I'm still wondering why Bug hasn't had a full legendaries. The only thing close is the mythical Genesect (and the ultra beasts Buzzswole and Pheramosa if you're like that.)
Gen. 4 is where I think Bug types gets alot better than the previous since it introduced some cool ones, bringing back the great ones like Scizor & Heracross and introduced new moves that makes them solid. But I agree that Gen. 5 Bugs gets an whole lot better than ever and it's the reason that I'm becoming an fan of Bugs.
@@jjc4924 Absolutely. The completely necessary high-power physical and special - X-Scissor and Bug Buzz (which, like, why did that first come there...? oh well)
"When making Pokemon, i thought back to my times as a child catching bugs out in a forest on my own. Then I thought about how much it sucked and I hated it, so I made all the bugs shitty and really bad out of spite. Take that, bugs. Take that, you stupid insects."
The worst type in Gen 1 are a threeway tie between Dark, Steel and Fairy. They're basically non existant. Dark and Steel got better in Gen 2 but Fairy still took a few gens before it was actually good.
currently already playing Omega Ruby with a pure bug team and it isn't as bad as you would think, the only problem is HM's really, no available bug learns any of the water HMs. Roxanne is easily dealt with through beautifly's grass draining attacks and surskit's bubblebeam (though you do need to lvl to 17 for that), Brawly is a pushover and by the time you get to mauville I had a shedinja which only his voltorb could do anything against. On top of all that, OrAs makes it easier with the dexnav, letting you get a surskit with hydropump if you so desire for instance
Hope everyone is having a good day. Look forward to Part 2 soon! Edit: Bug beats Poison in Gen 1, meaning that Bugs actually do pretty well against Erika, Koga, and even Agatha to an extent! However, taking FR/LG and Let's Go into consideration, they still maintain their status as the worst type in Kanto.
The strongest bug type moves in gen 1 are pin missile and twin needle which are either on Pokémon with weak attack or Pokémon that aren’t very good so bug is still the worst even if the type chart says otherwise
For Parasect, *use Spore* . Seriously, use it. If you can survive a hit, take the hit and Sleep stuff with it. Gen I sleep is way overpowered, and although Leech Life is super weak, the game is _not_ equipped to deal with you actually having a Bug move later into the game. If there's any Bug worth using outside of mechanics abuse, it's Parasect.
@@moblinmajorgeneral yeah parasect is really underrated in gen 1 but it’s more spore and the gen 1 sleep mechanics that are really good rather than the bug type.
Dishonorable mentions: Gen I: Rock. The reasons are numerous, from Rock Throw having 30 less accuracy in Gen I, only having 1 Rock Slide TM, being 4x weak to Grass and Water until Cinnabar Island, and most having awful Special, anyway. And it doesn't get better over time. Gen II: Bug. I feel like this one is self-explanatory, although Heracross in HGSS does give it the edge over grass. Hoenn: Poison. Don't let Crobat fool you, Poison in Hoenn is torturous. Wattson has a Magneton, Flannery has a Camerupt in Emerald, and Tate & Liza you flatout lose to. And there's no Grass specialist to make it better. Sinnoh: Fire. Highly limited pool (especially in DP) and 3 specialists with a steep advantage against you, as well as the scariest Pokemon in the game.
@@jjc4924 It depends in whicho Hoenn game you are playing. In RS and ORAS, Fire is useful against Steven at the end. In Emerald, Wallace will destroy any fire type in your team. But you are right, in Hoenn fire types arent that needed. A fighting type is much better for a playthrough. I can make a case that Blaziken have better match ups with its fighting typing beyond the first gym.
I hard disagree in Rock being the dishonorable in Gen 1, simply because all of the Rock-types are also Ground-types, and Rock-types also have a great matchup against the second-best type in Gen 1, that being the Normal-type. They also completely and utterly DESTROY Agatha and Koga, and Lance doesn't fare exceedingly well against them either due to his flying-heavy team (though it's a toss up regarding Gyarados), and the Rival also heavily dislikes the Rock-type, with at least two of his Pokemon being weak to them (and likely three), those being Pidgeot, his Fire-type, and, if you didn't pick Charmander, Gyarados. I'd also somewhat disagree with Fire being the dishonourable for gen 4, even in DPPt, because one of those fire-types happens to be the absolutely amazing Chimchar line, which renders Roark a moot point, though Wake and Bertha are still kinda tough. Completely dumping on Aaron is a bonus, though!
@Muhammad Ali Imran im sorry but your points don’t really work. You mention vileplume as a good option but that’s not because it’s a poison type, it’s because it’s a grass type. If it were just grass type, it would likely do better overall. For starters, instead of being destroyed by tate & liza, it would actually destroy them without poison. Also the defense about muk, weezing and swalot having a good move pool and tentacruel being fast doesn’t really matter. Lots of other pokemon also have good movepools and/or are faster. Sure you can use poison types if you want, not saying they’re bad, it’s just that if you do use them, the fact that they’re poison type is not the main reason you want to use them.
