- In this week's video, we take a look at the stopping power of the 10mm Auto. We are firing into synthetic ballistics gel at approximate FBI Standards with 180gr FMJ and 170gr and 180gr JHP. We also look at the difference in controlled firing speed, as well as testing penetration in the ballistics gel from a range of 50 meters.

I’m on the fence between Buffalo Bore and Underwood. I’ve had a bit better performance with Buffalo Bore but since underwood is more available and right around the same numbers I can’t complain. Both REAL 10mm loads
Double tap 200 grain is a spicy round
Stopping power from a handgun is kind of a misnomer. The the 10mm Auto is a powerful handgun round, especially by the standards of semi-automatic duty pistol cartridges. I EDC a Glock 20, and have for a couple decades now. My first was a Gen III, and I have now supplemented it with a Gen IV. I like to remind people that the 10mm Auto is a duty cartridge first, a woods cartridge second. Too many people these days seem to think of the 10mm as mostly useful for hunting and bear defense. It is adequate for those tasks; I have taken several deer with my Glock 20s and my Underwood 200 gr XTP carry load, and do carry it is grizzly country with 200 gr hardcasts, but it was designed for duty and self defense against two-legged predators, and remains exemplary for that task.
That being said, all 10mm ammo is not created equal. Mike McNett probably single-handedly saved the 10mm Auto from obscurity selling his handloads out of his garage in the late 90s, and starting Double Tap Ammunition in the early 2000s. The demand for full power 10mm Auto was always there, and those of us who like the 10mm showed out appreciation to Mike my making him a millionaire. Double Tap Ammunition continues to make some of the best Norma+ spec 10mm Auto ammo you can buy anywhere. Other boutique ammunition manufactures saw the success Mike was having and soon got in on the action. Underwood is perhaps the best known, and they too make some superlative quality ammo loaded to "real 10mm" specs. I think their 180 and 200 gr XTP loads are among the best on the market, as the Hornady XTP seems to handle full power 10mm velocities better than most. These bullets get good expansion, and continue to expand as they drive deep into the vitals. They don't over expand or lose a bunch of their mass, like many JHP designs intended for the .40 S&W. Buffalo Bore and Grizzly Cartridge Co also get in on the action, but I never appreciated how Buffalo Bore loads outside of SAAMI specs and then blames the gun is something goes wrong, and Grizzly Cartridge Co has some quality control issues that need to be addressed. I've gotten some 200 gr XTP loaded by Grizzly that went passed the Lab Radar from a 4.6 inch Glock barrel at 1350 fps. I like a full power 10mm load, but that is for sure dangerously overpressure.
Still waiting on the big ammo manufactures to realize the increasing popularity of the 10mm Auto is due to its performance, and anyone who wants .40 S&W level performance already has a .40 S&W. Most of the big manufactures have yet to get on the full power 10mm bandwagon, and it is their loss. Some people are making a lot of money selling full power 10mm Auto, it just isn't them.
@@johnklatt3522 The last boxes of the Underwood I bought was a few years ago and still had the warning not to shoot in the Delta Elite. Ammo has been scarce, so I haven't been shooting up my defense ammo. I practice with 200 gr plated handloads. It would be a shame if they really reduced there loads to accommodate a single pistol. Obviously, there is all sorts of watered down weak shit available for the Deltas to shoot, or they can have a new barrel fitted as you did.

@@bigandy2109 Still Underwood 200 gr XTPs. The Doubletap 200 gr Controlled Expansion is good stuff too. I like the XTPs for magnum velocity handguns and have been impressed with their performance and consistency in .357 Magnum, 10mm Auto, and .44 Magnum. They don't open as wide as some, but they expand deeper in the body and do better with full power 10mm velocities than most other bullets.
The SIG VCrown is decent; better than most big name brands. I still prefer stuff from boutique manufactures like Doubletap and Underwood.

