To Eric’s question about Chang, it is worth noting that Chang is never offensive or mean on accident. If he were doing blackface maliciously, you’d know. His character is pretty consistently shown differently than Pearce. Pearce will be racist because he doesn’t think about it. Chang will rub your face in it if he’s trying to insult you.
Chang is the person who wouldn’t think about the context when doing it, but also wouldn’t care/would deflect when confronted about it being problematic
Honestly, the weirdest thing about it is that he did it despite not even having created a character, and picked a sheet at random. Like, I don’t even think it’s confirmed that Brutalitops was a Drow. He really just came as a random fictional race.
As a Black person: I don't think the blackface is a problem. It's not done maliciously, and it's even called out in episode. This is one of my favorite episodes of Community.
I'm not black so I'm not going to speak for you guys, the only thing I will say is there's a difference between those Shane Dawson minstrel show-esque black face skits, and this one. Here it's not making fun of black people, it's making fun of Chang for being so dumb and oblivious to how offensive his makeup is. It's not my place to say it's better, but yeah I don't see it done maliciously or mean spirited, and that should count for something, right?
As a white guy: I dont even think this is blackface. Blackface and a black face seem like two different things. Like if you cosplay as a shadow or dark elf or something similar that seems fine. If you paint your face black and start going on about watermelon or what ever the latest stereotypes are for black people, then that would be blackface. Like a child painting their face to look like a lion or the sun, that would be yellow face and racist to asians, cause they arent painting their face to be asian.
@@whatwhatinthewhat4400 You’re not wrong, but I would advise (just advise, I’m not trying to force anyone, so nobody freak out) any white or light-skinned person to not paint their face black regardless of the context especially if you live in North America. I mean, when black/dark-skinned people cosplay light-skinned characters, I virtually never see them doing anything to “lighten” their faces. Besides, for D&D dark elves, they have more shades of skin color than black, so choosing specifically black paint to put on one’s face would come off as if they’re trying to be controversial rather than any “I just want to be authentic!” angle.
The Hector scene had me crying laughing the first time I saw it. The bloopers for it are so funny too! I'm glad they let Alison Brie had so much fun with it
I once had a conversation with a black friend about this episode, her opinion was that a) while it is black face makeup, black face historically was used to push stereotypes and demean black people. This was clearly not that. And b) the whole joke is that it's horrible. Shirley calls it out as a hate crime. You're supposed to think it's not ok, that's where the comedy comes from. She found it absurd that this episode got pulled
"Blackface" is a very specific term with a very specific meaning. It's not just wearing black paint. As you said, it's about stereotypes, exaggerated features with the intent to demean and mock African Americans. The joke here, at least in my opinion, is the gulf between fans and the general public. Everyone who has ever played D&D immediately recognized the Drow, but non gamers would only see the hurtful image they assumed was being projected.
And as a black man, that is EXACTLY how I feel. The show itself literally emphasized that is the joke. Everyone addressed how shitty blackface was in the same scene. Netflix was just being extra for PC points.
Fun fact: Dan Harmon considers it one of his biggest writing mistakes on Community that he had Pierce say “Maybe” to Neil’s invitation to play more D&D again instead of something more positive and affirmative. He said he felt it might’ve blunted some of Pierce’s worst behavior in the episode and would’ve given him a friend outside the Study Group. Harmon corrected this “mistake” later in the show-but you’ll get there.
Harmon also had trouble keeping his personal feelings towards Chevy separate from Pierce, so I think he enjoyed making him a villain. Chevy is infamously difficult to work with, and we now know Harmon can be just as bad.
@@michaelw8262but that’s also part of what makes pierce such a great character, he is the character you love to hate and he’s also so racist and aggressive and mean that it’s perfect lol. Pierce is easily the best character on the show, atleast for me personally.
@@bigpictureguys8415 same! Imo, Pierce would’ve just said no if he wanted to say no. I took that as a solid yes. I get why people wouldn’t see that though.
Pierce in his most awful way got Neal closure. He now knows who started that nickname and be able to confront Jeff on it. And Jeff in suspended humiliation got rebuked for it. Neal also realized that Pierce’s beef wasn’t with Neal but about his own insecurities and with Jeff and the rest of the study group. He got to be the bigger person, no pun intended.
