How on earth you claim it to be the best superhero movie ever? Haven't you heard of The Dark Knight? Dark Knight is leaps and bounds better than any other superhero movie including Spider Man 2. In fact it is so great that it's unfair for the other superhero movies to compare them to The Dark Knight. The Dark Knight sits at number 3 at IMDB for more than a decade now. The Dark Knight is one of the best movies ever and it's very high on that best movies ever list..Third place. Spider Man 2 was amazing though. One of the best comic book movies yes. Easily in top 10 of the best comic book movies. But best? Best is The Dark Knight.
@@urazsoktay5275 You said dark knight way too much. It's over hyped and a lot of it got pushed into supernatural territory due to the death of heath ledger
@@LoftOfTheUniverse Dark Knight sits at number three at best movies ever at imdb consistently for more than ten years. Nothing about Dark Knight is hype or overrated. It's a pure classic by any means.
And the city is unified with solidarity. It made NYC such a "small town" instead of a bustling city with capitalists on one side and struggling homeless people in another. The writing inspires us because it brings us hope that people in the background can actually be good and worthy of saving.
I feel like the story of the original spider man is more “pure” if that makes any sense. A lot of new super hero movies are so overindulgent in how badass they are and how sick being a superhero is, but Tobey’s Spiderman is a normal person who begrudgingly accepts responsibility because he feels it’s the right thing to do.
I hated the Andrew Garfield movies because the action scenes looked like a VCR on fast-forward. It's the sign of a novice musician when they play a 3:20 song in 2:45. Andrew Garfield truly had a novice director especially for the action scenes, and the movie quality suffered greatly. Also there just wasn't true chemistry between Emma Stone & Andrew Garfield ...
One thing I love so much about this trilogy is how alive the world feels outside of spider man. The extras have meaningful interactions with the characters that give them personality, and in turn, gives the setting of New York personality as well, instead of just making the whole world revolve around the superhero.
Just got done watching the new Spider-Man and while I loved the new Spider-Man Peter really is missing that presence of being the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Even in Amazing Spider-Man Andrew would communicate with the “pedestrians” but it was nothing like Tobey’s movies. They’re so full of life and all the extras are so memorable in their own ways. They truly gave New York a life of its own which makes it all that worthwhile protecting to the audience.
I feel like an important distinction is that in this trilogy, Spider Man's powers are simply elements of his character not what drives the whole story. In Marvel movies on the other hand, their powers are the very things that drive the whole story.
Spiderman hasnt always been about the super powers. Its has mostly been a story of the responsibility of power and how someone like peter parker comes to accept that. Its something that is relevant to anyone. I feel the best comics and movies go into the person behind the mask.
Yes! Thank you for putting into words what I was feeling but could not vocalize. There's just something missing from so many superhero films that have been made recently and this is exactly it. This is the same reason why the Nolan Batman series works so well, Bruce Wayne's abilities are a vessel through which his story is told. We see Bruce Wayne and Peter Parker in the original Spider-Man series at their highest of highs and lowest of lows in ways that feel realistic to the audience.
I’m just still amazed how Raimi is a world renowned director known for horror movies but made one of, if not, the best superhero movies ever made. Just amazes me for some reason
This is out of context but do you guys think that The Dark knight and Spider-Man 2 are prolly the best live action superhero movies or if their are others like them. I wish I could rank those 2 movies on a top 5 list but they are really close
We all must ask one question that "WHAT HAPPENED TO THE WORKING CLASS SPIDER-MAN ?" . Who was just an average college student and now Spiderman uses too much STARK TECHNOLOGY, he is not smart anymore without too much money and he wants to become an influencer these days.
Same. I like, even love, some of the memorable scenes the MCU brought us, but no amount of lasers, heroes, aliens or spaceships can ever capture the excitement of the train sequence in this movie. It's everything a Spider-Man battle should be, and through that shows us exactly who Spider-Man is.