@@pronewbofficial No. I remain skeptical of gimmicks. I tend to rely on proven technology. A good JHP, like a Gold Dot or XTP, with an established reputation for consistent performance; I tend to prefer controlled expansion and deep penetration, loads most people associate with hunting medium game. I like a load with a momentum of over 30 gr ft/sec, a sectional density of at .16, and an impact velocity that is at least supersonic, preferably by a considerable margin. The goal is to see the body of the wound channel, that portion where the bullet is expanding, go into the back half of the block of gel. Most common police loads in common service cartridges have little to no neck, so they begin expanding immediately on contact, but they have fully expanded and settled down by the time they reach 8 inches into the gel block, and the last half of the wound channel is the tail, where the bullet has settled and has enough momentum to penetrate, but not enough velocity to expand. This part of the wound tends to be narrow and uncomplicated, and in living tissue means the bullet has a good chance of pushing it aside rather than penetrating it if hit at an oblique angle. This means these loads do most of their damage relatively shallow, before they get inside the chest cavity where large blood-bearing structures are. I like rounds that have controlled expansion and enough momentum, SD, and velocity to expand in the second half of the gel block, so they are still actively deforming and chewing up tissue when they get deep in the body. I don't care if they have a little bit of neck before they start expanding, and I don't care if it "over penetrates" by some standards.
I just tend to find what works and stick with it. My wife knows what I eat at every restaurant, because I never change or experiment. I know what works for me and I am hesitant to embrace new technology. I've seen XTPs perform on game. I know they consistently provide the performance I am looking for. I am not likely to abandon this chasing the latest and greatest. If I was to experiment, it would be with another JHP with a good reputation for cleanly harvest 300 pound mammals with one round to the thoracic cavity; a Nosler or a Gold Dot perhaps. But heavy for caliber and driven fast, like Jeff Cooper intended from the 10mm.

Thanks for the great video. I've been on the fence over getting a 10mm barrel for my G21 since I'm already set up for .45 Super but there's no doubt that 10mm popularity has skyrocketed over the last 5+ years. Kudos to Phil on that first 50 meter shot, that was about as close to a perfect shot as I think was even possible.
You do realize you need the whole upper not just a barrel, right?
@@stevepardini588 Not true, all you need is a 10mm conversion barrel, a G20 extractor (which works with .45acp as well) and recoil spring. As well as a mag of course. If I had the money I'd get an entire upper just because it's easier to swap in between each other but it's not necessary.

I also am a fan of the 10MM carried a GLOCK 20 with 175 gr Winchester Silver tip JHP ammo on duty. Today I have a Kimber 1911 Camp Guard and Springfield XDM 4.5," 10MM. The 1911 platform is my personal favorite, long used (1911) over my lifetime. Interesting video on one of my favorite caliber pistols.

I recently bought the S&W M&P 2.0 10MM and absolutely Love it.. Great all around cartridge.
I have the M&P as well, & it's my favorite pistol, despite being the most basic one I have (no red dot, light/laser).
I carry a 1911 Gov in 10mm unless I know I am going to be in a crowded area. Then I carry a 40 or 9mm. To change things up I sometimes carry a 45. I feel comfortable shooting the 10 mm beyond 50 yards. Not so with any other caliber other than a 357 mag but it is a bit hard to conceal. I shoot 165gr Sig V crown in the 10mm and according to my data they run about 1350 fps. They will do the job if need be!
A 10mm with Underwood 135 grain ammo will penetrate less than a .45 and it will do a lot more too.

You can’t join the 10mm club with a hi point. Section 3.2 in the 10mm club rule book clearly states no hi points or Taurus allowed.

I have two 10mm pistols. S&B makes two different HP rounds. I wish you could test them sometimes. S&B is my go to for my ammo lately. Never a problem in any caliber.

I’ve always wanted a 10 .. .357 Sig is the most powerful caliber I own ... which is more than enough for anything I’ll ever do .. but I still want a 10 as bad as I hate to acquire another caliber to buy ..
Try a Federal 10 mm 200 grain HST round. It gets real fun. I own glock 20, xdm elite 10mm 3.8 inch, and a Ivor & Johnson 6 inch longslide 1911.
I got 3 boxes last month, it was either too expensive or not available.
I shoot that out of Glock 29 it cranks up the RPMs.

This is my personal opinion, I've looked into dozens different 10mm loads, and this is what I discovered. These rounds used aren't even close to full power 10mm. They aren't moving fast enough, hence the over penetration (excluding the fmj). I've noticed when people use subcompact/ compact pistols, 10mm tends to not open up reliably unless you're using lighter and faster rounds. The 180gr should be hitting 1300 fps minimum for reliable expansion. A vast majority of main line ammunition companies selling 10mm load them to 40 s/w specs that's HUGE issue and one present in this video. I know the first three are supposed to be range rounds, but I'd opt for private manufacturers like underwood, or doubletap even for range ammo. These are loaded to the same specs as their defensive JHP rounds. Which is perfect for adjusting to the 10mm full powered for EDC. Personally I'd select 180/165 bonded, the 155 SC-HP from doubletap or the 165 bonded from underwood. These have very nice expansion and all around great performance for a carry round. Just my opinion I enjoyed this video and your content keep it up!
I ran a comparison between Magtech 180gr fmj vs Underwood 220gr hardcast, to see if I could feel any difference in recoil. Fired two shots of each, and no noticeable difference, despite 40 grain heavier and having the same speed.