@@complaingel Leech life was an early game move, being outclassed by the time you reach Erika Pin Missile is decent, but how many actually learn them? Twinneedle is a good move, but only Beedrill learn it
The first time I ever played pokemon, I was on SoulSilver. And, knowing pretty much nothing about the pokemon I was picking from, I picked Chikorita. And I never regretted it, no matter how hard I inadvertently made it on myself. Chicky, as I named the poor thing, is one of my favorite starters that I've ever raised.
Chikorita was my first starter on OG Silver, but I ended up getting frustrated as a stupid kid not understanding pokemon that I restarted and chose Typhlosion and pretty much used it + Lugia for everything. A few years later when I understood how types and moves worked I did it again with Chikorita and had way more fun. Meganium is good but most people don't get how to use it properly. Meganium in Radical Red gets part fairy type and the "triage" ability - meaning that all healing moves (giga drain, synthesis etc) get +1 priority. It's really cool. My favourite pokemon other than Togetic.
See this makes me proud of sweeping Brawly's gym back in the day with a Dustox, panicking the whole time because the rest of my team just did not survive and the Dustox blew my mind
Yeah, the Wurmple line is surprisingly a really good counter to Brawly, as both quad resist Fighting and quickly learn a super-effective move (Gust or Confusion).
Did you not play X and Y? You can have a pokemon of every type before the second gym there, with 13 of the 18 types being available before the first gym.
@@samuelline9573 Axew too, i think. I distinctly remember Dual Chop being completely broken. Edit: yep, it's REAL early. In the Zubat cave, before you even get the second pokedex.
Gen 7 also has some pretty early dragon types (bagon & noibat come to mind), but it still lacks early ice types EDIT- The ultra games also make ice types available in the first island, so it looks like every type can be obtained before you reach the second one
@@korrochime2432 i try to forget early-game Alola tbh. Those tutorials are brutal. Even the Kingdom Hearts 2 prologue can't hold a candle to that slog.
I watched a soul silver nuzlocke, they went with the id method of getting the starter and they got chikorita, they actively tried to kill it and it was able to live through out the entire journey, long live mr. stake
It had a close call against Misty, though. [The foe's Starmie used Ice Beam!] [A critical hit!] [It's super effective!] [Mr. Stake snapped out of confusion!] [Mr. Stake used Frenzy Plant!] [It's super effective!] [The foe's Starmie fainted!] [Mr. Stake gained 1197 Exp. Points!] [Mancrobat gained 1197 Exp. Points!] [Player defeated Leader Misty]
Leaf stones can be given by a female trainer in the route down goldenrod city. So you are wrong. I remember myself using a Victreebel during the johto part of the game.
I've recently been going through Crystal on 3DS, and when I looked up how to evolve my Weebinbell I just deleted every trainer's number I had except that one girl until I got the stone.
"Unless you're a compulsive grinder and really want that Vibrava..." Me: How did you know? Actually, i go all the way to Flygon before Winona unless i'm feelin' lucky against Norman.
It's a yes-and-no. Bug was strong against Poison, but Poison was strong against Bug. And Poison-type Pokemon were better than Bug-type Pokemon stat-wise while even the worst Poison-type move was better than the best Bug-type move.
@@pforgottonsoul Specifically, Leech Life was like 25 power, maybe 30. And Pin Missile was 15 power per pin, hitting 2 to 5 times for a max 75 power, but averaging 45 power off of three needles. Despite Bug-type moves being Physical and Alakazam having low Defense and meh HP, a Jolteon wasn't even guaranteed to OHKO the psychic kitty.
I recently got a copy of crystal. I decided since I picked cyndaquil on VC gold and totodile on SoulSilver I’d pick Chikorita on this playthrough Big Fuckin Mistake
7:12 "grass types are barely usable in claire's gym despite her ace being kingdra" I don't get what you mean by this, kingdra is neutral to grass, so of course it doesn't give an edge to grass types.
I did a only psyquic type run in emerald, and I gotta say he is right, at the beginning I only had ralts and abra which learn only psyquic type moves, and with the insane amount of poochyenas and carvahnas it was a rough time.
