The Trews are a Canadian rock band from my hometown of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. The song was written after one of the band members former classmates passed away in Afghanistan. She was also the first Canadian woman soldier to pass away in that conflict. Capt. Nichola Goddard was her name and her picture is the first thing you see when you walk into the lobby of my old highschool back home

I'm American veteran, but I live just south of the US/Canadian border in NY state. The Highway of Hero's is not too far away. I remember when this came out, and the connection with my northern brothers and sisters is very real. The Trews are a Canadian treasure and one of my favorite bands. As for your words failing you, no worries brother. If they didn't fail you, that is if the song didn't touch you , I wouldn't have subscribed to this channel.

Whenever a soldier is escorted down the Highway of Hereos, there are always hundreds if not thousands of people lining the highway, the sides and the overpasses. 🇨🇦 It is not the greatest reason to gather, but it is definitely patriotic, humbling, and amazing to see.
The Highway Of Heroes is named for the route that all fallen Canadian soldiers take from Trenton Air Force base to the morgue in Toronto, it's 171 kilometers or about 104 miles. The highway has always been called the "Queen Elizabeth Way' or the 401. All major highways in Ontario have a 4xx designation. This 171 kilometer stretch has been renamed the Highway Of Heroes in honour of these fallen heroes. RIP.

I am a proud Canadian Citizen, who's been here for 51 years. Having arrived on Canada's gracious doorstep, much like all other immigrants from the harrowing SE Asian country of Myanmar. I am truly grateful for everything Canada has provided me. Though I've never had the privilege of serving in the military, I have always had great admiration and empathy for all of our brave souls. I was taught this respect by my parents (RIP) right from Day 1 of my life and it shall follow me throughout my entire journey. I have family and friends in all corners of this globe, however, I never feel any better than when I cross her borders to return home. (and to a Tim Horton's Coffee!) The Highway of Heroes is actually the main highway in the Southern Ontario region, which makes up part of the Trans Canada Highway. It is numbered as Highway 401 and in Ontario, it is also known as the King's Highway. They named the highway after the county, which was named in honour of King Charles II of England on November 1, 1683. It stretches 828 kilometres (514 mi) from City of Windsor in the west to the Ontario-Quebec border in the east. Though the entire population of Canada is approximately only 37.59 million, the soul of the Canadian is strong and silent, yet, immeasurably brave. It had to be, to carve out a living from the unforgiving wilderness. Apart from its incredible Indigenous Peoples, everyone came from somewhere else. As such, I am sure they had first hand knowledge of poor governance from whence they came. Most importantly, they came to exercise their concept of true freedom, with a slightly different take on it than our neighbours to the south. None the less, Freedom is what is cherished here, as we are a proud member of the Commonwealth. Canadians have shared their blood in all parts of the world where tyranny reared its ugly head. Though I cannot speak for everyone, I will state that I am, indeed, proud to be a Canadian. I proudly fly a Canadian flag out on my front yard and eat Poutine! Our flora and fauna are second to none, accompanied by an incredible topography. I often say the if God doesn't live here, he must surly vacation here! It brings tears to my heart, every time I see and hear of the respect paid for our fallen ones. I have stood on some bridges during some intense weather conditions, knowing that it was nothing compared to what that brave soldier had given - yes, given for my freedom. Tears of appreciation flow freely for all those braves who go into battle, just because we asked. The ones who don't appreciate, are not bad - they just haven't had anyone sit down and explain it to them, as my parents did.
Loved your smile when the bagpipes came on. Bagpipes are really popular here (at least where i'm from in Canada). Every festival has bagpipes. Probably because a lot of people came to Canada from Scotland. In the town I'm from we have a Scottish festival every year too. There's even a few gaelic speaking communities in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
I am from Ontario, but my dad is from Cape Breton and I love the Maritimes!! He always loved the bagpipes and I do as well due to his influence when I was young. My mom's dad served in WW1 for Germany and he relayed an interesting story and he hated the bagpipes since he would hear them playing and it signaled that a fierce battle was about to begin and the association of the bagpipes and a battle always stayed with him. I have witnessed the Highway of Heroes first hand driving behind the convoy and it was such a remarkable patriotic thing to see first hand.

As I understand it in The States the bodies are flown to the nearest base to their home. In canada however an autopsy must be done so all KIA soldiers arive in Trenton Ontario and are transported to Toronto down the 401 so that section has been named the Highway of Heros. People and firedepts gather on the overpasses to show their respect when evry body comes home.

I really appreciate this video more then you could ever imagine, a man who I called my big brother, Jay Forbes, was the one who started the petition for the government to recognize the highway of heroes, the same highway my cousin travelled down when he was KIA from an IED in 2008. He was amazingly supportive of the Canadian Forces, he was an officer in the Canadian Navy but he sadly ended up taking his life in April of 2015. I've went on to serve in the Canadian Army for 5 years now. Appreciate your words man.