Perhaps the misses could be avoided using a chair and/or a rest. More accuracy that way. After all this shouldn't be a test of the tester's shooting ability; rather it's a test of terminal ballistics. A few more props or shooting aids might streamline things.
To emphasize your point, I suggest comparing Federal 180gr 10mm to Federal 180gr 40S&W, both JHPs, not Hydrashoks. What you will find is the 10mm with same bullet is ~40fps slower than 40S&W. Worse, that Federal 40S&W load is weaker than Winchester, Remington, and Sig loads. However, 10mm from Corbon, Underwood, or even Sig will produce significantly higher velocities than 40S&W with the same projectiles. Also, while gel blocks are very useful for some testing, the velocity and energy cannot be inferred from penetration because bullets can be engineered to expand at different rates and to different degrees.
I use Hornady 155 grain solid copper hollow point 10mm as my carry ammo as a armed security guard.

I would like to see this test but with the real 10mm ammo as in the 600 plus footlbs rounds like the hornady custome 180gr xtp at 1275 fps with 650 footlbs and stuff from underwood like their 180gr gold dot at 1300fps with 675 footlbs and the 155gr xtp at 1500fps with 774 footlbs doubke tap has good powerful rounds aswell and underwood mainly buffalo bore has a few loads but energy wise are not quite as high but other wise great video

@@rohawaha no I dont all my rounds are factory from underwood and hornady if you hand load ive seen people get 155gr at 1600 or more fps which is almost 900 footlbs i have factory 10mm that is 774 foot lbs and from hornady 180gr Xtp at 1275 fps which is 650 footlbs u do not have to hand load to get that energy but some loads that are self defense 10mm are loaded down for low recoil at like 500 footlbs which is the weakest ammo i have and I shoot it as range ammo but my stuff from underwood is 180gr gold dot at 1300 fps which they load even faster at 1350 with the other load but the 1st one at 1300fps is right under 700 footlbs and the other factory underwood load is 155gr xtp at 1500 fps which is 774 footlbs
155gr XTP measures 1250fps out of my G29 with a massive fireball ring.
Agreed that the Hornady custom XTP loads should have been included.
How many of the HP’s became clogged and acted as FMJ’s? Bc from experience, that’s what I’m seeing….
Very astute observation Cori! We did a video earlier on 9mm and the same thing happened there. They do get clogged and fail to open. Some studies indicate that only 50 percent of the time do HP's actually open due to fabric. Thanks for your viewership, it is very important to us and we appreciate your input.
AFAIR The "FBI Standard" was to test against bare ord gel, clothed ord gel, angled car glass a foot from the block, and then 2 spaced 20ga steel sheets in front of the gel. then they had a scoring system to calculate "success" with the lion's share awarded for controlled penetration.
Also IMO, Balistics Gel seems to not give the same results as the Ordinance Gel the FBI used and gives deeper penetration than the real thing.
Just food for thought.

I'm new to 10mm and am discouraged by how expensive and elusive ammunition is, at least in brick and mortar stores.

It is definitely worth hanging in there for awhile. If you do an internet search using some recommended sources I think you might find the availability is there but the cost is up on all calibers so using today's market isn't a very good way to determine how things will be in the future. In loose terms and normal times it will run about 22 to 25 dollars per fifty. Hope this helped and thanks for your viewership.

As someone who got into reloading about a year before covid I can say it's definitely worth it. Especially if you shoot more than just 10mm. I wouldn't quit any platform based on prices or availability today as it fluctuates wildly due to our current federal administration being a clownshow of ineptitude. While I hate bringing politics into this, things will eventually get back to normal once the democrats are ousted.
I've been considering getting a 10mm barrel and spring for my G21 simply because it gives .357 mag level power out of a semi auto pistol. The only reason I haven't made the jump is because I'm already set up for .45 Super which gives similar performance.
@@9unslin9er I second getting a 40 conversion barrel. I did for my G29 and I get a lot more practice time and a lower cost.
I own a lot of pistols, a lot. My woods carry, camping, hiking etc is and will always be the Glock 20. It'll put bears down, and 16 rounds is a lot of rounds. Would I carry it in the city ? Absolutely not. It's just too much power. It would be like carrying a 44 or 357 , in the city I carry believe it or not a Bersa Thunder Plus, 16 rounds of 380 fmj . I am not poor . The Bersa is fast and accurate. Ask any Bersa owner , see what they say. A glock 20 is a wonderful gun , the Glock 29 is for small humans , with small hands. And the recoil from the 29 is punishing. The other cool factor of the Glock 20 is you can shoot with barrel changes like 7-8 different calibers . With one gun. Peace.
If the nose of a bullet is smudged or damaged penetration goes down. Or explosive expansion will reduce penetration.

