The thing that bothers me about Grass types is their lack of coverage. Before Gen 6, it was the most resisted type, resisted by a whopping SEVEN different types. And prior to Gen 4, there was a lack of good one turn Grass type moves. Leaf Blade was the only decent one but only Sceptile got it. And like you said, Razor Leaf was strong in Gen 1 but got nerfed.
Most Grass types I see only learn STABs, Normal and sometimes Poison coverage. Usually types like Ground, Rock, Fire, Water, or Ice pair well with Grass but not that many Grass types get those types of coverage moves. You see a few exceptions (Tangrowth, Tsareena, Tapu Bulu and Abomasnow).
One thing I can say is that Grass types have good status moves, immune to powder moves, common resistances, and compared to Rock, that has the same # of resistances and weaknesses, you see mono Grass and dual Grass types in higher tiers than Rock types.

Breloom has Rock Tomb (for Technichan), Rock Slide and Stone Edge
Torterra has everything it needs as far as coverage goes
      same with Chesnaught

There are some Pokémon that have these, those you listed like Torterra, Celebi and Sceptile, just me saying a good number of grass types lack common coverage.
Pretty much why I think moves like Earth Power and Power Gem should be distributed more to them (they did with Venusaur and Abomasnow this gen with EP).

being the most resisted type and the type with the most weakness is already bad, but to salt the wound many grass Pokémons have abysmal coverage. Another problem is that the majority of Grass types are slow AF as well.
Not counting Mythicals/Legendaries, the fast is Sceptile with 120 speed, then Whimsicott with 116, followed by Serperior with 113 (Which is also something Serperior has the advantage over, especially since its also bulky enough), Jumpluff with 110 speed (But then is set back by its 4x Ice weakness in the process and its other mediocore stats). The next fastest is Gourgeist with 99 speed, depending on the form. Then we have Grovyle, Sawsbuck and Leafeon with 95. Leavanny with 92 and then we have Roserade and Lilligant with 90. Grass type mons were meant to be more "supportive" in competitive, with the amount of status moves. The type by itself is really bad for the lack of coverage, mostly depending in a secondary type to make them more effective.

Grass is one of those types that people often think is worse than it actually is. 5 weaknesses is a lot sure, but the only ones that you commonly see are Fire and Ice, with Poison, Flying, and Bug being much more niche. Meanwhile resistances to Water, Ground, and Electric is an incredible trait to have in a world of Scald, Earthquake, and Volt Switch.
Offensively, sure Grass is resisted by 7 types, but once again, being good into Water, Ground, and to a lesser extent Rock, is a valuable asset to any team, to the point where a lot of Pokemon used to run Hidden Power Grass for coverage when that was still a thing (Gen 7 Blacephalon, Gen 3 Zapdos, etc.), and even without it, a lot of Pokemon still like like running a Grass coverage move.
And how could we forget their giant toolbox of support options? Spore, Strength Sap, Leech Seed, Sleep Powder are among some of the best moves in the entire game, to the point where they specifically made it so Grass itself was immune to Leech Seed, and then powders and spores Gen 6 onward.
Even in modern competitive Pokemon, things like Serperior, Rillaboom, Ferrothorn, Amoonguss, Kartana, Tangrowth, Whimsicott, Breloom, Chesnaught, and Venusaur are all able to leverage the beneficial parts of the Grass-typing to great success.
A of this is to say that I do think Grass could still use a little buff, considering how quite a few Grass-types end up feeling underpowered. I've thought up ways to balance the type chart, and the way I ended up changing Grass was just to make it resist Rock. The combination of Ground + Rock offensive coverage, or QuakeSlide, is one of the best two-type offensive combos in the game, naturally hitting all but a select few Grass-types for at least neutral. With this change, every Grass-type in the game would naturally resist QuakeSlide, save for the Grass-types that happen to love losing their Rock weaknesses, like Abomasnow, Jumpluff, or Leavanny. Additionally Grass-types would take reduced damage from Stealth Rock, which would help them to switch in better, something any Pokemon appreciates (Stealth Rock ideally wouldn't deal type-based damage anymore, but whatever). Changing anything else about Grass felt unnecessary and didn't make much sense lorewise, while the new Rock resistance would at least make sense due to Grass beating Rock offensively, and how Grass is sorta the type to dominate over the natural world

Also, Ice is one of the worst types in the franchise, and being weak to it causes Grass and Flying to rank near the bottom of my type ranking list. In fact, Flying is also weak to Rock, and like I said, Ice and Rock are two of the worst types in the franchise. The Flying type is so bad that it took five generations for any Pokemon to come along and be only Flying type or even primary Flying.

