I'm a classically trained singer and I must strongly disagree. This is the most vocally impressive interpretation of this song that I've ever heard. It's not even close. Pentatonix is a group of extremely talented singers but, even if you prefer their version as a whole, there's no individual singer in their group who can sing this song better than David Draiman.
You are correct. Especially with the fact that he had the flu and a 102 degree temp when he did this. Also he was sitting down and normally stands. You need to watch the video version. A lot more range and emotion in it.
Real talk dude. No one has given me goose bumps like this dude.
Oh yeah.. I agree 100%. This guy is unreal ❤❤❤❤
Also the pentatonix version was way to "light/happy". What makes this version so amazing is that it matches the lyrics in darkness.
You are so right! Nobody sings this better than David Draiman.....vocal talent and control is absolutely unbelievable.....Pentatonix can't touch him....sorry..... any one of their singers can't touch him!!
I’ve heard it described before as “Simon & Garfunkel’s version is a warning, whereas Disturbed’s version is an outcry, for not heeding the warning.”
And Pentatonix version is "hope afterwards"
@@MidoriDad yes yes yes! S&G is sorrowful, Disturbed is anger and PTX is hope
Their video version of this is visually epic in B&W
Gothic Belle “Take my arms, that I might reach you.”
Brilliant description. The lyrics are something that gives me hope even with this pandemic.
While I love PTX, this is by far THE best version. I can feel the angst and anger that we didn’t heed the Simon and Garfunkel version (the original).
You don't have to compare, because Simon & Garfunkel already said that this was the version they endorse as the best version of their song, including their own, and he actually had a cold when this performance took place!!!
And was auto-tuned (in this version), against his own will, or at least I read that somewhere.
@@SteffeL2 That's right, I forgot about that. I heard that too, but I guess I forgot it because I never knew if it was true or not. I can't tell.
@@SteffeL2 It was for a couple of the high notes from my understanding and he wasn't happy about that. I like the official video version better but it's mostly because of the visuals. He can and does perform this song live as the Conan performance showed.
I have not heard of any source that confirmed that. Just rumors. On the contrary i watched a vocal coach watching this same performance and commenting on it. She said that it she understood that some persons though so, because of some sounds in some parts, but in her opinion those where a natural part of his voice.
@@estranhokonsta I think I saw the same reaction, then she got abused by a bunch of hacks for saying that .
If anyone says that isn’t “as vocally impressive”, they don’t know a thing about music. His display of control, emotion and depth was on full display here. Most people don’t realize David Draiman is a versatile singer, not just a metal screamer.
i have to agree. His range is unbelievable, from baritone to tenor. The control was stellar. I never get tired of watching this video and am truely impressed by his vocals in this song.
@@lynsmith2698 Those low notes just resonate and give me goosebumps on top of goosebumps. I can't name any other modern singer with his vocal range that can execute that kind of tone that low.
During this Dave Draiman had the flu and a temp over 100. His own words "I was sick as a dog" this was an interview when he found out they'd been nominated for a grammy for the performance.
@@masterv2041 so the man was sick as a dog and still performed like that? Dear god thank you for your gift to the people that is dave draiman
Spot on!!
For me, the original has always seemed like a sad warning, disturbed's version as the anger that the warning was ignored, and pentatonix's as hopeful that the warning will bring about change. I love how all 3 versions of the same song can bring about such different emotions.
Well said, I love all three versions in their own way.
When David dropped into his "Disturbed" voice that we're used to, goosebumps everywhere for me. So haunting and poignant. I hadn't heard this versions before... Phenomenal
His use of different vocal techniques throughout this version is impressive. I love this version.
Thank God someone else here noticed that. David has incredible skill and depth in that voice.
The most impressive use of vocal techniques in a single song I've ever seen!!!
100% my favorite cover of Sound of Silence!
Same here.
Same!!!
Ties with Pentatonix’s version for me. #Pentaholic.
The one by Henk Poort, i find the best.
I found the Pentatonix version to be proof that bubble gum survived the final war.