For my purposes, I want/need maximum muzzle energy and maximum penetration. I carry a 10mm 1911 or a Glock M29.
Great penetration means to me it can break the pelvis, hit the spine, etc. big game hunters in Africa choose penetrating rounds to bring big animals down with good shot placement. But I don’t want a bullet to exit an intruder and go into my neighbor’s house. Any thoughts on 10mm rounds requiring greater maintenance with glocks?
I can tell you only from my own experience of owning multiple glocks chambered in 10mm that they don't live very long. I have never suffered a catastrophic failure but by the 4 to 5 thousand round mark the recoil system is shot. The spring is done and you notice very heavy recoil and the brass flies at least twice as far as it did when new. I also have noticed more reliability issues at that same usage, perhaps related to throat erosion?? But I have never miked it to see. For what they cost I just go get another one. 155 gr xtp on top of 12.5 gr of aa #7 are a good two legged varmint load.
@@AmmoMart all glocks only make it thar far on the guide rod(plastic) and stock spring. Start with a 22lb spring and tungsten guide rod and youll go alot farther. Ive got close to 10000 rounds and still going strong in my gen 3 20.

Been looking for a good handgun for bear defense since I enjoy hiking up in the mountains so much. Glad to see this round seems like it has plenty of penetration out to fifty meters too.
I was looking at the shown velocity and there wasn’t a difference between any of them.
10mm cartridge manufacturers have upped their game as of late. S&B, which is known as one of the makers of the some of the weakest rounds, has increased the velocity of their 10mm. So has Hornday, which had their 155gr XTP going out at 1265, increased its muzzle velocity to over 1400 fps.
Maybe, the ammunition manufacturers have realized their apparent mistake and changed their offerings.
Does an increase in velocity to a given JHP bullet, impart more of an ability to rapidly open and dump its energy quicker? I have noticed there is a correlation between velocity and energy dump. In fact, sometimes, the faster bullet doesn't penetrate as far, which is a direct indication the hollow point has violently opened, and thereby transferred the remaining kinetic energy into the media it traveled through.
My question is, is someone willing to test my theory with something like Hornady's 10mm, 155gr XTP at both of their manufactured velocities? A cartridge's velocity potential isn't obtained in a shorter barrel, so a barrel of 4.5 or greater should be used.
*I am not a carry person. If I do, its with an old S&W 1006. I have a Glock 40 with a 6" barrel, but I haven't tried a way to efficiently carry it. I intend to purchase a Glock 20 with its 4.6" barrel to be my future personal carry weapon.

Well, in fact it makes sense… the more energy is transfer back to the recoil and into the hand, the less energy is put on the bullet and the less energy is transfer to the recoil the more energy is transfer to the bullet.
I think no one has done this… try to fix the gun as static as posible not allowing it to bounce back… just the natural recoil of the gun but not allowing the entire gun to move by any fraction. Just fix it as much as posible and then shoot it then measure the speed, penetration, kinetic energy etc. The difference in speed, etc then is the factor of poor hand grip by each individual.
The ppu 180gr jhp at least the newer defense line should only be used as range or cheap hunting ammo from ky experence it does not open up near as much as even a 9mm jhp but it is real slow for a 180gr 10mm but still the bullt desigen is one I'd never use for self defense because it acts like a fmj
PPU is a water down 10mm. Underwood Ammo & Buffalo Bore is what I recommend.

@@duroisgawd the last time I checked a 40 will drop a person just as easy as a 10mm. I get tired of people rambling this bullshit over and over again. 10mm is versatile because you can get rounds for people running around 40, and with just a change of ammo, drop a bear. Not to mention same velocity, still hitting with like 150 more lbf
I am here looking for 10mm loaded ammo info. I agree with others.. this is merely 40sw loaded 10mm. I expect more than 1200fps.

True 10mm rounds like underwood, Double Tap, Sig Sauer, HPR and Buffalo Bore. You will get about 1,230 FPS with 180 grain rounds, and 1,600 FPS with 135 grain. Any of this S&B, Remington, federal etc etc are all 10mm lite over the counter rounds not much different than .40.