I recall that in Diamond and Pearl, the only fire types available before the post game were Rapidash and Infernape, though this was improved a little in Platinum
Yes. In Diamond & Pearl; the only Fire type Pokemon that are available are Chimchar & Ponyta. But in Platinum; they added Flareon, the Houndour line, the Magby line, & if you wonna count Heat Rotom. And in postgame, you get an Heatran, Numel, Slugma & I think Torkoal.
i started playing pokemon with crystal and i chose chikorita and i caught a pidgey and THATS IT i beated the game with only these two even tho i had no knowledge about the game and that makes me a grand master
@@justsomeguywithgreyhair1824 Oof yeah. I had a full team, but your two pokemon gain exp faster than most species, so they’d be way overlevel compared to a team of 5/6
my butterfree did well against posion and fighting type pokemon with confusion and helped me defeat sabrina easier by putting her abra kadabra and alakazam to sleep allowing me to switch into nidoking and destroy them all with body slam before they woke. it even defeated bruno's hitmonlee and hitmonchan and 1 of agatha's 2 genghars I'm talking about my butterfree from my last yellow playthrough which I used as a main team member the only main move I had it use was confusion but I did have it use sleep powder against Sabrina's abra kadabra and alakazam and defeated her with nidoking. I used it through the whole playthrough my team was pikachu butterfree victrebell primeape and nidoking I never got past agatha I broke my phone 1 day and had to get a new 1 and never beat that copy but it was still fun to play though.
Correction about gen 1: Beedrill wrecks Erika. Bug is also super effective against Poison in gen 1. All Grass / Poison mons are 4x weak to Bug moves. So Twinneedle wrecks her big time. Didn't test my Beedrill against Koga, yet. Agreed with the rest tho.
If you take all eight currently existing versions of the Kanto games (Red, Blue INT/Green, Blue JP, Yellow, FireRed, LeafGreen, Let's Go Pikachu, Let's Go Eevee) into account, Bug is still the worst for Kanto. I didn't put the Johto versions of Kanto on there because you'd likely have plenty of better and stronger Bug types by the post-game.
@@JPRPokeTrainer98 true true. Wasn't meant in a bad way tho. Didn't know that too untill my latest playthrough either and I've played since all the way back then. Just never bothered to actually use Beedrill after the first gym in Gen 1.
Beedrill does fairly well against Sabrina in the remakes with the correct strategy. Source: FlygonHG, who did a mono Poison run on FRLG and had a Beedrill, who swept Sabrina by taking out Kadabra with Twinneedle then setting up one Agility before knocking out Mr. Mime and then outspeeding and OHKOing Alakazam before taking down Venomoth.
For my Gold playthrough, I used a defensive Meganium with Light Screen, Reflect, Body Slam, and Giga Drain, and Milekee (nickname) was a beast, notably holding his own against Red's Snorlax 14 levels higher.
In gen 1, bug and poison hit each other super effectively. While this does give Bug more credit than you gave them for in situations such as against Erika’s gym, the poor move distribution does still heavily hinder the type.
Not that great of a sp def,not that fast, not super effective on gallade but hopefully you have a crobat, actually lose to bronzong. Cinthya is actually easier, source: my monotype, level capped, even potion usage, mono platinum playthrough
Gonna take a wild guess and say psychic for gen 7. Despite getting some pretty decent Pokemon like alolan raichu, there’s a lot of pain to be had, especially in ultra sun and moon. Let’s see you’ve got either a gumshoos or raticate both with bite, the bug type Araquanid with the buffed leech life, alolan marowak with hex, totem lurantis with x scissor, vikavolt in vanilla sun and moon with bug bite, mimikyu with Shadow claw and leech life as well as battles with Guzma, Nanu and Acerola. It’s a pretty bad time for psychic. Literally the only saving grace for the trials is that you can get a malamar which you can teach topsy turvy to make the totem Pokemon easier.
I need to call something. While Bug was weak to Poison in Gen 1, Poison was also weak to Bug. This meant that every Pokémon in the Celadon Gym (except for Tangela) was quad weak to Bug. This doesn't change the overall result, but I still feel it was worth noting.
Its interesting that Psychic was one of your runners up for worst type in gen 3. The thing is that you have Ralts and Abra early who evolve into pure powerhouses. It doesn't matter that Psychic isn't great (Gardevoir can learn some great coverage). If you are stuck with average psychic types I'd agree that they suck.
I would also add Fire being worst types to use in Gen. 3 because; besides the Torchic line, none of them; old or new, aren't that good. There isn't that many Fire types to capture and there's so many Water type Pokemons in Hoenn that's just to much to handled. About 4 or 5 out of 8 Gym Leaders can beat them out easily. Such as Roxanne ( if you choose Torchic ), Flannery ( including her Camerupt because it's part Ground type ), Winona ( if only you have Combusken & Blaziken out since there part Fighting types and not even Marcargo that; despite being part Rock type that has the advantage against Flying types, will have an hard time because of it's poor stats, Altaria and maybe another one can learn Earthquake ), the Psychic twins because of Lunatone & Solrock ( and both Combusken & Blaziken will have troubled because again; they're part Fighting types ) and Juaz ( or Wallace if your playing Ruby & Sapphire only ). 3 out of Elite Four can beat it down that have the super advantage; which are the Dragon Elite Four, an Ghost Elite Four beacuse her 2 Dusclops learns Earthquake and even the Ice type Elite Four since 3 of them are part Water types. And I don't know how well they do with the Champion Steven if your playing Ruby & Sapphire only. But in Emerald; they'll definitely will have trouble with Champion Wallace since your fighting another Water type specialist.
