About the clamp gripping the phone's edges, my Keelead gimbal had the same issue holding my Samsung J1 (old, thick). I pulled the two rubber inserts out of the clamp's metal end-pieces and reversed them left to right. That reversed the angle of the taper into which the phone wants to sit. There's self-adhesive tape on the rubbers so they just stuck back into their new positions. I didn't change the rubber piece which holds the end of the phone. On my gimbal, it's not symetrical so not conducive to reversing.
Sounds like android vs ios. I don't need the extra (mostly useless) functions, all I need is a better experience. Better app interface and better handle feeling are the key points for me to chose OSMO 2
I agree 360 is cool but from a mechanical view point tend to breakdown more often for some reason. I'm not sure why but that has been my experience with the this model (twice)
I've got mine from local computer/electronic store for $79 two years ago. Gimble is not butter smooth, but excellent for the price I paid. I use on my Gopro 4 back then.
I have both, the Smooth Q and the Osmo 2. Honestly to me both are amazing gimbals for the price. Even the Evo shift (which is 100% similar to the smooth Q). Both gimbals are very responsive and does the job very well, very buttery images (if you know how to use it correctly). I tried both with iphone, Samsung and even gopros. It all comes down really to your own preference and taste, the grip, the app etc. Great review though.
I have the Zhiyun Crane v2 and LOVE it. Was thinking about the Osmo Mobile 2 for my phone but the lack of 360° just made me lean towards the Smooth Q. Thank you for the video, appreciate the straight forward review. Looking forward to more reviews, especially one tied to attachments for the Smooth Q.
Thanks, yes I will be using my Smooth Q next week for some shoots and events and hope to get some cool footage. Any attachements I rig up will be used in a future video and/or on my instagram for tech stuff at instagram.com/netcruzertech
Yeah, it surprises me how many reviews don’t mention or even notice the 360 pan! Also many of the DJI videos make no mention about the limited range of rotation. I had an OSMO Mobile last year and that was my biggest disappointment with it.
Triple press the mode button on smooth q can go to selfie mode where the gimbal will rotate 180 degree. The DJI osmo mobile triple press the mode button also change go to selfie mode but it do not rotate the gimbal but changing the back camera to front camera.
Which proves that it's not important to a large number of users or potential users. It's really good that you wanted 360 and can get it with the Smooth but lets be realistic and not try to make that an all defining point of a gimbal. Not many would be willing to trade that for the many advantages of the Osmo so we can't overlook that. Your video should be titled "Why YOU think it's better instead of coming off like there would be some factual evidence to support it which there wasn't it was an opinion based on your requirement not performance.
Thank you so much for this video! Totally new to gimbals and came to comparing these two, you've sold me on the smooth q and taught me so much more about what it can do! 360 freedom with object tracking totally did it for me.
Superb review. Have been frustrated by the DJI OSMO Mobile' s erratic connectivity issue. I have the big brother (Crane 2), so will be changing to the DJI OSMO Mobile to the Smooth Q....or 3
It's working fine with ANDROID as well ....I have been using it with my new Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and the videos are so stabilizing ...I tried Hyperlapse, Timelapse, M Timelapse, Slow motion and also super slowmotion, Panaromic photos....Samsung Galaxy Note 9 + DJI Osmo Mobile 2 = Ultimate videos...
Been watching reviews upon reviews about which gimble I want for roughly £100-130 max spend and I think I'll go for the Smooth Q, the 360 rotation is a major factor for me which I'm gutted the Osmo 2 doesn't have even tho the Osmo has a better tracking. But I know you can edit the motors to make the smooth Q faster.
Thank you for your time. You help me out quite a lot just waiting for mine to get to my shop. Then I will be using for my Facebook shop page. Then on to youtube later.
Direct to a smartphone you need a mic that uses TRRS connection (or lightning/Bluetooth). I use a rode videomic me with mine. I have videos about external microphones for gimbals.
Great video thanks for the review, I purchased the Smooth Q to use with my iPhone 8 Plus and Gopro Hero 5 Black in vietnam, Smooth Q works well with both devices, Thanks again for the video review.
I couldn’t get the tracking to work on my phone. I thought you just tapped on the screen. I couldn’t find any info on it any where. Thanks for the vid.
Hi do you have a tutorial on how to setup remote mode? I tried to setup remote mode where I can use my iPad to control the functions of the phone and gimble.
