Yup steel tank! Somebody really big or some body jumped it to break all the spokes and bend one shock. The pipe was rusted out at the end so I made a end cap with the three holes so I could put my old xr100 spark arrestor in (the xr100 got a exhaust tip that makes it sound just like a 450 no joke). I had to put a clutch in it because it was slipping, ignition points, carb needed replaced, I put a cr250 rear fender on it. It always started and I rode it a lot, I wish I still had it it was a.....
Well the spokes are just as important as an oil change, they need tightening so they don't break. Half mine were broken when I bought mine. I also bought a 1980 xr80 with all the spokes broken, I bought a rear wheel and tossed it all together and it was a very good bike (I had do do a lot more then just the rim), traded that for a 97 cr80r (worth way more than the xr so I couldn't pass it up) then sold the cr for twice as much as I could have got for the xr and bought my black jeep
That's my 11 yo you heard. He out grew his CRF70, so his 8 yo brother got that. I wanted to start him on an crf or xr 80 for his first manual clutch bike, but I got a deal on this one. I might still get him an 80.
I have one I modded out, mines a 01. They kill the rear spokes but I put a heavy duty spoke kit in and now the spokes are twice the size so I don't have to worry about braking them wile jumping. I hear the kids riding this bike alot in the Oliver series I just finished :)
It would probably be cheaper to just buy a running xr100r then to buy 1 that is messed up. These things are practically bullet proof, they must have beat the heck out of the bike.
MxForever I think if you watch the whole series and see just how cheap the parts were you's agree fixing the bike was worth it. My son still rise it a lot.
Cobbled to get her bike but it always ran and drove good. Every thing was welded (shifter to shift shaft, rear brake rod, and other stuff). I might ask him that when his daughter grows out of it I can buy it back. It was probably worth $400 and I sold the cr for $675 so I couldn't go wrong. Originally I bought the xr80 for $120 and put $200 into it.
12 years later and this is by far the most useful series on Honda XR/XL if you're actually doing work, and not entertainment

Yeah. I have an old xr100r that I got from a guy for $200. All it needed was new oil, new oild filter, a new air filter, and new tires. Steve Watroba

Always fun to trade up for no money. Bet that 1980 had a steel tank eh?

I'm good, got a PDF somewhere, but thanks for the offer.
Did not know that about the spokes. I'm over 6 feet, 200 pounds, and I ride it, but my jumping days are long over, lol
did you put a new timing chain in the xr100
No, I reused the old one. It still is running fine.
I have the shop manual if you ever need any information