yeah, fire does struggle quite a lot in Hoenn due to the sheer mass of water, and yeah aside from blaziken and MAYBE camerupt, the rest of the flames aren't anything to write home about as fire loses to Roxanne, Tate & Liza as well as Wallace on top of being useless against Team Aqua, however they do have a good performance against Glacia and Steven which is sadly their only good match up (however Glacia is an issue due to her having a couple water types)
To be fair, in oras, if you have a dustox, it learns quiver dance, bug buzz, toxic, and venoshock, which is a powerful stab combo, or you could swap out toxic and venoshock for sludge bomb and a coverage move
I feel like Fire should get an honorable mention in (non-platinum) gen 4. They have a few nice matchups, but unless you picked the fire starter, you're not exactly drowning in Fire types to choose from!
You can't really blame Meganium for being kneecapped in Johto when it was the fault of the developers for deciding that the first of the only two mono-Grass starters should be in the region in which the first two gyms are specifically designed to kneecap Grass
Fire is the useless type in diamond/pearl. It was the most needed type through the entire story, yet, we only got 2 fire types, and both super fragile sub par Pokemon, and they are a no go in some gyms like rock and water, and a steep road with the elite 4 except aaron
I see this as an excellent opportunity to run through ORAS with a mono bug team. Since the games are so easy it should make for a fun challenge, I was already considering this idea because during a wedlocke I did my Dustox and Volbeat both did really well, which really goes to show how easy the games are. A team of Dustox, Beautifly, Volbeat, Illumise, Ninjask and Shedinja might actually be viable here, though probably still pretty hard.
You're underselling Butterfree w/ confusion. It can do a surprising amount of damage. I agree bugs are weak but I'll forever have a Butterfree in my six, when playing Blue.
I'd honestly give Johto to Dark type. Why? You can't even use it! There are five dark types in Johto (Umbreon, Murkrow, Houndour, Sneasel, and Tyranitar). Four are only available in Kanto, two of which can only be gotten after getting all 16 badges. If you evolve the gift Eevee into anything other than Umbreon and don't breed it, you are completely blocked off of using any dark types until post game. EDIT: I learned Sneasel can be found in the Ice Path....in only Crystal.
I love the fact that I decided that for my first playthrough of Silver (on the virtual console), I was gonna use Chickorita because it was literal garbage, I didn't really like tododile at the time, and my Crystal save had cyndaquil as my starter. I even named the save after the typing of the starter. (And, no, the trainer name wasn't grass. It was Rye.)I adored that save, and have no recolection on how the heck I beat the first gym, as I know I didn't overlevel, or even catch another pokemon. What was I doing? The save is fun though.
Great video, but I have to point out that while Poison is super effective on Bug in gen 1, Bug is also super effective against Poison this gen. So for Erika, Bug is actually amazing, most of them have secondary typings of Poison, Flying and Grass meaning they resist grass by x4, and Grass/Poison types are x4 weak to Bug. Seeing as Victreebel and Vileplume have no damaging poison moves, Beedrill would demolish them. Koga is tougher with poison attacks but still weak to Bug, plus Bug/Poison type take neutral damage so they have a better matchup. Just wanted to make that clear for anyone interested in gen 1 games
k, im a sinnoh baby, and i play diamond, even i know the fire starter is op in this game, i beat the eltie 4 with 4 pokemon, one being a level 17 bibarel. plus, diagla level 54, staraptor level 54, and my level 60 starter. it was easy, just used a lot of heals and revives. i dont even like it, i perfer the water starter. however even i cant deny its an amazing starter.
I’ve been in the middle of a bug mono type run on Omega Ruby without thinking about how messed up I’m gonna get. I have spent the last few sessions doing EV resets and training on the Super Training because it’s getting tough, especially when trying to keep a level cap there for the gyms/bosses/rivals etc.
