FYI: Dan Harmon has since said he regretted Pierce's last line "Maybe"
He says Pierce would indeed have played with Neal again and they develop a D&D bond,
playing together on a regular basis.
You have a source?
@@bramsteenhoek2674 The episode commentaries.
They are great for the first two seasons; always a packed room. Harmon & the Russo brothers are there for a lot of them.
@@JackDManheim thanks dude
Would’ve been interesting if they kept showing Pierce hanging out with Neil after this episode, like have a reference to him playing D&D every Thursday with Neil and Abed or have Pierce use the fact that he plays with Neil as a way to get information on getting back into Greendale in First Chang Dynasty
Maybe is a more realistic thing Pierce would say. He's not one to openly express his positivity.
The acting of Chevy Chase in this episode is really good.
too bad there was tension on the show, Chevy played a really great part as Pierce, would have been great to have him actually fit in with everyone for the series.
His acting is usually not so convincing
I've always been kinda torn on the whole Chevy and Harmon thing. I get that Chevy was notoriously a brat on set. But when he was given meaningful episodes he was great. This episode is an example and also the short pottery speech he gives Jeff are great examples. I wish he was less of a brat AND given more to do
@@_therealgabe_ For what it's worth, both Chevy and Harmon were notoriously difficult to work with.
Cameron Vincent I agree, I feel Chevy was portrayed as the ‘villain’ in that situation because he was an easy target due to the racist stuff. Not saying he wasn’t a dick but I’d imagine Harmon wasn’t much better, although he has admitted this himself.
This why I love Community. It did not mock D&D, or made fun of it, it embraced the game. Unlike other tv shows, they normally protrayed D&D and its players in negative way.
Big Bang Theory was one of them. That show just shits on nerds. The joke is never about the Science, or the comics/D&D/video games. The jokes always to ridicule the nerds cause they do these stuff. Lazy writing.
Can you tell me why that show is so popular?
@@lucaaz14 because most people, most of TBBT viewers, aren't nerds. They are amused by nerds as they are portrayed in the show ie. for being weird
Agreed, D&D actually has many positives; if you know where to look.
it helps develop team building, develops one's social skills, strengthens the imagination and helps give others creative ideas.
Some examples of media that shows D&D in a positive light (that I know of) include The Master (Amazing World of Gumball,) Dungeons & Discords (MLP) and a scene in the Star Vs. episode Britta's Tacos (where Marco discovers that some popular kids have joined Alphonso and Ferguson's D&D group)
And then stranger things brought it back
hector's'pretty well endowed we try not to sexualize him
I understood that reference
@@zackyboi2048 Congratulations?...
@@charl3z_the_bucket890 You did not understand that reference
@@ollyhodges Oof
My inner Pierce would correct you into do sexualize him if it was me hahaha
It's probably the most evil and dark we see Pierce. Chevy Chase was legit chilling. You never saw that side of him in his movies.
It would've been funny, if Neil wasn't suicidal
To be fair most people would describe Chevy Chase as unpleasant person...
@@Thunda1986 he never said he was they just assumed
@@Andrew-jh6nm it was obvious that's what Neil was intending to do
@@Thunda1986 I mean yeah from the main characters point of view in an over reacty kinda britta way but not all depressed ppl kill themselves lol
Britta's line "I have 3 armor's." is brilliant! In D&D, each character has an armor class. Her's was 3. She's Britta-ing D&D.

+Liel ben atar Patreon, man. They've uploaded like the next 5 episodes after this, but it won't be on public access for the next 1-5 weeks.
If you've seen Harmonquest, you'll find she was actually Gillianing D&D
"Baste your chubby cheeks in tears of gravy" is such a brutal but brilliant line
Just to clarify, Annie didn't rope Jeff into this situation, he was already trying to help Neil... Annie just included everyone else from the group, also he never meant for it to become a nickname since he only called him that once.
He also called him that in the conspiracy theory episode, although you could argue by that point the nickname had stuck and Jeff called him that because everybody else did
My favourite bit from this episode is the interaction between Jeff and Pierce " I don't like being excluded Jeff, do you?"
Jeff - " Yes!"
"I'm sick of you threatening me, talking to me like a kid and me giving that look that you give like I can't get erections"
Best part is that Chevy once shouted on set: "I can still get erections!"
Two interesting things about this episode!
1) This episode was almost never aired! Series creator Dan Harmon: _"So I always wanted to do a Dungeons & Dragons episode. I knew that we had predecessors there. I knew that The IT Crowd did one. I knew that Freaks And Geeks did one. [...] they [NBC and Sony] were so upset about the crime of this episode having been written. The note session as a whole was preceded by a 45-minute period of them walking around the lot whispering to each other. They told me they would come up to my office and meet me privately. When they came up, I had the director and all of the writers in the office with me, because I was terrified."_
2) In the original concept, Pierce turns out to be an expert D&D player due to hanging out with Gary Gygax, co-creator of D&D, in the 70s. The concept also had Pierce sealing the others in a cube instead of freezing time, thus causing everyone to start a new game of D&D within the cube (a game within a game) that Pierce could not join as he was outside of the cube.
May I add a 3)?
Dan Harmon has since said he regretted making Pierce's last line "Maybe"
.
He says Pierce would indeed have played with Neal again and they develop a D&D bond,
playing together on a regular basis. It's Harmon-canon.
But, about number 2... who would be the DM of the game inside the cube? I mean, it would be Hector, Bing Bong, Maaaaaar and all the others playing D&D, right? But Abed doesn't have a character, so he's not in the cube, so… can he still DM the game in the cube or not? Or I guess someone else has to DM and Abed has to roll to see if the DM succeeds at being a good DM? lol
@@JackDManheim That explain Neil's eulogy on his radio show when Pierce died
@@Nanaten , Yep. The show had great continuity and running gags.
You know its a good episode when the scrapped version of the episode is also amazing
Who’s watching this after it was removed from Netflix?
You got amazon prime? The d&d episode its still on prime. At least prime knows what’s right and wrong

