Ronnie Barker was a true wordsmith of the best kind, both sadly no longer with us. Much respect
I am so jealous ...imagine having to catch up on 50 years of British comedy...each one brand new...
Epic position to be in, what I'd give to 'stumble across' Only Fools or Steptoe etc.for the first time
At least it isn't expanding, today's "comedy" is about as funny as a funeral!
have not seen the Video where they play squash very funny
Most people know this, particularly if you're from the UK, but for those who may be confused at the end, a "rubber" in the UK, is what the US would call an "eraser". And to "rub something out" means to "erase something".
RIP Ronnie Corbett and Ronnie Barker, most talented comedians of all time.
Is Corbett dead too?
@@VaderWhoop yes moto neurone disease in 2016.
@@stevenc5227 Sadly missed
@@stevenc5227 damn!
I haven't watched TV for over 10 years so I had no idea.
FORK HANDLES !
Grew up watching The Two Ronnies every weekend, just loved them then, and their comedy is still gold today. And it was so simple inoffensive and harmless. Legends.
yep - the whole family would sit together and watch them
The Two Ronnies and Morecombe and Wise where special , they made the simplest rubbish so brilliant and funny it was unreal , true comedy heroes
Don't forget Tommy Cooper.
@@capcompass9298 I didn't leave him out on purpose , I was referring to double acts, Tommy was another story completely , he like Les Dawson had a gift for making the complex look silly
@DigitalRageInc In English the words WERE and WHERE are spelled differently because they mean different things.
Funnily Enough, I realize Tommy was a great Magician who pretended he wasn't like Les Dawson was a great Pianist who pretended he wasn't but I could listen to Les forever and a day while I, rarely, laughed at Tommy tbh..although it did make me laugh when TC got out of a London Cab and said "Don't drive off, I am going to give you a drinl" and proceeded to get a tea bag out from his top pocket and give it to the cabbie :)
What about Les Dawson & Roy Barraclough as Cissie & Ada
Seriously not kidding but every time you do the two ronnies I am howling with laughter too, they were the masters of comedy and in this day and age it is sorely missed.
You have the best laugh ever🤣🤣
his laugh kinda reminds me of uncle Albert on only fools and horses 😁(no judgement or anything like that) absolutely love it
It's a genuine laugh unlike other reactions
@@markchapman6576 exactly. He seems like a fairly genuine, down to earth fella.👍
His laugh is the best tonic to a fix bad day at work.
@@robertmilne4304 it's good for the soul as they say (whoever they are)
I particularly like this one because you can see Barker holding back a laugh for about half of it. He knew what absolute gold this sketch is.
Getting the Nun in the sketch to ask for the rubber is the kind of genius they truly were lol. In twenty years time it will still be just as funny.
do you get the irony of the newspaper "The Sun" it will give you even more humour
I loved the 2 Ronnie's growing up my gran let us stay up and watch .
Classic comedy duo,, I'm glad I grew up watching these two..
I can't help but wonder if you catch all the nuances of the humour in this sketch but delighted to see how much you enjoyed this classic and brilliant pair of the UK's greats.
Todays comedians are not patch on these two they are absolute legends
After Noddy.......you see the cutaway to the Nun.....nice setup for the punchline.
How can anyone DISLIKE?? , , This channel is about a AMERICAN guy learning OUR british humour , and 9/10 he gets it . .and if EBR dont get it he says and us as a English watchers tell him the context of the jokes/humour ... & EBR laugh is the best on the interweb PERIOD!!! and he is learning...More 2 ronnies i say... to live here in england we talk english but we rarely mean what our words say . . .EBR just leaning . . . LOVE the channel . LOVE the content.. KEEP LEARNING
Yeah, that laugh, wow, totally genuine, not faked at all.
"The Sun" is a news paper here in the UK that has on page 3 a topless model. When this started it caused an outcry as we British were extremely prudes about anything relating to sex and nudity.
