I have two of them and I agree with you that the video quality is absolutely incredible when you shoot with C-Log and everything else you just mentioned. I make all the cards do exfat, I format the smaller cards in the computer and it works.

Can I ask. What if you're doing an indoor shot with minimal lighting, but you need to let more light in to the camera - would you recommend decreased the shutter speed below 50 or the ISO above 400 to maintain quality?

Hi friend, I hope you well. It been a while. I am using a 5D mark 4 . I have noticed the 50mm 1.4 is very wide on the 5D mark 4 but if you using 6D with the same lens you get exactly 50mm range.
The difference though is not that much but it kind of a pain to get use to

Great video. Just this one clarity, Canon Log doesn't make the camera to shoot 12 bits. It just helps with increasing dynamic range (Stops)

Liza Ramos I’d go for the Rode Videomic Pro +! I often use the older Rode VideoMic Pro and I think in this video I used the Rode NTG2 recorded through my audio interface and synced up later. Hope that helps, thanks for your comment and question Liza!
When shooting 4K would it be possible to use a Ef-s/APsC wide lens if I used and extension tube ,I know you can get third party crop lens with the EF mount but wanted to make use of the gear I have already.
Hi Lewis, mate sorry I missed responding to your question! You can use EF-S lenses but with some restrictions. Check out some of the posts over on dp review to find out more, in particular read brightcolours response www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4160013
I think one of the possible problems with using EF-S glass is that they sit inside the body more, and the mirror of a full frame camera might hit them and get damaged.
Sorry but it's not 12bit colour. Clog is a gamma curve using 8bits optimised for this camera. Same algorithm as the 1dc, c100,300,500. Bits are not generated under a gamma curve.

I stand corrected, it is a logarithmic “gamma curve” as you say but it grabs 13.5 stops on c300 II and the official Canon Video on cLOG on the 5D4 suggests it’s able to give equivalent 12 stops. Michael Drowley yes I used it for around 2 years. Very good camera. Couple of drawbacks but I'm sure you will have fun with it. If it had the 5D AF I would buy another 3

Thank you for this detailed information. I recently shot greenscreen interview footage (which was a mistake in itself, don't ask how I got there...) with a 5D Mk 4 that I borrowed, and I didn't really inform myself before using it. So now I have those hughe files, 1 Minute almost 4GB, and my computer (Gigabyte Aero 15 laptop) can't handle it in After Effects. I was completely overwhelmed to why this had happened, and have since then been trying to learn a lot about Bitrates, Codecs, Containers and so on. I still don't have a clear idea of what my workflow should be with this material... should I compress it down a bit (and how exactly would it keep the best quality), should I work with proxies (but since I edit the greenscreen out in AE, using proxies might not be good because the settings for the proxies would be different from the settings for the full version)... At this point I just wish I used a Sony A7 3 for this shooting xD
I would be really interested in which computer you use that can easily handle the Canons 4K footage. I think back then I had a full spec MacBook Pro 15” 2016 with 16 Gig Ram 4 Gig graphics card. This was the Reciept specs: RFB MBP 15.4/2.5GHZ/16GB/512GB/AMD--AUS. As for best method to use… it’s tricky because I’m not sure your computer will run ProRes proxies or not. I would try proxy them in a 1920x1080 (or equivalent to your 4K size) Pro Res 422 Proxy or LT. Make sure your proxy size is the exact match in terms of aspect ratio and they should (theoretically) match up in post. That may depend though if you are working in a HD or 4K timeline if you are making any translation effects that may get janky when you relink back to the larger footage but if you are working in 4K timeline you can just scale to frame size and it should scale both the proxy and then the original media the same. Ideally you should use the MJPEG captured codec footage in the final exported timeline because you have full 422 colour subsampling. You could also make 422 ProRes 422 master though that will barely loose quality and then dump the MJPEGS if they are hanging up your computer. Test the new ProRes 422 masters and if they still hang things then create your proxies from there. Hopefully that makes sense! Good luck with it, we’ve all been there!!!

Mike, What is your preferred lens with 5DM4 for 4K? especially with a gimbal.
Giri Pillai 16-35 f4.0 IS for gimbal work. I use the 24 f1.4 for 60p Slow motion at 1080p but it’s just that little bit too narrow in 4K.

I really appreciate your videos and the detailed info. Could I ask, I want to send my C-LOG 4k files form my 5d MK4 to my client but they are just too big, what is the best way to reduce the files keeping the best quality possible? Turn it to MP4 in Premier?
You could try converting in media encoder or another conversion software to Quicktime ProRes 422. I'm not sure that would render them smaller. The other option might be ProRes 422 Light which should be a smaller file size. Test it out with a few files and see if it gets them smaller and then use the one that suits you for quality and size.

I get some parasites and deformation on the footage no matter the settings (NTSC, PAL, 25fps, 50fps, 4k...)

Philippe Keller Hi Philippe! No worries, it’s a pleasure to make these videos! I have only heard of currupt files or buffer issues with faulty or imitation cards before. Did you purchase the card recently? If so, where did you buy it from? I have always been able to record full HD continuous to either card full or 30 minute limit in either 4K or HD on my CF 128 GB Lexar Pro 1066x 160MB/s UDMA 7. Also to my 64GB of the same type works flawlessly.

