"But nOOou!"
Which is actually a false dichotomy. The actual hubris Odysseus had was telling his literal name and adress to a foe who was still cognizant and who he knows actvively had allies in the area. The Cyclops was neutralized until he had to satisfy his wounded ego by pronouncing his identity, that was the reckless part of his actiojs in truth.

The song Remember them is about Odysseus and his crew remembering their fallen friends and carrying them with them (Metaphorically) The ending of the song is the start of Odyssesus adopting Polite's open arms philosophy, which is why he spares the cyclops and also he is aggressively trying to impart the lesson onto the Cyclops "we tried to lead with peace but you chose to be a monster. So remember who you killed, the consequences of it, and remember me the next time you choose not to spare someone" it doesn't work out for Odysseus, but i think in Epic specifically it's not meant to be a thing of hubris

In this case it's the fact that he isn't taking the emotional aspect of the other cyclops who obviously care about polyphemus enough to ask what hurt him and more indirectly the potential wrath of Poseidon who all cyclops are sons of. You can note he is trying to act in a way similar to open arms but he is still in many ways keeping to his usual hubris when he does so. The issue isn't actually that he is being emotional but that he isn't being emotionally cognizant of everyone involved, which slots into the characters usual flaw. The lack of thought there is reckless, which is actually what makes the dichotomy of mercy or ruthlessness shown to him flawed.

That way, it would appear that not only is Poseidon telling him to jump into the water, but also a manifestation of Odysseus’ guilt of letting the men die to the cyclops and the other enemies they encountered, taken form with the use of Poseidon’s powers.

I mean to be fair to the books, they do say Poseidon mellowed out a lot more over the years. Still temperamental and destructive and vengeful of course, but the gods do adopt attributes of modern-day America (more specifically, wherever the Heart of the West is) so some would mellow out or become more uptight as a result haha

Well I personally love ruthlessness a little more this song also is fantastic. Ruthlessness gets across the pure rage of Poseidon how much he is a force of nature. This one strikes a different type of fear, the idea that Poseidon is such a powerful being above you that he can so casually tell you to drown yourself because he is so powerful that are you to refuse him
I didn’t know there was an actual clip for this one! I do the same head tilt thing when I sing along for the second ‘get in the water’, the little ‘come on’ tone was so clear just in the audio it’s all I could imagine when listening. I love varied tone in songs like that.

I just always found it so crazy that Poseidon is so “Fuck you Odysseus! How dare you NOT kill my son.” Like??? You would think he’d be happy that his son didn’t die 💀😭
It's an honor thing from back then. Dying in battle was seen as something good, but being spared meant that the opponent didn't see you as worthy of a glorious end. Not to mention, everything that happened with Polyphemus was after Odysseus (in the musical at least) killed an infant. So in Poseidon's eyes, the fact that this man was willing to murder someone "weak and helpless" but then went on to spare the thing that actually killed his soldiers, was disgusting as well as disrespectful. There's also the fact that Poseidon was on Troy's side of the war. And he's also the god of horses. So the enemy not only laying waste to the city he preferred, but doing it using an imitation of his personal animal? It was even more insulting to him. Also... him being the god of the sea meant that usually you'd have to pray to him, show him respect and reverence the gods deserve, before sailing anywhere, so that he may grant you a safe journey. But Odysseus and the crew didn't do that when they left Troy. That last point is why, in Ruthlessness, Poseidon mentions "I've been so gracious" seemingly out of nowhere. But it makes sense. He was willing to let some of the disrespect slide and let the fleet return home, but it wasn't until they dishonored his son, and by extension him, by showing mercy to Polyphemus after crippling him, that he knew he had to teach them a lesson. Granted. It all still could have been avoided had Odysseus not let his hubris and emotions result in doxxing himself to Polyphemus as they were leaving.
Now, having the thunder saga, I love that Poseidon is singing his waiting plan in the tune of Different Beast. Odysseus thought he became a monster, but Poseidon truly is a Different Beast than even that.

Technically, Odysseus never really apologized. He was trying to pacify poseidon by explaining his reasoning, but he never really said he was sorry.
@@user-zr6er2xs3w the line "the line between naivete and hopefulness is almost invisible" makes it sound, to me, that he took it as an apology. But he had no intention of letting them live, he just wanted to see them grovel
