    Hello everyone Thank you for your continued support. I posted a video recently about Abi and I going our separate ways. You can watch that video for more info. We were months (streets) ahead for Community so we have several more reactions to drop to youtube. We watched up to episode 14, and those will still come out weekly until we reach episode 14. Please click on Abi's links to support her and find her content there. Thank you for enjoying our discussions and interactions.

    It's a huge, huge shame that Chevy Chase was difficult to work with, and ALSO a huge, huge shame that Harmon didn't handle that relationship and situation better, because honestly, I say without exaggeration, this is one of Chevy Chase's best work (I mean this episode and the show in general). He is AMAZING as Pierce and AMAZING in this episode as the villain. Difficult to work with...etc, but I dont want to take anything away from his talent, I mean a good villain makes the story better and wow, he was amazing. Such a shame he couldn't be in the show for as long as the regular cast. One of the best Community episodes and the episode that got me interested in DnD (though I dont play it lol).
    Also, agreed @ everything you guys said about blackface...etc. Action is by intention and we can clearly see that Chang wasn't even thinking of blackface when he put on that makeup.

      i agree with your assessment of this being chevy chases best work(this episode), and i think his best single line delivery was in the debate episode when he tells britta "how DARE you pity me?!"
      i disagree about the whole "black face" thing.
      snowflakes caused the episode to be canceled.
      dark elves are not black humans, but the whole concept of "black face" is ridiculous.
      robert downey jr played a role completely in blackface in tropic thunder, and it was awesome. dave chappel did a character in "white face" and it was also awesome.
      it's ridiculous to choose to feel offended(offense is ALWAYS taken, never given) because someone wore some makeup that makes their skin tone seem a different one than their natural skin tone.
      but the people of usakistan are retarded.....

      They tried. It just wasn’t sustainable.

      @@LtFrankDrebin100 The question to ask is why were they doing 14+ hour shoots and why wasn't anyone pointing out how inhumane that is? Look, I know that Chevy Chase had other issues, and I don't want to make stuff up which I haven't adequately researched, but I've heard stories about racism (irl, not just Pierce). But this thing about the super long shoots and Chevy Chase not wanting to do them: good for him. The other actors should have presented a united front and told Harmon they all weren't going to do it. Honestly, the more I hear about Harmon's behaviour on set and in the background, the less I think of him.

    When you really look at it the whole episode is about trying to prevent a severely depressed person from committing suicide. There’s actually video on RUclips that shows how Dan Harmon essentially tricked NBC into allowing them to make this episode, NBC a kept saying no because they said it was too different from the safe and formulaic sitcoms they already had that had better ratings at the time.
    And I’m sad to say I’m in my 30’s and have never played D&D in my life. Not that I avoided it, it’s just that me and my friends were too into video games to play tabletop games. And none of us knew anyone who played.

      It's possible that if you tried, you could maybe find a handful of people who were offended by Chang in his dark elf makeup, but I personally never heard about it generating any kind of outcry, so I'm not sure you could say that the episode was "cancelled" in the usual sense. It seemed more like streaming services acted out of an overabundance of caution rather than in response to actual complaints. Putting a simple disclaimer up before the episode would have probably been more than sufficient.

    • @MarcosElMalo2

      It’s definitely in the top five episodes. The show was definitely intentionally courting controversy, following in the fooshtepshs of Blazing Saddles and Tropic Thunder. The biggest difference is 1) that those were movies and Community was a broadcast TV show. 2) Another difference: The main target of Blazing Saddles’ satire was racism. Tropic Thunder was parodying what was a common practice of casting white actors in non-white roles. It’s not clear to me exactly what Community was parodying with Chang’s blackface. Were they trying to provoke the easily provoked into a gotcha? That’s one possible reading. But then Pierce has the Al Jolson line-he sees it as blackface.
      The joke is hard to parse (which personally, I love about it) and the target of the satire isn’t clear. Is it people who assume that Drowface is blackface? The easily offended? Those people easily outraged by people who get offended? To me, it’s ambiguous.
      And that’s the difficulty. Primetime Broadcast TV serves the lowest common denominator and generally tries not to cause offense. An ambiguous racial joke that doesn’t spell out what the audience is supposed to laugh at is kryptonite to TV executives. That’s just how is. I think the idea to pull the episode was the wrong decision, but I understand why Sony did it.

      I didn’t find it offensive, either. But then I’m neither a Drow or an African-American. If someone does find it offensive, I’m not going to tell them they’re wrong (or worse, try to convince them their wrong). It doesn’t mean that they’re overly sensitive or easily offended. Major kudos to both of you for actually knowing the actual definition of blackface. Even a lot of people who defend this episode, refer to it as acceptable blackface. To be blackface it needs to be a caricature of black people and black culture. So even Olivier's portrayal of Othello (a white actor using black makeup to play a black character) isn't blackface because there isn't the element of mockery. You could argue that it's inappropriate, but it's not blackface. Blackface is a very specific act, with a specific history of hurt and malice. Diluting the meaning to include other things you might find offensive reduces and minimizes the history of blackface.

      It was removed from Netflix and Hulu in 2020 during the George Floyd protests because of Chang's blackface (even though the show in no way endorses his blackface).

  • @aozf05
    @aozf05 2 года назад

    Nobody even complained about the blackface in this episode. It got cancelled by the streaming services preemptively to avoid potential criticism because some other example of blackface had just gotten some attention around that time and the lockdowns had just started around then so everyone was hunkering down in front of their tvs. I think it was 30 Rock or Golden Girls. Scrubs also ended up getting 3 episodes removed from all streaming services.

    I always felt that Pierce's bullying & fat shaming of a suicidal person was way more problematic than Chang's non-blackface. Also him saying that he'd sexually assault the Ducane family was another moment. And I'm far from one of those d-bags that complains about *cAnCeL CuLtUrE* all the time either, but this definitely shouldn't have been cancelled. Although *I can* appreciate Netflix being cautious, but they should really rethink that decision.
    *Edit:* Annie's moment with the Elf Maiden 😂🤣😭💀

      Well it was portrayed as wrong, Pierce was the villain in the end, so I don't see the problem. It's a hard scene but It conveys a good message in the end.

    • @pajander

      I guess it's problematic if you're of the opinion that any depiction of any problematic behavior is in itself problematic. None of the characters were laughing at the bullying and fat shaming, they were all horrified by it.

    I understand why people want to "cancel" this episode, but cant understand how they let every other ignorant racist remark Chang or Pierce has made slide. This wasnt done for the sake of progress but virtual signaling. I mean the ignorant statements Chang made in Spanish class is enough for someone to be tarred and feathered in the twitterverse...
    That being said this episode's message is far deeper than people want to believe. As someone who lost a family member and a friend to suicide, the act of trying to relate to Neil is such a great concept. The ending itself is even more beautiful with Neil asking Pierce to play some more, dude literally approached his bully and tried to bury the hatchet. The "I feel sorry for pierce" part shows us how sympathizing/understanding an aggressor can help heal our own pain. The positives this ep far outweigh the negative.

    This is one of the best episodes of the entire show and the fact that it was removed from Netflix over such a nothingburger as Chang's Dark Elf makeup is a prime example of corporate reactionary behavior in the era of cancel culture. It fundamentally misunderstands what blackface is, why it is offensive, and its history in America. Which is, itself, kind of offensive.
    Glad you both enjoyed the episode. I've enjoyed your reactions!

  • @bloatus7611
    @bloatus7611 2 года назад

    The Al Jolson joke is funny cause it makes Netflix's decision to remove it even sillier. It's their second in-show joke about it being mistaken for blackface. It's also a double whammy for Pierce being old enough to know one of the most famous blackface performers ever. It was never cancelled by anyone and people who get in a huff about it "being cancelled" just kinda wanna be mad about SJWs or whatever the fuck.

    I'm pretty sure nobody actually asked to get this cancelled, it's just corporations doing corporation things. It's extra gross when it's an episode concerning bullying, body image, depression and suicide. I can't even watch this episode without crying, but sure, let's try to delete this from human history just because some asshole from the marketing department thought that would be the optimal play.

    Part of the joke with the dark elf is how oblivious Chang is as well. They draw attention to it and acknowledge what it looks like while also letting you know it's not that and that the character just didn't think it through and then the one who called it black face was the old bigoted villain.
