    Nice logical fault finding sequence. Good to see you testing all the circuits out and going into the appliance for a deeper investigation of the fault.

      We had a new oven that kept tripping the RCD. I found about 7 out of 9 elements had poor insulation I rang the importer direct. To my surprise they were very relaxed about it and sent me complete set. I fitted them and it gave about 15 years service

      I also have an intermittent fault that trips the RCD..I suspect it's the shower ( doesn't heat the water, just mixes). I will wait to get a basic insulation tester, I only have ordinary DMM.. Would that also give me an indication?
      Thinking ahead, would a consumer unit with RCBOs be better?
      Btw what area do you cover in the UK? I am in Reading area.

    • @finneyelectrical
      @finneyelectrical  3 месяца назад +1

      Yeah that a good 3 hours for us, could charge you a good £500 to cover but best to get a local firm in for like £150-200. Basically do what I did in the video, if it’s the shower, get the same make and mode and replace it. Check the out of the isolator with it off to check it’s the shower not the cabling

    Most useful, thanks. I have EXACTLY the same problem (cooker tripping the RCD when in use). I am going to get the cooker checked by an approved appliance engineer. You have done a (middleman) electrician out of a job somewhere...😃

    Ive had a couple of times a suspect rcd that wouldn't trip even with the test button. It turned out to be a neutral to earth fault on the 6mm feeding the hob.
    Unusual because as we all know, that that kind of fault WOULD trip the rcd !!!

    • @finneyelectrical
      @finneyelectrical  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yes mate, I’ve been black to a few where previous electrician changed over the RCD but it didn’t resolve the issue. You need to disconnect the neutral and line of the outgoing and then do an RCD test. Defiantly had that before with the test button not working with a neutral to earth fault. Was a socket screw, screwed into the neutral.

    Hey mate in this situation, before taking the oven apart, would it be worthwhile testing earth leakage on each circuit protected by the rcd? Possibly other circuits could have too many milli amps of earth leakage combined from appliances to cause intermittent tripping? great vid!

    • @finneyelectrical
      @finneyelectrical  8 месяцев назад

      Heya Samuel! Cheers for the watch, what videos would you like to see?
      So we tested everything and it was all clear but the oven. We knew the oven was the problem but then gave the customer a bit more bang for bucking pulling the oven apart.

    How would 0.8M Ohm I.R. trip an RCD ? 230/800,000 = 0.0003mA. Watching to end, you advise that expansion during oven heating may lower the IR, plus good point about parallel paths 1/R1 + 1/Rn = 1/ Rtotal.

    How do you take the neutral out. Do you mean the main neutral lead to the isolator or each circuit individually

    • @finneyelectrical
      @finneyelectrical  3 месяца назад +1

      RCD off disconnects the neutral, main switch disconnects the neutral and taking each circuits neutral removes that link between neutral to earth, meaning disconnects the TN of a tncs or tns or a link between neaitral to earth in a TT

    • @Jim804
      @Jim804 3 месяца назад +1

      It’s at the 3 minute mark I don’t get as I don’t think I see you actually take the neutral out for each one. So I’m not sure what was going on mate.

    • @finneyelectrical
      @finneyelectrical  3 месяца назад

      @Jim804 yeah took the neutral for testing that circuit so when you test you should get >200Mohm or at least over 1Mohm. Anything under that shows there’s an issue in that circuit. Then do line to cpc and check that. Obviously just turning off the mcb disconnects any links to other circuits.
