They revisit the theme of the “one bullet” a dozen times throughout the movie and it wraps up so beautifully when Rattlesnake Jake sees the bullet floating in the water and realizes Rango truly is a legend.
Earlier in the film when Rattlesnake Jake is calling out Rango as a wannabe and a phony, Jake puts his face right into Rango's gun and taunts him to shoot - Rango cant. Upon which, Jake exclaims, "You got killer in your eyes son? I don't see it." When Rango comes back after having his epiphany, Jake is once again staring into Rango's gun. Rango states, "It only takes one bullet." "You ain't got the nerve" replies Jake. "Try me." Jake saw killer in those eyes.

What I also love about specifically Rango’s character is that despite how strange and ridiculous he is, there are many moments before his encounter with the spirit of the west where he proves he is a hero already. He was putting pieces together of the water mystery as well as the idea of following the pipes or putting out the torches to find the exit. His own self doubt and fear held him back but when it came to it, he was smart and truly came to respect the townspeople and really want to help them. I think that’s part of what sells the final encounter with rattle snake jake; he already had it in him, he just had to realize it’s not about him or how people viewed him, it’s about what needed to be done like you said.
What if i told you his whole story was simply him coming to term with his longing for a more eventful life before he dies? This movie is soooo layered its insane, a superb allegory Crossing the road to get where life is sweet after a whole life of fights... ain't that paradise?
Rango will always be a comfort film. As a person who is constantly struggling to find their own identity, Rango is such a relatable and fun character. "Who am I? I can be anyone." will always stick with me.

@@UnorthodoxIndividual I mean, that's how the internet works. If you look at the actual origin of most memes you will see that they gain popularity long after they're made. "Oh shit, here we go again" for example is from GTA San Andreas, a 2004 game. This is pretty much the same.
Something that always got me, even as a kid, was the differing scales of the characters. Some animals depicted would be way larger than the others, but in the story are actually very small. For example, the wild boar blacksmith is the same size as all the other townsfolk, including a spider and a tortoise. Boars get pretty friggin big! But then there are characters who are truly massive, and they all tend to play critical parts in the story. The Armadillo, the Hawk, and Rattlesnake Jake. I wonder if there’s some symbolism to that.
that and some props were small (like their guns) while others were human scale (like the town clock being a pocket watch). It was odd but honestly I think the film is begging to be watched on shrooms or something.
Perhaps its the impact they had on Rango's story? Rattlesnake Jake and the Hawk were his most influential obstacles, while the Armadillo and even the Spirit of the West were his most influential guides. This is only the first thing that comes to mind. It could also be that they wanted the Hawk and Jake to be frighteningly bigger than Rango.
This movie is meta af Think about it, the premise is that of a lizard in an aquarium being transported trough life Plastic wife, fake skies, mundane day to day so much so he invents himself a life He is longing for something more to happen, for his glass bubbles to shatter (the truman show) As he wished it, it happens Is it in his mind or a true event? And heres where it gets me hard: Is it simply another one of his plays or did it really happens and it is about him coming to terms with all his fears, flaws, hopes and regrets? So i'd say that some things are important like time, foes, the fact he said he killed them brothers with one bullet but yet he defeated Jake with one too, but without even firing it There is so much The paradise at the end when he finaly crossed that road An allegory for paradise or finaly being free after having bountiful things kept away from him since birth? He is the working class stuck in the american dream who got transformed from fighting for his ideals, finding a community and helping it in adversity, etc... I have so many point of views on this movie and its why i find it fascinating In the end i read it as a classic: just be yourself and live the life you aspire to /don't lie to yourself and wait for the glass to break
@@enriquesaenz3574 I think the hawk represents something that Jake (symbolizing Death) even fears. Perhaps some kind of higher power akin to an angel or demigod.
I love the fear rattlesnake jake has towards eagles. It makes him feel more like a person or(snake) and gives him more personality rather than a stone cold, fearless villain.
Plus the fact that in addition to playing along Rango's fake identity at first to break it, he got caught off guard when he came back to the town a different man yet in a sense lived up to the very legend he lied himself as, and of course after that, humbly gave Rango his respects before leaving the town himself. "I tip my hat to you, one legend to another"
When rango said “Believe in that sign, for as it hangs, there is hope...” the sign got shot down by rattlesnake jake and even after that, it was still hanging. Lots of hidden messages in this movie is what I enjoy the most