The only reason why Tobey's Spiderman is so loved is because of the nostalgia I can guarantee most people who say Tobey is the best are millennial personally I would rank the movies like this 1. Spiderman Homecoming 2. Spider-Man 2 3. Far From Home 4. The Amazing Spiderman 1 5. Spider-Man 1 6. Spider-Man 3 7. The Amazing Spiderman 2 I think something we can all agree on tho is that Spiderman No Way Home will be the best of all of them

The best and ironically most sad part of the film is when he helps the girl escape the fire, and he over hears the fireman say someone died and he realizes that he could’ve saved the other person but someone suffered bc of Peter choice not to be Spider-Man. Great inner struggle
@@smellslikeproductions Exactly, he didn't have his powers because he had chosen to stop being spider man. If he had never chosen to stop being spider man and still had his powers he would have been able to save both people easily. It adds to the inner struggle Peter goes through throughout the film as he had chosen to live his own life over his responsibility. He could have saved both if he had still been spider man, but he had chosen to just be Peter Parker instead. Personally though I think the saddest part of the movie is towards the beginning, Peter is talking with Aunt May about Uncle Ben and how he is gone, standing right in front of her as she says something along the lines of "If I were standing in front of the man responsible for his death, well I don't know what I would do" which is absolutely devastating considering Peter knows that in a way he is the man responsible for Uncle Ben's death. I watched Spider Man 1 and 2 again last night for the first time in at least a decade and that scene brought me to tears knowing the guilt Peter must have felt in that moment.
@@castlewhale4746 but he needed to give up being spiderman in order to finally find clarity and regain his powers. Other wise his dual life and internal struggle would've continued to eat away at him and he still would've lost his powers anyway. I literally just got done watching this with my 9 year old daughter tonight, who was not impressed with the Holland Spider-Man version. We watched the first Maguire Spider-man two nights ago and the 2nd tonight. At the end she said to me "My opinion on Spider-man has changed now, because these movies are awesome." And the only reason I showed her the Holland versions first was because a year ago we failed in our attempt to watch the 1st Maguire Spider-Man when William Dafoe scared the crap out of her when he opened his eyes during his transformation to the Goblin scene. So I went with the less scary Holland versions to expose her to the character. Over the winter break she told me she wanted to try the older ones again, and that she wouldn't be scared. It was a success. Also a great way to set her up for when we can watch No Way Home, as she will have a connection to the portrayed villains. I consider Nolan's Batman Trilogy and Sam Raimi's Spiderman Trilogy the best the Superhero Genre has offered us. I think you described perfectly why I love the Spiderman Trilogy. So the story of Nolan's Batman for me is of a Man without Powers who knew he couldn't just go out and beat people so he instead wanted to become a symbol, uncorruptable by greed or power, feared by the the evil and a hope for the citizens of Gotham. Both of these Trilogies has yet to be matched in my opinion.

The fact he described the whole 2nd movie excellently, and didn’t even touch on the Tobey and Harry Osborn conflict/subplot just shows how good this movie and entire series really was! Great vid btw!!
People say the Peter and MJ relationship is the weakest link of these movies, my hot take is that Peter and Harry’s relationship is the weak link. There aren’t too many scenes of them acting like best friends, and Peter doesn’t really do much to repair his relationship with Harry as much as he does with Aunt May and MJ. It’s ironic because Peter and MJ’s relationship across all these movies feels more like a close friendship than the one he’s suppose to have with Harry.
The pacing and writing in this movie is really dense. It would take 2hrs and 30 minutes to describe all of the movie because there is just so much going on in everyone's heads, kind of like the best star trek episodes where they squeezed a 90-minutes movie into 50 minutes ...
I rewatched this movie in preparation for No Way Home. When watching it, I started getting emotional because I realised how perfect this movie is and it is my favourite film of all time now.
I was kind of reminded of a story from the bible ( ik ik please bear with me) God wanted to grant King Solomon a wish. He could have wished for anything: Wealth, glory, a long life, but he wished for “a heart that listens“. And God was so pleased with that wish he gave him not only a listening heart, but wealth, glory and a long life, too. It kind of struck me as poetic in a reassuring way. Or maybe I just wanted to say that Spider-Man is literally biblical
The Spider Man saga often reminds me of the book of Job, with everything in his life going wrong and him never being able to catch a break, yet he still does what he thinks is right. He also reminds me of Paul in the way that he reflects on his inner turmoil and conflict. He understands the duality himself as a man and the double life he lives.
