Thank you for the video! I just replaced both turbos on my e70 x5 35d, and this really helped me prep for the job. I wish I replaced the turbos when I had the engine out a year ago, would have been much easier lol. Thank you again for taking the time to film and upload the video to help your fellow enthusiasts! Much appreciated 👏
Awesome video! I'm looking at buying a 2010 that supposedly has a bad small turbo. No details yet on how it was diagnosed waiting for an update from the seller. If it really is just the small, how easy would you say it is to just remove the small and either rebuild/replace?
Great video! Among the best on the RUclips! Do you by any chance know why proturbo does not list the turbo rebuilt for BMW X5 E70 35d or did you get them rebuilt someplace else? I do have a same issue with my 2012 X5 where my assumption points out the turbo being out (small one on the top). I could see an oil soot by the crush gasket below the small turbo and a few drops of soot by the engine mount. What codes did your ECL throw? I got the code P2064 Reductant Supply Circuit High, P2297 O2 sensor out of range during deceleration bank1 sensor1 and P244B Diesel particulate filter (DPF) - differential pressure too high. It all happened when I had an episode of the cloud of white smoke during driving. I pulled over immediately and towed the car. I did realize that I lost some oil from normal to minimum on the dipstick but coolant remained full. Recently I pulled out Reductant Supply Injector next to the O2 sensor and I was hoping to find a bunch crystallized urea on the inlet but sadly that was not the case. I cleaned it anyway and tested it with 9V battery and it was clicking (opening) fine. The cause of white smoke episode possibly could be that urea was injected during this soot burn off to compensate for the emissions and that threw the P0264 and O2 was drenched at the same time causing P2297. I started the car again after it cooled down with Reductant Supply Injector out of the housing and it idled fine until the exhaust got hot and stared burning off the soot inside the exhaust. It did not change the idle but it started smoking grayish smoke and when i pressed aceleration pedal once to about 3000 rpm it did spit some of this black soot out of the tailpipe. That is as far as I went. I tried to seek some articles on the Bimmerfest site but not much was there to point me in the right direction. Any input from you would be greatly appreciated! I apologize but just realized that I wrote the book here :) I can wrench on the cars but this is my 1st diesel and I am really not familiar with it. I'm sure I will learn in a hurry. Thanks again for the great video!
These turbos are from TuneMyEuro.com. the soot that you are seeing is normal, it comes from the change over valve. To me it sounds like you have a clogged DPF. With those various codes. To properly diagnose it, it's best to have the scanner called Protool, you can purchase it on an android device and get the cable from bimmergeeks website. Other than having your vehicle in person, I can't really do much of anything.
Did you remove the gearbox during this process? My gaskets from Turbocharger to the Manifold are fried and need to replace them. On the same m57 engine
Great video..Love the details and not just showing the results. Thanks. Can you tell me the best way to replace the oil line from the oil distribution block that goes down to bottom of engine. It's the one that has an attachment on the large turbocharger. Any ideas would help. Thanks in advance! Keep up the great videos.
Are you taking about the line that goes to the large turbo? That one is fairly simple. However the long one that goes to the block, the turbos need to be removed for that one.
Hi Brad.. You alright... I've just watched your video.. It was nice to see how you assembled it.. Do u have a video of how you took the turbo out... I'm thinking of replacing my turbos but I don't know how to take it out... Look forward to hearing from you...
Hi Brad, thank for your video, I changed both turbos (LP turbo has a broken rotor) and after installing repaired turbos there is a whistle sound when I accelerate about 2000-2500RPM, I really don't know whats wrong with it, sound like this is completely new, I have never hearded it before... Of course, sealing I putted new, Is it necessary to set up waste gate on LP turbo? (in video 29min. you only installing it without setting up. Thanks,
Hey Brad, great work for sure! If you are able to let me know the part numbers for the smaller and bigger one that will be great. My 2008 3.0SD (twin-turbo) works nice, and in my opinion, have a good boost but in the last few months start having a bluish-white smoke after idling when the engine is under working temperature. Then after some time, the smoke will stop and the car will not smoke.... this issue is on and off but it can be a small smoke or it can be huge... I am eager to find out if that is turbo failure or something else. Should I delete EGR complete out of the engine? Thanks a lot!
Hey bud, did you ever fix this issue? I am having the exact same problem. I have a 11' X5 35d but same issue, smoke after idling a bit and smoke under load, then smoke goes away. Lots of power and boost, other than that the engine runs fine. Thanks.
@@mr.ogotit9737 Hello mate, at the end with replacing some of the bad injectors (x3) car was OK. I have sold the car and was very disappointed. The biggest issue I had and the main reason I made a decision to sell it is (before I have replaced the injectors), the car would stall (switch off) in the middle of the highway on a speed like 100-120km and then I had to stop (on stoping lane) take out the key and reinsert it -start the engine-drive it for some time and than stop again (stoping the traffic behind) for a few times until I have replaced the bloody injectors. Hope this can help. Cheers.
How bad was it smoking? Mine is gone on start up but gets progressively worse as it warms up. I just did VCG on mine and it’s still consuming and smoking like my ex wife haha. Think it’s the seals but trying to be sure. I wiggled the bottom turbo shaft when I had the car apart and it felt solid couldn’t feel any play
Oil came shooting out through my exhaust and one of the turbo feed lines is leaking oil. The turbo seals are probably the issue on my 335d. How much do you recon something like this should cost.
Hello, I have a BMW X5 E70 2007 with engine M57d30 306D3 can I install a better turbo than I have now I have a single turbo 235hp I thought use a slightly bigger turbo it works or not? if so does it need an exhaust manifold or not?
You'll need different turbos, exhaust manifold, and possibly DDE. Please do some research as I do not know the exact answer to your question. I'd assume you can.
For those 2 aluminum pipes that come off the small turbo did you get new o rings? Or just re seal them? Mine are leaking and I’m wondering where to get them or what size they are, thanks!
@@bradtourt well outside, it might be the oil pipe that people are changing and maybe some seals on it. I can't check see it inside...also some oil seeping trough intercooler pipe connecting to the intake manifold. moreover, changed the valve cover gasket used cheap torque wrench and it's now leaking more than before on the left side next to the turbo. and if that's not enough, found out I was driving long without EGR opening properly due to pressure converter not opening it properly and now something below EGR cooler leaking too coolant but can't find the source and don't want to take out thermostat for nothing. lastly. car still doesnt feel strong enough either...

@elisklapsky3687 your 2010 x5 35d is a twin turbo, assuming it is in North America and stock
Just bought an 2011 X5 35d 89k miles. Subscribed!!
Do you know of a video that shows how to take these out?
Thank you so much! I will be doing this in a few weeks with my 2012 x5 diesel.
Nice video Brad..thanks could you tell me where you to sent your turbo to get rebuilt& how much for the completed kit?..I will greatly appreciated 🙏
Hi Brad thanks for the video, where did you send the turbos for rebuild and the coat to rebuild?
Using your video to do my turbos on the 335d. It seems like it's a little tighter on my 335d than the x5.

The two 12 point bolts that hold the low pressure turbo. What size are they or does it require a special socket from bmw?
They are 12mm bolts. You'll need a 12 point socket for them