IMO this and Johnny Cash’s cover of NIN’s “Hurt” are the two greatest cover songs of all time.
Couldn't agree more. Johnny Cash's Hurt is truly in a whole other realm than NIN's.
@@MusicallySpontaneous there are some other good covers and originals ... i have a lot of suggestiins for him *evil grin*
I think you'd have to put Jimi Hendrix All Along the Watchtower up there as well.
YES!!! And I am NOT a metal head
limp bizkits cover of the whos behind blue eyes would go at the top with this song... and jimi hendrix cover of the beatles all along the watchtower
This has got to be one on the most powerful live performances I have ever seen! It just totally blows me away every time I listen to it.
I am a classically trained singer and THIS IS EPIC! Amazing, stirring rendition and the singing is strong and full of passion. Love it!
I've heard several versions of the song. Love the message. In this version you don't just hear it. You feel S&G's message on all levels in this rendition. Paul Simon actually shared this version on his social media and David Draiman got a chance to speak to him shortly after. We the original artist and songwriter praises your version of their song and is excited to share it - you did good.
Keep in my he was sick during this performance. It's my favorite cover of this song. Love distirbed
I love this version the best. It reaches deep inside me and touches my emotions. This video version resonates on me. When I watch their MV version, that one touches me emotionally. I like both versions!
EVERYTIME I HEAR THIS VERSION I END UP TEARING UP AND JUST GETTING CHILLS!
This is the BEST RENDITION OF THIS SONG EVER!!!! So hard to believe it was live - David Draiman is EXTRAORDINARILY TALENTED! This rendition of this song spoke to my soul, gave me chills and made my heart pound. The next best rendition of this song is Disturbed's recorded version, also extremely powerful. Thank you David and Disturbed for gifting this to the world.
i am an old school simon and garfunkle fan and never heard Disturbed before. i am awestruck by the vocals i just heard. that was simply amazing.
I'm a huge PTX fan, but I also love Disturbed. I would never try to compare these two versions and say one is better than the other. They are both phenomenal in their own right.
I like you
I prefer this version over PTX's as it just felt like it carried more weight to it. Still I have no complaints about PTX's version other than it felt rushed, and like a middle of the pact cover of the song. However even though I said that, I still enjoy listening to it.
If the song were a story, I would say that the original was the warning of things to come. PTX's felt like its happening and its pace had an urgency to it making it feel like the middle of the story. As for Disturb's cover, it just has this heaviness to it. Feels like the ending to the story as a final cry for not listening to what was being said.
@@Doublebarreledsimian I agree. I love the harmonies and "feel" of the PTX version, but Disturbed captured the darkness of the lyrics better than any version I've heard (including Simon & Garfunkel's original), so I have to give it the edge as my favorite version.
Mary Brown: I like you too!
Try Puddles Pity Party version.
I’m a huge metal fan but PTX has always been amazing to me. I appreciate this version so much and love Disturbed. He even did this while he was sick and had issues with his range due to acid affecting his vocal chords. That makes this performance even more impressive. Glad you reacted to it and were respectful not to compare. One of the many reasons I follow you.
Great reaction! I would go check out their music video for this.. it’s hauntingly beautiful ❤️ I’ve been to their concerts years ago, wish they covered it then!
I don't know how to listen to this song, no matter who sings it without absolutely crying my eyes out every time. I just feel that this song is as relevant now as it was 50/60 years ago.
He had to use a different version of the vocals for this performance, he had a cold....
He had... a COLD.....
This is what happens when you get a classically trained and quite versatile singer, a cold.
He was sick during the performance...you’d never know
Reacting to more Disturbed? I would suggest "The Light" from the same album.
Hands down... the ABSOLUTE BEST VERSION EVER!!!!
