Very informative! I liked how you restored the saw. I’ll add one thing that I got from a woodworking book by a famous woodworker: If you have a dull handsaw, instead of sharpening it at the correct angle, instead file all the teeth straight across at 90°, same as an old-fashioned ripsaw and it will actually cut faster than it did before through wood. I tried this on an old saw and it worked. Also, when you clamp blade between two pieces of wood clamp them along the bottom of the teeth so the file actually makes a mark on the wood as you pass it through the teeth that way you know where you’ve been and don’t have to make pencil marks. Your saw of course has multi-edged cutting teeth so you wouldn’t do that angle.
Thanks for sharing such a detailed tip! That method of filing at 90° sounds effective, especially for ripsaws. I’ll have to try the clamping technique you mentioned. Great insight!
Throw it in white vinegar(submerge) leave it and forget about for a day or two. I dont care how rusted it is your gonna be surprised. Tools etc... and why youve forgot the tool in the vinegar stop by a harbour freight and buy a saw sharpener for 6.99. While i applaud your tenacity and old school methods i cant help but wonder 1. Do you have a job. 2. I seen the wood you went thru to find the saw are you a carpenter? 3 If you are, then you know it would be very rare to be able to take that kind of time to restore it. Again I admire the methodology the precision and the fortitude. The fact that maybe thats the only saw you have and you live deep in the Sahara desert, the practacality is beyond over the top. Thank you for all your effort my friend. From a Handy Man.

This is a “tri” edge saw. There are 3 sides to sharpen on every tooth! This is a “pull” only saw! They make a special file for this!! Did not see this file!

@@creationholic101. They are called a “feather file”…it is a very narrow, flattened diamond shape. A feather file makes it possible to get in between the teeth and achieve the proper angle on the tooth. The real point of sharpening is not to spare the 5 bucks, but to have a saw that is always perfectly sharpened as to sharpen it as soon as it begins to get duller is fast, while to do it when the teeth are already dull takes much longer. With a disposable blade most of us try to get the most from it and for 2/3 of its life is already no more in peek condition, you spend more time cutting with a saw that is not as fast and precise as when the blade that was new then the time you spare not having to sharpen. That told it is possible to sharpen only few of the disposable blades with a regular file, often the disposable blades are hardened so hard that you need a special diamond file to sharpen them, a regular file is ineffective with them and gets damaged from them, this is true for the Japanese disposable blades and many others. Ciao from Italy.
A good blade, a really good blade, costs about $79. You can cut a 3" limb in 3 pulls. That triangular file has the wrong angles for those saw teeth. Sure it works, but if you're going to all this labor, you may as well do it right & get a supremely sharp blade.

Im 77 yrs old. We did that when i was a kid living off grid as they call it now. No plumbing, electricity, or gas and a long way ftom town with not much money. The heat treat was unnecessary as the blade was treated when made doing again probably removed the temper. Try cutting Black Locust after that temper.
Thanks for sharing your experience! You’re right about the heat treatment. It’s incredible how things were done back then without all the conveniences we have now!

You have Sharpen only the tip of saw rather than the sharpening the middle side. Is that right method?
Thanks 🔥