@@TheRizzardOfOz. the wonderful thing about art, film, and literature is that everyone looks at and interprets it through their personal worldview. We all have different takeaways and themes we pick up on based on our life experiences. So there is no right or wrong answer to how you view a movie. If you don't like how someone else interprets the movie, it doesn't mean they're wrong and you're right or vice versa. It just means you guys have different worldviews and that's OK!
The one thing I liked about Peter's character more than anything was that he didn't actively give up being spider-man, that only happened once his powers went away due to his crisis. His dilemma was not "to be or not to be spider-man", it was to convince himself that he has to live without being Spider-Man
This represents one of my favorite versions of the hero's tale. Only in giving up the thing that he wants the most, can the hero actually attain it. It's a beautifully profound idea and you see it in other stories like Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone. Harry can only get the stone by denying the power that it would grant him. Sometimes in life, the only way to have love, wealth or power is not to seek it directly, but to have it occur as a natural consequence of pursuing the truest version of yourself. You let go out the outcome, without consideration for it. In doing so, you make that outcome more likely.
This is the truest way to overcome anxieties in life. Wanting something with all your might only distances yourself from that. Not wanting something will bring you closer to that. Letting go of the outcome like you said brings you peace during the journey and a higher chance of success and achievement.
Spider-Man 2 looks grounded in some kind of reality by focusing on 1 villain, 1 potential villain, and Peter's personal problems so the story and visual fx are tops. When Spidey fights 100 drones or fights 6 villains at the Statue of Liberty it becomes a painful CG FEST. The Tom Holland Spidey vfx for me..looks more and more like an animated cartoon.
I'm not really sure I agree with you on the Tom Holland movies. I do agree that Spider-Man 2 was grounded well and that the film worked well due to how well executed the narrative was. To me, Tom's movies are actually some of the more grounded ones because they rely less on comic book tropes & less on adhering to comic book lore and they rely more on making the whole narrative tie together and work. The villains in Tom's movies are among the most realistic to me in terms of personality & motivation.
Experiencing a lot of synchronicity right now, this whole day I've been watching videos about Spider-Man 2 and now you post another one. Is everyone rediscovering the genius of this masterpiece again?
Tobey's Spiderman is not an overpowered god like nanotechnology enhanced Tom Holland. He is simple grounded and relatable. They don't make supes like that anymore.
Tom's wasn't in Homecoming, and he doesn't use his nanotech really that much in Far From Home either--at least not to his advantage. Really most of the fancy Stark tech is just for a flashy new coat of paint and less about function in most of the movies in regards to actually resolving the conflict at hand.
@@MeTakingAStand You do know he still used technology in Homecoming right? Same with Far From Home, he still used technology to make his new suit which is an enhanced version of Homecoming suit. Also he has this A.I companion in his suit like how Tony has Jarvis.
Spider-Man 2 reminds us that being a super hero is no joke and has a lot of sacrifices and needs a lot of responsibility. As a kid we dreamed being a super hero but in reality is, it's a job that is not easy.
Ugh! This is literally my favorite super hero movie EVER. And the scene with Aunt May where she forgives him and tells him she’s proud of him for telling him the truth (and basically shows she knows he’s Spider-Man, and then tells him not to strain himself while helping her move lol) is pure gold.
PS: Spider-Man 2 is an allegory for real life. Many of us have struggled with school, relationships, making ends meet, and trying to make a difference in the word, while actually being invisible to most of the world.
Spiderman saving everyone on the train is iconic as hell. Emotions I haven't felt in any of the new stand alone marvel movies. I did feel sad when Tom's spidey turned to dust but his stand alone movies haven't come close to this movie emotionally. And I agree his theme is too good.
That's a complaint I've always had with the newer superhero movies as well, they rarely show anybody actually directly SAVE anyone. Sure heroes can be badass and have cool action scenes but being a hero is more than just fighting, it's about showing your humanity by being the most powerful man on the planet, and nearly dying to save just one regular person. It shows that the hero is never full of himself, or develops a god complex, but that he is not powerful for us, but powerful because of us. It's like a police officer putting his life on the line for everyday citizens. If you went to give him/her a gift for helping you almost all would deny it because it's their JOB to help you. They're not above you or below you. They are side by side with the citizens they protect, and that's something that I feel Tobey really exemplifies. It's as the man in the first movie on the bridge says to the Goblin when he's fighting Spiderman. "You mess with one of us you mess with ALL of us!" In reference to Spidey. It's as you said here, that New York is as much a character in these movies as any other character. These newer movies don't show that deep connection between the heroes and the people they protect, the citizens are more just sideline entities.