This is such a good distilling of the episode! Like the group's intentions were good, but the way they were going about giving Neal an easy win wasn't working. He saw through their attempts to humour him and was obviously uncomfortable. It was only when Pierce brought everything to the surface and PUSHED that Neal pushed back and won a real victory. I hope Neal kept his D&D character the same weight as himself from then on, because he shouldn't need to fantasise about being thinner to be happy.
I dont see why Netflix and Hulu cant just put a disclaimer informing viewers about the issues some people have with this episode and let them make their own choice whether they watch it or not rather than just blanket banning it.
Because they're a corporation and only care about the money aspect. It's the "safe" bet. Pretty sure this whole debacle wasn't about Community, it was about the criticism D&D was getting at the time, rightfully so, over it's problematic tropes in characters like orcs or, as Chang is basically pointing out, drow elves. I mean, that's the joke. it *is* obviously a little problematic. Anyone who actually cares about the issue would probably agree with it staying up. That, or they don't understand anti-racist agitprop.
The thing about offense is a person can take offense to almost anything, you can't predict what a person might be offended by. Many people find the behavior of corporations really offensive but they don't change. Intent shouldn't be disregarded, because of only perception matters everything is problematic and everything should be cancelled.
I always think back to season 2 episode 8, when Pierce tries to bite Abed while they cut his cast off in search of Annies pen... Abed says "This is how super villains are created". Here's the proof.
I cannot explain how much I love this episode. It's so creative and funny, the sound effects are perfect and they make us care about Neill so fast, it's just so we'll done
As much fun as this episode is personally I can’t help but kinda hate it, it’s the beginning of the end for Pierce as an at all likeable character for me
If you guys see this message, please remember from now on: anytime Pierce says “what did I ever do” Abed will respond in reference to this episode. I’m saying this because it’s quick and easy to miss.
With the level of excitement Chang gives to his introduction I think he is just so happy that he can finally participate in an activity with the group that he clearly has a lot of knowledge about, D&D, and so he goes all in. It's also likely why he is so crushed when he is taken out so early in the game. Before it was announced there were pre-made character sheets I imagine he planned to be his Drow character.
Chevy caused a lot of real problems on set and on the show, but brother, that dude should have won an Emmy for this episode. What a masterclass. Just a brilliant show, start to end
And I still can't believed they banned this episode. One of the highest rated episodes of the whole show. No one ever complained about this episodes for YEARS since it was released but suddenly they pulled it off...
The writing and sound design of this episode it so good that you barely notice that it's just characters sitting and talking. It feels so epic even though there are no major events.
It's interesting reading Harmon's interviews of how he originally conceived the characters and how they evolved based on the actors and audience response to them as the show aired.
@@helenfhninI thought it was a gag to piss off Jeff for wasting time trying to find someone who spoke Goblin when Abed understood ‘Pegasus’ in the first place
For like 6 billion people in the world it is only a couple of modern languages don't use that word. It's like pineapple being the same in every European language (bar english)
I think they're frustrating thing for a lot of fans about this episode being pulled for " black face " Is as you all said the context doesn't really make sense in that regard, and even worse next season there is an episode where Pierce is in brown face for most of the episode and it is not in any way ambiguous. He is pretending to be a stereotypical "brown person ". It's never been pulled or questioned.
I recently binged this show and totally missed this episode. I'm glad the discussion mentioned it getting pulled because I had no idea how I did. Now other stuff makes more sense.
I'm curious to see what will happen on the Community channel on RUclips, which is running through the episodes again and should be at 2x14 in a few days...
I've seen many POC react to this episode and they clearly did not have a problem with it. Maybe because they knew what a Drow is and know it's a fantasy race but even if you don't know that, I would think the context of why he was painted like that still helps. A simple search of a Drow online would make people realize the context more. Anyways given how this episode is many people favorite beside from the paintball episode, I was surprised it got backlash
i don't think I heard a single thing about this episode in the big push to remove episodes with blackface in them, people wanted streaming services to remove things with genuinely offensive blackface in them and streaming services decided to just nuke anything even remotely related regardless of whether or not it bothered anyone.
@@connorboyle2585 The thing is, people didn't want that lol. They wanted actual things to happen and media companies decided to respond with facile shit because Hollywood has no real interest in addressing anything in a meaningful way. It would've made more sense for them to try to work behind the scenes to improve working conditions for black people.
