I don't know about other people, but in my eyes it's implied that Milo's grandfather narrowed down more or less where Atlantis should be, and that Whitmore's immense wealth and access would have led to the course being more accurately plotted. However, without the book, knowing the entrance to Atlantis is somewhere on the sea floor would be like knowing there's a needle in a haystack without having access to a magnet.

I kinda think the reason the crew gave him the cold shoulder for so long was because he wasn't one of them. Almost all of them seem to know each other, most have had to work hard for everything they have; and then there's Milo, who loves Atlantis and that was apparently sufficient for a $1 billion expedition that cost 90% of the crew their lives before they even reached the front door. I'm also willing to bet they were told not to get attached in case he resisted once their real mission started.

In the event of an engine failure of the main submarine, or any other extraneous variables, a hot air balloon would be extremely useful as a method of attracting help and/or attention for the mission. If something cocks up before they reach Atlantis, then it's a call for help. If they deploy it after arrival, it can be used as a way to more quickly transport items of extreme value.

there's a nostalgia group for this movie on fb, and it's got the writers Tab Murphy and Gary Trousdale in it. They worked on the story too and Gary is also is the director of the Atlantis.
They are SO interactive with everyone, not only will they usually answer any questions anyone has about the movie, be it about the process, the music, the inspiration, the writing, but they'll just pop in for chats fairly often. I believe a few other crew members are in the group as well, and it's just really nice to see everyone there, as well as to see the love for this movie burn so still burn so hot.

He’s been doing it since he was a young adult dog, and we think he may die soon, but luckily he’s found out that the bricks of our new fireplace are warm, and sleeps on them whenever he’s not trying to break into our refrigerator. Battle of Naboo, Battle of Geonosis, Battle of Coruscant, Battle of Yavin, Battle of Hoth, Battle of Endor, Battle of Zion (Matrix), Battle of Hogwarts, Battle of New York (Avengers), Battle of Chicago (Transformers) . . . The Battle of Atlantis . . .

You do realize all the plot holes, the huge fleet being prepared already, the crew being mean to Milo, ridiculing Atlantis despite being fully prepared for it bringing fighter biplanes and giant blimp, and the missing page, can all be explained if you assume that everyone else already understood the journal's content and are just putting up an act in front of Milo, right?
Milo isn't the only person that can read the journal. He's just the only one being kept in the dark to be their best actor to buy entrance to the Atlantis and sweet talk Atlanteans into telling them where the crystal is (which turns out wasn't needed, further hinting that Rourke can decipher ancient symbols just fine without Milo). Kida went along with him was just a bit weird, but this is a magic crystal we're talking about and you can pull out theories for days about why she's not fighting back. But the rest of the plot holes are pretty clear cut.

Watched this so much growing up, and having loved watching the Stargate film, which has a very similar setup, I ate this up. Music and art direction is great, and I love the variety of characters.

"Atlantis The Lost Empire" is a really strange way to spell Treasure Planet

The main character staying behind reminds me of the original Stargate Movie!

This and treasure planet are probably the most underrated Disney movies, I love them, they don't get enough love