I also just love how the villains operate in the first 2 movies. They’re not just ONLY going after 1 huge event and we only get the big confrontation at the end. We get a lot of small confrontations throughout. A true comic book movie
One word to truly describe the incredible cultural impact this movie franchise has given us........THE MEMES. Sure the godfather is great and all, probably one of the greatest movies of all time but nobody ever mentions it on a day to day basis like with the power of memes LUL.
Well with Spiderman 2 there is a ton of cheesy dialogue and ridiculous moments which there isn't really in movies like The Godfather and Saving Private Ryan.
This is the greatest video ever made thank you you don’t even know how much you helped me and even realize with real life about the responsibilities that have to take place in order to become a true man
I feel like josh would be really food as a lawyer. Give a good argument, support your argument with evidence, and persuade others to go with your argument not against.
This movie's opening title sequence is also just so damn good. Those hand-drawn scenes bringing the audience up to speed in conjunction with Elfman's score is excellent.
The choice to use raindrops as the song to accompany Peter Parker just being Peter Parker no Spider-Man just every day responsibility is such a genius touch by Rami and may just be my favorite moment from the trilogy
I love it too. There's no dramatic original soundtrack, it's just a simple song anyone can listen to right now - perfect for the simple man he wants to be.
What's actually crazy about Raimi's trilogy is how small the action scenes are. Like every encounter with Spidey's villains are mostly brief, massive NY parade where G.Goblin 1st encounter with Spidey, Daily Bugle ambush by G.Goblin (when G.Goblin "wins"), and then the bridge scenes and final fights. And the rest are mostly non superhero stuffs
What I love from this trilogy is the bitter realism of life. Before this movie came out (or even after), we never have a superhero struggling in economic. I love how Sam Raimi captures the real New York City. Life there is harsh, quick, and busy. It gives the non-US audience a view about one of the most popular city in the world
Yea, I also like that even peter parker has some things to his personality that are dislikable, make it a bit more real. Like when he would kiss mj while she was with his best friend, even though he had previously expressedly told harry to shoot his shot because he was too shy.
It was stupid the movie-rights to spiderman changed for the 3rd movie and so the focus became "How can we make something as cheap as possible and call it spiderman?" which sucked ...
Spider-Man 2 is still my favorite superhero movie. It just nailed the character so well but yet was fresh and original. You could even say that Doc Ock wasn't even necessary (but was fun) as a villain because it can be argued that Spider-Man's powers and responsibility were the main antagonists against Peter.
It's focused, it gives viewers time to look around it's clever attractive sets, it's uncluttered, it gives the characters room to breathe, it has a calm unhurried pace. It is the best.
This was my favorite super hero movie because it showcased what made Peter Parker so special. He is an ordinary kid with family and friends and dreams, but also feels the call to be a hero. Like a soldier or fire fighter or police officer. We used to understand and respect the menand women who felt that call and answered it. 2002 and 2004 was a time when the world needed heroes and we got them. Now we've become plagued with bitterness and vapid betrayal. MCU heroes are snarky, with cool toys and lots of selfish motives. The only humanizing thing we see is their loss and pain. None of their hopes and dreams. That's why Holland is a cute and funny kid but Toney had all the heart.
@@florashlaksHero must feel personal to every moviegoer. Nowadays they seem too distant. One aspect of Peter in these movies that get overlooked is his vulnerable personality. He gets bullied despite being a superhero whenever he is maskless. That implies that the superpower hasn't changed who Peter is even a bit. He is the same kid who is shy, somewhat introverted and who won't beat his classmates just because he happens to have a superhero. He assumes all of the responsibilities without paying heed to the power that comes with it. He remains incorruptible
Sm2 had some of THE BEST pure superhero action sequences. Like they were lifted off the comic page and brought to life. Plus the sound track adds SO much to them. The train scene was absolutely incredible, including the people he saved not caring about his identity.