And that type coverage is the only thing Gogoat really has, cuz its slow AF (68 speed), so it dies to anything bug, flying, ice related really fast, because its physical defense is also piss poor (62 physical). So this means that Gogoat dies in one hit against a SE physical move and its special defense is also only 81. Meaning you also need to run Aerial Ace in case you are faced off against a Fighting type that can learn Ice Punch (Which is the majority of them).
Which in turn means you need to either lose one STAB move in Grass or lose one of the coverage moves. And it needs that Grass move, cuz most, if not all, water types can learn Ice attacks as well.
      Gogoats best moveset is
Horn Leech (It needs it to stay alive due to its piss poor physical defense)
Aerial Ace (To deal with Bug and Fighting types carrying Ice Punch, but is also an advantage over other Grass types)

I think bug gets a slightly worse rap than it deserves, mainly because our primary exposure to it is through the earlygame bugs like Butterfree, Breedrill, Paras, Ledian, Spinarak, Beautifly, Dustox, Kricketune, ect. And while they are decent they also aren't strong and usually get dropped by level 15 in favor of the much stinger pokemon you have found.
That said some stong late game pokem like scyther/scizor, pinser, heracross, yanma/yanmega, shuckle, forretress, ect are all very useful bug types. Some of them are genuinely good at playing the oneshot game, but others like shuckle and forretress are tanks that need a slightly more advanced strat. (Or stall but stall is boring) And of course in later gens alot more bugs with good basestats were introduced along with better moves like x-scissor, U-turn, and bug buzz getting added. (I think HGSS are the best games to do a bug only run in due to the abundance of good mons and moves)
Full discussions on types have to include the full context from the type chart to available moves to the general quality of the pokemon of that type. (Like bug originally just being an earlygame powerup but also having some good lategame mons) For ice it has always been a lategame type meant for slaying dragons. (Dragonite, Salamance, Flygon, and Garchomp are all 4x weak to it) but its often been easier to just put icebeam on your best special attacker instead of getting an ice type itself. (Although starting in gen 4 blizzard works like thunder which is a great buff)
I've never considered poison to be terrible but it could use a buff, and i really want a steel/poison type just so the ultimate defensive mon can exist. (Seviper being a perfect candidate for getting an evolution with this typing)

-Bug (common weaknesses even when only 3 of them, resistances don't matter when Ground and Fighting get Rock coverage, resisted by half the types, mostly dogshit mons)
-Ice (4 common weaknesses, only resist itself, mostly slow mons that make the weakness problem worse. Great offensively tho)
-Rock (5 weaknesses with 4 of them being super common STAB or otherwise, 4 resistances when half of them don't matter, STAB moves that have a chance of missing, mostly slow mons also making the weakness problem worse. Great offensively, pretty similar to Ice overall, they also have the infamous Stealth Rock the type is best known for)
-Grass (5 weaknesses with 3 of them being common, resisted by half the types, mostly slow mons with either none existent movepools or dual-typings that don't work for them, best set of resistances of the contenders as well as interesting support moves)
-and Poison (resisted by 6 types, only super-effective against Fairy and said Grass, weak to the ever prominent Ground, decent/solid defensive typing but mostly outclassed by Steel

Honestly normal is worse than poison :
      - insane lack of resists (only hads a ghost immunity which is good but not but much, that means that aside from ghost you will always take at least neutral damage which isn’t good in competitive)
      - mediocre offensive presence due to no type its super effective against and walled by 3 types
This overall makes pure normal pokemon very difficult to justify the use of because you know right of the bat that they will never hit super effectively and have very little defensive utility and synergy to your team, so that’s why most pure normal types who have good treats like stats and movepools like Zangoose, kangaskhan, bouffalant struggle even in the lower tiers because of their pure normal type. Normal really only works well as a dual type and those aren’t that common unfortunately and even then as far as dual types go you usually want something else than normal.