Also, what do you know about microphones and how to incorporate them into this set up? I am thinking that a wireless mic might be the ticket, will use more phone juice, thus depleting battery further.....the ability to charge while recording is even more important. Thank you so much!
Any suggestion how to make go around 360? lets say I place it in a table and want to shoot a video of the people sitting around it. is it possible? is any pre loaded mode?tks
I've actually seen one or two comparisons on RUclips and although for 99 bucks or so this is a great bargain basement gimbal to be sure, I absolutely noticed that the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 was in four or five different tests always smoother than the Smooth Q. But again for the price point (I guess especially if you can get one between $50 and $70 used) is hard to beat. But I don't feel that the quality is as good as the DJI
Great and thorough review! How do you feel about using it with your Android phone vs your iPhone. I would like to know because I only have an Android phone and wondering if it's worth buying given that some features don't work as well.
I like the Smooth Q because most of the features work without using their app. So most of the time, I'm using the phone's native camera app on the Q and it works better. Only use ZhiYun Play when you need object tracking or motion timelapse, etc. some special feature.
Great video. You really made me think because I am about to purchase an Osmo 2 for use with Filmic Pro, but you really show shame good reasons why I should go with this instead. 2 questions if i may: 1. Can this gimbal be used with Filmic Pro? And 2. Can you please put a link to that charging cable you purchased? Thanks again. I’m a new subscriber!
1 - Gimbal can be used in tandem with Filmic Pro but it won't pair via bluetooth or change the modes of gimbal in their app like with the DJI. (I've done that Filmic/DJI pair and it wasn't that useful to me, I found it easier to change modes on the gimbal and app separately). 2 - Charging cable links are USA: amzn.to/2m51zhz CANADA: amzn.to/2mbRa3X
how long do you have smooth q ? do you have osmo 2 ? 1. smooth q will tint to left in time, you will have to do all the time calibration which not working always. 2. app from zhiyun vs dji is like windows XP vs new macOS :| crashing all the time. 3. quality of smooth q is funny, one of engines start working bad after 1 week (using very careful and read all advices and manuals)
Thank for this review ! very glad to see this ! Was going to bounce on the new DJI then I see your video. Question for you -- how come it seems that you must always use the software that is built into the gimbal. Is it not possible to just turn on your iPhone and start recording a video ( like it's not connected in the gimbal ) but have the gimbal working with the phone to keep it sturdy ? ( also how does the phone connect to the gimbal software ) I've watched 4 videos now and nobody has mentioned this. Thanks for your time !
Yes you can do that. Gimbal will keep it steady without using the software. You won’t be able to use record buttons or fancy features. Mode switching and joystick works always.
I have a question.. Iknow it has past a long time but I just got mine now... I have it well balanced but when I use it upwards, in straight up position it shows the handle on the right bottom corner... does it have to be always on the horizontal position?
Hi, Great video!!!! Have some questions. 1) I have a standard IP6.....can't afford an upgrade. Will this work well? 2) Can I attached a lav mic to the phone while in the gimball? 3) When using this app, I assume you don't need anything like ProShot app to help with settings? Your help would be most appreciated. Thanks!
1 - It should but I have not tested on anything other than iP6S and LG G6. 2- Yes since you have iPhone 6 the headphone jack is accessible while in the gimbal. I've used my 6S with an external mic. I'll eventually get a video out about that and more. 3 - Gimbal settings are all within ZY Play. When you save them they save to the gimal, so then you can use those settings while using other software, like native camera app of the phone.
Hi, love yours videos: I do not know much about types of cell phones and I am in a Budget, Could you please recommend a cheap cell phone, smart, android or whatever that I can buy with this device. I am not planing to use the phone as areal cell phone but just as camcorder device. I got a Samsung Galaxy Light Model GH-T 399N Android Ver 4.42 ( Excellent Video Taken ) But I do not know if it may work with this device ? ..... Thanks very much on any Input you may give me..... Frankie
How can you say it's better than the OSMO Mobile 2 when you didn't really compare it with the OSMO Mobile 2. All I can see that you used to own a OSMO mobile 1.
I explain why I think it’s better. Both are smarthone gimbals in the same price range. SMOOTH Q can do 360 rotation and roll axis, Osmo cannot. Hense it’s better to me and why I titled that way.
I have some technical questions related to Rc can I stick this gimbal with my Rc remote and turn on the object tracking thing so the gimbal can capture the fast moving Rc at 70 km
Fast moving small objects is easily lost by the tracking. It sometimes works, but not at those high of speeds. I have some videos on my channel from last year testing DJI active track on osmo mobile 1.