Thank you for this essay. Spider-Man 2 has been my favorite movie since it was released and I've watched tons of videos like this but you somehow managed to teach me something new. -The fact that Peter actually never wanted to be Spider-Man. He was doing it out of guilt at first -Peter wanted to be exactly like his idol Otto. Never really paid that much attention to it before but makes so much sense now. Thank you for mentioning Peter actually saving people during the train fight scene. To me it's still the most visually beautiful scene in the entire marvel movie history. (Thor's "Bring Me Thanos" being a close second.) What makes the train scene the best for me, is the fact that Peter caught AND threw 2 people like they were toys at ( 11:00 ) & ( 11:06 ) .That not only showcased his strength but also the fact that he wasn't going to give up no matter what. The look on Otto's face after that was priceless. Unfortunately we don't see heroes saving people anymore, especially during a fight scene.
Wow.. I took the music for granted, but I realise now how much of a difference it made to evoking emotion and “explaining” the character in an underlying sense. What a masterpiece. Funny thing, is that as a kid, I didn’t enjoy this film at all, but as I watched it in later years, I realised how damn great this movie is/was! Also, so true how Spider-Man feels like you too could be a superhero, rather than needing someone else to be the superhero. Wow.
As I remembered, I used to see Peter Parker stop being Spiderman in "negative" light. After watching this, it change my mind, makes me realize what I miss. I'm motivated to watch the trilogy again, man.
I don't remember what movie it was between 1,2 or 3. But my favorite scene in any superhero movie, is when Peter walks away from a dude getting assaulted in a alleyway. It's so perfect. You could really feel how powerful that choice was for him. Much more powerful in my opinion than the classic "hero sacrifices himself to save everyone" That scene reflected a choice that any one of us could potentially be facing someday...
I was growing up on Spider-Man comics and one of the most fascinating things are in the whole Spider-Man thing is that Peter really lives 2 lifes. And while struggling with his own evils inside he still needs to deal with the evils out there in the real world also. I love the duality of Spider-Man. This makes for me one of the best superheroes of all the time along with the comments during the fights. He is easily my favourite superhero since I was little and I'm a grown a** man with 2 daughters and happens my older one loves Spidey. And she lives in a great time when we have such an amazing movies, toys and games. I'm happy!
Excellent video bro, fucking love spiderman 2. Hopefully we see more of this in Dr strange multiverse of madness as Sam Rami is taking the helm on directing it
This is legitimately one of the best video essays I've seen on a superhero movie. I agree with all the points, the ideas are communicated effectively, and the editing is also very enjoyable. Amazing.
Imo the best superherp movies are ones that have a convincing antagonist. Otto Octavius was the most relatable and believable villain. His philosophy perfectly mirrored Peters and complemented his inner struggle very well. His intentions never felt overly dramatic or over the top for the situation. Unlike goblin who more or less transformed overnight we see Otto was slowly and subtly coaxed into an extreme mentality. And at the end you saw he still had a shred of humanity in him, and was able to be pulled out of his trance to stop what he had created.
I kinda feel like once he becomes evil he’s a bit too mustache twirly. For someone who’s only doing bad things because he wants to complete his life’s work, he sure seems to enjoy doing them. Like when he drops Aunt May and goes butterfingers.
I think it’s that we relate too Peter and how Tobey plays the character with that emotion he has with his face. Tobeys Spider-Man always nearly gets me teary cause we feel sorry for him. He’ll always be the best

Wow. This is a huge part of what's missing now
Just got done watching the new Spider-Man and while I loved the new Spider-Man Peter really is missing that presence of being the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
Yeah that is what the guy in the video said. And your opinion is?
I feel like an important distinction is that in this trilogy, Spider Man's powers are simply elements of his character not what drives the whole story. In Marvel movies on the other hand, their powers are the very things that drive the whole story.
Ya literally if u cut out Spider-Man action scenes,u still have a pretty good movie
That's kinda what I didn't like about it. The movie almost has nothing to do with spiderman since the writers just do whatever with his powers
Spiderman hasnt always been about the super powers. Its has mostly been a story of the responsibility of power and how someone like peter parker comes to accept that. Its something that is relevant to anyone. I feel the best comics and movies go into the person behind the mask.
Very well said.
Might be because Steve Ditko had a lot of horror infused in the Spider-Man comics. It’s neurotic and cramped, which fits Raimi like a glove.

The best and ironically most sad part of the film is when he helps the girl escape the fire, and he over hears the fireman say someone died and he realizes that he could’ve saved the other person but someone suffered bc of Peter choice not to be Spider-Man. Great inner struggle
👍
He didn’t have powers

In doing so, you make that outcome more likely.
this is a great observation!
