One thing I really like about this movie that few people seem to pick up on during their first watch. Every time the situation is escalated, the person in charge is less competent. Alan couldn't do much to directly help, but he trusted John and wanted to save the hostages. Dwayne didn't trust John, but did care about saving the hostages. The agents didn't care about John at all, and were willing to kill the hostages themselves for the sake of the glory.
Not just my favorite Christmas movie, but one of my favorite movies period. Alan Rickman is so phenomenal in it, it’s no surprise Hans Gruber is considered by many to be the best movie villain of all time. 🙌🏼
The director is John Mctiernan, a very good Action director, aside from Die Hard, he also directed both The Predator and The 13th Warrior, both are highly recommended. Bruce Willis was never seen as an action hero before this film, before this film action heroes were the types like Schwarzenegger or Stallone. Also Takagi the president was James Shigeta, a famous Japanese American actor Hollywood tried to sell in the 50s and 60s as a heartthrob to the american public. He was very handsome and charismatic, he did Bridge to the Sun based on the biography of an american girl who marries a japanese diplomat and ww2 hits. A very very good film
Fun fact is that Alan Rickman is so stunned in the death scene because the director lied about the drop. He told Alan he would drop on the count of three. The drop was at 1 or 2. His shock is genuine.
I've watched this movie every Christmas since it came out. About 4 years ago I watched it with my great nephew, who was 15 or 16 at the time. Like me, he was, and still is a big Potterhead. I asked him a question to distract him when Alan Rickman’s name appeared so he wouldn’t know to look for him. As the movie progressed, I was watching him out of the corner of my eye, and I knew the second he recognized Alan Rickman. His eyes got real big, and he said, “No way!” I laughed and he said, “Is that Snape?” I laughed again and said, “Yep.” He couldn’t believe ‘Snape’ was on Die Hard.

You probably already know the major fun facts, but here are a few more from the director's commentary. He was very worried about the rooftop sequence, particularly about having that many people standing underneath a real hovering helicopter. He knew that one mistake could kill a lot of people, so he called it off after only two fly-bys. Hence why you don't get a good look at the roof from the helicopter until after it's evacuated. Also, the roof explosion wasn't done with a miniature; to get the scale, they set up a camera 5 miles across the city. The director's favorite moment is the elevator "ding" right before it explodes. Bruce Willis suffered permanent 2/3rds hearing loss in his left ear after shooting that one terrorist through the table. Also, Alan Rickman's "Alas, your Mr Takagi did not see it that way, so he won't be joining us for the rest of his life" and chowing down at the buffet table was ad-libbed. Same goes with that one guy who munched on a candy bar while waiting for the police infiltration.

I was fan of Bruce Willis since childhood. He was a double threat with acting and music. Had a TV series (Moonlighting) that was cancelled after 5 seasons. Because both he and the female lead had chose not to come back. Die Hard was his 3rd film, he got $5 mil for it (highest salary of the time) and became a overnight globally-known star. Based on a best-selling novel and directed by John McTiernan (Predator), it's considered to be the best action movie of it's era. The sequels, 2-4 are good while part 5 is debatable.
Great movie, proper classic. Fun fact: Bruce Willis was actually born in Germany, unlike any of the actors playing the villains who were not German at all, obviously Alan Rickman included 😛
Bro the fact that this is a CHRISTMAS movie lolllll like what, I had no clue what was about to go down in this movie when I randomly clicked to watch it but wow definitely gonna check out the sequels, it was fun. Luv you guys' reaction channel!
Fun fact (apologies if someone already said this): when filming the end of the movie… They told Rickman they would drop him on 3 and dropped him on 1 so his shocked face is real.
It’s so nice to see people genuinely enjoying a movie. I like the interaction and discussion between you guys, part of the reason why I’m loving your channel so much 😊 It’s funny that at the time Bruce Willis was more of a comedic actor, and people didn’t believe he could pull of this role. Which of course he did! Sad to see his career having taken such a tumble now and him starring in only very low budget films. But yes, best Christmas movie ever. Great reaction, and of course: Merry Christmas to you guys in advance! 😄
That fall at 15:10, where the stunt man catches the second slot on the way down rather than one he was aiming for - That was an accident, but the director thought it added so much great tension to the moment, he kept it. Plus, Alan Rickman's face when he falls ... they were going to count to three, then drop him on the air bag below, but only counted to two before doing it. X-) So his fear there is totally real.
I could never quite get pass the dead elevator guy closing his eyes as Han's touched his head. I guess they missed that in post. Masterpiece of a film though. The story of Alan not being told about the start of the drop to get an honest reaction out of him reminds me of a similiar story in the first Alien movie. The dinner scene. The cast was not told about the alien popping out and spraying blood on them.