I feel like everyone can always learn what's what and have the accessibility to the maybe even too hot rounds, for cold climate defense, hunting etc etc. I would never want to suggest any reason these manufacturers these days do anything more to lighten or cheapen so to speak, the rounds we pay our extremely(generally speaking) hard earned dollars to buy, especially with the going rates these days.
Recall your target subject in real life normally will be wearing clothing on both sides. I've yet to see anyone do gel tests with simulated clothing on both sides. I'd like to see a test with clothing on both sides of the gel, a space of 24", then another clothed block

My understanding is that clear synthetic gel has a thinner consistency and/or greater plasticity/deformability than brown organic gel. This means that clear gel allows greater penetration than brown gel does. We should reduce the clear gel penetration depths by some sort of correction factor. I've read -20-25% cited most often.
So 21 inches in clear would translate to about 16 to 17 inches. And that's very good.
50 meters and 6x6 is a real challenge

More like a 40 SW test, I consider a 180 10mm should be pushing 1300 fps minimum, no the 10 mm is not the big bad wolf it is a handgun cartridge no where near the 41 SW magnum.

real 10mm are hard to find = 200 grain at 1250 fps 180 grain at 1350 fps and 155 grain at 1500 fps out of a 5 inch barrell

Sorry but in my opinion the 10mm has too much penetration against humans. It has a total overpenetration even with HP´s!
So it is not necessary to use it for defense. Too much recoil and background threat. And at least 20% of it´s energy gets lost behind the hit body.
I'll stick with my .357 mag for hunting . When I see guys that are excellent marks man miss that many times . Tells me that ammo or the auto isn't being consistent. My GP 100 doesn't do that . Can't risk wounding or missing

use 185 gr 45 acp plus P ammo instead. too many under powered loads of 10 mm so you buy the 10 mm gun then the ammo cost more then 45 acp i dont see the benefit of owning a 10 mm
Buy underwood ammo and buy a double stack pistol. Decent reason why outdoors people are carrying 10mm for animal defense. I see less reason to carry a 45. I own several and they are my least carried caliber.
@@FoulPet there are double stack 45 acp pistols FN GLOCK and HK makes them. i have watch a number of videos stating that most 10 mm are watered down because of that reason and the extra cost of 10 mm ammo a person might come out buying 45 acp + p ammo. i know that people carry 10 mm for animal defense and mainly hard cast ammo
@@track-sv2us yep and the grips are the size of 2x4s. I've owned a Para and a Glock in 45. Notice I said owned. 10mm is still big and heavy but if I'm going to carry a gun made for Hulk Hogan, it going to have more power and more rounds. 40SW beats most 45+P rounds in FP of energy. Look up underwood ammo and check out the stats. If cost worries you, You should be shooting 9mm to begin with.
PMC ammo is junk get some Underwood or Buffalo Bore to really see what the 10mm is about.
I shoot 10 & 40. For my bux the 40 is a much better value & just as effective for defense.

Do your home work the 10 mm is just a S&W 40 plus P. they aren't even close to a 357 mag.
It all depends on the round.....and the gun. There are 150gr underwood 10mm rounds that travel 1500+ fps. That is certainly comparable to some 357 mag offerings. But when we talk just standard rounds, 357 will absolutely beat 10mm. You always gotta get the right rounds for the right job.

If you are going to shoot 10mm, use Underwood, DT or Buffalo Bore. Also, I believe the 165gr to be the best weight for self defense. The velocity of a 180gr. would be 1,300fps. If you friend is an 10mm expert would know these things. The velocities that you are showing is the top end of a 40S&W.
Not much difference in pistol rounds from .380 to 10mm-you may get better penetration with certain loads or certain calibers or slightly more expansion but for the most part the wound tracks appear to be very similar with all pistol rounds in all calibers. I would say shot placement is key and stopping power is a myth! You stop someone with a well placed shot it has nothing to do with caliber or muzzle velocity and everything to do with reaching vital organs or enough power to make a break in the attack but the 2A is why we have the freedom to protect and defend ourselves as we see fit and we stand United fighting for that freedom to do so and pick our tools for the job, GOD BLESS AMERICA~
A 380 will get you killed! The entire reason the US Army went away from the 38 S&W was it had no stopping power! They went to the 45 and problem solved! The 10mm I agree has some over penetration issues but it will put you down in a heart beat!
What's next, going to shoot 5 brands of .38 ammo through a .357 handgun to tell us how effective a .357 is? Pretty lame. Try using some 10mm ammo next time, not this watered down lawyer-.40 ammo.
Saying this is true 10mm performance while noticing the velocities are 1000fps with 170 and 180gr loads is ridiculous! Underwood , Buffalo Bore and Double Tap are the only true 10mm loadings Im aware of and I have carried and shot a 10mm since 1987. Try the 155JHP XTP load or the 135gr JHP from Underwood . Then I'll listen. btw...the 10mm round was designed with a 5" bbl in mind.
Then I did the right thing by dropping in an Alpha Wolf 6" fluted barrel in my Glock 20, right?
