    Watching this makes me believe we can prevent most of our injuries by taking time to massage most of our muscles.

    Omg!! This is EXACTLY the cause of my knee pain. Ortho couldn’t find anything wrong with xrays or moving my leg, or pressing down anywhere (since I went when I wasn’t feeling any pain). Always feel it after a run. Figured it out on my own massaging everywhere and started going at my IT band with a roller and after watching this and another video I was shocked that the pain started on my glute. I felt ZERO pain there until I started putting my weight on it with a roller and INSTANT pain shoots down to the side of my knee. I hope these new massages fixes my problem so I can run pain free again!

    Thank you so much for sharing this video. As a college athlete I’ve been struggling with IT band syndrome for over a year. Every time I thought the issues would be solved it would come haunting back. Now I’ve tried these methods myself and have had a week of zero pain on the outside of my left knee. I can finally walk to schools and use the stairs without excruciating pain. Thank you so much!

    I had pain outside my knee recently which I thought was an IT problem. The stretched on a tennis ball (tfl and glute) for a few days. No help. Saw a PT and she massaged the fascia underneath the fibula and that cured it.

    As an athletic trainer it is refreshing that someone is sharing the correct information. The IT Band rolling make me cringe to my core. Loosening the tensor fasciae latae, quads, glutes and hamstrings will have the most affect on the tissue. Muscle tissue is more responsive to soft tissue modalities, which the tendentious and ligament tissues take a longer time to affect. Thank you for spreading TRUTH!

    • @filthygaming6276
      @filthygaming6276 4 года назад +1

      jsj54 so don't foam roll IT bands?

    • @vikes54
      @vikes54 4 года назад

      Filthy Gaming if you look at the anatomy you can roll out your Vastus Lateralis (outer most quadriceps muscle) which happens to be deep too the IT band, so in a sense you will “roll out” your IT band, however this shouldn’t be the reason we foam roll that region, it should be for the quad muscle. This is why sometimes people will get some relief from rolling out the region the lateralis is loosened up. Like I mentioned in my previous comment, the primary muscles to focus on with soft tissue modalities would be the TFL (tensor fasciae latae) and the gluteus maximus, their tendons come together to form a junction point then runs distal to the hip (down the leg) as the IT band. For soft tissue to affect tendon-like tissue it would take a significant amount of force to affect the tissue in a short period of time (I will not claim to know the amount of pressure exactly, but there have been studies I have read that give the amount of pressures and it’s significantly more than can be generated by simply foam rolling). You can target tendons with instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), as long as you have received proper training, knowing how and why you are using this treatment and the current research that is continually coming forth with positive results. Often many practitioners use instruments to aggressively and damage the tissue further prolonging the healing not aiding the process, please be cautious if ever using instruments, but I digress. We need to be more focused in on muscles associated with the pain not just where the pain is located, even though it seems to be our primary concerned at that time. Clinicians with the proper knowledge should know their tissues and how treat them, however like any profession we need to constantly be learning current evidence-based practices to ensure our patients (in my case athletes) are getting the best care possible to return them to sport quickly, and MOST IMPORTANTLY safely.

      So sorry to hear that! Look for another therapist who does more manual therapy, and if your PT does, but doesn't have the time (which is common in the insurance model, many times providers want to do more, but are limited because insurance reimbursement is very low) ask if you can pay for additional sessions out of pocket to get more tissue work time!

    Thanks for this. I saw some videos recommending rolling the leg across the roller but it snaps the IT band, is very painful and I think counter productive. My own instinct is to roll the hamstring and quad on an angle that displaces the IT band and that is what you are recommending. I have balls and do work the upper glutes but that alone isn't always enough. I am going to do some yoga that will strengthen the glutes ( leg raises from belly down ) because I think that may be part of the problem. Will also lay on my side and raise my legs up and slightly back for the glute medius.
    I found I was able to approximate what you were doing by putting my leg on the roller at a slight angle, towards the hamstring or the quad, and then using my arms and hips the move my leg horizontally across the roller lengthways, pulling the IT band away from the muscle. I have to say that it didn't hurt much at all and I do feel a release.

    I apparently have IT band issues and hip bursitis. I haven't run for about 10 years and I'm 57 years old. All my physio does is give me bridge and side raise exercises to do at home. It's too painful to walk on for more than about 10 minutes and I'm at my wit's end with it.

    As a patient I assumed PT is a science but after 3 unsuccessful 6-month sessions to address my ITB issues I've learned no two therapists address ITB the same. I would gladly trade the 30 some stretch and strengthening methods for 3 that would work. I've wasted thousands of dollars and 4 years of my life and still no better.

