      I agree, what a load of rubbish and time, A good honing guide can be bought that takes quarter inch to two inch chisels plus some plane blades. also the man does not seem to know that you have two angles to a blade, the grinding angle then the sharpening angle. Total waste of time.

    My old dad was a superb chippy, he taught me with an oilstone and an old leather belt. You could have SHAVED with his chisels, like straight razors! He even sharpened his drills by hand, the skills that man had were amazing to me. I never mastered drills sadly.

    • @richardmccann9293
      @richardmccann9293 2 месяца назад

      My dad taught me the same. I just use a wetstone like in the video (but with a store bought chisel block instead of making it out of wood) and then scrape it off afterwards on a piece of leather. Much faster and less messy than using toothpaste and an old battery :)

    • @mattb2
      @mattb2 5 месяцев назад +9

      She doesn’t mean an angle on one side and a different angle on the back 🙄. Traditionally chisels are sharpened at two angles but have a look at Paul Sellers style. He sharpens at one angle and works great 👍

    I thought everyone knew about the two bevels on a chisel??? I knew it in shop class in 1964 and it has worked excellently for me since then through hundreds of chisels of various sizes......

  • @miket2120
    @miket2120 5 месяцев назад +34

    You don't need to use a battery to strop the chisel. Get a old leather belt and lay it on it's face. Then add the toothpaste or cleanser with water to the leather and pull the chisel edge across the leather.
    It looks like there is a double bevel on the chisel: an angled edge on both sides. While this is okay for rough work, it means more work being done for accurate use, compensating for the chisel wanting to move upward in the cut. The bottom of the chisel needs to be absolutely flat, hopefully with a little hollow area about 1cm from the tip.

Spend pennies on a proper honing jig or 30 mins making a wooden honing jig that will load your oil stone with wood fibres, and limit the bearing surface when you remove the burr. i believe any small piece of wood with a triangular shape thick enough will allow the chisel to have the correct drop to accommodate the chisels own angle to the stone ,some sooner than later....if too steep , just take some off from the bottom of triangular piece , also in a triangular shape , tip of triangular shape to the front...is that more complicated to imagine 😂

    The flat of the chisel should never be honed . Only the breifest pull back to remove any fine birrs after honing the edge bevel . That wedge to hone the angle with , will clog up the pores of the sharpening stone