I have the Smooth Q and ordered the Osmo mobile 2. The Smooth Q is better at certain things, but here are the reasons why I think the Osmo mobile 2 is better: 1. The zoom is way smoother and easier to use 2. You can change the tilt on the follow mode, which the Smooth Q can't for some reason. Why the Smooth Q is better: 1. You can control it with a remote
You can change tilt in follow mode too, if you meant pan then yes for some reason you can't joystick pan in follow mode on Smooth Q. Just twist the handle to do that.
Sorry, I forgot Zhiyun has a different naming convention for the different modes. Zhiyun calls the follow mode "full mode". In full mode, the tilt can't be adjusted. You have to move your hand. I don't really like this. On the Osmo Mobile, you can adjust the tilt in this mode. So you can have your gimbal at an angle and it will still your hand where ever it moves.
Hi Netcruzer! Great video. Say, I have the Smooth Q; love it! However, as far as charging my iPhone7plus whilst I am recording/using the gimbel, I am having an issue. I too will need to purchase a 90 degree lightening cable as I only have the one central port (no other ports of any kind). When I pull my phone out just a bit to accommodate this sort of cable, my phone gets unbalanced and it continues to be unbalanced once turned on. My extension arm is extended as far as it can go. This is really a pretty important feature to be able to access, because as you know, the phone battery gets so depleted in this sort of work. Other videos I have viewed have eluded to having to actually have "down time" to remove the phone from gimbel and charge; seems counter productive to me! Is there a trick that you know of?
Are you saying that even with a 90 degree lightning cable the iPhone 7 plus won't balance? If that's the case you'd have to add some counterbalance weight to the other side. If you want to see more about cables and mics I have this video: ruclips.net/video/V4CjayYl3ZI/видео.html
Honestly have not actually tried the 90 degree cable yet; I did just position the phone in the cradle to accommodate where it would go. Phone/Stabilizer immediately listed to the left, even when turned on. My phone is NOT super large (iphone7plus). Maybe I am overlooking something in the balance department. As I mentioned, the arm is extended as far out as it can go. Are you aware of counterbalance weights that are available for purchase for this stabilizer? Or maybe I just need to adjust something that I already have. I see your "fuzzy mic" that you use...looks great and I will check it out. One way that I will be using this get up is to have someone recording on the Gimbel while I am performing gardening tasks; outside of course. So, it will be important to be able to get good audio from a distance. Have you any experience with a wireless mic? It would indeed use more Bluetooth juice so battery replenishment would be key. Thanks so much!
counterbalance would be cheapest as DIY with stick or clip on weights, but some companies like MOMENT do sell them as counterbalance for their iPhone lenses. I have not tried a wireless mic. It may be cheaper and easier to use a lav mic on you recording to a separate device and then sync up the video/audio in editing.
Okay stupid question you did and saw the z y camera into Android phone right. did you ever notice number permissions it was wanting . Why does a cell phone gimbal want your phone book information and then it was your GPS info
It's funny how many gimbals have come out since and the smooth Q is just still too smooth lol. I have a smooth Q and was thinking of getting the new smooth 4 just to have as a secondary unit but I'm already starting to rethink that lol. The smooth Q is just TOO GOOD! And I'm using a Galaxy S7 *flat* And i use additional lenses with it and have to use a counterweight and it all works very well with the smooth Q.
I want to try a Smooth 4 but I’m quite disappointed that the 360 rotation and joystick is not on the new one. Also all those buttons and wheels only work in their ZY play app, which is buggy on iOS and just bad on Android. I mostly use my Smooth Q stand-alone without their app. Works great!
kingboy i recently brushed up on the app and its been a pinch refined but i still cant seem to find the setting for the 4k 30fps setting. I can only do 1080p 30fps. I cant figure out why. My S7 records in 4k 30fps. But honestly i hardly use the ZY Play app. I use FiLMiC Pro for settings. I do however have to touch my phone to get things done. The downfall of not using the app. I'm trying to find a Bluetooth remote to control the phone without touching. Or see if i can use the Zhiyun Remote. I do plan on possibly buying the NOTE 9 when it comes out. I suppose a newer phone could help. I love my S7 tho so im gonna keep it.
