The national treasure that was Ronnie Barker. An absolute genius that will never be replicated.
Once in a generation a comedy legend comes along... For that generation it was Ronnie barker
100% right definitely
Should have been Sir Ronnie really
I love your reaction. Infectious 🤣
@@markpalmer7215 we would have loved that but I think he would have hated it. Apparently he wrote most of the scripts, anonymously under a pseudonym..
Ronnie was an English treasure and such a genius in comedy.
The brilliance of this sketch is that as soon as you realize he's hit you with one joke, he's hit you with another and another and another
It's the fact that the wrong words dont just sound similar to the right words, their is hidden jokes hiding in the wrong words too..
Look up the script.
I'm always stunned by Ronnie's performance in this sketch. His delivery in that stereotypical English bank manager tone is epic. Not a stumble or slip, no right words accidentally slipped in, just the wrong words effortlessly put in the right place.
Ronnie B did for the English Language here what Les Dawson did to playing the piano...
It helps when he also wrote the sketch 😃
That takes some doing. I'm fairly articulate but I wouldn't last a minute doing that. The man had a genius mind.
But he liked his food and said to David Jason " we can't be funny on an empty stomach " class. Pure class.
@@martinotoole9959 Rehearsed to within an inch of its life, I imagine. Brilliant.
@@Tilion462 Les Dawson was a brilliant piano player, he had to be to be sure to hit some many duff note's in all the right places.
It's not just the mispronunciation that makes this sketch brilliant comedy, its the double entendre involved AND Ronnie's ability to deliver it complete dead-pan faced, while everyone in the building must be rolling on the floor with laughing, camera crew and all. He was definitely one of a kind and he wrote the material too. Brilliant man, sadly no longer with us! RIP Ronnie!
There’s not many Americans that truly appreciate our British humour, you sir are a rarity 👏 keep up the good work
Ronnie Barker was an absolute genius. RIP RONNIE.
Ronnie Barker himself wrote a lot of the Two Ronnies sketches, under the pseudonym "Gerald Wylie". He did this so that Ronnie Corbett and the production team judged them on their merits and didn't just use them because he'd written them. There's a book by him called All I Wrote, which contains the scripts to all the sketches he wrote, including unused variations. His most famous sketch was the legendary Four Candles.
Growing up in the 70’s in Australia watching all the British comedy with my Dad, Ronnie Barker was his favourite, especially Open All Hours 😂😂😂👍🏻
How Ronnie delivers this without laughing is beyond me. This is so very very clever
On the same tack, the pronunciation errors by the British agent disguised as a French gendarme in 'Allo 'Allo is of great comedic value.
Officer crabtree . Good moaning .
Good moaning...I have good nose and bad nose😂😂😁
Arthur Bostrum.. 👌
I was pissing by the door when I heard a shit
I have a massage from Michelle.
He was known to be able to run through such complicated scripts like this without any takes. He would do it, first time final. He was unbelievably gifted.
What is even more genius about this sketch is he does it all in one shot. They point the camera and he does his thing.
That's the great thing. He wasn't ACTING . He was being himself. Pure non-stop genius from start to finish. Just start recording and let him do his stuff.
He was such a comedy genius. Every show he did makes me laugh till this day . Porridge was him at his funniest
Many years after this show had ended he was interviewed and the interviewer mentioned that this particular sketch was a favorite and Ronnie Barker quickly slipped right into character and it was hilarious! He and Ronnie Corbett were truly special and they are missed by all of those who knew them and those of us who had the joy of seeing them work on TV or those who were in the audience.
Ronnie is an excellent comedy actor. He plays the part of a criminal in prison. The programme is called Porridge and it is a classic comedy, well worth a watch.
Porridge is on RUclips. Also its sequel Going Straight.
@@joanneentwistle7653 Going Straight is very much underrated. I believe a 2nd series but the sad passing of Richard Beckinsale obviously meant it didn’t happen 😢
One of the best ever, and some fine drama .porridge is a treasure. Good observations sir.
once you hear the very last line ever spoken in porridge and you realise it's the best advice you will every receive and it stays with you for life.