This is my favorite Disturbed song. I love how it’s so different from their other music. It starts out so simple and soft and ends so powerful. I absolutely love this song thank you for reacting to it,
I had listened to Simon and Garfunkel so this song for as long as I can remember being alive. I genuinely believed I would never hear a version from anyone else I would like because how can you top perfection. This I heard this version. For the first time ever I actually understood the lyrics and felt the emotion behind the song. I think I listened to this over and over again for about a week. And the only reason I had listened to this version in the first place was because I think it was Garfunkel who shared it and endorsed it.
Now I adore PTX. ADORE THEM. And their version is spectacular. But there is something about this version from Disturbed that breaks my heart every time and therefore puts it right at the top of my favourites list.
Should also mention this gentleman was actually sick with a cold when he recorded this so yeah.......
As amazing as this performance is, the video is even better. The graphics add to the power of the song, and his voice goes from a somewhat softer beginning building to what I believe is even more intense ending.
I get what you're saying and I can't disagree. However, when I recommend this to anyone--especially reactors--I always suggest the live version first. There are flaws in this performance but it's obviously live, not lip-synched, no studio-produced perfection, and I think it's phenomenal (despite the unwanted autotuning in a couple of spots). I watched this version until I knew every nuance by heart. THEN I watched the official video, which is stunning. It is certainly a better sound recording and, as you say, "the graphics add to the power of the song." The Conan performance, however, is the one I keep coming back to. Nothing quite like a live performance. And I love the tympani!
He was apparently sick when he did this live performance. Many have said so, and I feel like he had some trouble with his vocal chords and diaphragm support in this.
Very Powerful and Moving song. The only other one like it would be Bad Wolves 'Zombie'. Nice Reaction
Pentatonix is inferior that this one, disturbed produced a masterpiece.
I agree wholeheartedly. Pentatonix are very very talented but that was not one of my favorite covers they had done. This is just immaculate in every way.
Yep
Hey Jase your really need to do Bad Wolves Zombie cover
This version made me love this song. :)
Same here. I thought it was an decent song with a good message, but this made me fall in love with it. You really feel everything the lyrics are saying.
David Draiman's voice is AWESOME!!! No one can compare!!
I use goosebumps /chills as my guide and this version still causes them! The Pentatonix version never did though I do love their version as well. This version matches the dark lyrics much better than the original as well as the pentatonix version. All 3 are great but in a world where I could only listen to one, it's this cover on Conan (prefer it over their offical video as well)
I never listened to Disturbed, i mean my kids listen to them, & im not a fan of their music but when i heard this,!? This 63 year old woman has become a fan of Disturbed, still dont care for the kids taste in music but every once in a while you'll find a gem in there somewhere😊❤️
Wow!!!! He has a GREAT voice!!!!! I REALLY like this version!!! Great range!!! His inflection is AMAZING!!! Agreed...”out of the park”!!!! PREACH!!! I don’t know this group but THIS was completely AWESOME!
Like you, I love both performances. I love his gravel-voice emotion. I do miss the intricate harmonies you get with PTX, but I also love the instrumental accompaniment (especially the strings).
This version gave me the chills throughout! Like you said, SO HAUNTING! and the string/orchestra with it just added SO much depth and nuance!!
This version was the best it only took one of him to capture my soul.
Another great cover is Stairway to Heaven by Heart. It’s mind blowing 🤯
GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZUS!!!! I LOVED this live version.... AMAZING!!! It's a completely different feel from PTX's version, and beautifully done. Thanks for sharing my man!!
This is my favourite version of “The Sound of Silence” by far! Absolutely brilliant.
If you haven’t yet, you really need to listen to “Blue On Black” as covered by 5 Finger Death Punch, specifically the one featuring Kenny Wayne Sheppard & Brian Mays.
Power is the only way to make people listen. He has so much power and uses it VERY well. This is my favorite version of this song. Anger sorrow and reason portrayed so everyone will listen. Rock on!
This song , when he sings goes thru your soul.
