  • My battery kept dying on me whenever I would shut my bike off after a ride so I replaced the Alternator and when that didn't work I replaced the Rectifier Regulator. #royalenfield #deadbattery #RectifierRegulator #alternator #continentalgt650

    Same bike, same issue, same fix. Dealer did it under warranty. Internet forums are rife with complaints about this part. Sorry you had to go through this grief but thanks for the fine tutorial.

    The procedure for checking a battery issue is the same for cars and motorcycles
    1. you start with checking the battery voltage with vehicle not running using a multimeter - it should read 12.3 to 12.6 volts
    2. if it is lower you must charge it with a battery charger until it reaches 12.3 to 12.6 Volts - if it won't charge the battery is weak
    note: if the voltage while starting drops below 11 Volts the battery is weak - a battery tester tool will confirm this
    3. now that the battery is fully charged , start the vehicle and check the voltage while running
    - it should be 13.2 to 13.8 Volts indicating proper charging
    4. if it reads the same as when it is not running , the charging circuit is not charging - troubleshoot charging components
    5. in this specific case the Royal Enfield 650 has a known weakness with the rectifier failing
    this known issue is due to excessive heat due to the location at the lower rear of the engine causing failure
    many owners have fixed this issue by relocating the new rectifier to the front forks with an extension cable
    recommended YT videos
    Interceptor 650. Rectifier/regulator re-location summary
    ruclips.net/video/oPRl3x5nqcI/видео.html
    email address is jamesengland1000@gmail.com
    also there is another known issue
    Symp: poor charging - no voltage at fuse box
    ruclips.net/video/QIFetThX5lc/видео.html
    Prob : corroded connector at starter motor solenoid
    fix: splice in new connector and seal with grease or tape
    also stators can fail but this is more rare and normally occurs on older bikes - see @sicks6six comment below
    hoping this is helpful for all RE 650 owners

    every bike I ever had with charging problems it was the stator plate, when tested with a multimeter they seemed OK but when you put a stator plate in from a bike you know was good the problem vanished, often the wrong solder can cause problems and the insulation is not good enough and often the bike needs to heat up for the stator to start to malfunction, german and Japanese stator plates are the best I've found, the windings and the soldered connections are the best, but as I say testing with a multimeter often tells you everything is OK but under load and when hot they stop working properly, very hard to track those faults down without a stator off a bike you know is OK,

    I had the same issue another symptom of a failed rectifier regulator is the abs warning light turning back on after riding for 30min and the instrument backlight turning off

      The knowledge would be some simple voltage and resistance checks to identify the exact problem, not just start swapping out parts. No idea why he replaced the stator. He keeps calling it the alternator, but bikes use a rotor and stator, with a regulator rectifier. What the rectifier regulator does is take excess electricity and convert it to heat. These fail when they are hidden on the bike away from airflow and overheat. So just replacing it will just lead to another failure. It needs to be relocated.

    This is the type of thing that stops me from buying a RE int650. The motor seems strong but if i have to rebuild the entire electrical system it hardly seems worth it. Wonder if RE will rectify the electrical weak points.

      @TAMAdventures  10 месяцев назад +4

      It's very unfortunate that's the case. When buying a bike this new it should be expected for the RR to last much longer.

    Is that the correct mileage ? and the system went bad ? I would expect this system to last much longer... as in 25000 or more.... I have a 2020 Interceptor that just turned 5200 miles... so far no issues. Thank you :)

      @TAMAdventures  8 месяцев назад +1

      I've read online it's an issue these REs face because of its placement. I sure expected it to last longer. Best of luck with yours

      You need to pull up on the red clip. It is very snug. I thought I pulled it up enough at first and it wouldn't come out, still needed a little extra. See 1:42 in the video to see how it should look.

    to check the charging system put your volt meter on the battery, you will see a voltage increase when you start the engine.

    • @TAMAdventures
      @TAMAdventures  10 месяцев назад

      Thank you for the comment! The reason I didn't do that is because I knew the battery wasn't charging. I was trying to check if it was the alternator bad or something in between.

    • @DANTHETUBEMAN
      @DANTHETUBEMAN 10 месяцев назад +2

      @@TAMAdventures this is a way to check the alternator, you get 12.5 volts from a good battery, and if the alternator is working when you start the bike you get 13.75 to 14.5 volts. you got it, and your back on the road. 🤠

    • @iandusud

      Yes first thing to do is test to see if the battery is charging. After that test the alternator for output. However my first suspect on a modern motorcycle would be the rectifier regulator. I had two RRs fail on a 2001 Triumph Bonnie. I replaced the third one with a Mosfet type. These are more expensive but MUCH more reliable. I modified a s/h one from a Yamaha something or other. Universal ones are available and they handle heat much better and would be my choice on the RE particularly as the RR is situated behind the motor rather than in the more conventional position out front and in the wind.

    great video: Old school = permatex RED only= heat /oil /and gas proof!!!!!! even use it as the gasket .. if scuff up with drill motor from walmart.. and wire wheel ! always wash hands with dawn to get oil off! Plus always finish the clean surface with paint thiner or carb cleaner in a pinch.. or wipe alcohol... want it fast dry /clean .. apply permatex thin as you possibly can!!!!! too much is Really bad .. plug up oil ports ! if bur- take it off with a knife hone! keeps it flat..
