The Two Cuts of the Community Pilot

  • Well, as of April 2024 this video will be sort of outdated as Community is leaving Netflix. Still, Community’s presence on Netflix has put many eyes on the show, including mine, and I think that’s pretty cool. While the syndicated cut is leaving the major streaming sphere, it’s memory will live on in this insignificant comparison I felt like making. Seriously though thanks for watching. I really didn’t expect this to blow up.
    Also the comments have said that this shorter cut seemed to only be in a select few countries including the US. And other countries had the standard longer cut. Idk why they showed different versions in different countries, but that seems to be the case.

    Hey just thought I'd clear this up for you as someone who worked on the show. The Netflix version is the cut made for syndication packages. The version on other platforms and the DVD are in fact the broadcast version of the pilot as it aired on NBC in 2009.
    It's common practice to trim longer episodes to a syndication safe 22 minute runtime so that purchasers can maximize their ad time. This is the same reason many basic cable networks do things like turbocharged credits or, in the case of NickatNite, straight up cutting out entire scenes arbitrarily.
    I brought this issue to Netflix's attention when Community launched on the platform and they just replied with a shrug. More accurately they said that they just put on what the distributor gave them, in this instance it seems Sony gave them the syndication cut and Netflix is content with that.

      I think this usually this happens when a movie/show is provided to a streaming service with a version/master meant for multiple territories. Having the subtitles be generated and displayed by the video player or whatever else is preferable in these cases, so that other language translations don't have to place their subtitles in front of or above/beneath any 'burned in' english subtitles. The issue is that sometimes they forget to send over the subtitle track for translating the non-english bits when sending it over for a streaming service. So it's likely not Netflix deliberately removing them, so much as they weren't provided the proper subtitles and didn't think to check if anything was missing / ask for them to be provided. Streaming can be weiiiird like that.

    TV shows in a 30 minute time slot on broadcast television are 22 minutes long. Networks will sometimes allow slightly longer run times for a pilot episode (as was the case when Community originally aired in September of 2009), but the rest of the episodes kept to the 22 minute runtime. However, when Community became a syndicated TV show, they had to cut the pilot down to 22 minutes to be consistent with the standard runtime for broadcast television episodes. Netflix has chosen to stream the syndicated version of the episode (the same version of the episode you would see if you were watching Community on Comedy Central) and Hulu has chosen to stream the unedited version of the episode (the same version you would have seen if you were watching it live back in September of 2009).

    • @enigma00
      @enigma00 Год назад +62

      This is the answer. It's obvious to me having grown up watching TV pre-streaming, but I guess now younger people just don't know that that's how broadcast TV was. Special pilots would get to be slightly longer, but then would get cut down to the usual length for reruns and then syndication.
      Indeed, it goes beyond that; in syndication, shows were cut down even further, so the syndication version is different from the originally aired version, and also from any VHS/DVD releases. Some streaming services even have syndication versions of shows, not the originals, and that is always super annoying to see, especially when you know what bits have been cut out. From other comments here I can see that this is still the case for many shows.

      This actually happens a lot to me when watching the Simpsons on streaming. I’ve seen the same episodes in syndication so many times that I’m so used to the “cut” version and now that I’ll watch them on streaming, their are little bits and extended scenes that I forgot about because I haven’t watched the “broadcast” version in so long.

      @calmbbaer Год назад +1

      @@rdoino2210 - except your experience shows the flaw in this logic. Syndication cuts happen with EVERY episode, not just the longer ones. That allows the broadcasters to show more ads than they were able to during first broadcast. So do ALL episodes of Community have missing scenes (like The Simpsons)? If not, then this may be another phenomenon. Either way, shame on Netflix for doing Community so dirty. It's a testament to the show quality that it was able to enter the mainstream via Netflix through episodes that were so mercilessly cut (one in its entirety).