The director, John McTiernan, gave us not just Die Hard (and he also directed the third film in the series as well, Die Hard With a Vengeance). He gave us Predator, The Hunt for the Red October, Medicine Man, Last Action Hero and The Thomas Crown Affair. They're pretty good and I recommend them. :)
The blond guy who played Karl, was the well respected Russian Ballet dancer- Alexander Godunov. He defected to the US and from what I remember danced here for some years before trying a bit of acting at times. He was not only in this but one of Harrison Ford's best films-- Witness. Was fun watching y'all enjoy this, even if I do agree w/ BW. 😛 Whatever floats ya boat lol.
He actually started acting in the USSR before defecting. He was a fantastic ballet dancer, and someone whose alcoholism ended up killing him way too early.
Netflix has a series called The Movies that Made Us, and Die Hard is one of the episodes. It gives a lot of behind the scenes and how the movie was made. This movie changed the action movie genre forever, and it's so great.
Its great to see the younger generation see the types of classics us older generations were not just able to see but see it in a theatre when I was in my early 20s now all my children have seen it and I can show it to my grandchildren!! This movie will still stand in 100 years and I hope your grandchildren will love it like mine will!! Merry Christmas gentlemen!!
This movie is supposed to be Rambo in a skyscraper. Speaking of, before Bruce Willis was cast as John McClane, Don Johnson, Sylvester Stallone, Richard Gere, Patrick Swayze, Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, Nick Nolte, Jeff Bridges, Al Pacino, James Caan, and Richard Dean Anderson were considered for the role.
Even though I love Stallone and Arnold, I'm glad they didn't end up doing this movie cause it would be just another 80s action movie. The casting of Bruce Willis was amazing because he's built normally and isn't the stereotypical stoic macho tough guy. He panics, makes mistakes, and gets beat up really bad which adds to the realism of the movie.
Got love for all of them, specially nolte, bridges, johnson and ma boy patrick swayze. But I think the only guy that could do the amazing job that bruce willis pulled of, is mel gibson
@@pranavnnair5 Agreed, Bruce was definitely the best choice for that role. He made it very realistic. Not to mention, I couldn't see either Arnold or Sylvester fitting into that vent. :)
@@chermebrownsauce Lol, Mel Gibson in that role? Not sure about that. He had already established himself as an unhinged antihero who is always driven by the death of his wife. Needed someone relatively level headed and a bit less impulsive. Besides, I'm not sure how well he would have nailed down a New York accent. ;)
@@DocMicrowave The original character in the book is a WWII vet fighter pilot who is estranged from his daughter and visiting her in LA. His wife had kicked him out years before because the war changed him so much. I can see how Mel Gibson would have been considered for a character more like that.
Some people think there is a debate as to whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie... But you can't debate facts. And Die Hard, is of course, not only a Christmas movie -- but the greatest Christmas movie ever made
I saw this as a sneak peek double feature with "Big"- Tom Hanks as the first feature. I was 18, just getting ready to graduate high school. Bruce had been a rom/com tv person until this. Awesome Xmas movie!
I love that the terrorists are the bad guys (and maybe the FBI guys), but Hans is Alan Rickman so he's automatically amazing, and the rest are pretty interesting. However, the characters we truly hate are Dwayne, the smug SWAT leader, the dumb police call center lady, and of course, Richard Thornburg.
The 3rd film, Die Hard with a Vengeance is the best in the series. That said, the first movie is based on a book, Nothing Lasts Forever. My dad gave me a copy of the book for Christmas and it is weird how many things are similar and how many are different in the stories. The book is a sequel to a book called The Detective, which was made into a movie with Frank Sinatra as the main character.
Trivia: Bonnie Bedelia (Holly) is Macauley Culkin's aunt. Both of them have starred in arguably the two greatest Christmas movies of all time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonnie_Bedelia
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is one of the top action films of my generation. This year (christmas) I will watch it 32 times. John McClane for ever! 😄 And definitely watch the third part 'Die Hard with a Vengeance' !!! If you are swimming on the wave of 80/90 action films, you should definitely watch 'Lethal Weapon' . Nobody runs as cool as Sgt. Martin Riggs ❤ (Mel Gibson). Also a christmas movie. Was fun to watch you guys - merry christmas!
Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Aliens, Terminator, Back to the Future, Rambo, (almost any thing Schwarzenegger did).... The 80s were amazing for extremely entertaining and memorable action/adventure flicks. Unlike today's fair.
@@seebee925 Never said he was. Just entertaining to watch. Those movies were meant as an escape from reality. You had to put your brain on pause at times to enjoy them.