I was directed to a Ronnie Barker show a couple weeks back called Clarence from 1988. All 6 episodes are on RUclips and it co-stars Josephene Tewson [sp?] best known as Elizabeth, Hyacinth Bookay's ever suffering next door neighbor.
And what makes it even doubly effective is the absolutely serious and flat delivery.... How he does without falling down laughing himself is beyond me.... I’m going to use “So in confusion” I’m my next IT presentation…
Genius stuff - in case no-one else mentions it, Ronnie Barker wrote these sketches himself under the pen-name of "Gerald Wiley" - he used to submit the scripts anonymously to the producers, and it was many years before he confessed that he was actually "Gerald" (I think it was when they invited "Gerald" to the cast Christmas party!)
He once turned down one of "Gerald"'s scripts just to throw them off the track!
only saw this after i wrote my own version of the same tale. apologies, but i'll leave mine there just in case lazy people don't want to scroll down a few comments....lol.
I believe that was when he knew he had to tell Ronnie Corbett that he was Gerald.
What so amazing about Ronnie B and these monologues is that he did it in one take on most occasions. When you consider the complexity of each dialogue, it is stunning how good he was. For me, Britain's greatest ever comedy actor.
Stanley Unwin was also a master of the language too. He could just make up words on the spot that sounded like they were right.
The Professor also invented Unwinese as well as being able to think on his feet. This meant Unwinese lent itself to being extended with little or no effort, because it had some sort of set of rules to it. Not sure if it is documented as to those rules, but if it is then it would be fun to resurrect it today. Go hit up wikipedia and read "Stanley Unwin (comedian)". There is some selected reading there which will no doubt amuse. :o)
Deep joy
when Stanley Unwin interviews Peter Hawkins (bill and ben) has me stictches every time it never gets old
@@simonfreeman8233 Now that would be a good one for a reaction video
Didn't he invent spoonerisms?
My father has been in a well known Welsh choir all his adult life and back in the early 80s the choir done a sketch singing as old miners and was so happy that he met the two ronnies and if I heard the story a thousand times lol. Legends of comedy missed by many!
Thats pretty cool. Can't say I blame him for telling the story all the time
So nice to see an American appreciate UK comedy, even more so with the genius Mr Barker. Keep up the good work EB 👍
The guy's explosive laugh is priceless, even funnier than the brilliant sketch he's watching
Sadly that era of comedy is no longer with us ☹️
Treasure it, we're rapidly entering and era of no comedy.
The master wordsmith. The greatest of all time.
Another hilarious play on words from the master Ronnie Barker.. Your reaction was what I expected,, just as hilarious..
The ultimate comedy actor, never to be forgotten, my favourite, grew up with him. 👏👏👏👏🇬🇧🇬🇧
So did I Victoria, and some hard years were made happier by his presence.
Sir Laurence Olivier said Ronnie was his favourite actor,
@@NPA1001 Aw! What would he know!
You gotta watch Ronnie Barker's Drinks Order sketch. How he remembered his lines in that sketch I'll never know.
Ronnie is a master wordsmith who starred in a sitcom set in a prison called porridge and a corner shop called open all hours both excellent shows.
I adore his 'serious' monologue sketches and the genius part for me is how he keeps a straight face. You nailed the other part I find so clever (his mispronunciations ^-^) - Glorious and SO clever. Thank you for sharing
Ronnie Barker performace in the tv series porridge got me trough some dark times such a legend
This man wrote the very best sketches EVER..
The Two Ronnie's are required viewing. Two short 'serials' they did, I remember fondly from the mid to late '70's were "The Worm That Turned" and "The Phantom Raspberry Blower Of Olde London Town"...
Those two are probably their best ones. Also their musical numbers
Ha ha Ronnie barker looked like my father... Brilliant... Your laugh is so infectious!
You don't realise how much your brain is working watching this.
Your logical side is trying to work out what's right and what's wrong, and working out what to replace the mistakes with so it can make sense of the story.