Knowing Nickelodeons pre-Spongebob shows it makes a lot of sense. Edit: (With that I ment anything made by Klasky Csupo, Inc.) The woman in the movie has facial similarities with the main girl in "Rocket power".
I enjoyed Cars 1 the most. Cars 2 was just alright but I feel like it was out of place like a spin off more than anything. Cars 3 just straight up sucked.
I'm so happy that this masterpiece won Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. One of the greatest decisions made by The Academy especially in the animation category
I was surprised to see this is a Nickelodian movie. The designs have this interesting hyperrealistic animated style that I find incredibly impressive. It's like Happy Feet and Owls of Gatoohie levels of impressive. I think even more so actually
The combination of Gore Verbinski, Billy Nighy, Johnny Depp, and Hans Zimmer is unbeatable. Just ask the first three Pirates of the Carribean movies, directed by Gore Verbinski, scored by Hans Zimmer, and starring Johnny Depp and Bill Nighy.
I wonder how the Pirates crew got the idea of making an animated movie. Like one of them would say “hey I’m bored, let’s compete with Pixar and Dreamworks”, and made up straight masterpiece lol
Rango is one of the ugliest talking animal movies I've ever seen, and that's part of what makes it so great. The designs really do feel dry, dusty, and gritty, just like the desert and westerns, and Rango clearly stands out from the others with his bright, clean design. As a kid this made the movie feel boring to me but now I see it as charming genius.
IKR SAME when I was a kid I was used to the bright colored animal talking movies so I got bored of it but I realized how better it is in comparison now
I love how Rango and Jake both tipped their hats to eachother signifying “mutual respect.” Probably came to this party late, but I found this movie on Netflix just yesterday in 2021 and enjoyed it immensely. Edit: Wow, thank you for the likes! I tip my hat to all of you friends.
The Netflix Rango (as well as the one that channels like Fox present) is a version that actually misses some scenes that where originally included in the theater version of the movie, such as the final scene where everyone is swimming in a new lake created by the explosive water fountains in the town (where the cropped version of the movie ends) and later has rango riding a roadrunner in the sunset while "lecturing" the audience... that's why i love my Rango DVD which is the actual movie with all its scenes (extended version)🗿 (As you might have already noticed Rango is my favorite movie 😂)
This came out during Pixar's worst year and Dreamworks' best year, so it's even more amazing to see an underdog like this nab all the big awards, including the Oscar.