What makes this movie so great and stand out among the action genre: 1. Everyone already pointed this out: John McClane’s a realistic action hero. He’s not an invincible killing machine, he’s a regular guy who’s scared, gets tired and gets hurt. 2. The whole situation is intense from start to finish. 3. I love it when both the protagonist and the antagonist show a level of intelligence and resourcefulness. 4. The entire fight that happened inside is just straight up dirty, violent, without rules. Snapping necks, blowing up an entire floor, exploding knees, broken glass on bare feet, hanging from a chain, etc... I miss when action movies were this violent. 5. Hans’ plan is kinda perfect. If it wasn’t for John, he would’ve gotten away with it. 6. The people dealing it on the outside become more and more incompetent, making the situation rely more on John. 7. Smart directing. Everything that happened before the hostage situation comes back around to play a part in it: -John admits he doesn’t like traveling in planes and he finds himself trapped in a 40-stories building lol -We see Ellis sniff coke and when negotiating with Hans, he’s literally served Coke. -The guy at the plane sitting next to John advises him to take off his shoes and make fists with his toes is what results in him getting injured by the glass.
Tony (Andreas Wisniewski) was in the previous year's Bond film, The Living Daylights, as the assassin, Necros. Both Agent Johnsons were in the next year's Bond film, Licence To Kill. One as an enemy, one as an ally.
A fun detail to notice, I have no idea why, but Americans and Europeans hold their cigarettes differently. Americans hold it between their index and middle finger. Europeans usually hold their cigarettes with their thumb and index finger, just like Hans does the first time he and John McClane meet
Love the whole Die Hard series. Bruce Willis at his finest. I make a point to watch the first one every Christmas though. Anyone that says it’s not a Christmas movie is WRONG!
"Nine million terrorists in the world and I gotta kill one with feet smaller than my sister..." It's crazy this is based off a book. In the novel, the phrase is "Now, WE have a machine gun." It was a way to play guerilla warfare and confuse the terrorists. The cop was also supposedly in his 50s, the writer of the book wanted Frank Sinatra of all people to play McClain; since Sinatra played the character in the book's first film adaptation in the 60s.
@@Deadpool-px2nm it was called The Detective, same name as the book that was written in '66. The novel version of Die Hard was called Nothing Lasts Forever, that was written in '79. Again, loosely adapted, but does follow some major parts of the movie.
Ninetailbrush: I would have probably stayed...... Me: ...and died 🤪 For me it is not really Christmas before Hans has fallen off the Nakatomi Plaza and a certain someone "dresses like a chicken" (if you know you know) Merry Christmas everyone! 😘
The thing that no one ever comments on is John McClane's great "MacGyver" moment when he sets off the explosive. To explode C4 you need a blasting cap stuck inside the C4. To set off the blasting cap, need electricity. Old style monitors and TV picture tubes carried an electric charge inside. If you stuck your foot through a old style TV, you would still get an electric shock even if the TV wasn't plugged in. McClane uses the computer monitor to detonate the blasting caps. When the monitor hits the top of the elevator, it gets smashed and releases it's electric charge to set off the blasting caps. In theory, this should work perfectly, I really wish Mythbusters had done an episode on this to see if it would actually work.
20th Century Fox had just bought the building whose exterior served as Nakatomi Plaza. As to the debate whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie, I only know this: it's my Christmas movie. Keep up the good work, gents.
Fun fact , believe it or not , making "fists with your toes" is actually a great way to subtly relieve stress . I am Autistic and a few of my stims are slightly more obvious (both happy ones and the more stressed ones) but if I am stressed or angry this is a great stim that I do and I believe everyone , when they feel stress or anger but don't want to show it or do something stupid because of said anger or stress , should do because it is such an effective method.
Keep the Die Hard’s coming, not really a classic Christmas movie fan but Die Hard is amazing. Having these being reacted too in between the Christmas movies would be great! 👍

Definitely react to Die Hard 2, and Die Hard With A Vengeance. They go perfectly with this movie!
I love Alan Rickman as the villain in this movie. The actor that plays Powell plays a cop and the lead character in the sitcom Family Matters.
Great cast. Alexander Gudanov and Alan Rickman are great bad guys.
I love this movie. ....and YES it is a Christmas movie 😊❤
Fun fact: The actor who played Karl was a ballet dancer by profession.
Alexander Godunov was with Bolshoi Ballet USSR until he defected to the US.
and had a long time romance with actress Jacqueline Bisset.
Die Hard was a real roller coaster ride! Alan Rickman’s voice as Hanz ooooo was menacing.
As a die hard Die Hard fan (hehe) I say the first 3 are DEFINITELY worth watching. Especially the third its one of my favorites (after the first one)
Some people think there is a debate as to whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie...