@@connorboyle2585 this, it’s funny seeing people be like “ohh, it was so controversial! Snowflakes got offended!” And you go look and there’s barely any controversy about it at all lol
I don't remember there being any outcry about this episode, it seems to be more of a pre-emptive strike. I have even seen some POC creators making videos about this episode any they did not find it offensive because given the context in their opinion it was not a black face. But yeah, it doesn't mean there aren't people offended by this. Given my skin color, this is not my place to speak. It's shame because this is definitely in top 5 episodes of the whole show.
Corporations will overreact to anything if they think there's even a slight chance they might lose some money. And it's the only reason they will ever react and has absolutely nothing to do with morality or culture or anything else.
I love Community and this episode. I was not offended by Chang since he is a fictional character and not portraying someone of an actual race to perpetuate stereotypes. It is an example and maybe a bit foreshadowing of how far Chang will get into his roles...The show immediately addresses it thru Shirley when she calls it a "hate crime" and he clearly explains it.
No...Wait, what? lol. The joke is that it _is_ problematic/kinda racist. That Chang is unhinged. It's literally the same joke with RDJ in Tropic Thunder. What? How do people not get this? There are problems with D&D characters and depictions. Orcs, drow elves, etc.
Best thing about this episode is that Pierce ended up helping "Fat Neil", as instead of beating Pierce as his super buff Avatar, he defeated Pierce as himself.
I've been watching Community on Netflix for so long but I never even knew that this episode existed! I went through the effort of buying the episode via RUclips and I gotta say that was a RIDE

For anyone who wants more of this kind of D&D content in their life, Dan Harmon created another show called HarmonQuest! Dan Harmon plus 3 friends and 1 rotating special guest per episode play D&D in front of a live studio audience. The format and humor is very similar to Community's D&D episodes, PLUS it has animated segments of their characters actually fighting and questing. It's a fun show and I recommend it to anyone who loves goofy D&D adventures!
@@ImAlsoMerobiba yeah it's an odd type of show to react to as well. It'd be like reacting to episodes of whose line or SNL, what with the live audience and improv format
In defence of Pierce, Pierce was the one who helped Neal the most. He got jeff to apologise to Neal. That was when Neal started to be okay. Jeff's plan to help Neal was really shallow and he never would have apologised cause he doesn't wanna be seen as the bad guy.
Fair. Maybe I didn't mean to defend him, just wanted to point out the irony that Pierce the Dickish accidentally helped someone while being a dick. Reckon even Neal knew Pierce helped him in the end and felt sorry for Pierce cause Pierce just wanted to be included.
Pierce's biggest contribution to Neal getting better was that Neal clearly saw that Pierce hated to be excluded and was acting the way he did because he was hurt by his friends. He was able to stand up and be the hero he was always meant to be. He took his licks and then reached out his hand to help someone else that was hurting like he was.
21:16 Aaron, you all can use your connections to the Normies, who have already watched it a few years ago, and ask them about it ;) Imon and Abi also started the show together, before they split up their channels (I think Imon is still continuing).
An episode being so good that it being removed due to black face is more controversial than the black face scene itself is a testament to how good the writing is lol
I've been looking forward to this reaction! So glad you enjoyed it. It's one of my favourites! On episode 10 of 'The Darkest Timeline Podcast' Joel McHale said that Chevy literally screamed "I can still get erections" on set one day. As I remember it had been random and no one had known why he'd done it. That makes that line extra funny to me. :D
When you really look at it the whole episode is about trying to prevent a severely depressed person from committing suicide. There’s actually video on RUclips that shows how Dan Harmon essentially tricked NBC into allowing them to make this episode, NBC a kept saying no because they said it was too different from the safe and formulaic sitcoms they already had that had better ratings at the time. So he forced their hand by turning the script in on LITERALLY the last minute so they had no choice but to make it.🤣🤣 And I’m sad to say I’m in my 30’s and have never played D&D in my life. Not that I avoided it, it’s just that me and my friends were too into video games to play tabletop games. And none of us knew anyone who played.
It's never too late to start! If you can't find an experienced DM, then dive in together and have one of your friend group try DMing for the first time while you all play for the first time. It'll be chaotic, sure, but good D&D always has chaos! 😁
As a black man first and a nerd second, this episode doesn't offend me. In fact, I think a majority of the black community who are fans of this show also don't find it offensive either. The joke is pointing out how racist the description of drow elves sounds. If they wanted it to be true black face they could have done it WAY worse. If anything this episode needs a warning on bullying, because they go pretty hard for this episode on Fat Neal, and they do hint that he's thinking of harming himself if they don't help him out.
