- I’ve had C-Log installed on my 5D Mark IV for a while now and have been waiting impatiently to test it out! So last week we wrote and shot a short film primarily to work with the 4K C-Log functionality of the 5DMarkIV and to see what it was like, and today we are reviewing the pro’s and con’s of C-log and whether we think it is worth it.

Hey Kai, thanks for this video. Do you find that processing/editing the raw video files from the 5D MIV are just largely unbearable due to the writing file type and size. I'm trying to decide whether or not purchase one within in the next month or so. Thanks in advance.

Hello Kai. Thanks for the useful video. Do you know if this C-LOG update reduces sensor crop in 4K mode from x1.7 to x1.27? Some web-sources provides this kind of information and I just want to make sure.
Thanks for this video :-) I will have C-log installed on my 5D next week. But now come to realise that the Lee 4 stops ND filter that i bought in order to change my Depth of field outside might be the wrong choice because i bought it based on shooting in 100 ISO. Any thought about differences between shooting in 100 versus 400 ISO in C-Log?
Would adding log be valuable for beginner videographers? Or would it be something to hold off on until you get more experience?

Hey Kai. Great video, just got the C-Log upgrade myseld. Quick question, how do you expose your scene when using C-Log? I have heard people say use a middle grey card and other say overexpose by 1 stop. Whats your approach?
Great question David. I normally follow the +1 approach on exposure and it seems to work well. Also helps to have the vivid assist on. Enjoy!
One thing he could have done better in his examples is avoid clipping highlights. Overexposing is fine if you don't clip your highlights...
The most strange thing in those videos about c-log is that everybody looks for the difference between c-log and no c-log videos, but getting (for some reason I can't explain) the c-log flat vs c-log graded instead

I do not see any difference per this video. You can shoot normal and color grade it just like that.

Just got mine done and didn't enjoy the bill. But still unsure if it was a good move. Waiting for a project to test it on. For sure I doubt clients will care.

Great question Brett - I always over expose with C-log - especially after I released a few videos that people said looked incredibly dark 😅

Thanks for the question Vino, this is because it is not a free option on the 5DMarkIV you have to go to a Canon dealer to get it installed for a fee.
Hey Kai! i've got a Mark 4 but im usually shoot in 1080! Would the c-log work aswell when im recording in 1080 or its only for 4k?

Hey Kai, so if you get Canon Log installed on a Mark iV does it replace your existing color profiles so you can only use Canon Log? Will you still have standard, portrait, landscape, etc?
You will still have all the profiles - it just unlocks the canon log profile which is greyed out.
With the C-log installed will it output a C-log stream from the HDMI output? So I can record on an external recorder like the Atomos Ninja V?
Yes. Even if you have the view assist on the image coming out the hdmi will clog.
PS Do you have a guide for how large the file seizes are? eg 30 minutes 100gb etc? I know this is dependant on the subject being filmed but a guide?

@@KaiCreative I'm 4 months late on this comment but I just used their service, dropped it off 4:30pm yesterday, they close at 5:30pm, and they had it finished for me to pick up 10am this morning. Super quick service. Fixation is the way. Easy walk from Oval Northern line station.

I installed the "EOS HD C-Log" on my 5D Mark IV's when I first bought the cameras. Canon C-Log was not yet available for the 5DIV at the time. I've been getting pretty good results but not sure if the real Canon C-Log will be that much better to go ahead and send my cameras to get it installed. I believe the real Canon C-Log is better, but by how much. Does it blow the eoshd c-log version out the water or is just a little bit better? ? ? I haven't seen any convincing videos that show it being dramatically better than the eoshd c-log
Hi Marty, Thanks for your comment! I've only had it on my camera for a couple of months, but have been using it extensively. The picture setting that I was using before was a custom neutral setting. So compared to that C-Log is simply amazing! I'm not sure how it compares to the EOSHD C-Log profile, but I've watched a couple of videos in particular one by
'Carlos Quintero - Canon 5D Mark IV CLog Upgrade vs EOSHD CLog vs James Miller CLog Picture Profiles blog' where he does some direct in depth comparisons and comes up with some really interesting results in favour of the Paid C-Log. I'd definitely recommend it. (:

Kai I am a subscriber and followers of your content. I am looking to progress my photo and video journey. I use entry level cameras SL2 and m50. I came across a deal on 5d iv for under the price of eos rp. I’m skeptical bc of the 4K size everyone complains about. I do a bit of everything landscape,portrait and video. Your thoughts? Is the price just to hard to pass up?
Thanks for your support and question Ernesto - I think the big question you should be asking here is what is the condition of the camera you are looking to buy - check the camera actuations- that will help guide you in knowing whether this is a good deal or not - buying a car that looks good with a mileage of 200K means it won’t last much longer on the roads- so I’d suggest doing your homework. For the 5Dmark IV actuations count I believe is about 150K before a recommended shutter replacement :) hope it helps.

My problem with the log stuff for filming is...COMPRESSION. When you save to a compressed file format, such as H.264 or MJPEG - you are throwing data way. In terms of image quality - both cinestyle and c-log in such formats, in my mind and from experience, are not a great choice, since now instead of using all the available colors to encode your image - you're only limiting that image to a narrow band of luminance/color that the log/cinestyle produces. What that results in is poor gradation and blockiness when you "extend" that range back in post. Sure, it looks "wow" when you do it on the screen, but from a technical perspective it really only works well with lossless compression, not lossy. At that point you're technically better off in using a picture style that just has its contrast and saturation low enough that you don't lose data, but high enough that you don't end up wasting potential color space like you clearly did with the c-log. The footage will end up with better gradients that way.
Again, this does not apply to lossless compression and raw files - those will look great, provided you don't screw up the exposure and you know what data the sensor can store well before it clips (older cams prioritize highlights, newer ones prioritize shadows).

Like I've said before we shot the two scenes in under an hour each. There are many talented filmmakers out there that could do a way better job, but given the time constraints and available resources I'm quite happy with how it turned out. (:
