New exclusive video with 5 BONUS Picks for 2024 is up on www.patreon.com/foolishbaseball. This is probably giving away too much, but fans of the Mets, Tigers, Orioles, Reds, and Astros should be pretty interested in checking that one out.
@samissly Actually he's gonna stay and pitch so well that they have a historic season on the back of a starting pitcher alone and he will carry us to the world series and he will start throwing fastballs so fast that they break the sound barrier and in game 4 of the world series he's gonna throw one so hard that ohtani fucking dies and the dodgers forfeit and obama will be there and the sox will call me onto the field and say they never could have done it without me and my dad will come back from the store and say he's proud of me and the whole world will sing in perfect harmony
Diamondbacks fan checking in. I'd be happy with a career average year from Eduardo Rodriguez. Give me an ERA just north of 4, like 30 starts, and like 150 each innings and strikeouts, and that's enough to make me happy. Brent Strom can unlock consistency in guys that I'm hoping can buck the potential downturn of his optics and projections. We also have two proven GUYS and one playoff-forged lad in there already so it's not like he has a huge amount of weight on his shoulders. Be a contributor, keep us in games most of the time, and the rest will shake out.
Schanuel got scouted at a 50 league average on power, had plenty of pop in college ball. It's an understandable and valid point but I think I also place him VERY likely to be able to defy that prediction as well. It works in his favor that it's more of a single-faceted issue, considering he's a solid all-around player. If he gets the exit velo up and punishes the zone, it's pretty undoubtable he'll be REALLY good, anyone who can put up close to a .400 OBP is a very valuable lineup asset, especially in front of someone like Trout. On the other hand, if he can't get the EV up, he's gonna be so predictable and attackable as a pitcher, and he'll have to drop to the bottom of the lineup.
I have the same thought, he was known as a power hitter in college above all else (to opposing teams) so I think once he is comfortable he will settle in and hit some jacks
Tf are you talking about with Schanuel, I mean he hasn't been great, I'd it's a shade below expectations but he's still been more or less a League average starter. Absolutely not a +2, probably a neutral.
I am curious as to what would qualify as you being right about Bednar. If he has a 2.8 ERA and goes 35/40 on save chances, and his k rate drops to 28%, would that mean you were right or wrong?
That's gonna be tough. I'd probably give that a 1 thumbs down or a neutral if I was being really generous with myself. I probably get into thumbs up territory with an ERA somewhere in the 3s and two thumbs up if it's in the 4s.
Big believer in Noah, he’s very young and I think it’s unfair to say he hasn’t done damage in such a small mlb sample size. I think he’ll start slower but finish really well with more power. I’m sure he worked with mlb coaching to up his bat speed during this offseason
You should do a video a Kris Bryant! As a Cubs fan, the recent article on Bryant in the Athletic was depressing. Guy was on a hall of fame trajectory, won the NL MVP in 2016 and ended the Cubs historic draught and now if he has a horrible season, he might be on his way out of baseball at the age of 31/32. Idk maybe it’s not enough for a full fledged video and I’m just sad for Kris Bryant. But there’s got to be other guys who have had tremendous early peaks in their career only to fall off later/ quickly after (Jason Heyward anyone?). A video on what could have been, I suppose
As a Phillies fan, I badly wanted Castellanos traded after he went 0 for his last 23 in the NLCS vs. Arizona. He epitomizes the Phillies streakiness on offense, which is why their playoff runs have fallen short the past two seasons. Scoring lots of runs doesn't help as much if it's 10 runs one game then 0 the next. Their situational hitting killed them in last season's NLCS and in the WS the previous season in closer games. Casty can definitely go an a tear from time to time but the Phillies offense needs to be less "boom or bust" and more consistent on a game by game basis. Casty is the most problematic hitter in the lineup when it comes to being able to change the team's hitting approach. I also think his lack of plate approach bodes poorly for him as a hitter as he gets older. Say what you want about Schwarber's batting average, but his eye at the plate and his overall power should age better then Castellanos' "close your eyes and swing the bat" brand of hitting.
I’ll be honest I much prefer this channel over foolish baseball. I like the more straightforward style of this content instead of the super highly produced content of your other channel. The lower editing requirement is also great because it means you can make more videos here (This is still very well edited and produced though). I’m also a bit younger than you so the 90’s/early 2000’s nostalgia vibes you go for on FB don’t really hit for me. Still all great content though.
@@__blessings__imagine what type of person types like this guy then imagine him being a part of your family. I feel bad for the people in your life that actually have to deal with your weird ass lmao
Bauer? When I see comments like this I immediately know this person doesn’t know what they are talking about and didn’t take any time to do research...
The further you get from what’s actually happening on the field the more inherently flawed the stat. FIP is already one stage removed, but xFIP is at least two.
You could be right about Castellanos but I think his success hinges on Harper’s health mostly. He’ll get better pitches to hit if the team can stay healthy
Oh I see how it is Bailey In all seriousness, Castellanos will probably be his .800 ops like every year. I'd personally be shocked if he regresses back to how he hit in 2022, but if people think he's 2021 Castellanos, he isn't anymore.
You'd be right to worry about ERod, if he hadn't landed in Arizona. His high contact% is going to sting much less when he's got the best defense in baseball behind him. His HR/FB rate is concerning but Chase Field is just as about as good at Comerica at holding fly balls. Obviously home run luck is beyond just park dimensions but if he can stay healthy I think it's a perfectly fine signing.
Where are you seeing leagues best defense? The DBacks' defense was league average last year and didn't do anything to improve on that, so basic logic would say that it's gonna be pretty likely the DBacks have another year as a league average defense.
@@chrisferri4667uh well they were best by outs above average, 4th best by defensive runs saved, 2nd best by total zone runs… I don’t know where one could possibly be seeing them as “average”
@@Shshshshshhshhs they were 10 OAA behind the Brewers, which is the difference between the DBacks and the Mariners, and frankly the reason why they have a higher UZR than other teams has more to do with the fact that functionally none of the starters missed any prolonged time (because, yknow UZR at its core is a counting Stat. It also explains why there's such a gap between the team's UZR and it's UZR/150 which puts them on par with Toronto and SD). The only player who has put up a UZR greater than 10 in any of the past 3 seasons is Christian Walker. They're good, but they're in essence a collection of average defenders and a good defender at first that looks better when you add up the total numbers but aren't individually great. It's a pretty major step behind Milwaukee's defense, and the gap between those two is greater than the gap between Arizona and the rest of the average to good defenses.
@@chrisferri4667I mean I’ll give you credit for putting a lot of effort into trying to back up an objectively incorrect statement but no man please stop with this cherry-picked logical diarrhea the dbacks are not average at defense…
@@Shshshshshhshhs Cherry picked by using the same numbers you cited (and incorrectly stated were best in the league by the way), and pointing out why the numbers you yourself picked don't paint the picture you're claiming they do? The team is good, and has an extremely bright future, but please don't be like the Giants, Phillies, or Padres fans that went way overboard after their respective teams got good a few years ahead of schedule after years of failure.
Cease's velocity is back up at Spring Training and he might be one of the few guys I believe when he says he's "in the best shape of [his] life" this time around. Sox definitely wanted too much for him, but I think he's going to clock in closer to 2022 Dylan than 2023 Dylan, when all is said and done.
I agree, and I actually think he'll add power. Players don't tend to add an awareness of the zone, but he's much larger than Kemp or Perdomo, hit 19 HR in 59 games his last year of college, and already has demonstrated better discipline (albeit in a much smaller sample) than either of them anyway. I don't think they're particularly comparable.
I don't know if people have realized this, but this will probably be another Semien down year. He has alternated between MVP candidate to underperformer every year
Does anyone know of a stat that records average distance of batter makes contact from in front of the plate? I wanna see what big leaguers let the ball travel the furthest
1) If he can whiff less and keep up his bat speed, he should be fine, though his defense will almost certainly go down. 2) He clearly has the most to prove out of anybody on here, as well as the most room to grow. He won’t replicate last season, but he should continue to grow into his own 3) Always been mid, always will be 4) He’ll improve once he’s not a White Sock anymore 5) I see what you’re saying, and even if his ERA goes up from last year (it will), he’ll still get saves
It's easy to say Schanuel won't perform well. Besides Trout, the angels have had many top prospect hitters dissappoint(Jo Adell, Matt Walsh) and have traded prospects that have flourished(Brandon Marsh). Not to say that this pick is wrong. In fact I agree with you. However, it is pretty well known that the prospect development for the Angels has been poor historically, making this pick safer than some may think.
Watched this several days ago when it came out, coming back to it now after the Padres traded for him. I'm not high on it, I'll be honest. I never bought into the "Padres are lacking in starting rotation depth for 2024" narrative that was going around because you eventually have to get innings from your young guys at some point, and I genuinely believed Thorpe and Iriarte could comprise some of that production. Thorpe is slated as having elite command, and Iriarte is a fireballer who cracks nearly 100 on his fastball. Perhaps this video is getting me too down on this Cease trade, but man it sure doesn't make me feel great lol. Good video as always.
As a dodgers fan Gavin lux, dude is like jeter on defense and his injury troubles might impact his hitting. They’re gonna prolly start miggy Rojas at short for fielding purposes
I kind of take the opposite approach with Nick Castellanos with similar logic. He changed his hitting philosophy as a veteran, and it’s hard to do so. With mild success last year, I think he becomes more comfortable with his new approach and has a bounce back year
i saw dylan cease in the thumbnail and i immediately disliked. we have Robert and Cease, thats it, don’t hurt me more then i already have. you’ll see the brian banister effect soon.
I am going to say Gabriel Moreno. All of his offense was propelled by high BaBIP. He hits into a lot of double plays with his 55% GB rate and is somehow as bad at base running as Alejandro Kirk. His defense will make him shine, but his offense may struggle if it needs to rely on BaBIP.
Bailey is really only looking at Castellanos as a hitter. His fWAR is dragged down by his defense. He's saying the 109 wRC+ from last year will take a big hit.
Don't be obtuse for the sake of it, the point of these videos are for players projected to have good seasons to have bad ones or to underperform relative to expectations
Sorry for the dislike but if you're gonna thumbs down the man that thinks Scooby Doo is a super hero - Nick Castellanos - I can't look you in the eye anymore. I am kidding
kind of surprised the story about schanuel standing all day every day for a week didnt dissuade this pick. totally agree on cease though, i saw the velo drop on his fangraphs a couple weeks ago and it is kind of worrying!
Bo Bichette’s rapidly approaching Baez/Tim Anderson right before they collapsed, if he hasn’t already. Declining isolated power, plate discipline going somehow from terrible to godawful, BABIP up to .360? As a Red Sox fan, I hope the Jays splurge on him and Vladdy Jr.
Do you lean more towards liking or disliking Marcus Semien this year after his fantastic Iron Man and MVP caliber season last year? Based on expectations for this year
He's gotta be one of the most dependable big leaguers right now. Remember, he had an MVP caliber season for Toronto in 2021. He seems to mainly kick ass in odd numbered years though, but if he's playing every single game at 2nd base and hitting above average that's great value.
Even in his first year in Texas, he was really good, just not MVP vite level. It's hard to think of any team turning a season like that down from an almost mid30s middle infielder
@@TheGilchrist707 Marcus Semien is probably my favorite MLB player whose nickname isn't "sho-time". Absolutely solid to the core playing a position that gets so little recognition.
I dislike John Fisher and Dave Kaval. Maybe Forst and Beane will trade them for a half eaten day old sandwich from Jimmy John’s to help feed the MiLBers. Might be the best deal we can find

Don't be obtuse for the sake of it, the point of these videos are for players projected to have good seasons to have bad ones or to underperform relative to expectations
I understand your concerns with Nick but you really undervalue his pure vibes
i remember a specific game where bednar somehow miraculously survived a padres rally that haunts me still
I was listening to that game on the bus and multiple people asked if I was OK because I was white-knuckling the whole time xD
As a white Sox fan, if cease is cooked, what’s the point
You don't like Nolan Shanool???
Sorry for the dislike but if you're gonna thumbs down the man that thinks Scooby Doo is a super hero - Nick Castellanos - I can't look you in the eye anymore.
I am kidding
kind of surprised the story about schanuel standing all day every day for a week didnt dissuade this pick. totally agree on cease though, i saw the velo drop on his fangraphs a couple weeks ago and it is kind of worrying!
Missed the Dylan Cease Prediction but the David Bednar prediction was amazing
Castellanos still owns the Braves and is Spencer Strider's father, so he's a massive W in my book
Word on the street is that Cease cares much more about non-baseball things (disc golf, business ventures) than the average baseball lover would think.
Guy ended up being DEAD WRONG about Schanuel. 11HR thusfar and a .343 OBP suggest he's been able to threaten damage well enough.
Schanuel has a 105wrc+ as a below average defender at 1st base and a poor runner, I think this take was pretty good.
@@fredreickweaver809 yeah he cooled off right after i posted this 😂
And there’s a line drive by Castellanos.
Do you lean more towards liking or disliking Marcus Semien this year after his fantastic Iron Man and MVP caliber season last year? Based on expectations for this year
Liking
He's gotta be one of the most dependable big leaguers right now. Remember, he had an MVP caliber season for Toronto in 2021. He seems to mainly kick ass in odd numbered years though, but if he's playing every single game at 2nd base and hitting above average that's great value.
Even in his first year in Texas, he was really good, just not MVP vite level. It's hard to think of any team turning a season like that down from an almost mid30s middle infielder
@@TheGilchrist707 Marcus Semien is probably my favorite MLB player whose nickname isn't "sho-time". Absolutely solid to the core playing a position that gets so little recognition.
yall mean to sit here and tell me dylan will cease
as a dbacks fan i am worried about erod but i am Coping by thinking about him working with brent strom
David Bednar is holding Bailey’s family hostage
I'm not an Angels fan but I like Schanuel. Hoping you're wrong about him and he has a good 1st full season.
This poor guy just got to the big leagues and already has Bailey disliking him that’s tough.
Cease is overrated imo
Crazy how every pitcher finishing in Top-9 for AL Cy Young in 2022 either fell off or won't be pitching cause of injury
what are you talking about? this isnt true lol
@@freshprince3573 Verlander, Cortes, Framber and Bieber declined, Manoah and Cease dropped off HARD, Ohtani and Mclanahan got UCL
@@pranavarora9976 you need to edit your comment to say 2022
@@freshprince3573 oh, yeah that's what I meant, somehow forgot to type 2022, my bad.
DROP THE TOP 50 DAWG I NEED IT

Top of the hour upload. A tradition like no other
Nolan Schanuel is gonna be great, he has more 100+ mph batted balls this spring than he did all last season
The key for Nick Castillanos to hit more home runs is.. He HAS TO have the opportunity to hit a home run at an inappropriate moment.
Castellanos is one of my favourite players. He is going for 40 tanks this year and no one can tell me otherwise
I’m here to predict a reverse jinx for all of them
wheres shohei ohtani
I’m glad you clarified stats wise not personally.
This Bednar pick will age like milk his blown saves came after overuse and affected his control late into the season
I think Schanuel is pronounced Shan-yew-ul.
I'm with you doubting huge on Schanuel
I dislike John Fisher and Dave Kaval. Maybe Forst and Beane will trade them for a half eaten day old sandwich from Jimmy John’s to help feed the MiLBers. Might be the best deal we can find
genuinely concerned for your safety after picking Castellanos. Ask not for whom the bell tolls…
Miduardo midriguez
Hating David bednar is a crime.
This starts off so damn funny with the Thom Brennaman reference
I am FIENDING for the Foolish 50
