In my day I loved fault finding, the feeling of satisfaction was great. One occasion I was called out to a very expensive house because the rcd kept tripping, I explained my cost was £35 for the call out ( 10 years ago ) and that covers the 1st hr. it was a 45 min drive, found the problem in 5 min, decorator had loosened the socket fronts so he could scrape the wallpaper off some wet wallpaper fell across the contacts of the socket removed the wet paper problem solved, it took me 20 min to extract the £35 from the owner who said it should be cheaper because I was there 5 min. Asked how much he earned as he was a solicitor he said £150 an hr. Being polite and arguing my case he flung the £35 at me and said it was robbery, I replied it was only £5 to fix the problem the other £30 was for the knowledge gained over the previous 10 years.
He was put in my list of never again.

The reason it was a 45 min drive is because that guy has used and pissed every spark in the area, what a nasty chap
Brilliant, thank you very much. Working from home and downstairs electricity went off, never had to deal with anything like this before so your video was heaven sent. Found the fault, an old 4 way kept tripping the sockets so replaced that, everything working again. Cheers buddy.
Hard to be sure by this method defiantly a good indication. But without IR testing you can be lead round the garden by compounding earth leakage
Agreed. Don't do this method, I did this and convinced myself the ring had a fault as that breaker tripped the rcd. Wasted alot of time and looked like a numpty. Check IR each circuit from the board! It was the cooker circuit! Taught me a lesson.
I think that as you charge for your're first hour , you should at least done some basic IR tests and checks with a low current leakage clamp tester before you stick the I zettle in her face
That's for real.. Then the lady said can I pay by Cheq " no worries.. (I thought it was for free..) then credit card Zapper came out.. Stunned. After a reset and no checks.

I agree - I'd be a bit miffed if a "qualified" electrician came out and completed such a basic thing to restore power and charge full price - without performing a basic check!
just watched this video, because just been to mother in-laws where the RDC switch is down, reset it and was ok, but will now go back and check each socket to see where problem is. thanks for that.

Half a century ago I went to college for 1day a week for 5 years and became one of the first qualified colour television service engineers. (city & guilds). Those were the days that demanded fault finding down to component level. Now days if its not the fuse in the plug...... Bin it. Thats progress i don't think....!! 🚮
An interesting rant but one to which we can all relate. Many of our parents could not afford to call in anyone and would always strip down and repair anything that malfunctioned.
I also remember getting my cans of Tennants super on the visits.

Really useful video.
Worth picking up an earth leakage clamp meter for jobs like this imo (and also a first indication before a board change).
You can use it to keep an eye on how the leakage changes as each circuit gets powered up and doesn't add any notable time or effort. Very useful for confirming if it's one big fault or lots of little bits adding up.
Yeah I do have one but wouldn’t have thought to use it in this situation! Good shout!
Back in the 70's I regularly replaced elements on such things as kettles, irons and toasters. The parts were readily available though no such thing as the internet. Ordering was done through catalogues or the local appliance spares shops.
Who would even dream of doing such a thing now. I could make a profit out of repairing a kettle in the 70's but couldn't make a profit repairing a vcr in the late 90's, though I made a good living out of them prior to that. 😉

Just a tip Always unplug everything out of the sockets when testing the socket circuit when fault finding, if just switching off and leaving the appliance or extension lead in it can still read through the neutral on sockets unless they are double pole switched( not all sockets are some are just single pole switched) so the switch only isolates the line side. I have experienced it before just switched off a socket outlet without unplugging and the fault was still there until I actually unplugged the appliance.

I had a rcd tripping problem once at a domestic property which was intermittent , I was thinking it was the fridge freezer as other appliances had been removed on a few occasions, I even did IR tests a few times and rcd ramp and earth loop tests but the tenant was arguing it can't be as the fridge freezer was brand new so after testing everything else I fitted a new rcd incase it was sensitive, it was still tripping out intermittently after a few days.
A few months later there was a recall by the manufacturer on the model of the fridge freezer

Got to love Tennants, trying to tell you what the problem is with zero technical training and even less experience. As the saying goes 'to save time, let's just assume I'm right'

Hello I have an issue with my boiler that it wont heat up water and I think it tripped the breaker I know ur not a boiler professional but do you know what could be causing this?
I called in to an electrical appliance shop a couple of weeks ago and told the salesman there my TV set had stopped. The remote control was not switching the set on. I tried a new one with no result so I assume a solenoid switch had seized. A simple enough job to fix. I walked out when I was told I would be charged £300.
In the past you could fix everything but the costs then were something different. In the 30s a fan was 150-500 € inflation adjusted . The wages of skilled workers back whenever about 2 €/hour. I prefer the current system where you work two hours for a fan instead of 75.
I had a new fuse box put I'm and the ceiling fan stopped working .,..is it normal to have find a fault after wards?
It's the same in Vietnam and Cambodia 🇰🇭 they just keeps repair it.😊

My RCD and ring circuit MCB keep tripping together but they only seem to trip early in the morning around 2-4am. Any ideas?