Best cover ever! He really interprets the lyrics. They are way more actual today! 😫😭😭
David Draiman has one of if not the most beautiful and powerful voices in rock. Disturbed is one of my fave rock bands. Always has and personally underrated. Comparing him to my beloved Ptx is apples and oranges. Both are beyond compare and incredible. Awesome reaction and choice again @Jase
I was waiting for the song to start sounding like disturbed and they didn't disappoint. Happened after you paused it. Very good rendition from them. Agree Pentatonix is a totally different category then really anyone else. Great choice!! P.S. thank you for this channel and providing a range of great music choices!!
Thank you for rocking with me, you're an OG around here! 🤘
I'm not the biggest fan of Disturbed's music, but this cover is genius. I hope David does songs in the future that show off his vocal range and versatility as this song did.
Goosebumps!!!
That rasp in his voice is incredible!
I am so late listening to this but wow!
The orchestral version is by far EPIC on every freakin’ level!
Disturbs version is much better than Penatonix
As much as I love the pentatonix cover this is probably still my favorite cover of the song 😂
Why compare when we can just appreciate that there's multiple fantastic versions in the world
David Draiman has the most beautiful voice of any man I've ever heard.
Love your videos bud. If you don’t mind if you would react to Run to You by Pentatonix if you haven’t.
My background with music is so eclectic, you wouldn't believe!!! While yes I am a pentaholic, his version was so different from any other... I loved this version more because musically he shows so much control over his own voice. I'm also a music nerd. So there is that.
I'm not a heavy metal fan at all, but I LOVE this perfprmance.
Don't get me wrong--I love the original. I absolutely LOVE the way Simon & Garfunkel transcend generations with this classic. But Disturbed's version makes me pay closer attention to the lyrics!!
Love that you said not to compare the two because they absolutely are two completely different renditions. I like all 3 (Disturbed, PTX, and Simon & Garfunkel) for what they are. Each one brings its own flavor to the table. Love your reactions! Please please please react to "Immortalized", "The Brave and the Bold" or "The Vengeful One" from the Immortalized album. Really anything from that album is awesome.
I actually prefer Disturbed version a million times more than Pentatonix, and this is coming from a huge Pentatonix fan. But this is truly fucking amazing!
Sorry, while the PTX version was technically well performed, it was ALL WRONG. They are extremely talented, I agree BUT.....they produced a poppy, fluffy, flowery version of a song that has a message that sorely needs to be passed along to people at this time. PTX version could never make anyone cry, that is because it has no soul in it to touch anyone....I am so disappointed with them for doing what they did with this song because it was a waste of their talent. When I heard how masterfully they performed Hallelujah and then heard what they did to Sounds of Silence I could not believe it, or forgive it. Total disaster.
I'm sorry, any artist who could perform this song, in the world we live in today, as a flowery pop tune is either out of touch or they didn't bother to learn what the meaning behind the work they performed. Either reason is unacceptable. Period. The only excuse would be if they intended to cover it as S&G performed it, and even the S&G version was darker than what PTX spewed out.
The fact that the Paul Simon has posted a link to only one cover version of this song on his Facebook page and it was Disturbed's version says everything that needs to be said I guess. I doubt you'll ever see a link from him to PTX's flowery mess. Such a waste of potential from PTX. Whomever decided they should do what they did should be shit-canned and replaced.
I'm not a metal fan, and it is rare that a PTX cover is not my favorite, but the music video of Disturb's cover is hands down my favorite. The visuals in it add even more power.
My understanding in this live version is that even though he was sick, he refused to use a track for support. Pretty impressive!
Disturbed all day, every day. There's no question.
As I said in the Pentatonix video, this version blew me away, then Pentatonix blew me away again. Both are great, but are also different from each other and the original. This is my favorite but others will have their own opinion.
This is what turned me on to Disturbed. Yes, I must’ve lived under a rock.
I love this song and have all 3 versions (S&G, Disturbed, and PTX) on my phone. Which one I play depends on what I'm feeling at the time. That's the joy of music - there is no right or wrong. Just because you love one version of a song doesn't mean that you can't love another just as much.
I think you need to watch the official film clip version of this, it is so much clearer and more powerful.
