He survived decades of the Catholic Church’s wrath, death threats from the IRA and a ban by Irish and Australian TV, only to have his television career end in controversy when he used the f-word in an innocuous joke. He was banned from the main tv station here RTE..
In England we loved the bones of him though

Having grown up in London in the 1960s and 70s, I was a big fan of Dave Allen's, so I felt extremely privileged to get to know him when we were both members of the same health club in Kensington during the mid 1990s. I have fond memories of spending many afternoons, sitting in a sauna with him, when he told me about his early career in television, as well as a priceless anecdote that involved my father, who had worked in theatres during the late 50s and early 60s. He also told me that the BBC had wiped all of his early shows from the tapes they used to record television back then, due to the cost of the tapes, which they recycled. As a result, the first series of his tv show for the BBC was entirely erased and as far as I'm aware, none of it was archived. He was a lovely and generous man and he retained his sense of humour long after his tv career was over.

I knew you'd like Dave Allen when I initially sent you some material. In the 80s, when the older comics went out of fashion and the Alternative Comedy started, Dave Allen was one of the few that still had a show and was respected by the New Wave

I’m cracking up watching this - I grew up watching Dave Allen and I think it shaped much of my philosophy in life. His take on religions earned him many haters, but many more admirers.

The Irish funeral is his classic. He was good verbally, silently, he was different, remains different and is still funny, now that is difficult to do.

Probably the best raconteur of all time, always gave everyone a different story about how he lost his finger.
