- In today’s third installment of Gentry in a Jiffy (GIAJ) I answer two of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to buying watches online.
Is it safe to buy watches on Amazon and from the online watch store Gnomon? Are they legit? What should you look for when buying from Amazon to ensure you are getting the best service?

Thank you Urban Gentry channel and TGV. A couple weeks ago I was interested in purchasing a Daniel Wellington as my first watch due to influences from social media. I did some research and now I'm the proud owner of a Seiko, an Orient, a Timex, and a Bulova. More to come in the future!

Thanks for keeping the good material coming. Hadn't checked your amazon list, it will definitely come in handy in the future. On a second note, where did you buy the little "bar cage" for the dw5600 mod? I saw you have listed the nato, adapters and strap compass but was missing that last thing. If you could place it there or suggest where to buy it would be much appreciated and I would pull the trigger on those asap!
I have used Amazon quite a few times for watch purchases here in the UK and also from the Amazon Global Store in the USA, as you advised I have always checked the reviews and the sellers before pressing the button on any purchases, so far I have had no problems with any of my purchases and as you quite rightly said Amazon have a good returns policy and extra protection for the purchaser. Thanks for this good information that everyone should know when purchasing online. Keep up the good work TGV.

Well TGV, I must say, your prior vid with the molasses in the coffee is a smash in my kitchen! I’ll admit, I am a coffee snot and hesitated but took a chance in my cup of Peet’s. Gnomon is amazing, I have bought multiple watches from them and even had them get a replacement bezel! Customer service is great, just keep in mind they are half a day behind due to their location.
In my experience, buying from Singapore is like buying from Japan: extreme attention to detail, shipping times that can be measured in hours after ordering, and a willingness to answer any question you might have. I think that both Japan and Singapore have a cultural tradition of treating business transactions very personally which translates to phenomenal service.
Singapore is basically Japan number 2........

The watch companies typically have requirements purchase requirements for authorized dealers.

I do have a question about Gnomon watches. I heard that Gnomon will send an alternate strap (for FREE) with all purchases is this true? Seems a bit costly if they do that but, I guess it could happen....

I've had nothing but great experience all the times I've bought from gnomon and same with Amazon. Though I woul stay away from the higher end stuff on amazon and go to an ad for that but hamilton, seiko, stuff like that I have no problem buying from amazon

I'm new to watch collecting hobby and have loved it this far. However, living in a somewhat dangerous country, I often worry about what would happen if a more expensive purchase were to be stolen.
How do you go about insuring or otherwising securing your most prized watches?

TGV I was wondering if you have much experience with ABC watches? I've got an old Casio Pathfinder that I've had for years that I love but it's a 51mm behemoth of a watch but it looks fine on my 7.75 inch wrist. Anyway I was looking for a smaller ABC watch for my girlfriend that would fit her better but still be similarly durable, I didn't know if you could help point me in the right direction?

I do not see the point of talking about watches I have not spent serious time with. IMO to know a watch, you must have to experience it for at least a few weeks first. I am still learning things about watches I have owned for donkeys years!!!

If I buy from Gnomon for delivery to the US, are there taxes and duties or problems with customs?
Gnomon is quite a well-known shop here in Singapore. Friends recommended me their shop and that's where I am planning to get my first Ball watch.

I just want to ask a question, actually I have so many questions because I'm a teenager and I really love watches, back to my question, as I can see on your "Amazon Watch Buying Guidelines" you said that "try to buy directly from Amazon", does it mean that if I saw "sold and ship by Amazon" it means that the seller is Amazon it self, and can I guarantee that if I buy directly from Amazon the watch is Authentic?

I fell in love with Seiko after seeing your videos, so I bought a SKX immediately, and I really enjoy it!
Recently, I saw some vintage Seiko LM in my local store, and I bought one of them.
Even though it only costs me 80 dollar, and the watch is from 1970s ,but the quality still amazed me.
I would really love to know your opinions about Seiko LM series, and what other vintage Seikos you love the most.

I'll chime in with my 2 cents to give my recommendations for Gnomon. Been down to their physical store(s) in Singapore (they moved from their original location & I've been staying in Singapore for almost 30 years). I trust them explicitly, bar none, to do my battery change for my beloved Marathon JSAR, nobody does a better job. When aforementioned JSAR was running slow, they spent the better part of 2 days diagnosing the problem, taking it apart to clean it out and it only cost me the same price of a battery change. Highly recommended, 2 thumbs up!
Gnome is great, I have bought the Squale you showed and a Steinhart. Thank you for confirming that.I bought a Steinhart vintage 39mm diver plexiglass bubble #077 of 300. Love the price range and its a great watch

Long Island watches is a great website to purchase from. TGV has mentioned them in the past
I can personally attest to this! Along with attentive service, the key to buying watches is a vendor with QUALITY CONTROL. Many vendors can't (or won't) check items they sell. Marc won't let a watch not up to standards end up in a customer's hands...Seiko fans who loathe misaligned chapter rings can appreciate this attention to QC!

Can definitely endorse your view on Gnomon watches. Have visited their shop in Singapore. Lovely store, friendly and knowledgeable people. Wouldn’t hesitate to buy from them again. You can see from the brands they sell how enthusiastic they are about watches. Enjoy their instagram entries too.
Gnomon Watches is indeed an authorised dealer in Singapore with a physical store. I live in Singapore and that's where I bought my Steinhart from... Friendly staff as well!

I bought a GMT titanium Steinhart (Ocean1 -500) from Gnomon and they were fantastic when I had an issue with the mechanical winding within the watch. Gnomon are great!

Amazons return policy on watches is excellent (at least here in the UK) - I have received full refunds BEFORE they have even received the watch back. This seems to be for watches that they themselves fulfil AND for watches supplied by other sellers. Just use their returns label (which is linked to the post office system so they know its posted) easy as that!

Hi TGV! I hope you are well! Have you ever had experience with Kleynod watches or know anyone who has? They are a Ukrainian brand and use a Ronda 150 movement. I think you have to order directly from them though, as it seems they don't sell on Amazon.