I’d love to see an updated version that includes Paldea, considering there’s a specialist for every type since there’s a lot of major battles including gym leaders, Elite Four members, Team Star leaders, Titans, Nemona, Penny, Arven, and the Professor Battle
1:24 Beedrill matches up pretty well with Misty's Starmie since you get Twineedle at Level 20, which is typically around the level your team will be when you fight her
I'd actually argue that fire types are even worse then the bug types in gen 3 some more points for the bug types: - heracross, armaldo and pinsir is are still pretty good pokemon - shedinja, ninjask and volbeat are not as bad as you make them out to be, shedinja outright walls a lot of pokemon, often giving him free attacks when they have to switch. ninjask gets swords dance really early, making it a good sweaper in early game and can baton pass those boosts in late game. volbeat gets signal beam and tail glow early on and a lot of good tms. they still aren't amazing, but still can have some use - if you are playing emerald, bugs minus armaldo have a neutral matchup against wallace compared to their losing matchup against steven - if you are playing ORAS pretty much all of the bugs become waaaay better - Masquerain and Beautifly both get quiver dance and bug buzz making them pretty usable - all the physical bug types gets stuff like x-scissor and or u-turn - with the dexnav you can get a lot of their great hidden abilities or egg moves, like moxie on pinsir and heracross and prankster on volbeat and illumise - pheobe only has a super effective move agains bugs in emerald with rock slide, and a lot of the bugs get shadow ball or a dark type move to deal super effective damage to phoebe and heracross, armaldo and pinsir gets a strong earthquake for good neutral damage. this one is way more neutral then it is bad for the bugs. - tate and liza only has rock slide in ORAS where all the bugs are noticably better so a lot of them can just outspeed and one shot the solrock before it can even use it. in RS you only have to deal with flamethrower from solrocks base 55 special and in emerald claydol also has ancientpower. i think this matchup is more even then it is losing. points against the fire type: - the only fire types in hoenn are blaziken, camerupt, torkoal, magcargo and ninetails. out of these the only one i would say are any good are, blaziken and maybe early to mid game camerupt. besides blaziken and nintails the fire types in hoenn are also really slow. which makes them really hard to use - the fire types has a losing matchup agains maxie which always has a scary ground type move on his camerupt. archie i'd still not consider a great matchup even if his sharpedo never has a water move. crunch still hits hard tho. - all the fire types can struggle a bit with winona. she has a peliper with water gun and an altaria with earthquake. they beat skarm and tropius pretty cleanly. its still gonna be a bit of a struggle. - all the fire types can't really deal with tate and liza at all, both solrock and lunatone resist allmost all of their moves, claydol has earthquake, and ORAS solrock has rock slide. so i'd say that is a losing matchup as well. - glacia is not a positive matchup for the fire types at all, besides maybe for blaziken. over half her team is bulky water types with thick fat, i have no idea how the rest of the fire types can deal with that at all. - the entierty of drakes team resist fire with with bunch of them knowing eathquake or some other ground move. in emerald he also gets a kingdra with surf. i'd also consider this a losing matchup. - steven isn't really a good for them either. half his team har earthquake and 2 more has anchientpower. he only has 2 pokemon that are actually weak to fire. the only 3 pokemon who has a chance of beating his ace one on one is ninetails, blaziken and maybe torkoal. the other 2 just gets outsped and one hit ko-ed by earthquake. i don't think its a straight losing matchup but its definitly not great. - in emerald you have wallece lmao - the fact that a huge chunk of the game will be spent facing mostly water type pokemon. and the fact that 2 out of the 5 fire types are 4x weak to water and that 3 out of the 5 fire types has a base speed under 40 doesn't help at all. - ORAS doesn't do as much for the fires as it does for the bugs. - ninetails does actually become pretty good in ORAS. getting drought, really good coverage moves and calm mind or nasty plot. - magcargo and torkoal get shell smash, but they are realistically too slow to get much good use out of it. TLDR. the only good fire types in gen 3 are blaziken and ORAS ninetails. RSE ninetails is just too weak without a movepool and the rest are too slow in a region that has an abundance of fire resists, earthquake and water. they don't have a good matchup against any of the important battles and there are a bunch of battles especially towards the end that they struggle hard with. they have 0 winning and 5+ losing. while bugs has 2 winning and 5- losing.
"If you beat the game with only Chikorita you truly are a Pokemon master." I beat everything including Red, no items in battle with Chikorita. And I'm not joking when I say this but he actually undersells how hard it really is. Because not only are you weak to every gym but you are weak to almost every random trainer too. There are a ton of random poison, bug, and flying trainers making even harder. When you get to Kanto after brute forcing your way through the elite 4 it doesn't get easier. Your stats are so low that you're still going to struggle vs Blaine, Jasmine, Erika, and Blue. For clarification it took me being level 90 to beat the elite 4, level 98 to beat Blue and level 100 to beat Red and I still barely managed to beat him. It ultimately came down to good RNG.
