What an awesome episode to watch! Darlene has been such an inspiration in my own life. I grew up singing her songs in church, leading them as a worship leader, and then teaching how to play them here on RUclips :). I loved hearing the mention of Delirious? - they have been extremely influential in my life as well. As a regular viewer of TPS (and owner of a GigRig G3S), this was so cool to see on the show.
We are pretty big fans of church/worship guitar tone :). Dan - I also wanted to say thank you for including a link to our website in the description of this video. Very much appreciated, and an honor.

As a worship leader and guitar player there is SO MUCH good stuff here. The philosophy and reason for the worship band is a huge part of the music. And Darlene, you’re not alone on getting distracted in worship by trying to keep the band together when they’re not confident. I get so easily distracted leading by a lot of things, and that is definitely one of them. Great stuff! Thanks Dan for doing this and facilitating this resource!

So glad that you spent the time on listening and attending to the purpose of the music in church. Many times there is an obsession with getting the right tone or effect, but knowing how and when to use it is of primary importance.
Having led music for the last 22 years I have seen so many musicians lose sight of that.
For church guitarists (acoustic or electric). I recommend first dialing in your “always on” tone and play for a few weeks with only that. Then think of all other pedals as “expression pedals” each one helps you express something different, think of your reverb as peaceful, and find the setting that best reflects that, then try to find the joy setting.
Well done! Thank you so much.

Dan!!!! Oh my. You were already awesome but you’re Darlene’s bro… that’s a new level. Seriously though…
I grew up in church and also grew up loving blues and Clapton and Skynyrd etc. Every male in my family is a minister but I just wanted to play the Clapton type music or sound in church. Her style of music opened up that door. But what she said at min 27 is the #1 issue still. On all the worship guitar channels everyone tries to play the exact sound and even talk about how they don’t have the same guitar or amp as they used in the track. I’m always saying to use what you got and play what you feel. Doing that is the blues of worship… yes while supporting the purpose as she described. So awesome. So thankful you did this episode. So cool!

There is a lot a cliches about Worship music that just aren’t true. While most songs are not technically challenging, your musicality will be tested. As far as tones, my sound hasn’t changed much from when I was all about heavy noise in the 90s. My in-ears frequently sounds like I’m Kevin Shields in My Bloody Valentine. 😄

This was fascinating and enchanting. Thanks Dan! My love of music was forged in Church in the least rock and roll way possible - as a Choirboy! However, once the early 90s kicked in and writers like Graham Kendrick and others started introducing guitar into worship music, I got the opportunity to play my guitar in a few worship bands. My best memory of that time was hearing my humble Tanglewood electro-acoustic guitar through every speaker on every pillar of Rochester Cathedral. Church music in many forms still moves me, and without the foundation of choral singing and understanding harmony, I don't think I'd have the ear and instinct I do now.

Really enjoyed this. I'm not a worship player or attendee and have little interest in the music, albeit I quite like a lot of the tones that seem to be common in P&W. Even without that connection to the material, it's fascinating to hear how these songs are structured, the use of dynamics, how they keep from making the sound crowded. Very informative!

Dan, I watch each and every episode of TPS from my home here in Austin, Texas. Often times, I subject my mostly non- musical wife to some episodes. When I saw the caption for this episode, I happened to mention to my wife that your sister, a well known worship leader, was part of the show. She immediately said, you mean the Darlene that I know? Absolutely! Cheers! again for such a great episode! You guys are THE best!

How have I been watching TPS and playing worship guitar for 10 years and had NO IDEA that Dan and Darlene were related?!??!

    • @gohjohan
      @gohjohan 2 месяца назад

I think none of us did because Darlene is from Australia and TPS is in UK, we outsiders had NO idea.

Dan, an amazing episode and thank you so much for doing a show around worship music.
Darlene and David, thank you for sharing your knowledge and gifts here.
I’ve found this to be a blessing, both with some validation to my approach and brand new ideas.

I had been waiting to watch this episode and excited for the title. However, a couple minutes in and I’m gobsmacked to find out that Dan and Darlene are siblings. Two amazing people with such wonderful spirits. God Bless You both !! (Was excited to hear Martin Smith mentioned as well in the episode)

Brilliant! Great to hear them describing guitar for worship - being humble and remembering the reason you're there is God, is it. Great interview, thanks.

Oh my hat and scarf I’ve just heard two of my favourite people are related!! Wow. Been listening to Darlene since I was a kid and play for Hillsongs Birmingham so I’m playing her songs every week! Sorry Dan I’m one of those been asking all those reverb /delay questions over the years for P&W, I didn’t realise you had the inside scoop on all the actual pedal settings Guitarists for Darlene like The “Droff” Reuben Morgan etc were actually using!
What a brilliant episode! Thanks so much for putting this out!

That was wonderful on all levels. ALL musicians in all situations should learn from what Darlene said. Probably one of the most valuable lessons ever discussed and one of the best TPS videos ever. Ending on Amazing Grace was perfect

Wild. I’ve often wondered if there were more guitarists playing in bars on Saturday night or in churches on Sunday morning. Thanks for this.

The answer of course is more guitars in church on Sunday by a large margin.

Oh wow! Darlene Zschech is your sister?! Growing up in the old AOG churches in Adelaide in the '80s and '90s, Darlene was a massive part of the movement that led to young guitarists like me actually finding a place in church bands. Playing at a Youth Alive rally was, up until that point, the absolute highlight of my musical journey. My faith journey took a different path later, and I'm quite cynical about how contrived and directed worship music is, but I can appreciate amazing musicianship and will be forever grateful for people like Darlene, Steve Grace, Geoff Bullock, and numerous others who gave me the conviction to keep doing what I was doing in those formative years.

Awww, Dan. What a beautiful thing. And a happy moment for you. Darla's emphasis on humility and purpose could well be the refresher all of we would be musicians must revisit over and over again. I'd love to hear her speak more on "music theory", which is to say, not the stuff around chords and inversions, but the spirit of it. Dan, you sure have been on quite the roll lately; I hope your heart is brimming!

OMG! Mind totally blown. Love the family picture. That was sweet. As Darlene spoke, you can see the similar mannerisms as Dan - definitely related. Hillsongs means so much to me. Have all their early CDs, VCR tapes, and DVDs. "Blessed" is probably my favorite worship CD/DVD. No better singer/worship leader than Darlene. She is amazing. The worship team is equally awesome! Thanks, Dan. You are the man!!!
