This movie felt like such a fever dream to me as a kid because I only remembered parts of it and yet never the actual film name- finding out years later it was related to jumanji was kinda weird- the aliens definitely scared the crap out of me though
Walter being an asshole to his little brother actually makes sense to me. When something life changing is happening in your life and it's outside of your control most children do lash out if it be trouble in school , being more lethargic and cold, or even bullying some weaker than yourself. This gives them a sense of control back in their life. His wish also made sense to me since a child wouldn't immediately think to get out of danger but would be selfish and want something for themselves. This is the best way to also show character growth since his second wish evolved into something selfless.
My favorite part was when Walter wishes for the astronaut’s brother to come back only for him to find out the astronaut was him from the future he gives himself closure and growth at the same time
He and the brother reminded me so much of my cousins who were around that age the time it came out. Right down to the "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!“ (which, honestly, I remember having those moments with my sister when we had been younger). So I thought both the boys did great. 😊

Josh Hutcherson has always been a really good actor. Even as the token child actor of the early 2000’s he was still giving every role a lot of depth and realness. If you haven’t seen him in Futureman, holy shit is that worth a watch.
Me and my friends would always joke that the reason Kirstin Stewart was so emotionless and made no facial expressions was because her face was still frozen from Zathura.
I will say as an older brother. The constant bickering between the two of them is one of the most natural feeling sibling relationships ive seen in movies period. And it really felt like thats what my brother and i would be dealing with rather than worry about the whole space thing. (And i first wached this movie when i was around 8 or 9)
I was so fucking certain that this movie didn’t exist and that I had dreamt the whole thing. Like I had searched everywhere and I couldn’t find it. I’m having the biggest mind fuck right now.
there's a lot of things from my child hood that im still searching for that i though were figmants of my imagination. My biggest ones was a 3D fantasy platformer rpg esque game I played in the hospital when i had an asthma attack were you play as a elf/hobbit/dwarf thing that wore purple clothes and you collect like rings or something. I thought it was a lord of the rings game, but i couldn't find anything that matched my memory.

I'd say having a quiet 'woooooooow' reaction is well done by that kid~
I know right I think that was my favorite thing about this video. That we can critique or make fun of movies that we really love, even liking that element of chaotic surrealism.
As I understand it, MOST of this movie was practical effects. I remember watching the special features, and it talked about how the whole house set was mounted on a giant mechanical arm setup, so whenever things were shaking around, they were shaking for real - also, every bit of destruction the house in the movie received actually happened to the set, so as filming went on, it just got more and more authentically wrecked-looking.
Believe it or not, the first Jumanji movie was based off a picture book written by Chris Van Allsburg. He would go on to write a sequel to the first book called Zathura, which is what this movie was based off of. So technically, Zathura is a canon sequel to Jumanji. I'm dead serious, look it up.
I definitely remember this movie cause my childhood consisted of my older sisters constantly yelling at me “get me a juice box, be-yotch!” They were fucking bullies lmao.
as a kid, about josh hutcherson's age, when i watched this i never saw the headphones and assumed that teenagers just could sleep through most stuff. as a teen and an adult......yeah im still of that mindset
You don’t notice a giant pair of headphones on someone in the middle of a frame from the waist-up? And you never noticed until someone explicitly pointed it out? That’s kind of worrying. The “you should never be trusted to drive a car” kind of worrying. That goes also for the 37 other people who gave this a thumbs-up. Get your eyes checked or something.
@@chrissmith6097 i mean i was a kid, kids arent observant ya know?? While I did notice the headphones as a kid, I didn’t categorize them as the reason she slept through all that because I would’ve slept through anything.
"They run around as if evading meteors, but actually the meteors evade them. Incredible things will happen while they play "Zathura," but they will survive. Maybe if you would've seen Jumanji first it wouldnt have been as bad like for me. But they're both scary: one has killer jungle animals and insects, the other has a killer robot and space monsters
I use to watch this all the time as a kid (my dad and I use to bond over loving space movies and monster ones) and besides hating Walter with a passion, I remember always choking on my spit when the reveal happens, I was stunned when it happened no matter how many times I watched it. Bionic, you make me love my dad a lot more for reminding me of all the times me and him would just sit and watch a movie, and talk about it all throughout it. The nostalgia hits me hard watching some of your videos, and I'm really happy i found your channel
I remember reading the book in elementary school. It’s not actually a novel, neither is Jumanji, they’re both pretty small children’s books. In the book version of Zethura there is no astronaut that turns out to be Walter. The movie is just a huge elaboration of a small book
Instead, the older brother is time warped back to when he picked up the game, possibly leaving the younger brother now unable to finish the game. Personally, that kinda fucked me up as a kid, the idea that one wrong move from _another player_ would leave _you_ trapped in the game forever.
You missed the part about Kristen Stewart’s character having a crush on the astronaut until she realized he was her brother. Surprised you skipped that because it was pretty messed up 😂
hi who ever doesn't like this movie is wrong. The movie was awesome, the board game was rad, and the video game was fucking dope. I want more Zathura in 2021
this was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I new it was basically the same as Jumanji, but never thought it was a knockoff. also that weird elevator thing was the stuff of my nightmares.
,,There's no way they can look at a star for that long and their eyes aren't hurting". You see, BionicPIG , the dark side of the force has many abilities, some are considered to be unnatural.
we had Zathura on dvd when I was a kid, actually still have that same dvd today in fact! I watched Zathura a bunch when I was younger and you know what, I think I'm gonna rewatch it sometime.
I always thought this was the sequel of Jumanji. Child me thought that the board game was cursed and changed to best fit the interests of those who pick it up or changed with the time.
I've heard somewhere that Zathura is just on the other side of Jumanji. Like literally, you grab the board, flip it, and it's Zathura. Now I don't know if this is true or not, but I just wanted to mention it. Though your idea sounds way cooler to me
this film solidified itself as a historical landmark because it was one of the 4 most memorable Josh Hutcherson appearances to me. watching all his film felt like i actually saw him grow up which is a surreal concept for a young boy
what i love is how the kid characters just- act like kids, bc of course they'd be extremely infuriating and dumb, although walter was just unlikable for no reason near enough, they could of at least given him somewhat of a reason for why he treated his little bro so badly.
Considering his parents went through a divorce, He might have took it very hard and being a kid, didn't know how to handle it. I'm not a psychologist however.
I'm pretty sure it was because of their parents divorce and I even figured as much as a kid but I do think they could have hinted at it a little more strongly yet in a still subtle way.
My guess is it's because of the divorce. When Danny asked Walter when he got so mean that actually implied that Walter's behavior was a recent development. Perhaps this adventure was what Walter needed to remind him of the important bond between brothers.
Ya I don’t think real life physics and biology was or is ever a factor in movies specifically made for kids. When you have the opportunity to glaze over plot points, most filmmakers do for the sake of making something flashy and fun to make a buck off of
When has real life physics or biology ever been a plot point in a movie? Oh, never? Oh, boring facts, getting in the way of the point I want to make... that filmmakers make films to make money. Screw it, I’ll do it anyways and I’ll be applauded for such a uniquely clever and subtle thought.
Even in non kids movies those things aren't a factor so what's your point? Unless you're telling me that aliens from space fighting a jock who was frozen in ice, a big green Shrek monster and a tin can with boosters is real?
The dialogue is incredibly charming and funny! I like that the astronaut just started acting like a babysitter when the kids started arguing. Like this SPACE WAR VETERN has to take care of two brats who are having a very normal sibling fight and I think that’s hilarious. The dialogue also sounds very natural! Genuinely I really like this movie and I might watch it myself!