They was legends
Ronnie Barker was a comedy genius and a true wordsmith, no one could or can come close to he’s play on words
Corbetts monologues were a masterclass of timing
The Ronnie on the left anonymously sent in scripts to the show and the production team said that “we have to get this chap to be on the team.” He was already in the show but did not want them to use his scrips knowing it was him.
Aw that’s cute. What a talented man xox
George Wiley was the name he used to send his scripts in.
@@michaelcooper6800 Ronnie Barker arranged a meeting at a chinese restaurant, as Gerald Wiley, for everyone concerned with the show, saying that his identity would be revealed. They were all sat down, but when Ronnie stood up and said that he was Gerald Wiley they all told him to sit back down and stop messing about. He had to stand up a second time before they would actually believe that he was the one sending in the scripts. He said he had done it so that the scripts would be accepted on their own merits. True Fact
Classic 70’s/80’s English humor. Beautifully written and performed. Some of the jokes will be missed by non-Brits, like reference to page 3 of The Sun newspaper. And by the way, a rubber is the same as an eraser, not something that you put on your seven down, four letters, D, something C, K
Deck?
@@ba55bar Duck.
Dock?
this is wonderful. reminds me of train travel to work in London in 1980s It’s also a class thing. Sun vs FT
"Rubber" innuendo aside, I love that the Nun was also doing the same crossword.
I agree, but just to be clear (in case you or anyone else isn't aware) "rubber" (English) = "eraser" (American), so the only innuendo involved was that the nun had written shit.
Nice spot. Gerald Wiley was a funny sod.
@@ilikethisnamebetter it was a play on words. The nun had indeed written "shit". Also, a nun asking for a condom. A very clever joke.
@@ilikethisnamebetter Exactly as you have explained, there was NO reference to a condom- , to the UK audience, for which of course the skit was intended, a rubber would only mean an eraser - nothing more.
@@colinwelsh2874 If it was intended (which I sincerely doubt) it would have been a gratuitous innuendo which, if it did anything, spoiled the actual joke.
FYI the Sun is a tabloid which used to have topless models on page 3.
What do you mean, used to have?!
@@davidcopson5800 Page 3 was done away with years ago.
Ronnie Barker (the one in the bowler hat in this sketch) was a master at mannerisms and wordplay. With his "Arkwright" character in "Open all hours", his stutter once caught the attention of various speech therapists, all of which offered various methods for dealing with the speech impediment.
Stammer, not stutter.
@@gaynor1721 I've always wondered what the difference is between the two? Would you mind explaining it?
@@Torthrodhel Wh....wa.......wh.....wa....what?
@@Torthrodhel There isn't any, it's just british vs american english apparently.
@@DoubleMonoLR cheers.
Genuinely, it reminds me or time on train journey and I picked up a discarded newspaper to do crossword, it had already been started and when I read one of the answers already submitted, I laughed all the way to my destination.
The clue was:- male duck, 5 letters, the person wrote DAFFY.
I'm laughing now reminiscing.
👍😂🇬🇧🇺🇸
The wordplay is just incredible. Such intelligent comedy 🙂
probably the best comedy duo ever in the UK Ronnie barker was a genius
These two never get old😂
The Nun at the end, "has anybody got a rubber?", she put shit instead of grit lol.
"The Sun people only buy it for one thing.. or a couple of things" is a reference to a british newspaper that used to have a topless girl on page 3 everyday.
If you like Ronnie Barker (the large one, the smaller one is Robbie Corbett, hence the Two Ronnies) you should checkout Porridge (a series where he played a prison inmate) or "Open All Hours" where he played an elderly randy shopkeeper.
6:57 Just for clarity, a rubber in the UK is an eraser, not what you call a rubber, I doubt a nun would have much use for that.
Last thing I saw Ronnie C in was Burke and Hare with Simon Pegg an Andy Serkis.
Absolute legends sorely missed.
Those were the days - my father travelled up to London from Bexhill-on-Sea every day, met the same men on the train doing their crossword puzzles. One day he brought out his "travellers" check game and from then on they took over a compartiment and played chess morning and evening - reminds me of the 2 Ronnies
All throughout the sketch i was wondering what the punchline at the end would be. I really didn't see that one coming.