Fa---bulous Neil has been in the background saying one line here and there since the beginning. The guy who brought the D&D books to Pierce is Garrett. You guys probably remember Leonard the most. From this point on, the background characters will have a chance to shine and I love them all. POP POP! Amrite, guys?
No. He was just Fat Neil.
My heart feels so full everytime I hear Neil say "I'll be around."
Fun fact: Allison Brie improvised the whole story of bedding the maiden and Yvette Brown's reaction is genuine.
do you know if the footage used was her initial reaction? there’s a lot of improv so they would rewrite and reshoot to incorporate their improvs
Her reaction couldn't be her original reaction because its a one camera sitcom. But she was shocked by what Alison improvised.
@@analcommando1124 One camera doesn't literally mean they only use one camera. They still could've used the original reaction shots.
@@roemip It does literally mean they use one camera. The lighting would have to be different if they used 2 cameras.
Yvette's "original reaction" wouldn't have been on camera because there was no camera on her when Brie gave the maiden sex speech.
Look at the season 1 cast evaluation video where Yvette is talking about Gillian in the scene in the season 1 Halloween episode where Yvette and Gillian are in Professor Slater's office. Yvette said "Gillian gives so much emotion even when she's not on camera" that it helps her be a better actor.
It is also why Chevy hated the long hours because every thing has to be filmed separately.
this episode's been removed from streaming services! Thank you guys for keeping it up
The best line is when Neil says “I’ll be around” 😭😭😭
Two...three....four fingers - Annie lol!

Whos here after they pulled it from Netflix:(
I’m pissed off. I’ve seen the episode a few times, but this is a principle now. PC and SJW are ruining everything! It’s like those idiots in Madison, Minnesota toppling that statue of a [UNION] general and abolitionist. Fucking why?!
I'm still watching it. Must be just in the US
I just started watching the series last week and I heard this was the best episode. This is the only way I have found to watch it.
I haven’t seen it 😔
Right here
To me what’s so brilliant about this show is that it always gives you that moment when you say “this is not what I was expecting at all!”
You guys should check out Harmonquest, where the show’s creator plays D&D with a bunch of comedians (including Community cast members) and they create animation to visualise the game - it’s really funny and creative.
best part of this episode is how pierce says "FAAAAAAAAT"
Lol you guys should definitely do a Normies-themed Dungeons and Dragons campaign! Maybe have some of the NPCs and enemies be based on members of the Normies community even... Rooster Teeth and Funhaus do video series like that called "Heroes and Halfwits" and "Twits and Crits" respectively that you guys could use as a reference for how to produce something like that!
Man, I was really hoping Navi would be back to watch this episode with you guys.

Okay, i started playing dnd years after i first saw this episode. Since then i've been running games for a long while now. This episode made my friends and me start playing DnD.
We always thought it was too nerdy, but about 5 years in, it created fucking amazing evenings and stories. Highly recommend it or any other pen and paper game like Pathfinder.
I watched this scene as a kid, I was completely innocent and unaware of what Annie was doing in that one scene and didn’t even know her character was a well endowed man
You guys you should check out 'Critical Role' on Geek and Sundry. They play D&D and Livestream it. The players and DM are all famous voice actors from video games. The DM is reeeeeally good.
Harmontown has its own D&D and it's pretty good mostly. They have a series that's animated too which is even better.
I cannot recommend Critical Role enough. I watch live every Thursday night. Their DM is the voice of McCree in Overwatch (among so much else), and two of the players voice Lust and Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist.
Critical Role Cast
Matthew Mercer: McCree from Overwatch
Travis Willingham: Roy Mustang from FMAB
Laura Bailey: Lust from FMAB
Ashley Johnson: Ellie from The Last of Us 1 and 2
Taliesin Jaffe: The Flash from Injustice 2
Sam Riegel: Phoenix Wright from Ace Attorney
Liam O'Brien: Illidan from World of Warcraft
Marisha Ray: A.J. Mason from Friday the 13th Game