It's a sequel, based off of the book that is a direct sequel to the Jumanji book (by the same author, too). It uses the same formula & everything on purpose. People only thought it was a knock-off because they didn't bother Googling it or looking at the ads for it.

Josh Hutcherson has always been a really good actor. Even as the token child actor of the early 2000’s he was still giving every role a lot of depth and realness. If you haven’t seen him in Futureman, holy shit is that worth a watch.

Fun fact: the robot in this movie was mostly practical effects
For real? It looks so good! It still holds up.
And it was voiced by Frank Oz!
I think the torso of the robot suit was real, and most of the Zorgon suit was real as well (think they cgi'd the human head out)
Yee
Believe it or not, the first Jumanji movie was based off a picture book written by Chris Van Allsburg. He would go on to write a sequel to the first book called Zathura, which is what this movie was based off of. So technically, Zathura is a canon sequel to Jumanji. I'm dead serious, look it up.

It took me a bit to realize that Zathura is the movie I liked a lot when I was younger because it was space themed.
A masterpiece. One of those movies that you would just rewatch every time it was broadcasted on tv.
Ads: We're a good family movie
Walter: "Get me a juice box, BEEOTCH"
"They run around as if evading meteors, but actually the meteors evade them. Incredible things will happen while they play "Zathura," but they will survive. That helps explain why they can still breathe when they open the front door and discover that their house is now in orbit around Saturn."
Hope this explanation helps some.
I never even saw Jumanji. This movie was just like one of my fav movies as a kid but it really scared me.
How old are you?
It's a nice film. It's the prequel to Zathura.
Maybe if you would've seen Jumanji first it wouldnt have been as bad like for me. But they're both scary: one has killer jungle animals and insects, the other has a killer robot and space monsters
I recommend Jumangi
I use to watch this all the time as a kid (my dad and I use to bond over loving space movies and monster ones) and besides hating Walter with a passion, I remember always choking on my spit when the reveal happens, I was stunned when it happened no matter how many times I watched it.
Bionic, you make me love my dad a lot more for reminding me of all the times me and him would just sit and watch a movie, and talk about it all throughout it.
The nostalgia hits me hard watching some of your videos, and I'm really happy i found your channel
God I remember being terrified of the Zorgons after watching this as a kid.
Same just like the skeksis from dark crystal
Surprised you skipped that because it was pretty messed up 😂

what i love is how the kid characters just- act like kids, bc of course they'd be extremely infuriating and dumb, although walter was just unlikable for no reason near enough, they could of at least given him somewhat of a reason for why he treated his little bro so badly.
Considering his parents went through a divorce, He might have took it very hard and being a kid, didn't know how to handle it.