My dad has never been a fan of animated movies. However, he really loved Rango. The fact that there was an animated movie that my dad enjoyed intrigued me so much and made me appreciate how good it is.
Yeah it's really nice there's no tedious scene where everyone is like 'you LIED to us!! Mean!" @@lucidzed5608 same age but while I understood the story, the symbolism in the movie that I reencountered in this vid, I didn't understand at the time. On my second viewing at an older age I was able to spot. The idea is Rango isn't just a shitty dime a dozen animated movie, but stands out with deeper meanings and a different graphical style. A more mature animated movie that was sold for kids
Not to mention, like you brought up with the owl turning his head around, or Rango not being able to camouflage, the film uses the fact that it's characters are animals in unique ways that add to who the characters are and what role they are able to play in the story. Sometimes in anthropomorphic animal films these days, the narrative forgets that it's dealing with animals and writes all the characters like they are humans. To the point where you could replace the animal cast with a human cast and still have the same story (case and point, "Sing"). Don't get me wrong, I love the movie Zootopia, and I found its narrative of using predator and prey to symbolize racial inequality, and foxes and rabbits to symbolize societal stereotypes, to be a really clever tactic for the film's thematic storytelling. I just wish that film gave us more scenes like the one where Judy is using her bunny athleticism to give out parking tickets. It's great when you can see the writers playing around with the idea of "how would this animal use their natural talents to solve this problem?" That same question about animal characteristics being used to shape the characters, their actions, and how they go through situations, is a big part of the movie Rango. Which is another reason why that movie is so great. I just wished more filmmakers utilized that same potention when writing for their "talking animal" movies.
I was around 10-12 yrs old when I saw this, and I swear I understood nothing. I was strong on English and it's my 2nd language, but I swear I understood nothing especially since there were no subtitles. Now I'm 20 and I perfectly understood everything. The lines, the references, the metaphors. It's amazing that Rango might be a kid's movie, but underneath the animation and cartoony appearance, I think that it's meant for young adults who search for their true identity.
I finally got around to watching it tonight and holy shit is it one of my favorite animated films. I love when filmmakers take FULL advantage of their setting like this
I watched this movie again recently best interaction in the whole movie "I think they thespians." "Thespians! That's illegal in seven states." The humour in this movie was something else
Basically, the blind mole thought he said "lesbian" which sounds like "thespian" and I'm not totally sure but I've seen other people say that homosexuality to some degree had not been legalized in seven states when the movie was released.
On the subject of brilliant cinematography: The lighting. The lighting was so good. Most CGI films glaze over lighting effects where, especially in the final scene, you can see the animators took their time ensuring that, with all the mist in the air, you could see the prismatic effects of the lighting. It is phenomenal.
"No man can walk out on his own story." This has got to be my favorite line in the whole movie. It's simple and yet conveys such a deeper meaning. God damn, I love this movie.

I noticed that you mentioned the unique look of the action scenes in this animated film. It's because it is unique. The reason the action looks so good is because industrial light and magic made this. It is their only feature length animation film. Normally they do special affects for major block busters.

I was already a big fan of Wolves of the Beyond when that movie came out, at that point I didn't even know about the series before Faolan. "No man can walk out on his own story." That's the line that hit me the most. Doubly so because it came from clint eastwood. In his classic role as the iconic cowboy Outlaw hero The man with no name. I like how when trying to camouflage Rango couldnt and only made himself brighter. Chameleons can't blend in, they only use their ability to attract mates.
I think the problem with most "talking animal" movies is that they don't use the genre in any way. Most of these movies can have every character replaced with humans and it won't make much of a difference. Zootopia wouldn't really work in its story or spectacle with humans. Rango would probably be the same in its story, but the use of animals gives some really interesting imagery with things like the pipe that Rango first takes shelter in, everyone lining up in front of the water pump, or all of the water being stored in bottles.
While I do agree to some extend, Zootopias story does work without the animal part. Sure, it's a huge part of the aesthetic, but that's visual...the story itself is essentially a fish out of water, racism and prejudice story if tweaked, can and I think has been told with humans before. Just replace feralism with some sort of drug induced rage and predators with some sort of racial analog and you are golden. Sort of the same with Rango. What story doesn't work would be things like animals of farthing wood, Plague Dogs, secret of NIHM or Felidae, as the characters being animals is a huge point of the plot in the first place.
Rango is a well done satire of traditional west movies, so it works because they didnt want to use talking animals just to be cute, but to change the dynamics and show another side of both genres
I’ve been saying for years that Rango is a cinematic masterpiece. It’s one of my favorite animated movies, and one of my favorite movies overall, and I always felt it was underappreciated.
I think most people are turned off at this because it's not really a film for kids. I watched this back when I'm still young and being stupid that I am I don't get what's happening most of the time. And the setting at first look is kinda bland, combined that with the dull look compared to other animated films which is full of color. But as I get older, I'm starting to appreciate it more. I won't go in detail on why because I'm not entirely sure but this film is getting good as the years passed. Maybe it's because we rarely see mature animated films anymore?
Has to be one of my favorite movies ever made. And it couldn't be done in live action either, the way the movie takes advantage of the animation medium is insanely creative
So uhm, random story, I used to have a Mcdonalds Rango toy and never knew the name of the movie, one day I found it again and would go to Google everyday for a month and search "chameleon with a shirt." I thought I would never find it, until now. It's been 13 years.
This movie shows clearly that there's a big difference between a cartoon movie made simply to give family audiences some laughs on a Friday night at the cinema and an animated feature that is made with immense care and love and talent, a movie that you find yourself going back to again and again to enjoy with family members or friends because of its quality and timelessness.
Definitely prefer the director's cut. Had one of the funniest eulogies for a dead person in cinema: "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to honor this man. Mr. Merrimack, you have the right to remain silent. Speak now or forever hold your peace. Amen."
@@LMAOuncleDEMO instead of it being a regular eulogy there are 3 lines that have nothing to do with a eulogy. "You have the right to remain silent" from the Miranda rights when being arrested. "Speak now or forever hold your peace"usually said by an officiant at a wedding. And lastly "Amen" which is mentioned at the end of a prayer. It's an insight on how "unknowledgable" Rango is.