When I was a kid my small group of 4 had 2 Garretts in it, me being one of them. I was overweight, he was less so, but to avoid confusion we just adopted our last names as our nicknames, I became King, the other Garrett became Harper, and confusion was broken. 24 years later, even though the other Garrett hasn't been part of our friend group (he was kind of a Pierce type) for a long while, my friends still call me by my last name. Which I do prefer. HATE my first name.
This isn't blackface which is why I don't understand the controversy. "Blackface" isn't when you just paint your face black, it's when you paint your face black to play a black person. This for me is people getting offended to get offended
Things like this episode is why owning physical media is so important. Nonone cam censor your physical media after the fact. It doesn't make sense to me why the streaming services didn't just add a black screen with white type (nothing expensive) at the beginning of this (or any episode of anything that is considered offensive) and say something like: "This episode contains scenes/references that are/could be offensive to viewers. Netflix (or whomever) does not condone these scenes. They are being left in for historical preservation of the content. Viewer discretion is advised" ..... or something very disclaimer/legal like that. I know it is overkill....but then you show sensitivity to whatever the issue is (you can even have the disclaimer call out the specifics, "depictions of 'blackface' /outdated cultural stereotypes"), without deleting content from the show. Disney+ does this in the notes for some older films, like DUMBO (because of the Jim Crow(s) joke). I believe their language is "outdated/insensitive cultural stereotypes". Funny that they gave a disclaimer for that but edited the butt scene in SPLASH (since restored thankfully). It is legitimately one if my favorite episodes of a tv show because of the writing, however it is Dan Harmon's version of a classic IT CROWD episode....that must be said. So it isn't as groundbreakingly original as it often gets credit for.
While there definitely are people who would call for this being removed for the black face, iirc I don't think there was actually any outcry before it was removed. I'm pretty sure Netflix just removed it of their own accord to try to avoid controversy and to appear to be supportive of the cause. It was only really after it was pulled that people started discussing it and whether or not it should be, with Hulu following suit in pulling it. Personally, I think it was pretty short-sighted of them to just outright pull it. If they were really concerned about its offensiveness, I think it would have been far more effective, and caused them a lot less heat, if they had just put a disclaimer before the episode. After all, flat-out removing problematic content is perhaps the least useful thing we can do. You can't deal with and change societal problems if you just ignore them and pretend they don't exist.
Completely agree with Eric. Got bullied for my weight early in school. Beat up a few kids and it stopped. Whether someone agrees with me or not, I am fine with what I did and I will do it again.
What happened with this episode being removed is, people (most likely executives) decided FOR black people that this was offensive - during the George Floyd protests. No black person I've ever asked, like me, has ever said this was offensive.
Really stupid that it was pulled from streaming. I’m someone who believes that pulling all blackface content is a bit ridiculous without considering the context of what the show is doing, and also considering the shows that do it have objectively way more offensive stuff in them. But when the character does it and is blatantly called out for being racist, how could that be looked at as anything but a critique of racism? It’s so paternalistic, like they think we’re too stupid to understand, so any possible racist thing must be hidden, even when it’s obviously not racist. And if you pull this, pretty much every episode of community should go. There’s way more racist, sexist, etc content said by the characters all the time (ie Pierce). But the streaming services went for low hanging fruit. Thank God Mad Men didn’t do this, considering their blackface scene was precisely to show how racism manifested itself in the 60s, but no one would have been surprised if that episode got pulled at that time.
as controversial as this episode is for obvious reasons I'm happy y'all still decided to react because it's honestly one of community's best episodes and I'm sad Netflix decided to delete the whole thing off of their site

Dan Harmon went on to make Harmonquest which was an animated DnD like game with guest stars (was on VrV but im not sure if it still there) for 2 seasons if you enjoyed this episode you'd probably like that!
I don’t believe there was any notable backlash about Chang in this episode- if I remember correctly, it was pulled in 2020 during the George Floyd/BLM uproar. Granted I’m not a POC, so my context is different, but to me it came across as more of a performative half-measure than any kind of tangible action for the larger cause. Someone correct me if I’m way off base though.
I had to go find an old torrent of this episode to watch full length; apparently It's now censored out of existence everywhere except Amazon Prime Video and Amazon has it region locked to the US so I couldn't even buy it there (My VPN didn't even work because it requires a US based credit card/bank account to purchase). Ridiculous! Anyway good reaction as usual, one of my favourite episodes for sure.