Whoa 💯
This is the truest way to overcome anxieties in life. Wanting something with all your might only distances yourself from that. Not wanting something will bring you closer to that. Letting go of the outcome like you said brings you peace during the journey and a higher chance of success and achievement.

Have u seen no way home?

Underrated creator of the year
Spider-Man 2 is still my favorite superhero movie.
Tobey;s face perfectly captures early Peter Parker struggling with regular life pressures and SpiderMan stress.I loved his emotional portrayal
So well written... I screen shot your comment because it is so true
Cops aren't heroes, they are the hired thugs of the state. The source of all state violence
You even got the Sam Raimi Spider-Man font for the annotations 👏🏼👏🏼 well played, hope the algo boosts this
Out of all the Spider-Man movies, and even superhero movies, this movie is the most human.
Thanks for putting this exact message out for the world to listen and lament on. "Virtues of a good movie, may they not be so easily forgotten".
Thank you for this essay. Spider-Man 2 has been my favorite movie since it was released and I've watched tons of videos like this but you somehow managed to teach me something new.
-The fact that Peter actually never wanted to be Spider-Man. He was doing it out of guilt at first
-Peter wanted to be exactly like his idol Otto.
Babe wake up new Josh Keefe video just dropped
1:58 Josh keef you explained it in the most heartwarming way as if you were writing my soul all I can say I felt this way with this theme
I don't remember what movie it was between 1,2 or 3.
But my favorite scene in any superhero movie, is when Peter walks away from a dude getting assaulted in a alleyway.
It's so perfect. You could really feel how powerful that choice was for him.
Much more powerful in my opinion than the classic "hero sacrifices himself to save everyone"
That scene reflected a choice that any one of us could potentially be facing someday...
you weren't kidding when you called this a masterpiece
were you?
thanks for giving me soo much more to appreciate of a film i've always loved!
I appreciate you not slamming the other spider-men, like most other youtubers do.
Can I just say: thank you SO MUCH for making the video use the actual aspect ratio.
Hopefully we see more of this in Dr strange multiverse of madness as Sam Rami is taking the helm on directing it
I’m so excited bro lol
This is legitimately one of the best video essays I've seen on a superhero movie. I agree with all the points, the ideas are communicated effectively, and the editing is also very enjoyable. Amazing.
That’s weird I literally just watched this for the first time actually!! Love your videos Josh!!
Spider-Man 2 perfectly captures what Spider-Man is
Timeless classic this and what makes it so great is how relatable the characters are. The chats between aunt may and peter always tear me up.
Masterpiece can't even begin to compound how good this movie is

It was good but not great... kids under 14 obviously loved it. Extremely kid friendly and was eye candy. No the best though
This is the most honest and genuine review of a superhero movie ever and it really brings to light just how good the movie is
By faaaaaaaar the best superhero movie for me. His character development is so gripping and much more real than any of the ones produced these days.

@@hemantks4353nah spiderman 2 is better overall
@@Mariofans-gn1lu No lol. The Dark knight is greatest superhero movie ever. Lol not even close. People keep comparing Logan, Winter soldier, Spiderman 2 and Infinity war to Dark knight.
But Dark knight is superior to all. Logan is second and Spiderman 2 is third
@@hemantks4353 Average edgelord. TDK is excellent but it's not in the same league as SM 2. Just because a movie is campy and fun doesn't remove its impact. It makes it greater in my opinion.

Hand down, I also agree Spider-Man 2 is all-time best superhero movie ever in my heart.
I still remember the 1st time I watched this masterpiece alone at night when I was in high school, 1 of the best cinema night ever in my life.
Also, the scene when he restart his life, happy walking with amazing music and tone is one of the best flawless scene that I love.
the dark knight is for me, the intimidating criminal showing his humanity in the boat scene by throwing the remote away. That's real everyday heroism. Plenty inspiring.
The part when one of the subway passengers says about unmasked Peter Parker- "he's just a kid, no older than my son" really hit me hard.
The best part we ever get from this movie is the moral. The movie shows how we've became preoccupied to significant distractions like in reality's case, games, that we forget to appreciate the most important things in life.