At the same time the creative side of your brain is also registering the mistakes but interpreting them into funny scenarios.
Genius.
And if you've ever tried deliberately saying a word wrong in a sentence and trying to make it sound natural, imagine how hard it is to recite this sketch without accidentally getting it right.
If you noticed, this was filmed in a single take, start to finish
Ronnie was an amazing wordsmith with an amazing imagination. If you haven't already, check out 'The Two Ronnies Crossed Lines'. Only Ronnie could make two telephone conversations be so hilarious.
This actually shows - also - the brilliance of not just Ronnie Barker, but the speed of the human mind at amending the 'mispronounced' words, to the contextually correct one, within our own language once we've been hit once or twice by the primer 'Pispronunciation' and then 'worms' instead of 'words'. Professor Stanley Unwin was a master of the art, termed 'Unwinese', who could rattle off incredible 'manglos' as everyday conversation. Although we can be incredibly adept at translating the clever goobledegook that Messrs Barker and Unwin came up with, a moment should be set aside to realize, and appreciate, the absolute geniuses that these gentlemen were!
You might appreciate 'Allo 'Allo, it's an old British sitcom set in occupied France during WWII, but there is a lot of clever (and juvenile!) language based humour in that too.
It takes the piss out of the British, French, Germans, Italians and probably a lot more besides, in equal measure so it's all fair and good fun 👍
E B, your laugh is SO infectious. I've laughed along with the Two Ronnies for Decades......and to hear an American absolutely roaring with laughter does my old heart good !!
Rip Ronnie Barker, our Uncle Ronnie who made us laugh on prime time in the 70's and 80's. So loved he was by all families in the day. I miss his genius humour.
Some of those pismronunciations, he's almost channelling Stanley Unwin, who is a legend for doing similar narratives in his own mispronounced "unwinese". Always brought great joy to my eardrobes, I can tell you.
It's nice to see an american who actually understands the british program they're watching, most seem to stare vaguely with a smile on their face pretending they understand whats going on ,it's great to see you genuinely enjoying yourself.
You neglect to mention how brilliant Ronnie Barker is performing these incredibly funny sketches...his amazing talent....and you should be aware he also wrote a lot of the Two Ronnies material
The fact that he manages to keep a straight face whilst doing this is superb !
Just loved your reaction! Yes, Ronnie Barker was a complete genius and is sorely missed. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN PORRIDGE???? If you haven't, watch every episode from beginning to end. You will never tire of it - Ronnie B was an amazing and underrated actor. But the script, the casting, the acting - flawless perfection and, IMHO, has never been bettered.
"Mrs hairy whitemouse (mary whitehouse) not to be confused with Mrs woodlouse, the hog-dangler (mrs woodhouse, the dog-handler)" = cracks me up every time [el'sda2].
When my mum moved to England from France in the 70s, she was studying and working, and watched a lot of TV to help her learn English..
She says something clicked on watching the Two Ronnies.. when she laughed out loud , she realised she understood the jokes! Understanding puns and mispronounciation in a foreign language is the ultimate test of our knowledge of that language... She never looked back, she was a true Anglo-file , married an Englishman and here I am as a product of that union (proof that the French and English can live together in perfect harmony ..
All thanks to the Two Ronnies 🙏🌈
Haha!
Anglo~file? Phile maybe? 👉🇬🇧👈👉🇬🇷👈🤔
@@alexmarshall4331 lol I did wonder about my spelling 😂 woops
Ronnie Barker was the writing genius behind the 2 Ronnies as well as Open All Hours
EB your laugh is contagious.
guy was a comedic genius indeed. I knew the other Ron by chance, an early sitcom of his used to show here on cable, but not Barker. precious.
What doubles the comedy is that he speaks without cracking up, and he says everything in almost a cut-glass English accent. What a genius.
You really need to see him in a show called 'open all hours ' where he plays a shopkeeper with a stutter lol.
Most definitely
G-g-granville fetch your cloth
Damn I miss the Ronnies RIP
Me too, an amazing and truly talented man a genius never to be replicated.... God bless Ronnie barker.