Hey Michael..thanks as ever for your super content. Just have a quick question from your 5Dmk4 days. On my 5d4 when shooting clog (canon upgrade) I get noise patterns in the shadows usually in the form of spontaneous lines that sometimes come and go. Sometimes they’re not there at all. Certain conditions seem to cause them. The log is correctly exposed. It happens from 400iso upwards. It happens on the 2 bodies I own which a roughly 5 numbers apart on the serials. Did you ever experience this?
Paul Michael Hughes Hey Thanks Paul! I did notice it yep, the 5D4 is very sensitive to banding in the blacks when pushing ISO’s higher than 400. A way I used to get around it is shoot at 320 ISO which lowers your native clog dynamic range but only by a fraction. This ISO I found to be the least noisy. I also got banding at 100 ISO but that was gradient banding from shadow to highlight - but again only visible in the blacks/shadows. I’d push the log exposure to over expose a fraction (maybe a stop) and then check that you can recover all highlights and if you can then you should see an improvement with banding in the blacks.
Michael Drowley You’re a star for getting back to me.. I’ve been paranoid my 2 bodies have a sensor fault. Not many people seem to talk about this issue much. Does the EOS R suffer from it too?
Paul Michael Hughes EOS R is much better although I am yet to test it extensively as I did with the 5D4. It’s always a little more tricky working with log on any camera though. When shot correctly though, the 5D4 produces the good in log! Other times I have had to denoise certain clips but it cleans up nicely. Check this out for the EOS R flexibility. Thanks Michael, another great video! My experience of using an SD card for 4k is different to your though. I find it just isn't fast enough and the camera usually stop the recording sometimes after a few seconds. And that's using the SanDisk Extreme PRO 95 MB/s. I'm beginning to wonder if I could have a faulty SD card? 4k works like a dream to the CF card.
We had that problem. It was the SD card not being fast enough, replaced the card with a faster one and and it worked.
I have 4 of the SanDisk Extreme PRO 256GB 95 MB/s SD Cards and they have worked perfectly.
Joel Penn Yeah, you may have a Chinese copy? I’d say get one from Amazon but they’ve unfortunately had quite a number of issues lately with imitation product sellers, so maybe try a verified seller locally in your area. After watching this video, I decided to dig out my old SD cards and sure enough, my 128gb 95 mb/s SanDisk causes the camera to stop recording almost immediately. I tried an old 64gb SD card of the same make and it's recording 4k like a dream. So I think you're right, I was sold a dodgy SanDisk 95mb/s card by Amazon! Thanks so much for your video. Until today, I'd assumed my 5D couldn't write to the SD slot fast enough for 4k recording!

KIMBI CHAH Hey Kimbi, some Mark IVs did not come with cLOG pre installed. If yours is one of those You have to send it to a Canon service centre and have it installed as a paid upgrade.

KIMBI CHAH Hi Kimbi, you can’t load it like a picture profile. It requires a remapping of the sensor via canon service centre. Try the EOSHD or James Miller profiles if you’re just looking for picture profiles

Around 2:50 video gets a bit confusing. You're conflating bit depth with the number of stops of dynamic range that can be achieved. These are two similar but ultimately different concepts. To clarify, the video from the 5D Mark IV at 4K with Canon Log is still 8-bit 4:2:2 (it's 4:2:0 in 1080p) and it offers up to 12 stops of dynamic range.
Thanks for picking that up. I do recall saying bit’s in place of stops in this one and confusing the 2 and as it was brought to my attention days after the video’s release by another viewer and so I followed up with a correction to it in a video a week or so later. But that was a long while ago!
Thanks for your videos! I went out and recorded my first video after watching your 'best settings' for the 5D and used the settings: FHD 59.94P ALL-I as I pretty much knew I wanted to slow mo 80% of the shots... I had my ISO set at 100 all day (outside), shutter speed was locked at 125, and then I just changed the fstop accordingly. Now i've put my footage into premiere I just feel it looks such bad quality? I'm completely new to film but don't understand what i'm doing wrong :( I don't have an ND or C LOG. Any tips would be fantastic.
Why do you think quality is bad? What picture profile did you shoot in? What lens did you use? Maybe you need to sharpen it a bit? You can use unsharp mask in premiere.
@@MichaelDrowley Thanks for replying so quick, really appreciate it! I was using my 35mm f/2 IS USM. I did add some sharpen in post but applied it through the 'creative' tab on an adjustment layer as opposed to unsharp mask... im not sure what that is! It still didn't look how I would have expected. I feel like my clips have no sharpness at all and look rather muddy. Do you think I should switch to 4k and then change back the FHD when I want to add slo mo? gahhh, lots to learn ! hahah!
@@daniellenoakes2103 4K will be better but you have to deal with the crop so you may need to go wider on your lens to say 24mm. You could also upscale it on a 4K timeline to give it a slight bump in quality. Getting a high end look from a 6 year old camera is a challenge but the 5D has a decent image to work with in both 4K and FHD.