Why didn't you diagnose on the first visit? - the rcd trips for a reason/bound to happen again until fault found..
Just wondering what you charged for the first call out ? I’ve had similar and people don’t want to pay anything if it’s just to reset rcd ?
£96 we have a minimum charge of 1 hour labour no matter how long the job takes, by the time you count getting there and back its always at least an hour! She was happy to pay it very thankful to have light and heat again!
What about the second call out mate did they expect to go back for nothing as they already paid? Or did you say not to worry?

I have problems with RCD tripping. RCD tripped overnight. When testing, RCD immediately tripped when downstairs sockets were switched on. Removed everything and identified a faulty extension cable regardless of which socket it was plugged in. No appliances broken. Tonight RCD went off and when I reset it worked as normal. Nothing faulty found. Both have happened when the same phone charger has been plugged in. First time night after I got the phone. This time I plugged that charger back in after tidying up leads. About 4 hours later each time. Coincidence that this is the only time this has happened? The faulty extension cable 1st time round was downstairs and the phone charger upstairs and was still working. Could this genuine and new Google charger be causing surges that took out the extension cable in a different part of the house?
What do you charge to replace a consumer unit? I think I'm being overcharged.
Did not learn alot from that, would be useful if it were explained how to test wiring for leakage on circuits causing intermittent tripping
the other problem is the extortionate prices manufacturers charge for parts for example a washing machine control module can be £200 for the part alone plus labour you can buy a new machine for the money. the problem is the manufacturers dont want you fixing things they want you to buy new when something breaks.

Why didn't you do this fact finding mission the first-time ? Fix first and fox right. Why didn't you test the RCD and the breakers the first time

Hi, could you guide me on this?
I have a cable that runs from the oven directly to the main breaker, passing through a socket purposely fitted for the oven.
When I turn the socket on the breaker switches off, but when I turn the socket off then I can turn the breaker on and it will work.
However I tried changing the socket with a socket that I know for sure it works, but the same thing happens. The oven is not yet connected.
What could it be??
Could be literally anything and it’s impossible to say without looking at the fault myself - you would need to call out a spark

I have a problem in my house. The RCD trips the moment the switch from the meter room (outside the house, I live in an apartment) is turned on. I diagnosed in which room the problem is by turning on individual MCBs. But even after unplugging all the appliances in those rooms the RCD is still tripping. The wierd part is that my meter is showing a earth text on the screen which indicates ground leakage current. This indicator is on even when every single mcb in my house is turned off. The only way this disappears is if I turn of the main switch in the meter room. I did get my meter tested and it is fine. I believe the problem exists in the cable that connects my meter to my home (concealed). Can you please help me diagnose the issue, the electricians at my place were not able to find the problem.
We wear out, or get defects, go to a medical workshop and get less than 100% effective repairs, die and get buried, too, just as do our terminally defective tools and implements. As for new models we tend, with a partner, to create our own replacements.

Got my fualt finding lvl 3 exam next week and my college is absolutely fucking useless, I don't even see why I go tbh, I've taught myself 90% of what I know. RUclips my EAL book and IET forums have been my haven haven of knowledge

A throwaway society that works great for manufacturers they can put the funny little screws in and then you have to go to them for a new product or repair. And anything else will be intellectual property issues.
Then we end up with truckloads of ventilators that can't be repaired because the original manufacturer doesn't exist doesn't want to or much prefers you buy their new unit.

Im hardly agree with last part of your video , my mom had a washer worked 40 yrs and we replaced 3 washer in 10 yrs so far , although we def looking after things its just not fair

Are you sure that you will be able to do this till you retire? Finding a fault in in a first floor socket circuit does not seem challenging, or hard. The better and more experienced you get, the more boring your job will appear to be, to you.

You don’t just reset rcd then take card payment. You need to take cu cover off, look around property and do afew tests. You wouldn’t of had a 2nd callout then. Cowboy!
A lamp can’t trip an rcd.

Brian Steer lol no it can’t. It can trip the mcb but definitely not the rcd . A lamp blowing has nothing to do with an earth leakage fault . Think about it
Any electrician with a good few years experience will tell you an RCD can trip when a lamp blows.
I'll tell you this will happen on a TT system nearly everytime.

Resetting an RCD isn't fault finding. U should have went further the first time. 🤦♂️