@@scarlettmi For some reason all the usual places I'd go to buy it are region locked out of Australia; google play, itunes and prime video are all locked from purchase in AU, although I just checked and for some reason even though it's blocked on google play I CAN buy it through RUclips, or at the very least it looks like I can on the face of it. hmm.... is "Tropic Thunder" available in your area? It would be a hell of a thing if that was allowed but not this episode on various services in your location. The company created "controversy" around the issue is one of the most ridiculous cases of censorship I've seen in a while.
@@chaost4544 HaHa Tropic Thunder is available all the normal places actually, Australia has a lot of things region locked for forced competition/contractual purposes; Australian Netflix has Community and as such a lot of other streaming services don't. I'm not sure if they are specifically prohibited or it's just not cost efficient but generally if one streaming service has a tv show the others don't carry it (movies seem to be on multiple services most of the time) . Since Netflix has community and they were the dumb ones that censored it (I think maybe Hulu did as well at the time from memory?) it makes it rather difficult to find without surfing the high seas, or getting a physical copy.
As someone who is learning to dm I just have to say it; Abed didn’t do a very good job this episode. The DM is not only the arbiter of the game, but also the de facto leader of the table. They can’t take a passive role in player conflict. In this episode abed allows one uninvited player to not only steal from, but one shot kill another pc in a party without rez-spells, to every other player’s protest. He also rewards blatant metagaming, all for the sake of the game worlds internal consistency. He prioritises the games integrity over his player’s enjoyment of it. This is of course not a criticism of the show. These are believable actions, coming from established character flaws, in service of a very good episode. (Yes, I’m very fun at parties)
i'm a year too late, but i would assume that the sword of dukane is some sort of vorpal blade. also this is the best performance of chevy chase, in his whole life
In season 1 episode 2 there was another reference to blackface. Pierce and Jeff’s Spanish presentation there is a moment of them in Afro wigs and white gloved jazz hands (no black face makeup) which was clearly a reference to the minstrel shows that made blackface so infamous. (Shirley and Troy are noticeably bothered by the reference in that clip too)
Problem with big ears is that loud noises or normal noises might cause easier deafness and tinnitus. Like dogs and fireworks. You might have trouble with swimming too due to water flowing into the ear easier.
Addressing _"offense"_ in a more general sense, I always liked what *Ricky Gervais* said of it… _"Just because you're offended, doesn't mean you're right. Some people are offended by mixed marriage, gay people, atheism. So what? Fuck 'em."_ He followed that up with… _"Feeling offended is a personal choice. Freedom Of Speech is a Right. Your CHOICE doesn't trump my RIGHT."_ And finally… _"I'm fairly certain the outside light is on."_ 😐
Yes, there was a time i thought all of that was common sense and when people didn't understand it, i thought they were some weirdo minority group, like extremely religious folks etc. I no longer believe that, it's just too much and it translates into (imo terrible) consequences. Only good thing is that i learned to be very picky about the people i surround myself with.
I really feel like the reason this show gets away with what it gets away with is because it knows it's wrong and it addresses that and never pretends that it isnt. The Fat Neal stuff being wrong (and driving Neal towards depression) was the whole point of the episode, whereas other (less self-aware) comedies would have let it become a punch line and left it at that. I really love that about Community, and it reminds me of Better Off Ted (another show you should check out if you haven't).
Just to mention, I believe Advanced D&D is one of the older versions. Does anyone know if that's how it was played, where just the dm would roll for everyone's actions, or was that just the show?
I DM'd AD&D for almost a decade back in the day. Normally, each person has their own set of dice or share with other players. However, if there's only one set of dice it wouldn't be unheard of for a DM to handle the rolls. I think the show depicted it that way for simplicity's sake.
This episode was pulled alongside other content that actually had been complained about, so I think it was more Netflix being overly cautious rather than people actually complaining about this particular episode. But I'd have much preferred them just adding some trigger warning or explanation about what Chang is actually doing, especially since it isn't really blackface, even if it resembles it visually and could be seen as that without context.
This episode was absolutely not on netflix. Im sure for cowardly reasons, cause this looks great, and i cant believe ive never seen it. Chang as a Drow is amazing!

He said he felt it might’ve blunted some of Pierce’s worst behavior in the episode and would’ve given him a friend outside the Study Group. Harmon corrected this “mistake” later in the show-but you’ll get there.
