Gilbert Burns is exactly what I would think Demain Maia would’ve been had he Evolved his Striking and his Wrestling

I mean Demian did evolve his wrestling, it's the entire reason he was able to implement his offensive BJJ with a greater level of success as his career went on: he developed a basic yet solid and effective wrestling game that really only failed against guys who were elite defensive wrestlers/grapplers in their own right. He arguably outwrestled Burns in the early part of their bout.
As for his striking, he actually went through a phase that the meme crowd dubbed "K1 Maia" where he tried to become a decent kickboxer and outstrike dudes during his Middleweight run, but it really didn't work out all that well. He had a few okay showings in the striking department throughout his career, but overall he doesn't have the explosiveness to match what Burns can do on the feet.
Maia and Burns are similar in that they're what I call "evolved BJJ" guys, but they have different skill sets IMO.

@@wendigo2046 A lot of good MMA grapplers -- hell of a good MMA *wrestlers* -- never developed super explosive blast doubles. It may be the signature wrestler's takedown, but it's not the end-all, be-all. He always relied on single-legs as his bread and butter, typically finishing them by running the pipe. It worked great against a lot of guys, but fell short against others (most lately Belal).
Watch some of his striking exchanges with Colby. Before he gassed out he was actually doing okay at boxing range with Covington. But yes, it goes without saying that his striking never got beyond "adequate for a BJJ specialist who is trying to get it to the ground", which may be a bit charitable. As for him lacking explosiveness and fast twitch muscle, I even said that he couldn't match Burns in that regard.
At the end of the day, Maia was a BJJ specialist in a time when such specialists were a dying breed who made the necessary adjustments in order to allow his primary offensive weapon to be brought to bear, becoming a perennial Top 10 guy and two-time title challenger in two different weight classes for years on end. No more, no less. I personally have enjoyed the ride.
Gilbert is a beast, this just shows how good Usman is