When I saw this movie when I was younger I really enjoyed it actually. My friend did 2.
Rango will always be a comfort film. As a person who is constantly struggling to find their own identity, Rango is such a relatable and fun character. "Who am I? I can be anyone." will always stick with me.

Why is Rango coming back so much in 2019? I don't care, but I approve!
Someone did a video on it, then someone else saw it and remembered how amazing the film is, and then said someone made a video on it and so on...
@@VladDascaliuc i thought it was because of the " I tip my hat to you one legend to another" meme or something
@@VladDascaliuc I know MovieClips uploaded a whole bunch of clips from the movie a few months ago and also Cosmodore did a vid on it, but I just noticed how it's been coming back.
@@UnorthodoxIndividual I mean, that's how the internet works. If you look at the actual origin of most memes you will see that they gain popularity long after they're made. "Oh shit, here we go again" for example is from GTA San Andreas, a 2004 game.
This is pretty much the same.
@@VladDascaliuc yeah, people love finding weird old stuff and making it topical, hey have you heard of this thing called *b e a n s*
This movie is meta af
Think about it, the premise is that of a lizard in an aquarium being transported trough life
Plastic wife, fake skies, mundane day to day so much so he invents himself a life
He is longing for something more to happen, for his glass bubbles to shatter (the truman show)
As he wished it, it happens
Is it in his mind or a true event?
And heres where it gets me hard:
Is it simply another one of his plays or did it really happens and it is about him coming to terms with all his fears, flaws, hopes and regrets?
So i'd say that some things are important like time, foes, the fact he said he killed them brothers with one bullet but yet he defeated Jake with one too, but without even firing it
There is so much
The paradise at the end when he finaly crossed that road
An allegory for paradise or finaly being free after having bountiful things kept away from him since birth?
He is the working class stuck in the american dream who got transformed from fighting for his ideals, finding a community and helping it in adversity, etc...
I have so many point of views on this movie and its why i find it fascinating
In the end i read it as a classic: just be yourself and live the life you aspire to
/don't lie to yourself and wait for the glass to break
@@enriquesaenz3574 I think the hawk represents something that Jake (symbolizing Death) even fears. Perhaps some kind of higher power akin to an angel or demigod.
I love the fear rattlesnake jake has towards eagles. It makes him feel more like a person or(snake) and gives him more personality rather than a stone cold, fearless villain.
Your Next Door Neighbors it’s like he knows his limits
They were hawks and yeah I agree!
Plus the fact that in addition to playing along Rango's fake identity at first to break it, he got caught off guard when he came back to the town a different man yet in a sense lived up to the very legend he lied himself as, and of course after that, humbly gave Rango his respects before leaving the town himself.

Lads, don't be so defensive.
It's great when you can see the writers playing around with the idea of "how would this animal use their natural talents to solve this problem?"
That same question about animal characteristics being used to shape the characters, their actions, and how they go through situations, is a big part of the movie Rango. Which is another reason why that movie is so great.
I just wished more filmmakers utilized that same potention when writing for their "talking animal" movies.

Basically, the blind mole thought he said "lesbian" which sounds like "thespian" and I'm not totally sure but I've seen other people say that homosexuality to some degree had not been legalized in seven states when the movie was released.