Touching and beautiful, I cry every single time I hear this song. The Highway of Heros is just a dozen kilometres from my home. So sad and proud that our fighting men gave their lives to save people so far away. Canadian soldiers have done so since WW 1. We captured Vimy Ridge and the Somme in that war, and it made us a nation. My Mom is from Glasgow, Dad from Southport in England. Been to Glasgow once, met some long lost family. Bob Ried song the first Highway of Heroes. it is on You Tube! I stood there as Canadian fall travelled the Highway of Hero as did a lot of my fellow Canadians. Bob Ried paid his respecr to the families and to the Citizens show their support for the Families of the Fallen Troops. Yes the Trews, did a diferent song but they pushed it hard and Bob's song got lost and almost forgotten! I thank Canadian Troop when I see them, My family served, 4 Uncles, two Aunts, my Father and Brother!
It is a dedicated stretch of highway that has 12 bridges that the heroes go under. I served as a Paramedic on quite a few of those days. People were there to support the family as well as pay their respects to the fallen soldier(s). This was written because the lead singer knew and was friends with a female helicopter pilot who travelled this Highway Of Heroes on her way back home for a full military funeral. Sadly I have seen the Highway of Heroes first hand and it is an amazing tribute as we wait as the fallen passes by and it is 170 kms of people of all ages showing their respect on every overpass as the motorcade goes by. It is truly something to behold. My dad served in Korea and I always pay my respects on Remembrance Day at the cenotaph or at the Veterans section of the cemetery he is buried in. A few years back, one day I was at the cemetery just prior to Remembrance day, there was a father who had his children placing painted black stones with a poppy painted on each stone and placed on each headstone. All the stones are still there and it was very touching.
Another song that speaks of our warriors, for Remembrance Day is one done by Terry Kelly called "A Pittance of Time". I weep when I listen to either of these songs. For a fun note, the Canadian Military does not put two Highland Regiments together, they did before a major Parade, it didn't go well, seems a fight broke out...oops. But then again, neither does the U.K.. Thank you for this lovely video.
The highway is still called the 401 but, the area from the Trenton Airforce Base to the Coroner’s office in Toronto is the 100 miles of the highway has also been named the Highway of Heroes.
These lads are from my home town. And they were classmates of Capt Nicola Goddard ( RMC and Capt of infantry ) who was KIA in the Ghan. PAX! I also want to remember Trooper Karin Blaise from Gaspe who was killed by a IUD with the Van Doos or perhaps PPCLI. Loved and remembered! BTW I was in the US Army from 65 to 68.

American mom here... Son unable to serve but helps me put up the flag and drives me to the Military Cemetery 3 times a year where my father is. I first heard this song due to a short run TV show, that the military haters got off the air quick as spit. But the song played after loosing a Battle Nurse in a MASH type show I immediately began looking for and found this and have been thankful ever since. All Vets, walking home to experience PTSD later when home, the walking wounded that come home to rehab and bills that sometimes breaks families to the All gave some, some gave All motto..... This is the least they deserve and thankfully Canada can provide it. America is to petty and divided to show quiet respect. We have our Motorcycle guard to get between the hate spitting "CHURCH" one I wouldn't piss on if it was on fire..their opinion , mine... But Carry me softly is every soilders right in respect for giving rights to the other side.. Would love to see the band at Buckingham to play it sometime for the Queen.. These guys do Canada Proud... I was living in Ottawa that day. The city basically shut down because of a misguided foreign youth who shot Nathan in the back while he was standing duty on The Canadian War Monument. He made his way to the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings where he was gunned down after making his way inside. It was a horrible day and unforgettable for all of the wrong reasons.

Any time I hear the bagpipes come in, no matter how sad and worn out I feel, my heart perks up and I'm able to keep marching.

it was 158 lost, but 0ver a 1000 injured, loss of limbs etc. who lives were forever changed... Thank-you & a Salute for Acknowledging !!!

Captain Goddard, Canada’s first female combat casualty was a friend and school chum of members of the band.
The highway is still called the 401 but, the area from the Trenton Airforce Base to the Coroner’s office in Toronto is the 100 miles of the highway has also been named the Highway of Heroes.

Here in Victoria BC Canada crying as every time I watch these videos my chest gets so tight it hurts.
These lads are from my home town. And they were classmates of Capt Nicola Goddard ( RMC and Capt of infantry ) who was KIA in the Ghan. PAX! I also want to remember Trooper Karin Blaise from Gaspe who was killed by a IUD with the Van Doos or perhaps PPCLI. Loved and remembered! BTW I was in the US Army from 65 to 68.
I'm from western Canada I'm proud what our country can do to help out but were Canadian we like to help out.

The one exception was British born Canadian diplomat Glyn Berry. He was burried in Wales and the troops he was working with brought him back. My friend was one of the pall bearers.

American mom here... Son unable to serve but helps me put up the flag and drives me to the Military Cemetery 3 times a year where my father is. I first heard this song due to a short run TV show, that the military haters got off the air quick as spit. But the song played after loosing a Battle Nurse in a MASH type show I immediately began looking for and found this and have been thankful ever since. All Vets, walking home to experience PTSD later when home, the walking wounded that come home to rehab and bills that sometimes breaks families to the All gave some, some gave All motto..... This is the least they deserve and thankfully Canada can provide it. America is to petty and divided to show quiet respect. We have our Motorcycle guard to get between the hate spitting "CHURCH" one I wouldn't piss on if it was on fire..their opinion , mine... But Carry me softly is every soilders right in respect for giving rights to the other side.. Would love to see the band at Buckingham to play it sometime for the Queen.. These guys do Canada Proud... God Bless the Queen...

This highway starts in my town, one of the downsides of living near a base, seeing the amount of kids that have been driven down that road
I was living in Ottawa that day. The city basically shut down because of a misguided foreign youth who shot Nathan in the back while he was standing duty on The Canadian War Monument.
He made his way to the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings where he was gunned down after making his way inside.
It was a horrible day and unforgettable for all of the wrong reasons.

In Iraq there is still war going on so my family and I can’t go back and my great grandfather was apart of the war so he passed away and it’s really sad to see all theses loving and caring people risking there lives for us.