I don't think poison is bottom 5. Being immune to poison status and having a chance to inflict it with most stabs is useful, and it's not bad defensively. It's also insanely good with some double typings, like Dark/Poison, Flying/Poison and Water/Poison

    • @jasonreed7522

Bug has a few really good mons and starting un gen 4 the movepools got alot deeper/better. (Forretress and shuckle are great tanks, Heracross and Scyther/Scizor are good attackers. Bug is just famous for being an early game powerup, but its still not super strong)
Ice's original function was to kill dragins in the Elite 4 (Dragonite, Salamance, Flygon, and Garchomp all are 4x weak to it, but this just makes it a good coverage move more than anything)
Normal is actually a pretty decent type, its primary advantage is accurate high base power moves on high base attack mons. Basically you are spamming stab return not playing the type chart, and using good coverage moves as needed. (Linoone can sole the emerald E4 with bellydrum, return, and shadowball which is nothing to snease at)
Rock, grass, and poison are all nice secondary typings but definitely are not top teir types for the reasons listed. (But a hypothetical poison/steel could be an amazing defensive mon, and with the right stats could even be a serious threat)

An easy issue with grass types is they are structurally (moves, abilities, etc) designed for a slow playstyle. But then the majority of the game is build around a speedy one. Was it deliberate on their part to show that in the anime with Ash's Turtwig? And how things got difficult for him after he evolved and got slower? Not sure, but it was a good example of it.
And it doesn't help when the slow playstyle means being tanky, but there are so many common ways to get 2x damage on grass types, and most of the offensive recovery options for them did little, since they are well resisted, and only hit 2x on three things, with rock and ground arguably being one from how often they are paired together. Grass Type is just sadly kept too niche. Too good in it's niche to need buffing, since when it works it works very well, but too subparr everywhere else to be very 'fun' really.
At least give Grass types their own debuff move. Maybe something like 'thorns' that works like burn and sticky barb.

I feel like grass is a victim of constantly being rooted(hah) in tradition. While the game is growing(haha) around them, grass types remain repeating the same sort of troupe over and over again. You see this is rock and ice as well.
The thing is, you'd have grass types with powerful traits. Sceptile for example is one of the fastest grass types in the entire game. But looking at its movepool, you start to see the problem. It's a special attacker, but with very few special moves. And no calm mind or nasty plot to boost it further. Well now it has to rely on its physical movepool. It has Earthquake which covers steel types, Swords Dance for boosting its attack. But rock slide and Acrobatics are its only other options. Weak moves that must be boosted 4 stages on average in order to do any meaningful damage.
Roserade is another mon I thought should be good. Despite having a good speed and special attack stat, it still struggles with grass weaknesses because it's movepool I'd severely limited to poison, grass, and normal attacks. As well as technician being worthless on Roserade because it has no moves 60bp or less that isn't just outclassed by Energy Ball and Sludge Bomb.
And I will also mention Virizion. It has a strong Grass Fighting type to use, but a pitiful 90 attack to use it with. Yes it gets Swords Dance and a good speed stat, bit with 90 attack it can't break through much. And it's movepool won't allow it to break poison types at all because it's limited to its Duel type.
Why I think this is bs is because water for example has access to many many things to help itself. It defensively checks fire, one of the best attacking types as well as threatens ground and rocks two of the other most threatening types. It's only weak to grass and electric, with only grass resisting its attacks. But guess what
The majority of water types learn ice beam or ice Fang.
Water types typically carry the stats, abilities, and movepool to handle its checks, while grass has to scrape the bottom of the barrel to counter the massive list of things its weak too. Water is gaurnenteed to have ice beam, while Grass is just lucky to have Earth Power or Earthquake. And an act of Arcues needs to occur before they get Stone Edge or a good electric attack!

Defense IVs, which has actually allowed me to put Sp. Attacking monsters like Shadow-Rider Calyrex to rest (with Sleep Powder, not usually as 1v1 unless the situation calls for it). With Smeargle being prominent in the tier and capable of learning Spore, I either have Hatterene’s Magic Bounce or a Grass-Type like Venusaur or Serperior since they’re immune.
Aside from Venusaur and Serperior, the only other Grass-Types I use are Cradily, Rillaboom, Serperior, Ferrothorn, and Whimsicott (have a female one called Cotton; she’s so cute 🥰). But then some others, most of which are also my favorites, like Torterra, Decidueye, and Sceptile (even with its Mega) are either RU or NU, which hurts me, but it’s understandable to see why.