On the subject of brilliant cinematography:
The lighting. The lighting was so good. Most CGI films glaze over lighting effects where, especially in the final scene, you can see the animators took their time ensuring that, with all the mist in the air, you could see the prismatic effects of the lighting.
It is phenomenal.
"No man can walk out on his own story."
This has got to be my favorite line in the whole movie. It's simple and yet conveys such a deeper meaning. God damn, I love this movie.
Can you explain it?

I noticed that you mentioned the unique look of the action scenes in this animated film. It's because it is unique. The reason the action looks so good is because industrial light and magic made this. It is their only feature length animation film. Normally they do special affects for major block busters.

Rango in 2011 being unique, funny and amazing:
2011 cinema: “Strangers don’t last long around here!”
a year earlier guardians of ga'hoole came out to the same reaction..amazing films no one talked about?..really?...their like epic kids films...I like kung fu panda and toy story 3 too but like while those films deserve praise a lot of shit films got way more attention at that time and it makes me sad cause when films have actual effort put into them I want them to make money...it shouldn't pay to be lazy and cost someone money to make the best product they can for real fans to enjoy even if a lot of people dont notice..i notice...

I remember Guardians of Ga'hoole.
That was a good movie.
I still think that Gylfie is the cutest thing I've ever seen on screen. xD
I was already a big fan of Wolves of the Beyond when that movie came out, at that point I didn't even know about the series before Faolan. Loved that movie when I watched it, though I think it got a lot of just criticism about trying to cram a bunch of books into one. If Marvel and Harry Potter taught us anything, ridiculously long series of movies are seriously profitable.
Also WTF I CLICK ON A VIDEO ABOUT MY FAVORITE KIDS MOVIE AND I'M RANTING ABOUT MY FAVORITE BOOK SERIES WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!

"No man can walk out on his own story." That's the line that hit me the most. Doubly so because it came from clint eastwood. In his classic role as the iconic cowboy Outlaw hero The man with no name. Cause it's echoing how it was in the movies He did. The man with no name couldn't walk out on his own story as much as he wanted to.

What story doesn't work would be things like animals of farthing wood, Plague Dogs, secret of NIHM or Felidae, as the characters being animals is a huge point of the plot in the first place.
zootopia would 100% work with humans, the main conflict is supposed to be a metaphor for racism, something that ain't difficult to achieve
Rango is a well done satire of traditional west movies, so it works because they didnt want to use talking animals just to be cute, but to change the dynamics and show another side of both genres
Beastars.
imagine humans in this movie uttering the line at 7:45
I’ve been saying for years that Rango is a cinematic masterpiece. It’s one of my favorite animated movies, and one of my favorite movies overall, and I always felt it was underappreciated.
At least it won a well deserved Oscar...
Ain't the only one. I have been telling this to ppl I know personally too.
I've been saying this since day 1 to every person I know
I think most people are turned off at this because it's not really a film for kids.
This movie is not underrated nor is it a hidden gem. It's always been popular and always been good. Hidden gems don't win Oscars.
My dad hates animated shows but he was amazed when he watched this, truly a masterpiece
Same. My dad grew up watching westerns, so when we watched this he was thrilled
He loves this and red dead redemption
Why did he hate animation may I ask?
Has to be one of my favorite movies ever made. And it couldn't be done in live action either, the way the movie takes advantage of the animation medium is insanely creative

Had one of the funniest eulogies for a dead person in cinema:
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to honor this man. Mr. Merrimack, you have the right to remain silent. Speak now or forever hold your peace. Amen."
I honestly fucking lost it when I re watched the movie and heard that line.
There's a director's cut?? Now I have an excuse to rewatch this movie, thanks
I dont get it?
@@LMAOuncleDEMO instead of it being a regular eulogy there are 3 lines that have nothing to do with a eulogy. "You have the right to remain silent" from the Miranda rights when being arrested. "Speak now or forever hold your peace"usually said by an officiant at a wedding. And lastly "Amen" which is mentioned at the end of a prayer. It's an insight on how "unknowledgable" Rango is.
