one of a kind masterpiece
I remember I went to go see this with my dad when it came out, and my dad grew up with all the old cowboy movies his dad loved, and I remember when credits rolled my dad just looked down at me and said "That might be the best animated movie ever made." and ya know what? I have to agree.
I loved this movie as a kid and now I love even more all grown up. Like damn, the visuals look like their from now and the writing isn't too bad. Fucking ahead of its time is what it was.

Rattlesnake jake is the most memorable villain for me as a kid I just saw him as this unbeatable threat and I wasn't even scared of him just angry that he was so powerful compared to everyone else and it seemed as if he couldn't be beaten
I love this movie and wish it got more support
The antagonists are some of the best ones I’ve ever seen and the soundtrack is just…the best
I love a Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones reunion
Rango is my comfort movie I’m so happy you’ve made this!
its one of my comfort movies too!! when i was like 16 i watched it every single day for weeks :,) still watch it pretty often
This is my favorite movie. Even after watching Spider-Verse 1000 times, Rango is still my favorite movie.
I remember seeing this as a kid, and being shocked by how good it was.
Watched it in cinemas aged 10 didn't think much of it , got blazed last year and watched it again , wow , a masterpiece
Rango is the single handedly best animated children's western movie on the face of the planet
You've reminded me I lost my Rango DVD and I'm still mad about it
I know the feeling one I lost my Mario and Luigi partners in time cartridge
@@pixnclix8619 the funnier thing is i finally found the disc. It was in the family Van's DVD player..
Bro, idk why, but I have replayed pig playing the guitar at the start of the episode over and over again. I just can't help myself to listen to it.
it's cool how they make the characters look so unappealing yet they are all an amazing work of art.
Idk man, if I were a chameleon I would fuck Rango
I still don't understand how it's not more popular.
This movie is incredible
More movies need to be made the way Rango was.
Rattlesnake Jake is one of the coolest characters. A badass design topped off with Bill Nighy giving his character life with his iconic voice.
Magnificent 7 was dope! I loved when Chris Pratts character lit that dynamite with his cigarette
Even recently, we have The Harder They Fall. Absolute banger.
Still waiting for the “Innocent 9”.
The height of the era of the Westerns is long, long gone, yes. But the concept of the Western is still very much alive. As long as stories are being told, Westerns will exist.
The fact this movie is 10+ years old and the CG animation looks just as good as the current one truly is something.
THANK YOU LORD PIG FOR BLESSING MY FEED, easily one of my favorite animated movies
I hate when “kids” movies don’t realize they can have jokes for adults without making adult jokes, if you catch my drift
my dad had this movie downloaded into our family iPad and i’ve watched so many times. it has become my favorite movie ever and even though i didn’t understand a huge chunk of it when i was younger, its message still shine through. i think it’s really important to not “baby-fy” content for children. just cuz something is catered to kids doesn’t mean it shouldn’t have meaningful themes, unconventional visuals, and a storyline that adults can appreciate too. 20/10 amazing and horrendously underrated movie *chef’s kiss* i can go on for days about this movie but i’ll spare everyone the hassle
👍🏻
As a kid, I really liked this movie, but now that I’m older, I love this movie
I saw this movie at the theater when I was 16 and I immediately knew I was in for something special.
It blows me away how good this film is and no one ever talks about it
what i love about this movie is the audio design- it is intense, unique, and so so cool
I rewatched Rango for like the 100th time a few days ago and I'm so happy to see more appreciation to this amazing movie, in a way this even redefined the Western Genre, while most Westerns are about self-redemption this is more about self-identity, and I totally didn't steal that point from another RUclipsr I forgot the name of
that's a case of "the thing"-phenomenon.
movie is forgotten, shortly after its release, but remembered as a cult-classic, years after.
When i was little I refused to watch this bc I thought it was boring. But then i was stuck on an hour long field trip and this is the only dvd they had on the coach bus. Changed my whole perspective on it. 10/10 would erase my memory to watch again.
When I was younger I loved every moment of Rango I loved all western details I loved how rango became the sherif and is trying to live up to the name. It was awesome.
I USE TO FEAR THE WALKING CACTUS TREE THINGS AND THOUGHT I'D HAVE TO DEAL WITH THEM IN MY EVERYDAY LIFE
This is one of my dad and I’s favorite movies and we talk about it often. A well written sequel would be epic!
No one understands how much I love this movie. Thank you for making this video, honestly.
Whenever someone mentions Rango I always bring up how it's criminally underrated!
I really love the one character that would say super lucid things, but just never really connect it to anything/or just have no one acknowledge what he said
This was my son's favorite movie when he was like 4. It is a great movie. And like you said about the humor, made it very easy for me to enjoy this "children's" movie.
And nice guitar skills.
Rango is an amazing movie, me and my cousin we’re literally talking about it a week ago reminiscing on seeing it in the cinema as kids.
A classic
I played a Rango game for the X-Box 360 when I was little, in the game you were playing through make believe stories that Rango made up, like a stolen water train, going through the badlands taking down the Jenkins Brothers, there was even a stealth level where you sneak around a human trailer. Really underated game, have seen no mention of it online, it and the movie pretty much defined a big part of my childhood.
I need to go back and watch this since I saw it pretty young and all I remember is snake minigun
"Finally, some good lizard action" - Bionic Pig 2021
Rango is what sparked my interests for fantasy westerns, which is something that is just like, such an amazing concept
It’s becoming a classic for me I’ve watched it too many times
I’ve never seen it at all lol
I remember I went to go see this with my dad when it came out, and my dad grew up with all the old cowboy movies his dad loved, and I remember when credits rolled my dad just looked down at me and said "That might be the best animated movie ever made." and ya know what? I have to agree.
I loved this movie as a kid and now I love even more all grown up. Like damn, the visuals look like their from now and the writing isn't too bad. Fucking ahead of its time is what it was.
rango is one of those deep movies u can sit and reflect upon after years of its release. its like a retrospective experience
Lmao "high school over nobody cares about u anymore" had me in my feeling🥺🙌😂
Hands down one of if not the best of Johnny Depp character acting. Dude even IRL acted out scenes to know how his character would feel. Dedication like that shows in the end product.
Call me crazy, but If I ever have a son, i want to name him Rango. That’s how much I love this movie. 🤠😂
Cool name nevertheless
This past Sunday I invited a friend over SPECIFICALLY to watch Rango with him. And it turned into a whole thing, because all my family loves this movie, so my brother and his wife and my parents came too just to watch Rango.
@@Mikeab503 it really is!
@@SoloJona that sounds amazing! It’s definitely a movie where the whole family can come together and just have a good laugh and some action too! I never get bored with this movie :) ima have to introduce this movie to my bestie
I know if I have a son I want to name him James so I can call him Jimbo
I love that rattle snake Jake has a tiny moustache
Can I just say your hair looks absolutely fabulous? Long and silky, with the complimenting blue, it's really pretty!
If you zoned out - I’d cop a sniff like Rango did with Beans’ hair