I mean, i always took the maybe as a yes 🤷🏼♂️. In pierce’s own way
Harmon also had trouble keeping his personal feelings towards Chevy separate from Pierce, so I think he enjoyed making him a villain.
I never liked that Neil asked to play again, that just felt weird and I don't think he would.
Even better was that Neal got to win the game of himself, fat, not his super buff Avatar.
@@phousefilms this too! :D
The way Pierce says "Faaaaat" when shape changing Neil is gold
"make him fat as fat neil" the fat jokes were pretty good tbh
I dont see why Netflix and Hulu cant just put a disclaimer informing viewers about the issues some people have with this episode and let them make their own choice whether they watch it or not rather than just blanket banning it.
Hell, even Disney does that with their older films on Disney+ (like Peter Pan and Dumbo)
It was NBC’s call as I understand it.
There's no need for a disclaimer. There is nothing offensive about it at all.
Did he say that? It's been a while but I thought he said "I think we've gone too far"

I cannot explain how much I love this episode. It's so creative and funny, the sound effects are perfect and they make us care about Neill so fast, it's just so we'll done
As much fun as this episode is personally I can’t help but kinda hate it, it’s the beginning of the end for Pierce as an at all likeable character for me
It is one of my faborite episodes, but it is very much a sort of remake of an IT CROWD episode
It’s finally happened. I saw a dude watching blindwave on the train while I was watching blind wave.
Love from Chicago
If you guys see this message, please remember from now on: anytime Pierce says “what did I ever do” Abed will respond in reference to this episode. I’m saying this because it’s quick and easy to miss.
Behold Hector the Well-Endowed! My favorite scene of the whole show. Alison is fantastic and everyone's expressions/responses are so hilarious
And it made for great material. I think the "I'm 66, dick" line is straight from an actual conversation with Chevy
And I still can't believed they banned this episode. One of the highest rated episodes of the whole show. No one ever complained about this episodes for YEARS since it was released but suddenly they pulled it off...
There are few things in life I love more than the Hector-Elf Maiden scene. What a great episode (and a favourite of Dan and Alison's too)
We’re finally here. One of the funniest episodes of Community
The writing and sound design of this episode it so good that you barely notice that it's just characters sitting and talking. It feels so epic even though there are no major events.
Peirce's final anime villan "It was always me behind the scenes manipulating everything" laugh to Abed is glorious.
It's interesting reading Harmon's interviews of how he originally conceived the characters and how they evolved based on the actors and audience response to them as the show aired.
100%. They started as 7 archetypes and evolved so interestingly into 7 hilarious yet enormously flawed individuals.
The "Did someone say Pegasus, a word I understand in every language" is a reference to Taxi being the same in every language.
I thought it was just a throwaway line? And taxi is definitely not the same in every language.
@@helenfhninI thought it was a gag to piss off Jeff for wasting time trying to find someone who spoke Goblin when Abed understood ‘Pegasus’ in the first place

It's not just double standards it's a different standard for every intersectional identity

I recently binged this show and totally missed this episode. I'm glad the discussion mentioned it getting pulled because I had no idea how I did. Now other stuff makes more sense.
Same here. I watched the first 3 seasons on Netflix and didn’t know this episode existed.
Same here then I watch a reaction of the episode and wondered why I didn’t see it
I'm curious to see what will happen on the Community channel on RUclips, which is running through the episodes again and should be at 2x14 in a few days...

@@syndux But how? I didn't know Dark Elves existed and was fans of this show :O that's crazy I wonder what else from fantasy stories are real.
I don't remember there being any outcry about this episode, it seems to be more of a pre-emptive strike.

This was a very mature and level conversation about Pierce. Big props to Eric! Skinny boys stand in solidarity.
I'd love it if Blind Wave reacted to it, but I know it'll never happen :(.
That's hardly a defense because that was not Pierce's intention.
21:16 Aaron, you all can use your connections to the Normies, who have already watched it a few years ago, and ask them about it ;)
Imon and Abi also started the show together, before they split up their channels (I think Imon is still continuing).
So he forced their hand by turning the script in on LITERALLY the last minute so they had no choice but to make it.🤣🤣
And I’m sad to say I’m in my 30’s and have never played D&D in my life. Not that I avoided it, it’s just that me and my friends were too into video games to play tabletop games. And none of us knew anyone who played.
Take the leap, it's fun!