One of the funniest episodes...too bad Netflix cut it due to a corporate empty token gesture
When I first binged this show on Netflix they kept referencing this D&D episode and I was like “Did I miss something?” It wasn’t until the next D&D episode that I finally googled it
@@swordsmanthegamernine7973 I also googled it because it was only 23 episodes
They brought it back. Noone was really offended, they were trying to be proactive. But Chang's legit insane, and he was a dark elf. 😂
@@georgewilliamsiii4677 I'm not sure where you're from, but here in Canada this episode isn't on Netflix.
@@georgewilliamsiii4677 Yeah I think that's what people miss, the blackface isn't making fun of actual POC in this context, it's making fun of how socially terrible Chang is as a character to put on Drow makeup without the rest of the ensemble to add D&D context to the makeup.
I was waiting for this episode. Now people are going to want a Normies d&d campaign.
One of the series best episodes. Iconic.
My favorite episode next to the documentary one. Season 2 has some of the best episodes of the series
my 2nd favorite, my 1st is the darkest timeline. D&D is a close 2nd.
britta's totally a hermione type of character
This is the episode that convinced me and my friends to play D&D and its been a part of my life since. The greatest game ever created.
Watching this again before RUclips pulls it. Can’t believe Netflix and Hulu took this down.
Do you know why, also yeah I noticed that because I do not remember this episode at all
Chang’s “black face” which is ridiculous. I’ve never heard of anyone offended by this. It’s a top five episode of the series so they need to add it back.
This is the only place I can watch this classic ep online now.
There are loads of websites online showing it you just have to find it
SoapBox X please tell me one of these websites I’ve been looking all over
It’s annoying how this episode was pulled from Netflix and Hulu. Did anybody find it offensive?
Dude most people dont find most things offensive at all, it just takes a small amount of people to complain and a company get terrified of "ur racist" backlash if they dont act on it. its all blackmail tbh the company doesnt actually care they are just saving themselves from losing money essentially. An asian dude in black face cosplaying a character in a board game, ofc it is not offensive. Neither is any non white actor voicing a white character. one white actor voices any other race character or any race dresses black (but blacks can dress white somehow thats fine?) and its the end of the world and ur a racist nazi lol. welcome to 2020 my friend. and we though the virus was gna be the worst thing this year.
I think there is a petition on change.org to bring the episode back
@@Auron710 literally no one was asking for it to be pulled. It was just corporations trying to appear 'progressive' by doing meaningless gestures instead of anything actually useful when no one left or right genuinely saw it as offensive or problematic
@@jonnym610 On top of all that, this is such a *touching* episode, because the stakes are so high, and the goal is to prevent Neil from committing suicide. It's got a very anti-bullying message and shows fantastic character development and heart. But who cares about that context when there's a painted-face joke?
GAH one of my favorites!

I love Community it's a great show. And actually when I started watching this series I was surprised to find that there are two people that I've worked with before who are characters on this show. I worked with Jim Rash (the actor playing Dean Pelton) briefly when I was stage manger on two shows at the Groundlings Improv theatre. (Before he was cast in this) And I also recognized a girl who was in several plays with me in college Theatre playing an extra on several episodes of Community. (Most notably "Pillows and Blankets" the Ken Burns documentary spoof episode.)
AubreySciFi
THANK YOU! Love this episode. My absolute fave though season3 episode 14 can't wait till we get there.
I'm rewatching the series along with the group and I just realised just how much they foreshadow so much story elements with simple throw away lines, like "fat Neil" was mentioned in passing a few episodes ago and in this episode there's a line about Jeff that ends up being a major story point for him. Falling in love with this show all over again
Personally I'd rather have the tail.
All Changs Are Born with Tails.
I think another reason Jeff really wanted to make Neil feel better is that Jeff sometimes wonders if he would still be liked if he were fat, like when he tells abed he pretends to be fat on phone sex lines in the dinner with abed episode. So when he makes fun of Neil’s weight, he think about himself in Neil’s shoes.
Clicked this so fast! One of the best Eps.
I so badly want to play this game, but I don't have any friends. I live in a city that has a ton of places to go, but because I'm really shy I don't feel comfortable just showing up to a place to play with a lot of people. I need a small group of people that I kind of already know. =/
KayfabeTactics I know how you feel, but if you can just pull the trigger and go, you'll meet plenty of people who want help you feel welcome and get involved. Maybe email the organizer and tell them about your situation. Even just knowing the name of one person who will be there can help you feel less adrift. D&D is worth it.
There's also ways to play online. Roll20 is a website to play over the internet and you can look for a group there. If you check out the critical role or dndnext reddits, you can search for groups looking for new players.