Ice is my favorite type and I would not call it the weakest. As long as you go first, which is possible via trick room, choice scarf or slush rush, it can actually KO a lot of strong pokemon. I at least have had quite a lot of success with my mono ice teams

That's just it, ice is very much a glass cannon of a type, having solid offensive capabilities but are atrocious defensively, which is exactly why they are only really good at being offensive Pokemon, as besides the slush rush sweepers you mentioned, things like Cloyster with shell smash, Weavile and Galarian Darmanitan are some of the biggest stand outs that have really made names for themselves. The problem is that these types of ice Pokemon are more often than not the exception to the rule rather than the standard, with it being much more common to see them boasting high defensive stat distributions that their typing does practically nothing to compliment, even pairing it with steel, the best defensive type in the game, doesn't exactly do a ton to help fix it's issues as a tanky type, as Alolan Sandslash can attest to

I agree. For me, when doing play throughs in a game, I tend to find less reason to use a Grass-type Pokemon in general, except for very niche reasons (Water/Ground-type Pokemon are an example, but are far too few). For the types Grass is super-effective against, Water- and Electric-types already cover those and both types are GREAT to have in a team. I get so much use out of my Water-type and Electric-type Pokemon that Grass-type just feels redundant.

Problem with most grass pokemon is their pretty bad type coverage. Grass and Ice mons have by far the most plain same type learnsets comparing to any other types. In most cases your move options are Grass + Normal + an occasional 3rd move of a different type. Even dual-typed grass mons have pretty shallow movepools. When it comes to the type itself Grass isn't as bad, Loses to Fire Flying Bug and Poison and wins against Ground and Water the 2 most used types in competitive Pokemon. As for the stats of Grass mons in general, those with decent stats get hindered from bad movepools while the other half have amazing movepools but terrible stats to utilize them.

    • @jasonreed7522
      @jasonreed7522 2 года назад

Also in gen 3 i notice grass types seam to fall into 1 if 2 categories damage dealers and vampires. (The first set learns moves like vinewhip, razor leaf, magical leaf; and the second set gets absorb, mega drain, and giga drain) and rarely a mon learns damaging grass moves from both sides by levelup.
Its probably telling my all time favorite grass type is breloom (who has Fighting secondary typing and does most of his damage with fighting or normal moves and gets the vampire line of grass moves to stay topped off or to kill the abundant water types of Hoenn).
Ice has always felt like its primary existence has been to slay dragons. Its usually 4x super effect against all the dragons in a game (flying and ground secondary typings being common in gens 1-4). I think a buff to it should include becoming super effective against fairy and making icetypes available earlier in the games. As of now alot of ices value can be gained by just teaching icebeam to a non-ice special attacker and using it as coverage and avoiding ice's bad defensive matchups.

    • @bulborb8756
      @bulborb8756 2 года назад

@@jasonreed7522 there's also the fact that thanks to breloom's fighting type, it's got access to rock moves to deal with its issues against flying and fire, plus fighting has a vampiric move in drain punch.
however the lack of physical dark and poison moves is worth noting as this means breloom is vulnerable to psychics, ghosts and fairies (i'd also say poison...but it's not often fighting gets ground or psychic moves)

But water is so much ahead of the other two, arguably top 3 definitly top 5 type in the game, that it really make the trio feel unbalanced. The changes I would make would be this: Grass resists Rock and Fairy. This would make it weak to 5 types (Fire, Ice, Poison, Bug, and Flying), and resist 5 types (Water, Ground, Rock, Electric, and Fairy). Grass resists rock because plants grow on rock, and Grass resists Fairy because fairies rely on plants so they don’t want to harm them. You could also make Grass completely immune to Fairy type attacks rather than just resisting them. Offensively, I can see Grass being effective against Fairy and Electric due to plants absorbing light. Grass can get natural Ground, Rock, and Fairy coverage. Ground can threaten Fire, Poison, and Steel types. Rock coverage can threaten Bug, Flying, Fire, and Ice types. Fairy coverage can threaten Dragon types. This would allow Grass to hit the types it would normally resist or are strong against it for super effective damage. So what do you think? Does this fix Grass?

Grass pokemon do have their unique positive traits, for sure. They balance sun against rain by countering water types and getting speed in sun, they have their powder moves the best user by far being amoongus with rage powder and spore, and being immune to them makes them important as switch ins, and much like poison, while bad on its own grass has some really good combination typing with its resistances to common powerful attacking types in ground and water. Grass as a solo type is generally bad though, and if they buff its type chart much they risk making the grass/poison and grass/steel pokemon unbalanced.