They worked well together, so many of their sketches were brilliant.
Clicked so fast. The joy of the Two Ronnies combined with your laugh!
To clarify british news papers page three used to always have a topless model pic
this sketch exemplifies the class system as it was seen at the time, and then ridicules it. Its the perfect next step on the road of the Frost report (and Cleese) sketch that introduced the Two Ronnies in the first place.
I love watching you getting off on our humour, because our guys have had so much trouble for so many years to break in to USA, but because they weren't understood
So miss these guys on the TV, great memories of sitting with my Dad, watching them and Only fools and horses crying with laughter.
Brilliant..no swearing filthy jokes..two Ronnie's.. in a class of there own.
What I love best - is the way they lead you to what you assume is the right answer and then shoot you down! Glorious
It’s nice to see you discover the Two Ronnies... I grew up on this stuff, and it shows that modern comedy writers have a long way to go to beat this! There’s a whole heap more to discover!
I was so HOPING you’d do this one. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
They never fail so glad you have discovered them.
Ronnie Barker used to write a lot of the sketches himself under the pseudonym Gerald Wiley. Nobody else in the cast or crew knew this for years. A true comic genius.
Nose - It's red, it smells, and you can pick it in the garden. Genius.
A similar joke… a priest and a businessman on a train, each doing a crossword:
Priest: I’m stumped, the clue is “four letters for a woman”, ends in “unt” … can you help?
Man: Aunt.
Priest: Of course! …do you have an eraser?
The opticians sketch is one of my favourites.
You'd love Morcambe and Wise' sketch they did with Andre Previn - it's funny :P
Andre Preview
Yeah, the Andre Previn sketch is their best imho
I am playing all the right notes.. NOT Necessarily in the right order
When I lived in California and asked if anyone had a rubber I got some strange looks.
Two Ronnies....Swear Box is great, Crosslines is superb, squash is a classic, Swedish for beginners is clever plus any of the Bert & Charlie sketches
You have such an infectious laugh bro, The video and yourself were equally funny. 😋😀👀😁
Thanks for all the GREAT laughs you gave us, still looking up to you. CHEERIO CHEERIO. XXC

timeless comedy performed by two of the great masters of the form
Your laughter is some glorious sound. Glad you enjoyed yourself
Christmas day in Britain no-one watched the Queen, but everyone watched the two Ronnie's.
Pure comedy! How great that you’ve found these skits to watch.
the two ronnies musicals are funny as hell
So glad you like our old school humour, it hasn't changed much. Really growing to your channel
The Two Ronnies comedy was top notch
I only watch this to hear you laugh at " Strange animal found in a hive" hahahahahahah
You make my day with your infectious laughter! Keep it up. More Only Fools & Horses. 👍🏼
Thanks for the great upload and great reaction. I don't think there will ever be any greater word play comedians as these 2 legends. Such simplicity but the perfection in the way they deliver is best bar none 👍 this is the norm for people in the UK but seeing people's reactions from around the world and how much they love them is priceless
Can I make the recommendation of Piano playing by the great Les Dawson (king of the mother-in-law gags). He was a fantastic piano player and the talent it took to play the wrong notes at the right was ridiculous.
Les Dawson an absolute genius. I think Eclectic Beard will love him. 😄
These two surely must rank in the top 3 of British comedy geniuses. They worked together *so* well, and Ronnie Barker - the big one - co-wrote many of the sketches. Utterly brilliant.....
This was the gold standard back in the 70s. Saturday night, 8.15. Brilliant show. What utter bollocks we have now! Porridge. Open All Hours. Even Sorry. Rising Damp. Rose and Fall of Reginald Perrin. Now.
Ronnie Barker use to write many of the scripts, initially he used a pseudonym, a very talented man. Later in life I believe he ran an antique shop.
People on this channel complaining about The Two Ronnies? Uh!?! TTR were genius wordsmiths and comedians. More please!