It's never too late to start! If you can't find an experienced DM, then dive in together and have one of your friend group try DMing for the first time while you all play for the first time. It'll be chaotic, sure, but good D&D always has chaos! 😁
I attack them using ... additional notes 😏
THIS. The bullying is intense.
One of the most GOAT episodes has arrived.
This for me is people getting offended to get offended
i agree but i think it would've been a little better if they'd had Chang make some terrible cardboard cosplay armour to go with it
Things like this episode is why owning physical media is so important. Nonone cam censor your physical media after the fact.
It doesn't make sense to me why the streaming services didn't just add a black screen with white type (nothing expensive) at the beginning of this (or any episode of anything that is considered offensive) and say something like:
"This episode contains scenes/references that are/could be offensive to viewers. Netflix (or whomever) does not condone these scenes. They are being left in for historical preservation of the content. Viewer discretion is advised"
..... or something very disclaimer/legal like that.

Been loving yalls reactions to Community but damn I have been waiting for this day to come!
pierce is a terrible person but he fits in a show like this
Pierce is a complete total villain in Season 2
Completely agree with Eric. Got bullied for my weight early in school. Beat up a few kids and it stopped. Whether someone agrees with me or not, I am fine with what I did and I will do it again.
What happened with this episode being removed is, people (most likely executives) decided FOR black people that this was offensive - during the George Floyd protests. No black person I've ever asked, like me, has ever said this was offensive.
Been waiting for them to get to this episode. also can't wait to see them get to the other paintballs episodes.

I don’t believe there was any notable backlash about Chang in this episode- if I remember correctly, it was pulled in 2020 during the George Floyd/BLM uproar. Oh my God it's finally here! Fantastic episode!
It’s available most places where you can buy episodes, like the iTunes Store, Google Play, and RUclips.
I'm also 90% sure I have the first 4 seasons on DVD somewhere, and I'm paying for Netflix which has the series just not this episode, as such, I don't really have any qualms about pirating it to be honest haha.
hmm.... is "Tropic Thunder" available in your area?
This episode wasn't on Netflix, for some reason.
Ah, I think I see their reason.
Adding to the tail or big ears discussion: I’m a hero academia fan, so tail it is. Ojijro is badass.

In season 1 episode 2 there was another reference to blackface. Pierce and Jeff’s Spanish presentation there is a moment of them in Afro wigs and white gloved jazz hands (no black face makeup) which was clearly a reference to the minstrel shows that made blackface so infamous. (Shirley and Troy are noticeably bothered by the reference in that clip too)
I love this episode as they are so in to it (Dungeons & Dragons).
Out of all the stuff Pierce says everyone else says just as worse stuff just not as often imo, everyone has bad shit to say😂
Still one of the best episodes of all time
Problem with big ears is that loud noises or normal noises might cause easier deafness and tinnitus.
So what? Fuck 'em."_
He followed that up with… _"Feeling offended is a personal choice. Freedom Of Speech is a Right. Your CHOICE doesn't trump my RIGHT."_
And finally… _"I'm fairly certain the outside light is on."_
😐
Yes, there was a time i thought all of that was common sense and when people didn't understand it, i thought they were some weirdo minority group, like extremely religious folks etc. I no longer believe that, it's just too much and it translates into (imo terrible) consequences. Only good thing is that i learned to be very picky about the people i surround myself with.
I love the rollercoaster of how you guys are switching from deep subjects to the problematics of tail usage :D
When Aaron gets excited he talks over dialogue.
Holy shit that red dragon mini.
Pierce had all the best lines
Blackface and black makeup are two different things
I might be overthinking this but Troy’s little “Ooh Neil” has so many layers to it.
My favorite episode
At last, my favourite episode. I wasn't disappointed.
Just to mention, I believe Advanced D&D is one of the older versions. Does anyone know if that's how it was played, where just the dm would roll for everyone's actions, or was that just the show?
AD&D was essentially 1.5 edition.
The magic of role games is... Every group can home brew their own rules.
I DM'd AD&D for almost a decade back in the day. Normally, each person has their own set of dice or share with other players. However, if there's only one set of dice it wouldn't be unheard of for a DM to handle the rolls. I think the show depicted it that way for simplicity's sake.
i just realized. in the River Song two parter, ala season 4, there was two Daves, and one was black. they called them Dave and Other Dave.
God, I died when Chang was in Dark Elf Face. He's even got elf ears.
YES! I’m so glad they’re watching this episode