In gen 1 and only gen 1 bug was also super effective against poison, with poison super effective against it. So a single bug move would be 4x effective against 2/3 of Erica's mons
In Gen 2 you can get the elemental stones, in the route before third GYM theres a girl that gives you her phone number after battle, Her team members are 2 hoppy and bulbasaur I guess, she then will call you and she can either just talk about her pokemons, challange you again, or tell you that she has someting for you, it turns out to be a leaf stone, the water stone is given to you by a fisherman after the 4 gym and obtain surf, go to the rout to the right and surf till you see a fisherman at the edge of the lake, battle him ant register his number then He will call you to speak or to said that He found something for you, that turns out to be a water stone
Hello! Just wanted you to know there were a couple of inaccuracies in the matchup/location chart for types. Psychic types can be acquired before Misty. Route 24 to the north has Abra in RB, Abra is in Route 6 in Yellow and LGPE, and Drowzee is on Route 11 in all games. In LGPE, Steel types can be acquired before Erika by trading a Diglett for an Alolan Diglett in Lavender Town (and a Sandshrew in Celadon if you're playing Pikachu). In LGPE, Ice types can be acquired before Erika with the Celadon trade either being Alolan Sandshrew in Pikachu or Alolan Vulpix in Eevee. Psychic types can be caught before the first gym in Johto, there are Unown in the Ruins of Alph. Fairy types can be encountered before Bugsy by hatching the Togepi egg. And in GS, Jigglypuff is a rare encounter on Route 46, so before Falkner. In Crystal, Ice types can be acquired directly after Bugsy. The Odd Egg has a chance to hatch into Smoochum, so with a few resets you could get an Ice type pretty early. Finally, you can get a Ghost type before Roxanne. Nincada can be found on Route 116 and evolved into Shedinja. It is a bit of a grind to Level 20, but it isn't the worst. This isn't to say the video is bad! I really enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to the next part. Also, this isn't a comprehensive list, just what I picked up on that would be (reasonably) possible.
I just finished the first half of soulsilver with mono grass without overlevelling/using items in battle. Almost every major battle is a real struggle, sleep powder is hugely important, as is the sunny day TM you can get after clearing out the radio tower. Tangrowth is definitely the MVP in that run, even though you can't really use him until victory road without overlevelling. Ancient power comes in clutch against almost all grass weaknesses
@@jjc4924 include rotom heat so we get houndoom,Flareon, rotom heat, rapidash, infernape, heatran, magmortor so more than you could expect there are more options edit heck I forgot numel and camerupt in post game 🤣
I’m currently doing a grass monotype on SoulSilver just because I knew that it was hard, and I have definitely had to take at least two tries for most of the gym battles so far (I’ve gotten through Whitney). I also managed to beat Falkner with only a Chikorita in Gold, but I had to level it up to level 15 to get through his fight in one try. In short, Grass + Johto is hard.
Actually I’d argue that in the original RBY that if you pick pick up a beedrill and teach it twineedle you’d e great to go for the entire game, it’s speedy so it would get a crit bonus too.
It's also good in FRLG, especially against the likes of Alakazam. You just need Agility in addition to Twinneedle. That's how FlygonHG swept Sabrina in a mono Poison run.
I do want to say that I chain caught caterpie until I got a perfect one that I trained up and then solo ran with as just a caterpie through the entire elite four in let’s go eevee. It tanked attacks from dragonite and two shot or one shot Pokémon with tackle. It was the let’s go games, but still. I also only healed between battles
I agree with you on most terms except for a minor few scenarios: 1. Bug being bad in LGP/LGE (because you forgot about the ridiculously useful "Fell Stinger") 2. Realistically gyms 4 and 7 can be conquered with not much difficulty, you just have to have good situational awareness considering you're at a defensive disadvantage.
Despite loving Chikorita, I found Meganium completely useless in Gen 2 compared to Bellossom, who became one of the best tanks I’ve used in any Pokémon game anywhere. Bellossom and Umbreon provided the back end defense to a well-rounded offence such that I could stall a Tyranitar twenty levels above me. Meganium, on the other hand, reliably fainted in one hit on every single gym leader I encountered and has the ignominious distinction of being the first starter I ever benched.
I actually did a Mono-Bug run in Alpha Sapphire and it was surprisingly not that bad. Then again with the additional moves added for Bug Pokémon in later generation made the game pretty smooth. The biggest challenges were Flannery(Masquerain doesn’t really do much even with Bubble Beam) Winona(I actually had to backtrack to get Anorith but even then her Altaria is still overwhelming to deal with) and unshockingly, the Elite 4 aside from Sydney. My team was Mega Heracross, Dustox, Illumise, Armaldo, Masquerain, and Shedinja as I found that they were the best Bug Pokémon you can use in the Horn region.
bug type moves in gen 1 actually did super effective damage to poison types so you might wanna change that : / bug types in gen 1 still suck, but a move like leech life would destroy her weepinbell/victreebel and gloom/vileplume, + the rival's bulbasaur (if you choose squirtle) not to mention they literally learn no damaging poison type moves via level up lol-
I feel like it also doesn't take into account the weird movesets gym leaders used and how broken certain moves were in gen 1. Butterfree with confusion and sleep powder actually held up okay against a bunch of different types on a standard playthrough because of how sleep worked back then. Hardly the best pokemon but definitely not as awful as it could have been. I'd have put Rock in for a close contender for worst since they all had pretty bad special, inaccurate rock moves and there were no pure rock types, making them all quad weak to grass and water. Their saving grace was having some pretty strong pokemon of the type and the ability to learn some great ground type moves.