    One of the major aspects of the show is how meta it is, how aware the show is that it is a show, as emphasised by Abed, having substantial differences between cuts of episodes, and therefore a changing reality depending on which version you're watching, really drives this home. Heck, you could write an episode of Community surrounding this exact premise, different characters remembering events differently, add in a red-herring conspiracy plot, maybe someone - probably Britta - hallucinating an encounter between different versions of themself, and you've got yourself a plot for the movie.

One (potentially unintended) effect of this is that the Hulu side is brighter. That pairs well with Britta's accusatory face and the core argument (I'm correct, I get all the attention). Finally, you aligned the faces and also the chalkboard + seat for that "split" effect. I haven't even seen "Community" and your thumbnail got me to click.

    I’m pretty sure this is because Netflix seems to set up its contracts in a way that gets them the syndication versions of shows. The syndication version of the episode would be roughly 22 minutes long. A similar thing happened with the LOST finale, which (if I’m remembering correctly), was originally one episode that was longer than two normal episodes, but in syndication and on Netflix was cut down into two normal-length episodes.

Season 4 was was the first season broadcast straight to Netflix, but audiences found the initial version to be too confusing. The Netflix version is the actual "aired" episode whereas the longer version of the pilot is what was used to sell the show in the first place. It's obvious because the running time of the shorter version is the standard length for a commercial television network at that time. The longer version is the "director's cut" equivalent.

    Then there’s the season 2, premiere episode - in the end credits - with Professor Bower (R.I.P. Betty White) of them singing Toto’s “Africa” with what looked like the old iTunes song information appearing on screen as they were singing it.
    Netflix also removed the D&D episode with Fat Neil (I’m not sure if it was because it was implied that Neil was going to “unalive” himself, or if it was because of Chang going full face painted Dark Elf, and as Shirley put it, “So we’re just going to ignore this hate crime?”

    The wild thing is all these cut scene, I swear they were in the actual episode that aired initially on NBC. The Seinfeld line definitely was, as was Britta's introducing her activism, Annie and Troy attending the same class in high school...but then I also remember the first episode on air playing the shortened fortune teller opening.
    I see someone else in the comments confirmed that NBC lengthened the timeslot for first episode of Community that aired, but it baffles me why Netflix would run the syndication version, which is objectively inferior. It's pretty fascinating, and I wonder if it relates to purchasing the streaming rights (since NBC is a partial owner of Hulu, they are likely more free to put whichever version they want online).

    The shorter versions are the syndication cuts. Shows are often cut down for reruns in afternoon time slots on cable channels for more commercials and usually happen once a show hits 3 seasons. Netflix picked up the syndication cuts while Amazon Prime and Hulu have the DVD cuts. There might also be music licensing cuts and swaps.

      To me the weakest episode of S1 was the Jack Black one, because his character feels so out of place and hard to watch. Plus his supposed unseen presence beforehand was a pretty egregious retcon.
      (Edit: and it's not like I dislike Jack Black as a performer, I think he's great when he's in his element. Community doesn't feel right for his style somehow or else that character just really annoys me as he's written.)
      I also think the season finale is incredibly awkward and hasn't aged well. It's weird seeing two women fall publicly head over heels for Jeff (of all people!). They have to pull some serious shenanigans at the beginning of S2 just to course correct Britta and Jeff's dynamic a little. Plus the T-slur is a running joke in that episode. 😓
      So those two are my least favourite S1 episodes.

      For me, the Netflix version of season 1 episode 1 of Luther cuts some significant chunks of the story and important elements of some scenes, if any RUclipsrs want to look into it. I always figured it got edited for "broadcast" in the US and that's the version Netflix shows US customers, so UK Netflix customers might see the original unaltered one, I dunno.
      The two bits that I noticed off the top of my head were different: my Netflix version omits Luther being visited by his partner in the mental hospital (?) at the beginning. Then in his interview with Alice, a conversation about dark matter is missing, so in the original he calls back to it later, whereas in the Netflix version he just kinda says it out of nowhere. I assume there's more differences, but I didn't investigate further.