I took mine back and exchanged it for the osmo 2. IMHO it’s not as stable or responsive as the osmo 2. The app is useless and I’m constantly needing calibrate the gimbal. Also the buttons are too loud and the zoom is step by step zoom. Not to take away from your review but this device didn’t cut it for me
If you use Filmic Pro....DJI Mobile 1 was good for that but sadly the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 does not control Filmic Pro at least yet...so Smooth Q was my choice.
I also bought filmic pro when I had osmo mobile 1. I find filmic hard to use in general, sure it’s powerful but not intuitive IMO. I’ve gotten better results from Movie Pro. The gimbal connect feature didn’t help me much on filmic.
I will have to try Movie Pro.....I'm finding that Filmic Pro isn't the easiest to use on the fly. I don't see me changing settings while actively recording with the gimbal now that I think about it. Thanks for the video.

App is very similar between both. Smooth Q has 360 pan and roll axis control which allow more creative freedom. Check out my modes video.
Great informative video. I purchased mine used on market place and it didn't come with instructions so this was very helpful.
I agree 360 is cool but from a mechanical view point tend to breakdown more often for some reason. I'm not sure why but that has been my experience with the this model (twice)

Thank you so much for this video !!! I just got the smooth Q today and trying to learn about it and this was tgge best video! Love from Nigeria
Totally agree, Smooth Q rocks. It is still working great for me.
Best video yet! I just pick up mine at best buy for $99!! I didn't know it did a 360 turn! Thanks

what external microphone will attach to this set up?

Hi do you have a tutorial on how to setup remote mode? I tried to setup remote mode where I can use my iPad to control the functions of the phone and gimble.
Nice a very detailed review that I think covers all the info on this gimble.
i bought one too not long ago and its great to use

Hi, I wanna buy this gimbal but I have concern that it can hand carry on the plan or not ? Can you advise me something. Thanks.
My friend what a fantastic easy to use review, am definitely going to get one of these, thank you so much for sharing, great tutorial video 👍😁👍
Hi, how do you change the tracking mode speed of the gimbal so it tracks faster like the dji osmo
Great video. I understood that WT means W = wide; T = Telephoto (zoom control on most camcorders)

Hi,
Great video!!!!
When you save them they save to the gimal, so then you can use those settings while using other software, like native camera app of the phone.
Here's my EXTERNAL MIC SETUP video. I'm showing a shotgun mic but it would work with a TRRS lav mic also. ruclips.net/video/V4CjayYl3ZI/видео.html
really nice review and very helpful man!!!!
Does it rotate a full 360 degrees?
I love your little Landrover Defender! Where did you get it?
I saw that you had some problems with your phone size. I guess a V20 with a case will be impossible to be mounted on the smooth q then?
that Jeep action scene was legit
How did you do to make a face tracking work? I couldn’t get my work! Thank you
There is a little icon you have to click to enable it. Watch what I press just before I select the object to track on screen.

How can you say it's better than the OSMO Mobile 2 when you didn't really compare it with the OSMO Mobile 2. All I can see that you used to own a OSMO mobile 1.
360 pan makes it better. None of the OSMO mobiles can do that.
I don't think it's a fair thing to say, because there is also something that OSMO has that ZY doesn't.
Birds can fly, and humans cannot, does that make birds superior than human? I don't think so.
All I'm saying is that based on your review, your video title is highly misleading.
I explain why I think it’s better. Both are smarthone gimbals in the same price range. SMOOTH Q can do 360 rotation and roll axis, Osmo cannot. Hense it’s better to me and why I titled that way.
can this be using in vertical ?
Thank you, very nice video!
The body of your description mentioned iPhone. Does this only work with iPhone?
does it fit Samsung S9plus android phone?
I have some technical questions related to Rc can I stick this gimbal with my Rc remote and turn on the object tracking thing so the gimbal can capture the fast moving Rc at 70 km
Fast moving small objects is easily lost by the tracking. It sometimes works, but not at those high of speeds. I have some videos on my channel from last year testing DJI active track on osmo mobile 1.
I have this kind of gimbal, but why keep on falling down.i adjust but still my phone is facing down.not in valance.any suggestions
Im going for the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 because it is half the weight, I would think that makes a huge difference.
I have a Smooth Q. Where did you get that right angle iPhone to USB wire that you show in the video? I cannot seam to find one. Thanks.
I have a reply with links in this comments section. Also see my smooth Q external mic video which has all the links to cables.