You should also do Disturbed’s Official video for Sound of Silence
I won't say Pentatonix's version is better because it's NOT!
I've only ever seen the music video of this version before but the live version is just as.epic and hair on end as the video version
Anyone who says that the PTX version was better, hasn't seen this version.
Such an amazing voice. So powerful. You are hanging on his every word.
David was so sick that night that the band was afraid he wouldn't be able to stand long enough to sing the entire song and that is why he was sitting down.
Pentatonix was pure cringe. This is awesome.
Plaese do Disturbed - A Reason to Fight
I wish I could grow a beard like yours, or just a beard period😂
Thank you for not comparing! Both are incredible.
I'll be honest I wasnt impressed with the MV version of this and PTX did it better. However after watching this live rendition, his is actually better.
yea...none of the comments are going to say that :)
Great reaction man!
You should listen to Henk Poort's version of this
I was excited to see this today. I love your reactions, and appreciate your passion and acceptance of all types music if it's quality stuff.
I was surprised you hadn't heard this until now, and I was thinking "don't pause it right before his 'change' " because it'll lose something. But it was okay! Love this song in all it's forms, but this one is the only one that makes me cry. Love you, Jas! You are my new 'go-to' when I need a break from 'whatever'.
I’ve absolutely loved this version since the first time I heard it (it was quite awhile ago, but not the live version) - so glad you reacted to it! 🤘
I’ve been listening to this version since it’s release and it still gives me chills every single time.
Watch the Studio Video.
Honestly didn’t think I would but I got CHILLS. so good.
It's the context of the song that I feel lends itself to be great for all that sing it. Great video as usual for you sir. Enjoy watching you "work". So happy for you to be able to do what you like. 👍🏻🤘
🤘🤘
But dude, your face!
You should check out sound of Starbucks by Tim Hawkins it’s hilarious
His Chick fil A skit is hilarious as well.
Try Disturbed "Hold on to Memories"!! great song
I loved it! The video was super awesome. Probably the music video had the extra touch! I still love their rendition of this song!! 💕💕💕
Pentatonix's version is great but this is a serious protest song!!! His voice is EPIC!!! This song is EPIC!!! It has a message that needs to be heard by EVERYONE!!!
Pentatonix was better? Nope... not possible.
There's nothing better than the Disturbed version of this song.
We're automatically going to compare them. Of course we are. Just because this version is that good, we're comparing...
This is why the original video has over 600+ million...yes... MILLION views. PTX is nothing but a glorified barbershop quartet.. oh sorry quintet. It took 5 voices to do what David Draiman did. Literally NO comparison! PLUS,.. it was live and he had the flu! Yeah.. he's that good! OH,,, PS... after this performance, the original writer/singer Paul Simon contacted them and said this was the ONLY cover he approved of. How's that for a pat on the back!
Another great version of this was performed on a Dutch show called "Beste Zangers" (Best Singers). "Sound of Silence" was performed by Dutch musical theater and opera star Henk Poort. He sang the Disturbed version for the Nightwish lead vocalist Floor Jansen. Later in the series Henk and Flor performed "Phantom of the Opera". Henk was the original Phantom in Holland, Andrew Loyd Webber considers Henk one of the best Phantoms ever. These two performances are both wonderful.

Technically, Disturbed's performance of SOS is masterful...but it's not for my taste. I've enjoyed SOS since 1964 and heard many cover versions. The original is mysterious and haunting. This version borders on angry. I've heard it several times, but just don't like it.
Well...I loved Pentatonix's but this?? Even Paul Simon loves it. Truth? I'd never heard of Disturbed before I first saw this -- possibly b/c I'm really old -- but this version of this song transcends all else.
I love that pause before the audience explodes...you can tell they were entranced, too.
Off to listen to this for the zillionth time... (Oh, thank you SO much for not stopping the video every few seconds.)
Yep...when you get Paul Simon telling you that you did a better job on his song than he did, I'm sure David was....mind officially blown!!!
