First off, if the file surface reflects light, the teeth have been laid down from improper use. You demonstrate improper use near the end of your clip. Do not drag the file across the material on the back stroke, lift the teeth off the material during the back stroke. Once a file rusts to any great degree, the edge of the teeth have rusted as well destroying their edge. Acid washing and scrubbing a misused and abused file leaves one with a clean, dull file. Learn proper filing technique and how to use a file card. Then after carding a file, oil it, and for Pete's sake hang it or put it in a makeshift sheath and do not chuck it in a drawer loose with other files. They will ruin their hardened, sharp, brittle edges by contacting each other. Pretty soon you have a chunk of hardened high carbon steel material for making scrapers, a utility knife, a paper weight, or to use as land-fill.
regarding dragging the teeth on the backstroke, We have all been taught this. Fireball tool did an amazing in depth test and showed that the files did not dull due to back dragging. It surprised me but the results were hard to argue with. ruclips.net/video/52d0TmmQ5yI/видео.html
Argue all night and day if you like, what I have found is files don’t get dull from ‘ back stroking ‘, they get dull from filing things that are too hard. You can use picture perfect filing strokes and lift up for return stroke with every cut, if material is too hard it will dull right out.
Looks like pretty good results. Files can be cleaned that way and using an acid will dissolve the stuck material. Of course the type acid you use depends on how long you put the file in the acid as well... Thumbs Up!

Great way to restore an old file instead of scrapping it. My parents grew up in the Great Depression and there was an old saying back then, "Use it up and wear it out. Make it do or do without'.
Your title should be how to CLEAN and remove surface rust and dirt from a dirty rusted file, without a file card. Also claiming razor sharp??? You didn't sharpen anything, you just cleaned it. If you clean your file when you're done using them, they could last you a lifetime. Storage of file is just as important . I see guys with drawer of their toolbox loaded with a pile of files, and they wonder why most of them are not sharp anymore. Although it is better than some people I have worked with who clean their files on a spinning wire wheel on bench grinder. Please don't ever touch my files.
File card, okay, I didn't know what it was called for sure when I made my comment, but I have a file brush (card), has short metal bristles and gets the crud out from the cuts. Thanks for the correct name for that brush.
So true. However, it's obvious that it's not about obtaining a good file. It's about making a monetized video that has already gotten 100's of thousands of views in just a few days - which we have been pulled into like mouths to flame. d: )
When I was in the US Navy 50 years ago. We were taught to use chalk to keep the file from rusting. Worked great. You take the chalk and rub it into the teeth of the file. Totally filling up the file's teeth.
In high-school my shop teacher said use lemon juice, but vinegar is an acid too. As far as using a toothbrush buy a card file. Wire brush used to clean files. The file wasn't dull it was full of rust deposits that clogged the fillets.

Try using a file card. If you card the file once in a while and keep it oiled with thin oil it will stay sharp for a long time. Then always use the file PROPERLY. Don't file on the back stroke The file card is just a fully looking wire brush MADE for cleaning and maintaining a file.
I put rusty files in vinegar and let them soak for a few days. They clean right up like new. Use a file brush when you take them out. Soak as many as you can get in whatever you use. I fill a glass jar to the top with all files submerged. They will look like new.

It is a great video and it works. Now you need to learn how to prevent it from happening again. Don’t drag your file back across the work piece. That bends the sharp cutting-edge over making it dull. Also invest in a file card or a small wire brush. While you are filling fell for when the file fells like it hits a bump. That is a burr caught in the teeth of the file. There is another process to clean and sharpen an old file very quickly, which consists of leaving the file immersed in pure lemon juice for twenty four hours and then washing it in running water to remove the acid from the lemon, washing it with liquid detergent and then drying it well with a cloth, spreading it on the Use a lot of wd file or any other release agent and let it dry in the sun, I can guarantee that the file will look like new. 👍

Yup, just like the professionals do, but with a slightly quicker acid. It eats metal away, so the sharpening is automatic. I didn't realize it cleaned and derusted files that well and will have to try this.
A machnists told me over 50 years ago the way to sharpen a file is to place it in a container of acid. Never told me how long. Have 40 to 60 year old files from 4 to 10" long still fairly sharp because I store them on pulley lagging ( Grover rubber mat ) not touching another file and never place anything on top of them in one of my tool chest.
Merhaba! 🙏😊
Idea being that the acid actually thins down the edges of the individual ridges on the file making them sharp again? Certainly cleaning always helps a dirty or rusty file, but sharpen it? I think a microscopic examination would be required to tell the truth of it

When I saw the click bait in the title of "how to" "sharpen a file" & "razor sharp" I thought I better check into the comments. Those words have meanings and many of this type of video results in a Russian fellow cleaning an old dull file making it look nice but essentially perform no different to a rusty ol worn file. This is just another one of those videos 😢. Stop it, get some help. Do people even know what razor sharp even IS? 🤦♂️You can have file re-sharpened by file manufactures but Ive yet to see ANYone fobit at home. So for this video 0:06s in, I'm gonna have to exercise my right to hit the dislike button 😮

I guess this tuber never heard of a file card and brush. Files become less efficient when the spaces between their teeth get filled with material. File brushes are designed to remove this. Iron rust is very soft and easy to brush away. What can gum up a file and require acid are soft metals like copper that haven't yet oxidized. .

Looks good to me though👌
A machnists told me over 50 years ago the way to sharpen a file is to place it in a container of acid. Never told me how long. Have 40 to 60 year old files from 4 to 10" long still fairly sharp because I store them on pulley lagging ( Grover rubber mat ) not touching another file and never place anything on top of them in one of my tool chest.

Idea being that the acid actually thins down the edges of the individual ridges on the file making them sharp again? Certainly cleaning always helps a dirty or rusty file, but sharpen it? I think a microscopic examination would be required to tell the truth of it

Brass is a better alternative to copper in the last stage of sharpening.
Do the job properly , place in side a pipe with ends blocked so the file is entirely cleaned

To keep files safe just put them in a filing cabinet, also use toothpaste to clean them because it works for my teeth. ?

If you have a "FileCard" your file will never get "loaded up" & get "dull" as claimed in this clickbait. This from a Journeyman Machinist👍
I use my wire wheel of my bench grinder
Just surprised a file card didn't come into play anywhere here.
I guess this tuber never heard of a file card and brush. Files become less efficient when the spaces between their teeth get filled with material. File brushes are designed to remove this. Iron rust is very soft and easy to brush away. What can gum up a file and require acid are soft metals like copper that haven't yet oxidized. .

It's cheaper to buy a new file... Don't get people to waste their money and time