    Awesome, thank you for this, i've been in pain for the past week just doing alot of HIIT workouts which has alot of squats and burpees, lunges etc it has irritated the pain, went for jog/run yesterday and today it is just very sore had no idea what it was so very glad i found this we'll do strecthing and use tape for support.

    My ortho couldn’t pinpoint the issue - just said my right knee cartilage (I had a hole under my knee cap) could be ‘catching’ but, would NOT recommend a clean up; just try to rest it and give it a few weeks to recover (same advice as GP). Hobbled around on crutches for 6 weeks (I’m right handed but high jumped left handed when I was a junior). This pain and recovery was 20x worse than my ACL left knee replacement 7 years prior (10 year old Netball injury). Fast forward 4 years to now (51yo; female, White collar job; no regular exercise) and the right knee pain ‘starts up’ again but, this time - 3months prior - I had a locking of my right hip which proceeded it. Hobbled around for two weeks then saw Chiro (for the very first time ever) because I also had recent loss of back m/shoulder flexibility; he had a holistic approach with physio’s and remedial massage staff at hand. I explained the symptoms and history and after an examination and some initial treatment the Chiro suggested it was an IT band issue. Four years ‘in the dark’ now ended🤦🏻‍♀️. Thanks for the video.
    Rolling above and below the IT band & trigger points pressure at the hip - as you had suggested - I was already doing (with weekly Chiro treatment) so, it was good to get that confirmation. After 5 weeks (1 session per week) - immediate after the Chiro session - I feel almost cured but my ‘DYI home treatment (& home yoga)’ was essential to maintain the improvement (going on 9 weeks now). Never AGAIN will I be sedentary again - my body just wont stand for it!🙏🏻
    I’m still singing the praise of my Chiro and hope my session will move to ‘maintenance only’ soon. On the bright side, I have benefit in many way from the Chiro sessions; flexibility has returned. I guess I have my IT band issue to thank for that! There is a silver lining after all.

    From Houston, TX here. I've seen 2 different chiropractors who did different things. I just started with a physical therapist but they are mostly talking about strengthening weak muscles. They also can do dry needling. My point is I don't see any of them providing this kind of treatment. I really think it should be essential for this type of injury. How can I search out this specific treatment in my area?

    • @themovementunderground2464
      @themovementunderground2464  6 лет назад

      Just keep searching, scheduling evaluations and keep in mind that there are sooooooo many different approaches to similar injuries/issues. The reality is if anything worked 100% of the time, we would all do the same things. Ask ciritcal questions of your providers...If it sounds like they are BSing you, or unsure...its because they are and its time to find someone else.! Hope this helps! Good luck!

    • @themovementunderground2464
      @themovementunderground2464  6 лет назад +4

      It depends on the case! I try to keep my athletes on the field with the understanding that rest doesnt necessarily fix anything. In cases where additional stress to the area is risking worsening of injury or symptoms, then I will have them rest! In most cases, I am able to help athletes recovery while they continue to train and participate in their sport. Its all about dosing treatment, training, and sport effectively

      Kevin Schmidt there are several types of scar tissue but the majority you will run into during massage or deep tissue work will feel like a really lumpy string of yarn wrapped in a layer of cellophane, if you single the tissue out and apply gentle force you can actually feel it crunch and crinkle like cellophane.

    • @DBCoopersGiblits
      @DBCoopersGiblits 6 лет назад

      Ally G well I have an update for you Ally, I've found it isn't the IT band that's "popping" over the fibula head, it is the Lateral Co lateral ligament. Or the LCL. I have had serious ankle sprains over the years and it has caused my lateral malleolus to become loose. Aka torn ligaments. I had my fibula head and malleolus "re set. As well as my knee. As long as I can keep it "in place" it doesn't pop over anymore! The way I pop it on my own is planting my foot and turning outwardly with my shin. Which gives a nice pop in the rear of my ankle. Or if I need to set my knee I plant my foot and my shin and turn outwardly which re sets everything in line with my ankle! Definitely won't be getting an ankle fusion surgery as long as I'm able to do this. Hope you get better!!

      There are a lot of great courses on IASTM. I really like the RockTape Blades courses, as they encompass so much more than just how to treat each area.

    what the f are the gloves for man??? this is physical therapy not invasive medical procedure... ART is great for muscle... Im glad you said there is no such thing as tight ITB, and it takes 2 tonnes of pressure to make any physiological change to ITB tissue... so yeah, don't work on the ITB directly... Nice work man... patient defo benefits