Very nice gizmo. I may get one eventually.
It is best bang for buck phone gimbal right now. Has all the features I wanted, and costs 1/3 of what I paid for an OSMO Mobile last year.
I have the Smooth Q and ordered the Osmo mobile 2. The Smooth Q is better at certain things, but here are the reasons why I think the Osmo mobile 2 is better:
1. The zoom is way smoother and easier to use
2. You can change the tilt on the follow mode, which the Smooth Q can't for some reason.
Why the Smooth Q is better:
I’ve used both and the Smooth Q doesn’t active track as reliably and is not compatible with Filmic Pro.
Valid points. Does osmo
Mobile 2 work in filmic now? Last I checked only mobile 1 did.
Loving the video review doood
Will it work for the Samsung S9
It may be cheaper and easier to use a lav mic on you recording to a separate device and then sync up the video/audio in editing.
thank you for this!
you can do better with the video, but overall fantastic overview of the product!
I'm always trying to improve my video/audio quality without breaking the bank. Glad you enjoyed the content!
Great review. Really considering this gimbal, do you know if it will support the iPhone 8 Plus?
It will. Maybe not with a big bulky case but definitely will naked.
Netcruzer RC TECH CARS great thank you for the response.
subbed.. love the video.. i have heard tho that this product is no good for iphones.. the stable settings?? can you confirm this??
All the gimbals can cause micro jitters in phones with OIS cameras. The ZY play app has a smooth video stabilization setting to help with this.
I have a Rode Me microphone. Will it work with this gimbal?
Using the Q with an action-cam, just press the on-off button three times and the Q will spin 180 degrees and point in the right direction.
And I'm using a Galaxy S7 *flat*
And i use additional lenses with it and have to use a counterweight and it all works very well with the smooth Q.
Netcruzer RC TECH CARS all reasons why i held back on getting it also. Smooth Q is still great. What about FreeFly's Movi Cinema Robot?
How's the Android app now,are some of the features found on its iOS counterpart been updated? seem to be the only thing holding me back to buy
kingboy i recently brushed up on the app and its been a pinch refined but i still cant seem to find the setting for the 4k 30fps setting.
Johnold13 I was just on their RUclips page and apparently support for the Filmic pro app is in the works which is great ,thanks 👍
Hi, Thanks for the review! Where did you get the iPhone cable?
amzn.to/2ENBoac choose whatever style has the lowest right angle plug offset that would work best. Lots of options.
Thanks! :)
So as you can put action camin you dont neet to get the actioncam converter?
Yeah you can just make something out of some foam if needed to make your camera fit better. You don't need those big converter plates.
Also is their one of these that do all phone. Action cam and normal camea like a canon etc?
This can work for small elph style Canon. Anything bigger and you need a ZhiYun crane.
Netcruzer RC TECH CARS thankyou
great review
I take it, there's no hot shoe on the mount?
Maybe yoi have the object too close to the camera and holding it with your arm coming away from the view to have it tracked correctly
Where did you get the remote controlled car.....any links....me and my son want it lol!
The RC is a Traxxas TRX-4 Defender - amzn.to/2sCibDy. If you are not in USA let me know.
I'm in USA, and thank you!
Nice video bro
I took mine back and exchanged it for the osmo 2. IMHO it’s not as stable or responsive as the osmo 2. The app is useless and I’m constantly needing calibrate the gimbal. Also the buttons are too loud and the zoom is step by step zoom. Not to take away from your review but this device didn’t cut it for me
Anyone know if the smooth 4 has the 360 rotation?
WHAT there is no 2K 24 FPS? How am I supposed to record cinematic? Can I use a different app? Please reply.
Extatic Music either don’t use the app or make it 24fps in post
The Smooth-Q app for Android is awful. Many bugs makes me feel very angry sometime.
Seems to plague most of the gimbal apps. Moza Mini-Mi also has Android app issues and inconsistencies compared to iOS.
Can you rotate it 360°?!
Just announced support for DJI Mobile 2
what rc are you using?
Traxxas TRX4. Link in the description.
Does the app shoot raw?
No RAW support in ZY Play that I could find. I don't think DJI GO does that either but could be wrong.
Great review. I’ve been waiting for the Osmo mobile 2 for nothing. Thanks!
Crazypole .
its bs my smooth q over HEATS after 90-100 secs on its roll axis.
exactly why OM2 doesn't have the roll feature 🤣
Nice video👍👍🎥
