Maybe that is for the best. It makes movies like this that more of a gem. Plus, we've seen what happens to any film style that catches on, it gets done to death. Sony was actually really revolutionary with this, they had set up rigs that allow them to manually control "virtual cameras" and aim them around to better capture the skakey cam of documentaries...and they continued to revolutionize by NEVER USING IT AGAIN, or bothering ti revolutionize until Spider-Verse

This movie is very unknown. It has funny moments, and it has this fun documentary style feel. Even that one fire urchin scene I found hilarious. Broken, broken, gone, gone, broken, broken, broken…
It like Sony only good at making movie that use different format in storytelling. Spider-verse have crazy animation while this movie use mock-documentery
Did you guys know Surf's Up is actually a classic in Brazil? The brazilian dub is gold tier, since most voice actors use the Rio dialect. The story takes place in "Frio" de Janeiro in the movie (frio means cold in portuguese), and the scene where Glenn throws a snowball at Cody, he says: "throw mom to see if it bounces, dude!" And it just became a classic in brazilian dubbing 😁😁
Fun fact: The animation team set up a VR-like system in order to capture and use the movements of a real life camera man, which is why the camera movements feel so much like a real life documentary
Dude I fucking LOVED watching Surf’s Up as a kid! That sea urchin gag? The “broken, broken, gone, gone… Broken broken, gone-“ thing is something I still vividly remember and my family still references from time to time 😂 The mockumentary stuff was so captivating for me-I loved how real the camera movement felt and the way they used it to excel the humor and such. Genuinely a gem of a movie. I’m 18, almost 19 now and I guarantee I could still watch that movie in full and completely enjoy it even knowing everything that happens still. Honestly it’s crazy we didn’t get more movies like it, but I think the fact that we didn’t is what still makes it feel so ridiculously fresh many years later.
DUDE. That damn sea urchin is engrained into my brain so deeply that if I ever get dementia that's the only thing I'm going to be able to remember. My dad would parrot the sea urchin lines EVERY SINGLE DAY for my entire childhood. I vividly recall my mom being so annoyed at him doing it, but he did it for so long and so consistently that she eventually caved in and started to parrot it too. I remember watching this movie at least once a month for over a decade, man. We still have the original disk for it in the family living room! Also I totally agree on the fact that I can still watch it and enjoy it fully, like somehow it was preserved from aging poorly.
My family's dog is named Maverick. Not after the big stupid wave. Not after the big stupid war aircraft movie TopGun. He's named after the cool penguin in from Surf's Up aka Cody Mavericks
I remember just being amazed by this movie because of the concept and an animated movie no less, it has the feel of pixar bloopers and it’s hilarious honestly
This movie is a beautiful love letter to surfing, like you can FEEL the love pouring from the entire team. Some of the voice actors are real life surfers too. This movie is so important to me. It doesn't even have to be stricte about surfing; it's about loving your hobby and loving the process of it, not just winning. I pretend the sequel doesn't exist though (just like it's common knowledge that Pacific Rim has only 1 movie)
I find it funny that Kor knows Jeff Bridges from "Tron" and not "The Big Lebowski" even though the cardigan he wears in nearly every single video is *his* cardigan