Those were the days. I miss Englishness.
The awe inspiring thing is, that the Two Ronnies had a weekly show, this was a short sketch, amongst a series of short sketches, all with the same genius.
I haven't seen this in years. Thanks for this buddy
Ronnie Barker was unreal, I was very young when they were on the TV, my step-father who was a very serious man used to be in tears. Such smart, clever comedy. Something to check out is 'Porridge' which is a sitcom where he is the main character, but you'd need to see an episode rather than just a few minute clip for it to tie in.
Mind bogglingly funny and the execution by Ronnie B is beyond belief - comedy genius.
One of my favourite comedy sketches from a brilliant comedian. How he kept a straight face through doing that, I will never know. And seeing you laugh yourself made me laugh even more. It makes my day.
If you're loving watching the Two Ronnie's, you need to watch their name droppers sketch. Absolutely hilarious and a classic!
Ronnie Barker was an absolute genius with language!
Ronnie Barker loved language and loved to play with language and right at the end of this while he leads everyone in song we see very early use of what we might call these days ‘text speak’ for example we might text c u for ‘see you’. And for many years RB would send the production team ideas for or whole sketches for the show but would use a pseudo-name Gerald Wiley. This name would often appear in the show credits. But nobody (including Ronnie Corbett) ever knew who Gerald Wiley was until the producers eventually said they just had to meet him at which point RB said he knew him and would bring him along to a working lunch. There of course he made the great reveal. This had gone on for some years by this time. And the reason? RB wanted the work to stand on its merit alone and not because he was one of the show’s stars 😊
He did that off the cuff with no auto cue
That is insane amounts of talent to pull it off, off the cuff
True talent doesn't need autocue, autotune, auto… anything. All a third-rate "entertainer" needs today is lots of tech to make up for missing talent. Pathetic!
Please watch "Porridge " it has Ronnie Barker in it and I'm sure you would love it.😁👍
My Favourite sitcom. Brilliant script, acting and direction.
Good suggestion, but is there not a risk of the Wonderful Beard popping a bollock or fruiting his looms? We grew up watching Ronnie Barker, we're trained. EB is coming to this for the first time as an adult, we don't want to break him.
The comedic ability and the timing Ronnie had can never be rivalled or on par with.
I was brought up on this as a kid here in U.K., they still make me laugh to this day! So many great sketches like Jehoshaphat and Jones & friends ......
Ronnie B wrote under a pseudonym for The Two Ronnies, so his submissions wouldn't be used just because they had his name on them. It was a brilliant way of discovering if they were as funny as he hoped they would be. At the end of filming one series a meal was arranged for the team to meet the previously unseen writer, 'Gerald Wiley', only for Ronnie B to stand up himself & admit the clever ruse to them all.
Ronnie Barker was an absolute master. I love him as Fletch in Porridge
All done in one take! Absolutely loved both Ronnies and cried when they passed. Total genius’s and great childhood memories sharing them on tv. 😁
The reactions of the American man had me in hysterics 😂😂😂😂
Comic genius never going to be replaced or bettered absolutely brilliant
Loved this sketch. Comic genius. Wrote to Ronnie B, years after his retirement to an Oxfordshire antique shop. His autographed reply is a much treasured item.
Bro, I never, ever tire of this masterpiece from Ronnie B and in the same vein, I never, ever tire of watching your reaction to it and am virtually in tears, side-splitting with laughter with you within the first two mins. Whenever I need a pick-me-up, I’m straight to this vid!! Much love and good wishes to y’all on the other side of the pond 🇺🇸 from this side of the pond 🇬🇧
😊🇬🇧🇺🇸
I love watching your reactions, its so endearing seeing someone react to their first viewing of these! I would love to almost forget these sketches and see them all over again, and in a way this allows me to do so
His cockney sermon is another great one.
He in sitcom called open all hours
The best comedy is understated and not shouted at you. For British comedy Ronnie Barker was a master. I am delighted that this is recognised by others.
Two Ronnie's drunken wedding speech, Mr Barker the King Midas of comedy.