One of my favorite episodes. Too many great scenes and lines as usual haha.
I excited about you guys getting to episode 16
Should’ve been nominated for an emmy in season 2- Chevy
i agree this was his best episode ever, it's my 2nd favorite episode mostly because of Chevy.
I was literally organizing my new D&D character sheets in a folder when I opened RUclips and saw this video lol.. kismet.
I agree with Troy. A tail is more useful than giant ears.
I play twice a week, I DM for my group and play as a player in another for the last 3 years. I feel its one of the funnest things you can do with your friends, and if you have never tried it, to at least try it with your friends once or twice.
the bit that gets me everytime i watch it is when pierce says he wants to shapeshift Neil, Abed goes sure what do you want to make him... Pierce: Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat
They take out this episode from Netflix because Chang's “blackface” was offensive.
It isn't though
That is not a fucking black face, Chang is COSPLAYING a Dark Elf
FrankOz98 I know! They got this one wrong.
No, he had "darkface". I doubt Malekith and his people can be offended by it, because Drows doesn't exist!
If they can't tell the difference between A Dark elf and a Black man there racist
This is my only way to watch this episode in full since it has been removed from both Netflix and Hulu.
I love how Pierce inadvertently lets Neal be heroic in his own skin. You can tell that it flips a switch in his head where he realizes that not only does he have value, but he has the power to reach out to someone else who's hurting and offer him friendship. It shows the strength of Neal's character that he is willing to “let the wounded animal bite him” and still reach out, understanding that the attacks came from a place of deep pain and loneliness.
One of the best episodes hands down
Ironically, Pierce is the one who helps Neil have the best "Dungeons and Dragons"game ever. The other players patronize him and Jeff only does the game because he felt bad for starting the teasing. Neils character is an over the top muscular and powerful character. Pierce(though his reasons are morally bankrupt)makes Neil be himself(that is, fat)and Neil beats him, finding some comfort in who he is.
This episode is no longer on Netflix. Damn!
That comment is, well, exactly two years late; but my favourite part of these reaction videos is your genuine reaction to the episodes; especially the laughter part - I am still getting over the Lost reference reaction -.
First, I just ordered the shirt Marketa has, I adore Uncle Iroh and the first Avatar show.I have been binge watching these since July and I want to say I adore Mickey and Marketa in these. It is that feeling when you love something and someone else finds it new and the love it as well, there should be a word for that. But both of your reactions and how you love this show and characters is just a great feeling. BTW, I have Aspergers (Now high functioning autism) and Abed is the best representative of our condition, exaggeration and all, in the history of TV
One of my favorite episodes ever. But they took it out because white people got offended for some reason.
I just realized the "classroom" during the opening prologue is the back corner of the cafeteria set lol
"The cast plays Dungeons & Dragons" episodes are the new musical episodes. In the last couple of years it seems like it's becoming a thing. Voltron did one for crying out loud!

Markata is laughs the hardest while watching Community its hilarious, also I need hearing aids now.

When I started this episode I though they were going to bash DnD like most writers do but I was surprised by how good it was lol
Just now I suddenly think of the fact abed made hector for Troy. Hector and Troy? Hector was de prince of Troy in the Iliad hahaha, abed is not that bad with names
Oh yeah, you guys should totally play D&D! Or some game like that! And film it, kinda how they do it on Critical Role and places like that, for the audience! :D I'm sure many of us would love to watch that! I know I would! :)
I just realized that Pearce meta gamed so hard
It looks like this episode became a market substitute since this episode is no longer available "in-market."
A year later and most streaming services removed this episode for supposed ‘racism’.
woke after effects sucks
Hey, I thought the Modern Warfare one was edited fine! I would know, I saw that video in its RUclips edited entirety like eight times within three days.
I love D&D and I play it and DM all the time! I love this episode though it does have a few inaccuracies it is mostly a great representation of the game. So here's one of my favourite stories from one of my games:
I played a dragonborn paladin who got imprisoned for worshipping an outlawed deity. I didn't have any weapons on me but when time came to improvise one to escape I turned to the only portable thing in my cell: my piss bucket. One of my spells as a holy warrior makes my weapon temporarily aflame, and since my magic comes from a divine source it is technically holy. So I basically performed a jail break wielding a bucket of holy flaming shit
My favorite Community Episode!
You guys definitly need to play some d&d with an experienced dungeon master. Do some research get each other hyped, set up a game room for yourselves, and play some smaller games while you get you “sea legs”. Eventually building up to a long term game! Hell, you can play other games and style besides fantasy d&d. Like sci-fi, lord of the rings, board games, eldritch horror (lovecraftian), and all sorts of things! I think you guys would love it!