I almost want to use this as a baseline for some challenges. HGSS though... Dont get me wrong cyndaquil line is my favorite but when i played the game using chikorita and its line only... it actually did pretty well. with synthesis, barrier/reflect, status moves, headbutt and several other options, it took some creativity but i did beat red with meganium. granted though as you pointed out its 1 grass type, but it is a solid pokemon. i think doing a grass only run is SS would be a fun challenge when i think about it
I'm so glad that from Gen 5 onwards the Bug type was shown some love and added some badass Mons to the roster. I really think Bug is underrated
Gen 5 Bugs are fantastic, glad to see them getting more love nowadays
I'm still wondering why Bug hasn't had a full legendaries. The only thing close is the mythical Genesect (and the ultra beasts Buzzswole and Pheramosa if you're like that.)
Gen. 4 is where I think Bug types gets alot better than the previous since it introduced some cool ones, bringing back the great ones like Scizor & Heracross and introduced new moves that makes them solid. But I agree that Gen. 5 Bugs gets an whole lot better than ever and it's the reason that I'm becoming an fan of Bugs.

The worst type in Gen 1 are a threeway tie between Dark, Steel and Fairy. They're basically non existant. Dark and Steel got better in Gen 2 but Fairy still took a few gens before it was actually good.
Can you really classify them as worst types of the gen when they were not basically but absolutely nonexistent??
What about the bug type its ussles until gen4/5
Lol
I can back up this statement. Before, gen 6, I never even used fairy types. That's how bad they were.
Dark and steel was created in gen 2

I’ll definitely use the worst mono for a new challenge.
Mono types are just fun in general
currently already playing Omega Ruby with a pure bug team and it isn't as bad as you would think, the only problem is HM's really, no available bug learns any of the water HMs.
Yup, I'll have to wait for the Galar one.
Have a great day :)
Saved me the trouble of being that annoying guy in the comments correcting you lol
Dishonorable mentions:
Gen I: Rock.
About Gen. 4; Platinum fixes that by adding more Fire types. And I would switch Poison into Fire that's the worst to use in Gen. 3.
@@jjc4924 Fair on both points
In Gen 1, Bug was actually super effective against Poison. So everything in Erika's Gym in the first games was weak to Bug
Shame only 1 bug attack existed back then and its power was such you were better using a x2 weakness (fire/flying/ice) than the x4 bug

I picked totodile best choice I've ever made
Chikorita is also the tastiest of them!
Chikorita also has the disadvantage in Johto that the first 2 gyms are literally anti-grass.
Chikorita was the best to keep the Johto games challenging in the early portions.

You are correct, I made an oversight about Bug beating Poison in Gen 1. I would still say that in FR/LG and Let's Go that Bug isn't very good though.

5:47 Crystal also fixes that problem with Picknicker Gina who will sometimes call you and give you a Leaf Stone.
I need to call something. While Bug was weak to Poison in Gen 1, Poison was also weak to Bug.
This meant that every Pokémon in the Celadon Gym (except for Tangela) was quad weak to Bug.
This doesn't change the overall result, but I still feel it was worth noting.
this vid was pretty cool def wanna see part 2 when its ready

Even with it's new beaf up an later gens, it still sucks.
Gamefreak really hated grass types in gen 2
My meganium was able to hold it's own in my Crystal playthrough
Disagree. I have a Ninetales in Ruby who’s an absolute beast
I ran a Parasect in FireRed once, and it was actually really good, one of the best Pokémon I ever used in a Gen 3 Kanto play-through.
I did a mono poison type for sinnoh, and I think sinnoh has the best lineup of poison types out there
Did the same thing earlier this year. Toxicroak, Drapion, Crobat, Skuntank, Gengar, this gen is indeed amazing for poison and what a fun playthrough
Monferno *cough* secondary typing *cough* coverage *cough* grass knot
Those who picked grass or water starters doesn't have that couch pokemon, and I already said that it is too fragile on certain areas
Thankfully gen 5 made bug types one of the coolest till this day.