How he can read this with a straight face just takes talent. Once met Ronnie when I was a kid, I was reeeeally shy though, he was signing his then, book, must've been about 1980.
The genius is in the presentation. To learn that, present it without any hesitation. Pure genius.
The Two Ronnies, Ronnie Barker especially, were much loved, and highly talented. There is a musical sketch of theirs that I will always remember, but can't find. I hope someone watching this can point me in the right direction.
It was of the two of them selling ice cream and shell fish on a beach somewhere, with a song about their wares, which turned into a song about some ladies in old time bathing suits. The only line I can remember is that one of them was "Built like a jetty, and married a Peer".
as a Brit it gladdens my heart to see you react to the two ronnies like this. they where/are national treasures
"A horse. A house. My kingdom for a hearse." Brilliant!
Your laughter is contagious
Alan is a real cool dude
I am SO glad you got around to doing this sketch, it is one of my all time favourites!!
I knew the christmas Carols bit would get you.. no matter how many times i watch this clip, that bit always makes me laugh so hard...
That was the cleverness of Ronnie Barker. He was replacing the original words with different words and did it subtly enough so you weren’t going to be too distracted from understanding what the actual words were in the sketch.
So good to see you having such a good laugh at the Great Rony Barker who wrote most of the sketches they did.
Just one request could you increase the sound level of your sketches for those of us who don't hear quite so well especially when you are having such a good belly laugh your self. Most Americans don't get British humour so it's great to see you having such an appreciation for it.
The beauty of The Two Ronnies and Monty Python, and similar across the spectrum is their delivery of what may be 'utter twaddle', and do it in such a serious, convincing and professional way. That cracks me up.
I've seen this before and it is excellent but the thing that brought tears of laughter is laughing along with you. Your laughter is so infectious it's enough to set me up for the day. Thank you for these little moments of joy. 😘
Command of the English language, is the art that makes great comedians.
Although visual humour can be funny too
Your reaction to this is priceless! 😂 so glad you enjoy these comedy legends
Comic genius, who was called The Godfather of British comedy by his peers and contemporaries, handed the baton over to David Jason. In my opinion 2 peas in pod.. classic.. well done EB another fantastic reaction vid
Effortlessly hurts your face laughing. Pure genius and delivered with a straight face.
It's amazing and brilliant these sketches still bring happiness to the world 40 or so years later. Really glad you enjoy them, despite not (presumably) getting all the 70's UK names referenced. As a kid I enjoyed the series of 2 Ronnies sketches "The Worm That Turned", about meek men seeking escape to Wales from a world dominated by women. Very un-pc. Peace to you and yours this festive season dude.

I've only known Ronnie from Porridge and open all hours so its great to see more of his other stuff
Possibly his earliest stuff was on the Radio, he was in The Navy Lark, it gets repeated on Radio 4 Extra. On TV he was also in The Frost Report with John Cleese & Ronnie Corbett.
The beauty of Open All Hours and Porridge is for me that although both Fletcher and Arkright look similar they are two totally different people. The genius of Ronnie Barker
Do you mean you have never watched The Two Ronnies? If not......do! 😄
I saw your thumbnail/title, I clicked, Pavlovian response. I knew we'd be in for some real belly laughs & I'm addicted to yours. lol Less than 15 seconds in & you've already had to pause the video because you're laughing too much. I love it! Thank you for not disappointing. I always end your videos with a smile on my face. 😁
It’s not just that they came up with the sketch, Ronnie was able to speak it so well it sounded completely natural
Ronnie Barker and Bob Monkhouse 2 of the best wordsmiths, never disappointing.
Your laughter is a tonic brother, and you wouldn't believe how much I appreciate being able to lighten my heart for a few minutes ❤️
Ooh boy. You're gonna wet your drawers with laughter
A very skilled man who too comedy very serious. Sharing any thing by him is a treat.
If you want more comedy from The Two Ronnie’s, I would recommend “A Round of Drinks” and “Crossed Lines”.
And "Name Droppers"