You have to send it in to canon for a service upgrade. It will be a small upgrade cost and will take a few weeks.

Yeah, try zoom in the image a tiny bit
If you click the Pan/Crop icon on the clip that you added to the timeline, you can manually type in the resolution you want the clip to be. Make sure to disable the "Lock Aspect Ratio" button on the left side of the Pan/Crop Window first. After that, re-enable the Lock Aspect Ratio button and now you can drag around the size of the video.

Hi i have a question on shooting 4K videos!! Am using 128 Sandisk CF card and every time I shoot it says the movie recorded exceeds the 4g limit and it split in to two files if it’s a minute video or split in to two three and even four files if I shoot more than 4 , 5 minutes !! Why is that??
sanoj varghese Hey Sanoj, it’s because of the formatting of the card in fat32 has a 4GB file size limit so it splits the video file into multiple 4GB files. It won’t drop frames so shouldn’t be a problem. With a 256GB card you will be able to get one large file as the in camera formatting on the larger card is exfat.
So ur telling I can’t use 128gb CF card ??
sanoj varghese You can use them no problem, but it won’t create one continuous file. You’ll need an NLE like Premiere Pro to stitch the files together and export as one piece.
Michael Drowley I just spend 420$ for this card from a camera shop and it says it’s suitable for 4K videos ( the card am using is san disk extreme pro 128 gb 160 MBS udma 7
sanoj varghese As I said, The Card will record 4K continuos up to the 30 minute record limit. It will just split the recording over multiple files on the card.
I have the same sd card as you (128 gb version). And it usually stops recording after 5 minutes or so at 24 fps. Any idea why it does this?
David Makvandi Hey David, the 128GB version I have not tested for continuous writing in 4K but I have had success with a Sony Professional 95MB/S 128 GC card. The 256 GB card formats differently in camera and therefore the files do not split into 4GB chunks. Regardless it should handle the write speeds and the only other thing I can think of is that it is a fake or a copy card. That has been the case with other people.
My only guess would be that the camera is writing slightly faster than the SD card can download, maybe the camera has an internal storage that can back up only a certain amount of footage before it has to stop the recording so that it can catch up writing the footage to the card. Kind of like how if you’re shooting photos in burst on a crappy SD or CF card it can stop your shooting to finish writing all those photos.
@@markanderson7441 Yeah, that's the issue. The write buffer on the camera can't write it to the card quick enough. So the buffer fills up and then recording stops. It's not a problem with the right cards. Only thing I can suggest as I said to David is the card is a fake, OR, the 128 GB Sandisk Extreme Pro doesn't write quick enough, though I know for sure the exact same card in 256 is flawless for the full half an hour record time in 4K.
@@MichaelDrowley Just thought I should update. I bought the 256 gb card the other day and it records 4k no problem. The longest I have let it run is 10 min but pretty sure it would have recorded for the full thirty. Either there is something unique about the 256 gb version or I do have a fake card. Although I bought it on Amazon, and it handles everything else besides 4k like a champ. Thanks Michael.

Unfortunately the rolling shutter in 4K is absolutely terrible. I know this because I own the 5D IV since they exact day it came out. I’ve since moved o to other options for video. It remains my primary stills camera.

The much less expensive but smarter, lighter (more gimbal-friendly) EOS R is killing this camera for video (for stills it is still definitely the number one choice)
4:2:0 8-bit smaller file sizes, good EVF, swivel LCD, ND filter adapters, advanced AF with Digic 8, EF-S lens compatibility, UHS-II SD, C-Log included(!), 10-bit external output and so on
R.I.P. 5D IV for video - p.s.: just a joke, you can still use it, it is still not bad and does have Cinema 4k at 4:2:2 8-bit - thank you Canon for still crippling the R as much as possible.
padam19 Haha! Great comment. You missed focus peaking! Lol. Binge watched all the release videos on the R! Looks promising but yeah, still no 4K 60 or full HD 120. Won’t be holding my breath for that until the 1Dxmk3 releases. RF lenses look... expensive but that vari ND adaptor ring is an absolute mint idea!
The 5D IV is still better in a number of ways.
Probably the main reason to get the EOS R is compatibility with the RF glass.
That 28-70 f/2 lens, I mean, nobody else has a lens like it. Though it's not exactly cheap.

Bits and stops are not at all the same thing!!!! You CANNOT get 12 bits video off a 5D Mark IV!!!

You would probably have 100x more subs if you speak in laymen's terms for general audience. Vloggers need your advice and they don't know anything. Would you be willing to consider trying to go back down the ladder a bit? There are so many of you photographers out there who are saying your preferences, and you are attracting other photographers who will only disagree (snobs....sorry). If you break it down in easy language and teach a little, you'll collect a bunch of dummies who will trust you more, because we know nothing. 😄

I'm just really looking for a good camera for lowlight videos. I like to keep it as simple as possible and have researched cameras for 2 years. I waste more time listening to stuff that's not helpful, as I'm trying to learn too much. Most vloggers just want it mid-range price so as not to replicate the look of a crappy cell phone, and have easy settings with great quality.