1:24 Beedrill matches up pretty well with Misty's Starmie since you get Twineedle at Level 20, which is typically around the level your team will be when you fight her
In gen 3 Kanto Herracross with megahorn could demolish the gyms. That’s about it for bugs in gen 3 kanto. Lol
I'd actually argue that fire types are even worse then the bug types in gen 3
some more points for the bug types:
- heracross, armaldo and pinsir is are still pretty good pokemon
- shedinja, ninjask and volbeat are not as bad as you make them out to be, shedinja outright walls a lot of pokemon, often giving him free attacks when they have to switch. ninjask gets swords dance really early, making it a good sweaper in early game and can baton pass those boosts in late game. volbeat gets signal beam and tail glow early on and a lot of good tms. they still aren't amazing, but still can have some use
- if you are playing emerald, bugs minus armaldo have a neutral matchup against wallace compared to their losing matchup against steven
- if you are playing ORAS pretty much all of the bugs become waaaay better
- Masquerain and Beautifly both get quiver dance and bug buzz making them pretty usable
- all the physical bug types gets stuff like x-scissor and or u-turn
- with the dexnav you can get a lot of their great hidden abilities or egg moves, like moxie on pinsir and heracross and prankster on volbeat and
illumise
- pheobe only has a super effective move agains bugs in emerald with rock slide, and a lot of the bugs get shadow ball or a dark type move to deal super effective damage to phoebe and heracross, armaldo and pinsir gets a strong earthquake for good neutral damage. this one is way more neutral then it is bad for the bugs.
- tate and liza only has rock slide in ORAS where all the bugs are noticably better so a lot of them can just outspeed and one shot the solrock before it can even use it. in RS you only have to deal with flamethrower from solrocks base 55 special and in emerald claydol also has ancientpower. i think this matchup is more even then it is losing.
points against the fire type:
- the only fire types in hoenn are blaziken, camerupt, torkoal, magcargo and ninetails. out of these the only one i would say are any good are, blaziken and maybe early to mid game camerupt. besides blaziken and nintails the fire types in hoenn are also really slow. which makes them really hard to use
- the fire types has a losing matchup agains maxie which always has a scary ground type move on his camerupt. archie i'd still not consider a great matchup even if his sharpedo never has a water move. crunch still hits hard tho.
- in emerald you have wallece lmao
- the fact that a huge chunk of the game will be spent facing mostly water type pokemon. and the fact that 2 out of the 5 fire types are 4x weak to water and that 3 out of the 5 fire types has a base speed under 40 doesn't help at all.
I feel like fairy should be weak to bug. Idk why but I thought it was when I first played the games
Because most fairy types can learn psychic moves? I think fairy types are well balanced enough as is
This has been kn my recommended the whole day. I'll watch it now so RUclips will be pleased
Me: *watches the johto segment knowing I swept the likes of Whitney, Pryce and Clair with the chikorita line* Hmmm Interesting
Wait what
@@NotAlt3418 you read that right mate
"If you beat the game with only Chikorita you truly are a Pokemon master."
I beat everything including Red, no items in battle with Chikorita.
That's only in Crystal. Gold and Silver had no such luxuries.
Pikachu is a pikaCHUMP!
Alola and Galar: *confused screaming*
I just finished the first half of soulsilver with mono grass without overlevelling/using items in battle. Almost every major battle is a real struggle, sleep powder is hugely important, as is the sunny day TM you can get after clearing out the radio tower. Tangrowth is definitely the MVP in that run, even though you can't really use him until victory road without overlevelling. Ancient power comes in clutch against almost all grass weaknesses
Calling it, fire is gen4’s worst 😂🤣😂🤣
I mean just cause you can only get 2 in gen 4 doesn't particulary make it bad. Gen 1 had plenty of Bug types and it was still the worst.
Platinum fixes that now that they added Houndour, Flareon, the Magby line & Heatran.
@@jjc4924 include rotom heat so we get houndoom,Flareon, rotom heat, rapidash, infernape, heatran, magmortor so more than you could expect there are more options edit heck I forgot numel and camerupt in post game 🤣
Varun. Yep. That's why I'm pretending that Diamond & Pearl doesn't exist and we have an way better & improved version for Sinnoh.
This was a really well put together video.
Beedrill could poison steel types in gen 2 via glitch
I am impressed with your detail and consideration in your choices. You have a sub sir!
I will say, I played Leaf Green with Butterfree on the team all the way through, and Butterfree was very useful (though not due to Bug-type moves).
Me who had a Parasect my entire FireRed Nuzlock Run
_I feel personally attacked right now_
A solid episode of a man repeating the word bug? Can't wait!
Thank you so much for all videos you made. You are one of my absolutely best youtubers ever. :)
Jsi borec. Mám moc rád tvoji tvorbu.