But you can't debate facts.
And Die Hard, is of course, not only a Christmas movie -- but the greatest Christmas movie ever made
So wrong.
This was Alan Rickmans first movie.
Hans is Iconic! We had some really cool movies back then.
I really like the third movie die hard with a vengeance it’s definitely the best out of the sequels
You forgot about Office Douche
The 3rd film, Die Hard with a Vengeance is the best in the series. That said, the first movie is based on a book, Nothing Lasts Forever. My dad gave me a copy of the book for Christmas and it is weird how many things are similar and how many are different in the stories. The book is a sequel to a book called The Detective, which was made into a movie with Frank Sinatra as the main character.
Die Hard 2 takes place at Christmas also. The other three take place during summer.
Trivia: Bonnie Bedelia (Holly) is Macauley Culkin's aunt. Both of them have starred in arguably the two greatest Christmas movies of all time.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is one of the top action films of my generation. This year (christmas) I will watch it 32 times. John McClane for ever! 😄
And definitely watch the third part 'Die Hard with a Vengeance' !!!
@@DocMicrowave only if you insist that Schwarzenegger is an actor 😄
@@seebee925 Never said he was. Just entertaining to watch.
Those movies were meant as an escape from reality. You had to put your brain on pause at times to enjoy them.
I saw this in the theater opening night back in 88. The audience erupted in some of the loudest cheers I've heard when Al Powell shot Karl.
What makes this movie so great and stand out among the action genre:
Everything that happened before the hostage situation comes back around to play a part in it:
-John admits he doesn’t like traveling in planes and he finds himself trapped in a 40-stories building lol
-We see Ellis sniff coke and when negotiating with Hans, he’s literally served Coke.
You see why we 90s babies loved this movie. One of the best.
Best
Christmas
Movie of all time
It's tradition in our family to watch it every Christmas Eve or Day. It's not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls off the Nakatomi Plaza. 🎄🎅
18:44 yippee 🥳 ki yay, 🤬! 35:19-35:21 happy 😆 trails, Hans. 35:39-35:41 😆
They didn't tell Alan Rickman when they dropped him at that last scene. That look of fear was real.
Didn't grow up with it but Love it definitely a classic.
"Nine million terrorists in the world and I gotta kill one with feet smaller than my sister..."
It's crazy this is based off a book.
There was a film adaptation before Die Hard? 😮
Whats it called
@@Deadpool-px2nm it was called The Detective, same name as the book that was written in '66. The novel version of Die Hard was called Nothing Lasts Forever, that was written in '79.
Again, loosely adapted, but does follow some major parts of the movie.
I love the pic when Powell is looking at the roof and it shows the gas price was $0.74/gallon when this was made. 13:51 mark.
Ninetailbrush: I would have probably stayed......
Me: ...and died 🤪
For me it is not really Christmas before Hans has fallen off the Nakatomi Plaza and a certain someone "dresses like a chicken" (if you know you know)
Merry Christmas everyone!
I had never even thought about that, cool.
I still can’t get over how much the fake security guard resembles Huey Lewis.
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe and Merry Christmas ⛄🎄
Die Hard 2 is also a Christmas film so you're good to go. Great video, guys!
The 80s-90s were the best-ever era for kickass action movies.
20th Century Fox had just bought the building whose exterior served as Nakatomi Plaza. As to the debate whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie, I only know this: it's my Christmas movie. Keep up the good work, gents.
fun fact... Holly Mclaine is played by Bonnie Bedelia, paternal aunt to Macaulay Culkin
Stir of Echoes with Kevin Bacon was like the movie the Sixth Sense. White noise was another interesting movie.
my own favorite xmas movie is "the Ref"
armed gunman invades a dysfunctional family dinner that's more hostile than the criminal
Yes, this. You guys would totally love this movie.
Widely considered the greatest action movie of all time.
That movie was first for Alan Rickman (Hans Gruber)
If this is considered an xmas movie, which I agree it is, couldn't the same be said about Lethal Weapon?
And Die Hard 2.
Yes to both imo
Wild. I just finished watching Die Hard. Opened RUclips and this was the first video.
Oh that’s super cool!!!
Great reaction, guys!
Keep the Die Hard’s coming, not really a classic Christmas movie fan but Die Hard is amazing. Having these being reacted too in between the Christmas movies would be great! 👍
One of the best action films of all time.
Next December (at this point in time, that would be next month) you guys should react to Violent Night. It's like Die Hard, but switch a cop for Santa Claus.
Good christmas movie! For this year's season, christmas 2023, please do Violent Night.
The second one is good but I personally think the 3rd is up to par with the first. Besides, has Samuel L Jackson!!!
