Nanlite FS 300 Review-Good Enough?

  • Is the budget Nanlite FS300 good enough for professional use? Can it be your "everything light" or does the noise issue make it unusable-- in the real world? There's a of competition in the 300 realm now-- Aputure C300D, Godox SL300, just to name two (not to mention Nanlite's own Forza 300. Did Nanlite fall on it's own sword the the quest for the budget crown? Or is the cheapest 300 on the market a competitor for the most expensive? Real world tests, actual dB, and more....
    Nanlite FS300 used in review of the sE8 (raw audio samples): bit.ly/3GJ14AP
    Want to buy one? Try B&H: bhpho.to/36a8Bfv
    Normal price is $379, but B&H did put them on sale a few weeks back for $239 (which is when I bought mine). I don't know why that was possible for them.... This ain't an affiliate link-- feel free to buy it where ever you like!

    I went through a few other lights of similar price range until I settled on this one. FS 300 has the best combination of quality light and build quality. I hated those angle adjustment knobs that does not hold my softbox properly. Good review!

    Thank you for your detailed and insightful review. I just bought my FS300 Bi Color and was going through the same analysis of light that you discussed. I like the light on so many levels including the price. I was also a little taken back by the noise at first but can work around it or put in a new quieter fan. The quality for the money seems to be an outstanding value all things being considered.

      Yeah, there's always a trade-off with budget. I ended up buying a soft case on AliExpress for about $15. It's snug, has to go in sideways, and it can't hold the reflector, but at least it's a little easier to transport and feels more protected. This is the one I got (I think it was the Transverse Large size, though you should double check the dimensions): bit.ly/3w8CIht

    Love your setup and your attention to detail in the review. Great work man. I’ll say I own 2 of these lights, but only use them when filling big spaces with light and they’re a long distance from the mic/camera. For interviews I use a Godox VL300 as my key.

    • @hurricaneimagesmedia
      @hurricaneimagesmedia  2 года назад

      Thanks for the props! I initially got it for the same purpose as you-- to have a powerful light for backgrounds and things. When I turned on the FS300 for the first time I thought I was going to have to burn it in my review... it was so surprisingly loud. But then I took a chance and used it my mic review (of all things) and I was really surprised, picking my location pretty intentionally because the sE8 has pretty good rejection at 135 degrees. But my living room is tiny so everything is crammed up together, and I could barely hear anything. Is the Godox that much quieter? And do you prefer other things about the Godox?

    • @AlexMinor
      @AlexMinor 2 года назад

      @@hurricaneimagesmedia The Godox is almost silent You have to be right on top of it to hear anything. I also like the Godox app and the remote controls are pretty useful too.

      Thanks! I'll have to get back to that mic (the sE8). For the last couple I've been using the XVIVE LV2, which is simpler and quicker, straight into camera... but not nearly as nice.

    wow, really great video! great great atmosphere and information! it reminds me of courts, you are telling people all the facts, not the ones they'd like to hear. I think this might be my first video light. still deciding between fs150, fs300 and bi color versions of these two. according to my research, biggest advantage of fs150 is that the fan noise is actually way quiter.

      Just picked up the FS-150B for my first light, it is definitely quiet but I tried out the FS-300B at B&H and didn't find it too loud, I'd say best bet is to try it out in person if you can. The 150B should do me pretty well for interior shoots and if I really need more output the 300B exists

    • @hurricaneimagesmedia
      @hurricaneimagesmedia  2 года назад +1

      I'm afraid I haven't. I did see a video of someone swapping out the fan (and who thought it helped), but of course there are some risks... from damaging the unit to creating a "new" rattle or vibration. The video didn't make it look too difficult, for those looking to make it just a little bit better.

    You nailed it when you said about expensive v mount batteries and how long can they power up a 300w light. You mentioned there are cheaper options than v mount batteries. May I know what are they?

    • @hurricaneimagesmedia
      @hurricaneimagesmedia  Год назад +1

      I'm realizing how many cheap V mount batteries have entered the market in the past 2 years (so perhaps this statement isn't as true as it used to be). But if you search for "AC power bank" you'll get tons of portable batteries with AC outlets-- and DC, and USB-- that start at $99. You can't attach them to a light/stand/rig the same way, and you need to make sure the output is equal to your needs. But if you don't mind your battery sitting on the floor by your light stand, they're a great option.

    • @hurricaneimagesmedia
      @hurricaneimagesmedia  2 года назад

      Thanks! Yes, it's frustrating. If you work for yourself or are a one-man-band (I usually am), you plan accordingly for use as a key light. The talent isn't going to notice it (if you do, say corporate shoots); but other production team folks will look at you askance.

    • @CTPuH
      @CTPuH 2 года назад +1

      @@hurricaneimagesmedia I am a one-man-band too. I'm thinking of buying it anyways. At that price range is nearly impossible to find something as powerful as FS 300, so yeah, there should be some cons at this budget. Thank you one more time for the review!

    I reckon if the noise issue is too much, changing out the fan to a high quality, low-noise one is an option. It does void the warranty though, but what your left with is an amazing budget light!

  • @DatrysiadMedia

    Thanks for this, needed a upgrade to my phot-r which is 100w and the price for 600w is just too much of a stretch for me.
    What I needed was a light to help lift the ambient room tone, so I typically bounce my light of a ceiling or wall simply because I feel it gives me a more naturalistic light.
    I'm OK with the sound noise so this 300 I'm hoping should give me a stop and 1/4 /to half more output which I will happily take!
    I can then use the 100w still as a key since it's fighting less if the ambient is up... in theory lol.
    Thank you