It's great to see you enjoying British comedy that we was brought up with from the 70s.True comedy .Carry on, Brilliant job.
OMG, your laugh should be on prescription! 🤣🤣🤣. Makes my day every time 😂👍
Check out the squash match video with the two Ronnies, hilarious.
Noddy was a cartoon for context, books as well which I read when I was young
The swear box in a pub is funny. All the bad words are beeped out in different ways depending on how bad a word was used.
The last character made that sketch!
The Two Ronnies was the best double act ever you need to see more of them.😁👍
Sir Your laugh is so infectious. Reminds me of the ship from Fight of the navigator. Thank you so much for brightening the day.
You will never see a complaint from me. Love these guys and everything they do.
Watching your videos cheers me up like you wouldn't believe, its refreshing to see someone watching classics that us Brits have known from a young age. We really take them for granted, I bet you can see why we're such sarcastic people though eh?
for non-brit viewers - the references to the Sun Newspaper - in the 70s it was infamous for "Page 3" which featured a large daily photograph of a topless woman
love watching your reactions, so good to see others enjoying them, that Ronnie Barker was a brilliant writer.
Yep, I agree. We Brits who lived through this period of UK comedy during the 70s 80s and 90s were blessed with true wit, humour and command of language suitable for all audiences. You're unlikely to find the same calibre of talent in todays comedians... I hope other Brits of a certain age reading this will suggest other great names in British comedy worth viewing - Leonard Rossiter of 'Rising Damp'. I'm soooo glad I watched these incredible artists - and, of course, the legendary Benny Hill...
and what about Yes Minister, and Mind your Language.@@bluediamond8557
i just got 70 hours of the two ronnies box set throught the door yesterday
Absolute genius of comedy. Legends.
Forgot how good these 2 were, they were always considered to be a level bellow Morecambe and Wise
EB live your videos, 2 Ronnie's
Classic Clips ...Hilarious...😂🤣🤣
I remember seeing this one on the telly some forty odd years ago. Ffunny then and still ffuny now!
Mate besides the ronnies being absolute masterclass comedy I don’t if I’m laughing at them or your infectious laugh keep it up
Ronnie Barkers writing name was Gerald Riley, he probably wrote this as his wordplay was magnificent. The name is always in the Credits
'it pecks holes in your milk bottle tops '--ts'
'Thats a typical TheSun clue'
'Bats'
I just lost it -- this is writing, oh my word
For the joys of delivery and the vagaries of the English language, few efforts can surpass St Botolph Country Dance Team (second half, after the physical comedy).
I've seen these sketches dozens of times, but watching you react is like watching them all afresh again. Kudos to you sir.
Two legends, RIP two Ronnie's.
If only the BBC would show these two great comics again. All we get now is Dad's Army ad infinitum.
Your belly laugh is good medicine
You're missing all The Sun (newspaper) references. For years page three had a topless model on it. Which makes all the early references have significance.
Have you seen there miniseries "The Worm That Turned", it's on RUclips in multiple parts.
The best part of your videos is you laughing your head off. Nice work man.
When I'm down I just watch you laughing then I feel great again 😆
The sun is a tabloid newspaper and up until very recently they had a topsless model on page 3.
Content for the joke regarding what pecks holes in milk bottles "tits". (Blue tits a type of bird, dunno if u have them in the states, also boobs)
Blue Tits are native to Europe and Asia, so will only be seen in America where a human has imported one.
However, the wider "tit" family is present in America but more commonly known as chickadees.
Classic Two Ronnie's, great play on words. These guys were comedy genius.
Brilliant , 😂😂.Thanks for the post 👍👍
Haha. I grew up with The Two Ronnies and Morecambe and Wise. Happy Days. Their rivalry meant that their Christmas Specials produced the greatest viewing figures in British TV. For me, the funniest sketches were: for the Two Ronnies it was the Swedish Lesson (FUNEX) and for Morecambe and Wise it was Greig's Piano Concerto with Andre Previn (aka Andrew Preview)
